Really want to thank all the people commenting such nice things! This was one of the first videos I put together so I know it’s not perfect and I’m really happy so many people are enjoying it. Never thought so many people would be seeing this, much love to all you guys!
As someone who started playing during the enternal format, it feels very strange that none of the decks are meta relevant as of now, and people are calling for the return of cards like Stallio and Engage, really shows how fondly this time is looked upon already. Great video too.
Nah the powercreep has been heavy enough that even if all of those deck returns to their glory days they won't be dominating the format like they once did years ago
Fun fact : Despite getting mirage stallio banned Salamangreat deck still won YCS utrecht 2020 by beating 3-axis dragon link deck in final). Truely TOSS format is one of the greatest format of yugioh ever especially will be known for multiple control decks dominating the meta.
I love this video so much. This format was also what brought me into the competitive side of yugioh in salamangreat. I loved salamangreat for its budget friendliness and how recursive it was.
can't believe I'm your 30th sub and 103rd view on this vid, criminally underrated; you've very accurately retold the story of the Eternal Format here and I thank you for it
This format is easily one of the best in the game, especially in its later days. Close to the end of the format, the big 4 were still the best, but t2 and rogue options were much more powerful, and all four of the decks were incredibly cheap. Plus, nothing else really operates on the same wavelength as these four decks did, other than maybe the pure combo iterations of thunder. Even then, I truly, truly miss the slow, grindy advantage play of striker, the combo control play of salad, and the recursive midranginess of orcust. This video is good stuff, and I’m incredibly excited to see more
build my first deck ,Salamangreat, right at the sneak peak event of dark neostorm. had fun times at locals. I had bad luck with large events; overslept on the first day of London YCS 2019 and forgot to bring a pen so wasn't able to enter side events so did some trading a and went to the comic con in the same building. on the London regional right after the November ban-list, i entered the event with evil eyes expecting none of the big 4, oh boy i was wrong. Faced 2 scrap orcust and 1 salad players without nib and lancea.
Awesome vid. Marks my favourite time to play in Yugiohs history. I was one of those many SS Orcust players that topped YCS Sydney 2020 you mentioned. What a great nostalgia trip this was to watch
You give strong summoning salt vibes. This is a great documentary about the format I started playing right at the end of. Hopefully you keep this quality up
Bro I watched this and thought it would have at least 50k views by now dang. Thank you so much for making this man Eneternal format was pretty fun ngl especially before mystic mine.
My favorite format ever, it's when I really got into the game and I love seeing formats with multiple good decks (while for 2020 we just saw Lich and dragon). I want Colossus back so bad
Greetings from TH-cam recommendations! As a casual, it was interesting to observe the format's lifespan from the outside, and a thorough documentation of it in retrospect is nice. This was an enjoyable little history lesson. Good work. Side note: funny enough, in my casual playgroup, 4 of us have each built 1 of the Eternal Format decks, forming our own little eternal format.
Awesome video dude! Really interesting to see the whole history of this format since I've started picking up the game again after the "slaughter" of a ban list that happend in Jan., where all the 4 decks got killed. Even tho it's kinda funny how the only one who's still considered somewhat meta is a mix of Sky Striker and Mystic Mine. I guess this deck truely is "eternal".
Its funny how that the Salamangreat archetype has this gimmick called Reincarnation Link Summoning and here you see the deck perform well even after many banlist hits.
One of the longest format in history, I srill renember barely learning how to play back then. I glad that my favourite deck of all time, Dragon Link, survieved the TOSS's slaughter and evolved into a competitive monster as pay back for other decks during TOSS format that Abuse the Dragon engine. I still want my Argapain back.
I stopped playing because TOSS just wasn't fun. I then came back to the game in Tear 0. I am very thankful that Konami learned from their mistakes and they know now how to absolutely murder a deck
Excellent video. Lots of great memories. Came across this video while looking for decklists to make my Eternal Format decks IRL and this really helped narrow down what point in time from this format I wanted to build for. I like having older formats/mirror matches built for friends or other local players to play and see some YGO history.
Eternal Format holds an incredibly special place in my heart. I started playing in tournaments - locals, specifically - around September of 2018, my Freshman year of high school, after quickly meeting a group of people who enjoyed the hobby I loved most the same as me and being recommended to go to my current OTS. I went through it all: Gouki Rhongo combos with Soul Charge, Extra-Linking, and Gumblar, Sky Striker stealing my monsters with Widow Anchor every time I took a breath, Salad slowly outgrinding me, Orcust Normal Summoning Neo-Space Connector, Colossus telling me no, even Mystic Mine making me cry in the bathroom of a UDS when I realized Naturia Beast can't negate Metaverse. And yet, the amount I learned, the friends I made, and the decks I played during that time frame, all the way up until the banlist of January 2020, have solidified Eternal Format as the best format I've ever played in so far. Thank you for making this documentary. Eternal Format wasn't even that long ago, and yet it feels like a decade, one that I'll never forget.
Comments like this genuinely make my day, when I made this I was in a very similar mindset. It was such a nostalgic period and me and so many of my friends really got into the competitive scene around this time. Makes me so happy that other people found a similar special place in their hearts for this era 💕
I fell out of the game as a kid around 2007 or 2008 and recently returned with Master Duel, and learning about the history of the game in between my falling out and now is really interesting, especially a format featuring the deck I decided to build in Master Duel, Sky Strikers. Great informative video!

As someone who got into yugioh by watching reaction video of the Jan. 2020 F&L update, and was almost entirely ignorant of the details of TOSS format before this video, this was informative, super entertaining and weirdly heartwarming. Great job. 👍
A great video, thanks for the work, really enjoyed it! I started playing yugioh in July 2021 with Sky Striker as my first real deck & its really cool to see the history of that and the other decks at the years prior
Bro how am I just now seeing this? I started playing competitively during toss/eternal format, and I absolutely loved it, I adore all 4 decks, especially thunder, I love thunder so damn much man. This was great man, good job, lots of nostalgia. Bring back my boys Colossus and harp, and dangers to 2! Cant leave stallio and engage waiting on them
Loved this commentary/mini - doc. Found myself another yugi tuber to binge. Fun learning about these formats as a returning player. Keep up the great work
Amazing video, made me so nostalgic. I remember people getting rid of cards of the big 4 after every banlist, just to buy them back at a higher price 2 weeks later xD
I'm only niwnust finding your channel but holy shit i love it so much I can't believe it's not bigger than it is. I really hope you get your breakout video soon because selfishly I just want more of these video essays!
This is the format I came back to back to yugioh to, me a Felgrand player trying to survive against all of those giants and celebrating every win I could when I managed to take a game from those 4 giants! It's weird because prefer TOSS format over current (July 2021) format but I don't especially miss it. Oh and great video btw this is one hell of a documentary! Thanks for covering this!
Current and TOSS are getting compared alot lately and honestly i think its kinda funny, i do like both formats but I honestly think TOSS was so nice and balanced bc of the 4 best decks counter balancing each other, do wish current was like that, but the diverse field is cool in its own way 😄
@@sleepyygo I do appreciate the variety that this format gives to players but it indeed lacks the circle where each deck would counterbalance each other and I found that aspect really neat! It leaves to wonder what full power TOSS could do against the current meta! I mean not that I would take advantage of it though, I am forever a felgrand player after all, just trying everything to make my favorite cards be able to take some games some times win against the meta.
Best format ever tho ! It's nice that the 4 decks still were equal in top cuts so there was «better decks» and each one could beat the other. I miss this format man...
@@sleepyygo I think there is some balance in the format right now exept for Dragon link maybe but the thing is, back then the format was nice because each deck was a perfect respond to the other one. Also they were all doing their own personnal thing, not like a dragoon package or invoked etc..
@@MrBleubleubleu i really enjoy triangle formats where the decks play like rock paper scissors and there is no definitive correct answer most of the time. This format feels a bit too centralized for my taste but dlink is alot of fun so I’m not really gonna complain tbh
Salad was my reintroduction to yugioh. It will always be my favorite from this format and one of my favorite decks of all time for that reason. The nostalgia I feel for this era of yugioh. Up until COVID adamancipator and eldich was the peak of the game imo. MR4 might get a lot of hate but for me personally this was the best time to play yugioh
This format was the format that got me back into playing yugioh. Watching this video felt like walking down memory lane. I still remember those same emotions seeing the hits on every ban list thinking, "damn Sky Strikers is dead now" only to be playing the deck again a week later. Really enjoyed the video. p.s: Engage to 1 pls :p
This is in my opinion the second best format of all time right after burning abyss shaddoll format. i'm an not only say that because lunalight orcust is one of my favorite decks of all time, especially because if you summon tiger king against thunder dragon and say "detach material activate effect" and answer the question "what dos that do" with "you lose", but also because playing rouge decks against striker, salamangreate or orcust felt so good. it's not that you get stomped out of the game turn 1 but actually got into a highly skill intensive grind game.
This video is incredible!! I just got back into yugioh right at the end of the eternal format, so I didnt really understand the context behind a lot of things that were going on then. This video really helped me understand what was going on!
Video was so good I wanted an explanation of the next format. It's crazy considering that I started playing 2020 summer, which is basically D link format.
I didnt start playing competitive till 2020 so i missed eternal format but after finally getting around to watching Vrains i fell in love with Salad due to the character Soulburner being one of my favorites. The deck was cheap, fun, and remains one of my favorite decks to run in tournaments. Circle and Stalio are back so here’s hoping Gazelle comes back to 2-3 next list🤞 🔥
I do gotta say, I did like this format. This was the time when I came back into the game back in august of 2019, and taking a 5 year break to see what the game transformed into was nothing but a literal shock. I did get why players were tired of these decks, but I will always hold this format in high regards as it’s the one that taught me how much the game truly changed.
This was around the time when I started playing yugioh. At the time, I was tired of it and wanted it to go away, but looking back at it now, I wish I could go back.
I think another factor that made this format so fun was not only how the big 4 checked each other but the rogue decks around also checked the top decks. Rogue decks of the format were strong such as guru, altergeist, pendulum, and the Feb 2019 version of lunalight. Also even though many decks used the orcust engine, they were all unique. Lunalight orcust would do their rank 4 spam and apollousa end board, cyber dragon had megafleet and infinity. Compared to now where decks try to put 2 monsters on field for verte into Dragoon and call it a "competitive rogue deck" . So boring.
What I liked the most about this format was the final moments. Because Thunder Dragon and Orcust became more midrange deck than combo. Thus there was no deck which made you scoop turn 1 unless you have drawn powerful going second cards.
Theres an argument for this, thought personally I liked the format the most when rusty had been banned and it felt as if each deck was individually strong with good counterplay, the introduction of SS Orcust as a popular strategy shifted the balance at the end too heavily for it to be the best part of the format imo
I remember Orcust topping with Summon Sorc right before the ban. The timeline of competitive orcust sort of begins with the Summon Sorc Danger version that only played a smaller engine. That german player got top 4 at the YCS if I recall correctly.
24:51 And Now Sky Strikers still continues to live on with a Structure Deck in tow and a Freaking 2500 Atk In-Archetype Mecha with a Kaiju Effect! This Deck Just won't Go Away! And sadly, that's mainly due to how Outlandishly Powerful this deck is! In Fact, I can say that for Just about EVERY Damn One Monster Archetype Engine Deck that Exists! Starting from Invoked, to Sky Strikers, Nightmares, Eldlitch, Phantasm Spiral, and now Fallen of Albez and Clavkiys/Magikey Decks! Cards that continue to break games due to Sheer Engine power from their Support cards.
Yo this was a great video! I do remember picking the game back up in summer of 2019 and thought it was alright. (I played with Sky Striker at the time) Now looking back, it was a pretty cool time for the game. : ) Coming from a guy who mostly plays old formats! Would be down to play more!
I think we’ve been in the Second Eternal Format since Secret Slayers/Duel Overload. 2019 was the year of Budget and I really miss that, with so many decks that were viable at a fair price looking back as time went on, it showed Konami wanted players to have a better chance. Thennnnn we had 2020 happened and Budget Players were made practically non-existant again.
We’ve been in a rut since the secret slayers release imo, everything is very expensive, no real events to get people excited (remote duel ofc but thats much harder to get excited for at least imo), and to match the prices and the lul the best decks have been quite rough in terms of enjoyment to deal with imo. Hopefully we regain some momentum soon but the last few formats have all felt similar, and not in a great way
@@sleepyygo I was a bit worried when Ignition Assault came out with Lightning storm but I was playing Shaddolls at the time so I was like; Okay so the formats not as budget but it still has a wide variety of budget decks to utilize. I had taken a break myself cause of personal reasons until May but I kept up with the game, and when Overload and Secret Slayers hit; I began to realize the game was becoming unaffordable again. Even as I tried to go back to Salad having fully completed the deck the powercreep was just too much. Shaddolls got even more pricey too with the Invoked Buyouts and continued Shortprints, The Dogmatica Engine, Schism...Etc. Granted we did get a deck like Virtual World but without TTT the deck wasn’t gonna see much success, ontop of it being the single hardest deck to pilot of the modern era. When The Lockdowns died down I went hunting for The Dragon Link stuff I would need as (surprisingly) it was the cheapest out of the top decks to build off what I owned, and Im still playing it to this day.
@@Nephalem2002 it’s actually really funny I was in a very similar scenario. Up to the duel overload release I was mostly just playing lunalight because It was what I had until they finally decided to ban tiger in quarantine. So I mostly bounced around decks until I saw how easily I could build d-link a few formats ago and I just held onto the cards and kept playing the deck ^_^
I got my first and only invite to the National Championship during this format with True Draco. Arguably the most ruthless format the game has seen in a long time. Also, mystic mine still legal kekw
this is a good, well researched video. This format was the first time I followed Yu-Gi-Oh competitively and it's interesting to see how many people remember this format fondly when I vividly remember people HATING Strikers' engage into engage, Thunder's big body floodgates with destruction protection, Orcust's "any two monsters is full combo" to play on both turns and Salamangreat's hand traps and crazy grind game. I guess I'm the only one who didn't like this format much 😂
Cant watch now. But absolutly saving this for later (edit) after watching this was very enlightening for me (i had missed the eternal format during my hiatus from the game) and now seeing this i see why there is so much love and support for the format
Took this long for this video to show up on my feed? Crazy considering how good it is. Though, when I think of “eternal format” I think of 2016’s Kozmo, Monarch, PK Fire lol. Is that… relatively old now?
Thank you for this, well yes there were unfair things going on, but under those 4 top decks it was always a very balanced feel and the matches were always grind games that had a lot of intensity
Really want to thank all the people commenting such nice things! This was one of the first videos I put together so I know it’s not perfect and I’m really happy so many people are enjoying it. Never thought so many people would be seeing this, much love to all you guys!

It’s a shame, such even rep in top cut isn’t something ive really seen since then
@@sleepyygo I think there is some balance in the format right now exept for Dragon link maybe but the thing is, back then the format was nice because each deck was a perfect respond to the other one.
Engage to 1 would make my year 🥰
@@sleepyygo it happened :)
@@xInfernoDragon I woke up this morning so happy 🥰 we made it!
Im really glad you enjoyed!
I love this may the eternal format become truly eternal
Sky Strikers were sure popular but Orcust was my fave deck of that time.
Ya this was the format that really got me back into yugioh. really great video I enjoyed it!
Im glad you liked it ❤️
Surprised you have so few subs, this video is great! You've earned another one
Thanks alot! I’m really happy so ppl seem to like it ❤️
This was around the time when I started playing yugioh. At the time, I was tired of it and wanted it to go away, but looking back at it now, I wish I could go back.
Same 😞
I think another factor that made this format so fun was not only how the big 4 checked each other but the rogue decks around also checked the top decks.
So boring.
God i love this format
Me too bro me too
And now we are here still playing invoked cards from 2017
smh couldn't be me, imagine playing Winda in 2021
@@sleepyygo or construct it would be a shame its going to get banned again :)
Yesh the deck was certainly on the map before DANE but I just felt they really jumped into relevancy with the release of ding and cres
I CALLED IT!
Dang, I really do miss this format. Eventually I need to go back to it.
Yo this was a great video! I do remember picking the game back up in summer of 2019 and thought it was alright. (I played with Sky Striker at the time) Now looking back, it was a pretty cool time for the game. : )
Coming from a guy who mostly plays old formats! Would be down to play more!
i really miss these formats:(
Easily the best yugioh video I’ve seen
Awe tysm 💕
This video was fantastic, thank you!
My pleasure
Wow a newish channel. Can't wait to see how much you grow. You make good content. Only suggestion is maybe a better mic/ noise reduction
Thanks! This video is quite old at this point, i got a new mic recently and I think the audio quality has improved, hope you stick around! 💕
And now sky striker mystic mine continues to win YCS
Great video and information! Keep it up!
Amazing video! Subbed.
I love the quality content. Keep it up man!
❤️
But absolutly saving this for later
(edit) after watching this was very enlightening for me
(i had missed the eternal format during my hiatus from the game)
and now seeing this i see why there is so much love and support for the format
Im here wanting to play sky striker but cant because of the ishizu shufflers and the bystials
I started playing when lunalight orcust was made and that was the first deck I built
I love luna sm
@@sleepyygo same I've been wanting to build a new orcust deck but without harp it isnt that good
@@Fatkiller1997 yeah ive tried grinding db with hella vriants, just feels way too fragile imo
@@sleepyygo yeah dies to easily to handtraps
@@Fatkiller1997 very unfortunate, such a cool theme
Crazy to see all the Striker cards they thought to ban before they got round to Engage.
We could’ve avoided all of this 😅
If this was a time wizard format what would be banlist be? What would the cardpool be?
🤷🏻♂️
What an amazing video, 100% subbing
Ty!
Took this long for this video to show up on my feed? Crazy considering how good it is. Though, when I think of “eternal format” I think of 2016’s Kozmo, Monarch, PK Fire lol. Is that… relatively old now?
Haha i think thats fair, that format went on forever
Thank you for this, well yes there were unfair things going on, but under those 4 top decks it was always a very balanced feel and the matches were always grind games that had a lot of intensity
I want to play eternal format tournaments
Basically, those four only fell from grace when Konami decided to go to town on them with the banhammer.
My favorite format , I only hated salamangreat :)
I mained orcust engine in various decks .
