I have to agree with you regarding, "Me Before You". I went into it sort of bracing myself for an emotional tsunami, where I'd end up going through a box of tissues from all of the sobbing and ugly crying, and other than a minute where I got a bit teary-eyed, I didn't really have the reaction I was expected, at all. I kind of thought, "Is that it?" I found other things to like about it, but just not the stunner that I was led to believe it would be.
I watched the film first so I was imaging Sam claflin and emilia Clarke when reading the book and they're two of my fave actors so that's why I cried a lot. I cried more at me before you though

I completely understand what you meant with the kind of writing in More happy than not and Aristotle & Dante!! I really loved A&D, but I had a hard time connecting with the characters because I didn't understand their actions, yet I really loved them.

If you would like, you should read the regular The Arabian Nights and come back to the novel. The original is 1000 pages, but you can read children's and illustrated versions to give you more context.

I would love to hear more about the other books that have been biggest disappointments. I felt the same way with passenger. And I think I still gave it a 4/5 stars, since the story was so unique.
Feel exactly the same about "Me Before You" i read it because of the trailer but was not at all what i was expecting! My sister loved it though so i can see how many people are absolutely in love with it.
They're pretty different. I really liked both of them. Depends on what you disliked about The Siren - like if it was the writing, you probably wouldn't want to read The Selection, but if it was the story that doesn't affect The Selection. The characters aren't really similar but they're not too different I guess, like you could probably tell they're written by the same person but I don't really know since I already knew that from the start.

I loved 'A Thousand Nights". I was also really confused at first and really had to get used to the writing style/storytelling. But I think once you are able to get past that it is (for a retelling) a original and magical story with a strong female main character. Plus I was happy that there was no romance it in, that was nice for a change in a sort of fairy tale retelling :')

I didnt connect at all with the characters and for some reason the concept of memory alteration didnt sit well with me at all. I ended up, like you, giving it a two star rating.

Anyway, you definitely should check out the Hush Hush series. They're really amazing books and I never hear anyone talk about them. A book I was disappointed with was Anna and French Kiss. There was so hype around it, so I thought it would be a really good contemporary read, but I couldn't get past the first 100 pages. Very disappointed! Saying that, I may try to pick it up again at some point :)

If you haven't read it already I would definitely recommend reading The Killables by Gemma Malley. It is a great first book and the two that also go along with it, The Disappearances and The System, are also good reads.

Have you read We Were Liars? If not you should read it it is amazing with such a shocking twist! Also you should read The Girl Who Came Back and The Girls (even though both endings are ever so slightly disappointing) x

the siren disappointed me too I was so excited to get it and after I read it it was like whats going on ! I thought that I will get to see some mermaid stuff or so and at the first chapter I thought that the main character was a boy but I am such huge fan of the author and the selection is one of the best books in my life 💖
When it comes to the siren...not sure if you knew this but there is a self published version. If you can ever get your hands on it, that's the one I read and loved. I could be wrong but I think the self published one is different and for sure better.

I wouldn't call More Happy Than Not "quirky." That is an interesting perspective. It is very accurate to the Bronx and Bronx culture so it is probably the most relatable YA I have ever read. My issue with it was that it was so painful that I wasn't even sure how to rate it, and that makes me hesitant to recommend it. My disappointment this year is Vassa in the Night. I just thought I was going to fangirl a lot and love it to death, but I didn't. Still gave it 3 1/12 - 4 stars but I didn't adore it like I expected. My biggest all time disappointment was Queen of Hearts. There was so much hype surrounding it but it felt like a rough draft to me than a completed novel. I felt like interesting concepts kept being brought up and then dropped, nothing was fleshed out etc.
I also thought that "A Thousand Nights" was a huge disappointment! I had picked it up because of great reviews, but it really did not have a clear plot or much explanation for the magic.

I tend to stay away from "overhyped" books these days - meaning I wait until the hype dies down and I can start seeing reviews of people being disappointed in them as well. Like I literally JUST got ACOTAR & Asking For It because I have seen some reviews where people are pointing out some issues with it as well. I feel like it makes for a WAY better reading experience when I either don't know what to expect or I am not expecting something that will blow my socks off. That probably makes me a bad booktuber, but nowadays I'd honestly rather read the underhyped/not-so-hyped book than a book that EVERYONE is obsessed with at that moment. BUT I did read Me Before You & LOVED it. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions and if I hadn't seen people who didn't really like it, I may not have had such a great experience. Time MATTERS when you're reading a new book - that's all I have to say! (sorry for the super long comment, omg)/////
