  • It is summer and the shade garden is absolutely glorious! So much growth has happened since the Spring garden tour, and I can't wait to show you the difference. This shade garden runs the length of our house and our driveway, and we can see it from our two kitchen windows. And what a beautiful sight it is! Come walk with me in the garden.

The fungus problem is an indication of too much water. Treat it with the fungicide, but also pull your mulch back at least 12 inches in diameter around the root crown. Ferns need to breath. Also check to make sure that the crown is level with the soil.

As others have commented, this is a lovely side yard, thank you for sharing! Japanese beetles: I'm in Iowa, and yes, we certainly have them here, its a big problem. Here's what I use, when they start appearing: finely ground black pepper! Yes, this works to repel the beetles, and actually any other pest, including deer and rabbits (there's a huge problem with both of those here too). The way I apply the pepper is to first spritz the plant with water -- can use a spray bottle or a hose set on fine spray), and then sprinkle the pepper on the leaves. The water works as an adhesive, to hold the pepper in place. The pepper will stay there even after the water dries unless washed off by rain (a light rain doesn't wash off the pepper). You don't need to apply the pepper every day, but every few days is good. Put it on any new growth, where you don't see the pepper, or after a rain. Nothing touches my plants when I use the pepper. I have a completely unfenced yard, and I grow lots of vegetables, not just decorative plants and flowers. Nothing gets eaten by bugs or animals, and all I use is the pepper. I just make sure to not put the pepper on flowers, since my garden is visited by pollinators from spring until fall. And I've never had the flowers eaten by anything (except maybe the occasional nibble). The only exception to the 'not putting pepper on flowers' is that I DO put it on my tulips in spring, because deer LOVE tulip flowers (and leaves). With this method, I even get to enjoy tulips! I usually plant at least 100 bulbs because I adore tulips. One note about the pepper: yes, you can see it if you're standing right next to the plant, but not really from a distance. And I'm willing to put up with this slight downside, because no way will I ever use any poison of any kind. I'm organic all the way. Hope this helps anyone out there wanting an easy and cheap natural way of dealing with pests.

The garden has really filled out beautifully! For the Japanese beetles, if you go out early in the morning they don't fly away, so you can just hold a container of soapy water under the leaves their on and tap the limb and they will just drop off into the container. That's the best way I've found to really cut down on the population in my garden.

      1 tsp Neem Oil
      1/2 tsp liquid dish soap
      1 quart of water
Mix them up good and spray all over plant they’re attracted to, either early morning or evening. I drench the foliage and if any left over pour onto soil around base of plant. Believe it’s weekly and after heavy rains. I got the most lily blooms this year, and think it’s because I repeated this about 4 times this season.

I find the traps to be very effective against Japanese beetles for me in Virginia. It's called "RESCUE! Japanese & Oriental Beetle Trap". I also found an essential oil blend (Donaldson Farms Japanese Beetle Trap Attractant) to refresh the attractant.

Franny's hydrangea is a "shooting star", I also had it in baby pink called, "pink paracel".

Japanese Beetles ---- here is how to get rid of them .....Put on a pair of gloves ( the grippy ones are the best ) .... then just start picking the Beetles off one at a time and smash them between your fingers ..... Believe me you won't feel a thing .... Except happy that you got rid of them .... In my yard they like to feast on my flowers and spraying them just doesn't work ... !!! ..... Hugs ..... Shirlene

Franny's Hydrangea looks like the Hydrangea macrophyllum ' Fuji Waterfall '
    I had in my garden.
