I absolutely love Captive Prince series for one reason. It's the most realistic and non toned down portrayal of two people truly hating each other, that are forced to work together to achieve one goal. During this they are learning to respect each other, to appreciate each other company and only then they fall in love. It's a very complex development, which I enjoyed reading about.
It's obviously an adult book and it discusses mistreatment, abuse and rape, but it's never done for entertainment. It's a way to start a discussion on a difficult topic through a fantasy world. More so all even remotely romantic scenes between the characters are 100% consensual.
Penguin did a big disadvantage to this book when they've split it. The first book doesn't end on a right note.

I feel the same about Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. I felt like the whole book just made no sense and was pointless. I just kind of block the Cursed Child out of my mind. I pretend that it didn't happen. It's not Harry Potter to me.

Just saying, I don't think it should be mandatory for an author to have LGBT characters. I have nothing against it but I don't see how it's a problem if a character isn't part of the LGBT community. Everyone is different and has different opinions and I don't think you should ridicule an author just because they don't have LGBT characters in their books. Obviously diverse books and characters are good but if an author doesn't want that to be part of their story I think everyone should be okay with that.

    • @RileyMarie_

+Hplekk18 if you are referring to Cursed Child, my problem wasn't that the characters were straight. It was that all their actions and words made it seem like they were gay

I completely agree with your opinion on The Wrath and the Dawn! I've been trying to finish it for months now and I just can't. (So many people seemed to love it in 2015 so I wanted to know what all of the fuss was about.) I think it might be a book I give up on which doesn't happen often. I'm about halfway through and her wishy-washy feelings for the prince is just so annoying. I feel like the story could have had so much more potential if it had focused solely on her and she wasn't falling in love with him. But I haven't read any of the other books you mentioned so I can't speak on those.

  • @Mel-mu1hk

Everyone talks about the queer baiting in cursed child, but I respectfully disagree. I did not like the book, but I think Albus and Scorpius show that it is okay for straight dudes to be affectionate and caring towards each other, and that the love between friends is equally important.

I've not read Captive Prince, so I can't really judge it, but I have always found it hypocritical that most booktubers (quite rightly) call out tropes that are even mildly abusive or problematic in m/f romances, but they seem to have absolutely no problem with blatant sexual abuse and rape in this book.

Happy birthday! And I love the cat ears. Those are so cool!
Most of those books are ones I refuse to read, for pretty much the reasons you said. The one exception is TWatD, which I DNF'd anyway. I could not get into it, because I felt like it didn't deviate enough from the source material.
And I haven't read Captive Prince, but I swear it sounds more and more like it was originally erotica while it was being written and then the author went "actually I'm going to add an actual plot in this book somewhere."

  • @MissShinkou

The only reason I didn't absolutely hate The Cursed Child was because it felt so much like fanfiction to me, I can't think of it as canon. To me, that's just not what happened after the seventh book and that way I'm kind of alright with it.
    Doesn't make any sense :D

  • @lenaertsjelke

Cursed Child was just so awful, and it had so many little plot points that I found so cool. Like Harry's son being in Slytherin, that actually excited me because it sounded so interesting. But the book was awfully written, Voldemort getting laid? really? the way I described it was "a really bad fanfiction," basically.
How stupid was the plot line though? not even just the time travel. The whole plot line with Voldemort's kid that was copy and pasted from The Omen. >.>

For some reason I really love these videos. And it's not because of the books themselves (I always like to read books for myself to find out where I stand), I just love the honesty. Obviously I love hearing about books people love, but it's fascinating to see the books people don't enjoy. Because there is nothing wrong with not liking something, and I feel like people try to conceal those opinions because they are afraid of hurting someone, but everyone is allowed their own opinions. So yeah, just wanted to say great video lol.

    • @jordanpearson9883
      @jordanpearson9883 7 ปีที่แล้ว

Although I will say I do not plan on ever reading Colleen Hoover after reading Whitney's review. How disgusting. I think that books ABOUT abuse are really important and should be written and read, but clearly that book was not ABOUT abuse, it just romanticized a clearly abusive relationship. I think that's so gross.

  • @Hannah_54

Honestly, I hated the majority of books I read this year and DNFd so many books (literally been in a slump the whole time!). But my most hated was the book I was most anticipating- Lady Midnight, which I waited 4 years for! I've not found anyone else on booktube who didn't like it, but the characters were boring and the plot wasn't great-the best parts were when the old characters returned. Really hope 2017 will be a better reading year for me!

Yeah I tried reading two of Colleen Hoover's books and just couldn't. Her books are like the first ones I've dnfed. In one of her books she used the word "whore" in a way that I just didn't like and didn't really find funny at all. Idk it was off-putting. I had other issues as well.

Happy birthday!!! :D I hated November 9 so MUCH, it made me so angry and I was really confused because everyone seems to love her books and I was hate reading it by chapter 2! I really enjoyed the CP trilogy when I read it, but I went in not knowing anything about the endgame relationship so I read it without any preconceptions and I probably enjoyed it because of that, but I definitely agree with your points on the book. I hated the Cursed Child! Everything was wrong and I just... ughhh :( The characterization was so off! I couldn't believe the mess they made of the trio, especially Harry :'(

Thank you for your review. I was thinking about reading Captive prince but you just save me from that bad taste you talked about.

Oh, but I loved this video. I might actually enjoy Least Favorite Books videos more than Favorites...because I am petty and love to hate on crappy things. Oh well. ;)

already said so on twitter but, happy birthday!!
cursed child is such a masterpiece of awful. i thought it veered into "so bad it's good" territory, but i did read it after a really horrible round of comics. I read a lot of crap this year, but I'll give my Worst to flash volumes 6 to...8, i think? from the nu52 run. Sexist, racist, homophobic, & bad characterization in general. It's a miracle I read all of it
Glad I never got into Colleen Hoover and Captive Prince honestly sounds worse every time I hear about it.

I couldn't agree more about November 9, or Colleen Hoover novels in general. I've read a few of them and I've disliked every single one of them.

Wow reading that review makes my blood boil! I've mostly heard great things about Colleen Hoover but after reading that with such detailed examples I will never pick up anything by her. That's such trash. And that plot twist! Hell. Fucking. No. No way. Bye. (Just junking about big booktubers raving about her books is making me kinda sick too...)
