It might be controversial, but I still don't understand why contemporary books about normal teenagers having issues with their family, school, friends, or mental illness meet some perfect and amazing cute boys or girls that later love them to death and change their whole lives keep getting published. It's like telling us (teenagers, especially girls since we are the main audiences) that you need another person to change your life, fix your behavior, and solve your own damn problems. I only started reading these types of books this year, and it only took me two tries to realize that these are written so bad. Instead of waiting for a boy who just moved next to your house yesterday to make you feel loved, how about being a mature person and working your way up? Sorry if it sounds harsh, but this is the way I feel. We are portrayed so bad that some people start thinking about teenagers like stupid, ignorant, and materialistic. It's amazing to see Emily as an adult having the same opinion. Thank you. 😄
Han Nguyen I completely agree with you, that's my pet peeve with ya contemporary. I read My Heart and Other Black Holes two years ago and it was all good and nice until the boy came around and magically fixed everything. I felt like throwing the book across the room. NO, that's not how depression goes away, stop telling people they're not enough by themselves and need to be saved and fixed! Hmpf.
I know this is the oldest comment on the internet, but I so agree with you! People have this notion that perfect relationship will solve everything, oh NO it does not!
As someone who suffers with severe anxiety and mild depression i agree with you life’s not like that and for it to always be someone else to save them like why can’t or be a best friend maybe or a family member if they’re going to make it about that
I followed your beauty channel first so I was super happy to find you're in booktube too! But what's best about your channel is that you're not as IN LOVE with YA as literally almost the rest of booktube. I've read quite a few book recommendations by them and I get so frustrated because some of them are so overhyped. Maybe it's an age thing. Keep doing your thang!
kikirockslikecrazy So is it kind of cheezy, not too ambition/teen-ish books ? That's how it sounds to me but I don't know because English is not my first language 😐
I refuse to read HP&The Cursed Child! For me the series ended after Deathly Hallows and reading that book would ruin a perfectly fine endling! And so many people hate that book anyways so I'm not even going to try. From the other books I was only interested in the Neil Gaiman book but now that you're so dissappointed with it I'm not sure...
Honestly you got it right, don't read HP & The Cursed Child! As for Neil Gaiman, it really depends on your taste... I'm not even sure if I'll read more books from him :S
LifewithEmilyFox I really like Neil Gaiman, so I know I'm biased, but you have American Gods behind you on your shelf, and I really think it's worth a read. It's my favourite book. definitely got a lot of fantasy and weird stuff, but I started reading it as something to just read on the train going to uni and ended up reading all of it! if you don't like it, then you probably won't like other Neil Gaiman books, but that's okay 😁
Start with Coraline (absolutely loved it, it's for children, kind of) or one of the shorter ones. American Gods is great, but probably hit or miss, I'd say the others are more accessible.
I completely agree about the love tropes and how falling in love with a boy will magically fix you. As soon as something like that starts to happen in a book, I'm out. being disabled and gay for girls, I can't say that meeting a cute boy has made me better or y'know...done anything for me. and I agree that it is not healthy at all, it freaks me out how much I used to idealise that as a teenager.
See that's exactly why I get frustrated when people tell me I'm just getting too old for YA... No I just see all the issues in YA now that I'm not 14 anymore! I still love plenty of YA books - the ones that aren't problematic and wouldn't have screwed my views, about love for example, as a teenager!
LifewithEmilyFox Yes! I still love YA, and I'll still read some popular stuff, but it can be difficult reading things and knowing that someone younger is reading it and thinking that's how the world is. It's not! That's not even close to real life!
I haven't read Finding Audrey, but TRUST ME when I say that Sophie Kinsella's adult stand alone (because I haven't started the Shopaholic series yet) are SO GOOD. So funny, awkward, lovable. I highly highly recommend them.
LifewithEmilyFox She's actually one of the authors that I trust the most to deliver an incredible story. I suggest either starting with Can You Keep A Secret or I've Got Your Number. They're all heavy in secondhand embarrassment. She's great.
Kinsellas stand alone are so funny. Think Bridget Jones, but well written. My absolute favourite is Can you keep a secret? The shopaholic series is just a pain. I couldn't even get halfway through the first book.
I love how blunt and honest you are, its so refreshing! You have some books on here that I really enjoyed, but I can totally see where you are coming from about your criticisms and reasons you didn't like it. A lot of those tropes also don't work for me MOST of the time, but sometimes i still fall in love with the book if its done well or just magically works for me somehow.
I have come to the conclusion that while I love a lot of YA fantasy or dystopian books, YA contemporary just isn't usually my thing. I have liked a few, but maybe it's just because I'm older, but most of them fall flat or annoy me (some of the frequently used tropes just make me cringe). Fangirl was one of the ones that I actually DNF'ed. I just couldn't get through it. You are not alone my friend. Lol Take care and merry Christmas!!!!
In general I do feel like I might be too old to enjoy them but then once in a while I find an awesome one which makes me think we just become more selective! Merry Christmas :)
Sorry ANNIHILATION didn't work for you. I've been meaning to get to that for a couple of years and hopefully I'll get to it this new year. Great video! 😊
HP and the Cursed Child was so awful. I can see how it'd be a great play to see. It seemed like visually, it'd be impressive. But the story was absolutely awful. It didn't feel like Harry Potter. It didn't follow the original canon involving time turners. and WHAT was that with the train trolley witch?! I couldn't even finish it. Totally agree about Fantastic Beasts-the movie was amazing. I will say that I watched it a second time and it was kind of slow BUT I feel like it had to be to set up the next four movies, so I'm still optimistic and Newt was so adorable and cute.
Creating&Co I bought the Cursed Child in the summer and I still haven't finished it, even though I normally finish a book in a few days. I absolutely hate it. I've tried to bring myself to finish it, but I just can't. It feels like reading a 10-year-old's fanfiction.
Camila Go It was pretty bad. I also was interested enough at first, but then half-way through I was like, "Whatever, it's an easy read, so I'll finish it..." The end was ridiculous to me. And super rushed...!
I was sooo disappointed with "Everything Everything" too! Thought I was the only one. Love your book reviews! Can you please put the links for each book in the description box?
I've been watching your channel for a few months, but your feelings on Everything, Everything just made you my favorite booktuber. I'm so GLAD someone finally understands why it just wasn't that great. :)
I agree with what you said about YA. I don't understand why it has to be about a boy accepting the girl for who she is and therefore she can now be okay with who she is. I wish it would be more about finding self-love. A quote I think sums it up well is "Real love is responsibility, compromise, selflessness, being present, and all. Fake love is magic, excitement, false hope, infatuation, and getting high off the potential that another person is going to save you from yourself". Video super en passant :) J'adore voir une Quebecoise avec autant de succes!
There's not enough books about girls just doing amazing things on her own or with friends... Idk if authors and publishers think it would be boring or not as interesting but I would love to read more of those! Ah merci :)
I guess part of getting old is having lesser tolerance for the usual YA novels (at least for me). Looking for Alaska by John Green remains to be my favorite YA because it's so unlike the others that we're used to hearing about. You should also check out Rainbow Rowell's non-YA books and those by David Levithan. :)
I read Clockwork Angel recently and was so disappointed/pissed. I'm having similar experience to you with the super-hyped YA books. Guess I'm getting old! lol
Beshemoth Nah i wouldn't say that, this coming from someone thats not even a senior most YA novels have the same ridiculous cliches and plots but i can see why you'ld think so.
Hi Emily! I really like your channel, and I appreciate how honest you are with your reviews. I know YA can sometimes be quite derivative, but I think you would really enjoy the Six of Crows duology. It does get a lot of hype on book tube, but they are some of the few YA books that I think deserve the hype. Have a wonderful holiday season!
I almost cried out of relief when finding your channel (no kidding I've been looking around for an entire day) - thought it would be impossible to find good booktubers who didn't talk about only Y/A (and the same ones as well). Just can't stand the overused tropes and *ugh* unnecessary/uninteresting romance. Which there's, a lot of. Y/A have made me question if I might be aromantic.
Ella Strandberg oh God yeah! I don't really understand the fuss with YA contemporary, nothing seems to happen and everyone loves them! it's just the same story repeated with different characters. A brilliant contemporary though is A Man Called Ove, truly heartwarming
Ah I know that book! It's from a swedish author (I'm sweidhs!), my mum always rants about how much she loves the book. Should probably check it out. Have you read My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry, it's by the same author. Haven't read the book but heard a lot of great things about it. x
I agree with eeeeeverything that she said about Fangirl. I forced to read them and it's the only thing that I bought to my grandparents' house and they don't have good internet there so I was stuck with that book😂
You have a couple books on this list that I really enjoyed this year, but I definitely have to agree on The Ocean at the End of the Lane. It was just weird! It was my first Gaiman book, but I'm still interested in reading more from him. As for HP, I've heard lots of people say they didn't enjoy it that I'm not even going to attempt it. The series ended so great why ruin it for myself. Great video👍🏼
Your jumper is so fluffy, I could hug it Totally agree on storyline where literally the solution is only relying on someone else's love or attention... It makes me wonder if the author is desperate about finding "true love" (as opposed to "fake love")...
LOL watching this was an interesting experience. I was all with you and love watching people crap on books they don't like, especially really popular ones. Then you got to The Ocean At The End Of The Lane and I was like ''NOOOOOOOOO not this beautiful gem 😭 '' but I really like your honesty. Also I loved the fact that one other person in this world also didn't like Fangirl. Great video!
loved hearing your thoughts on these and I completely agree, I hate that whole 'saviour' trope in romance. I'd love to hear some of your all time favourite adult fiction books. All time favourite sci fi books as well :)
I really liked Fangirl, but I've skipped almost all fanfiction part. And then, when Carry On come out, I bought it and read it and like it a lot. Where's the logic here? :D
I read Annihilation when you talked about it back in October and wow, that book was just confusing. It was definitely suspenseful but I had a hard time with the authors descriptions. He tried to paint a vivid picture in your mind but gave you too much information that left you confused about what you had just read. And the ending was super weird! I'm still not even sure that I understood half of the book!
Totally agree with you on HP and everything everything! I was also disappointed by the firebird series by Claudia grey, fan girl and 3 dark crowns weren't my fav
I have the Southern Reach trilogy or Area X in the omnibus but I can't get passed the first part (Annihilation), so how can I read the remainder lol. I'm a grown ass woman of 48 and just last year started reading some YA books, some I love, others I cannot stand but then I don't read ahead to see what type they are beforehand and maybe its the same for me as you with the boy saves all. Thanks for sharing.
I totally agree with HP & the cursed child! I totally felt like I'm reading a fanfic. Btw, may I know what lipstick are u wearing in this video? I love how it works with you.
I have read the Annihilation book and I really liked it. For me it was the weirdest book of 2016. Those open ends and mysteries scared me a lot more than other books. Have you read something from Jodi Picoult? I suggest you to read a Storyteller by her.
SOMEONE FINALLY ADRESSED HOW DIFFERENT RON WAS!! It was bugging me so much he wasn't acting like himself at all! The whole book was sad to read and I barely could finish it :(
Neil Gaiman is my favourite author and he is someone who writes scary, spooky fairytales for adults, if that makes sense. For me he reminds that not all fairytales need to be beautiful and have happy endings. Having said that I really hope that you like his other books. Happy Reading!!
I actually liked HP and The Cursed Child! I was sceptical and I was told that it was okay so I read it not expecting to be in the world of the books. That's a theatre play and it hasn't been written by JK Rowling only so of course, it's different from the books. Being in this state if mind before reading it, I really enjoyed it.
I didn't hate HP&TheCursedChild as the rest of the world seems to, but I really can see its problems. However, I went to the play in London at the beginning of the month and it was absolutely amazing! It is so mindblowing that you don't have time to think about character development or whether characters were acting like they normally would do. It was more of a what if story and at the same time very nostalgic. I laughed out loud and cried my eyes out. It was really magic on a stage. So if you ever have the chance to see it, do it. It is worth every single minute of it (and I promise you won't mind the book so much after it). And Scorpius is actually the funniest character in the entire HP universe :) Love your chanel!
I liked Fangirl a lot because I used to be like Cath when I was 15 y/o, the actual plot if very simple and unoriginal but the memories it gave me... anyway, hope 2017 is full of good reads! :)
Ohhhhhh I just got an illumination about one of my fav books this past year or so: Reboot by Amy Tintera. At first, I was: this is way too weird, but I ended up so into it, I can't wait for the tome2... Even though I like Audrey Retrouvée so far, I kinda agree with you with the boy being the savior and all, but I still really enjoy it... but the fact that we dont know the big trauma, it's annoying... I hate not knowing things, which explain why I always read the last pages first... and i didn't mind the last pages of the curse child so I'll give it a go, even thought I know it won't be as good as the original HP. I've always liked screenplay manuscripts (the taming of the shrew is one of my all time fav), so we will see. Like on your main channel, I like "negative" videos so we know on what not spending money!!
Annihilation has 2 other books in the series, maybe that’s why the story was kind of left open at the end. I haven’t read them but maybe it all ties together?
So your channel is only 7 months old and you already have more than 17k subscribers? That's amazing! And guess what, I just subscribed. Couldn't help it since I also disliked The Ocean at the End of the Lane, and (specially) Fangirl 🤢 there are so few of us out there with those unpopular opinions
My first Niel Gailman was the graveyard book which I absolutely LOVED. I loved it so much I had to read more by him and started the ocean at the end of the lane which bored me and I struggled to finish. however knowing how amazing his story telling can be I will be picking up something else by him soon hopefully I will be sucked in like ibwas for the graveyard book. highly recommend the graveyard book!!
I'm totally with you on books heavily relying on a boy being the reason a girls "gets better" or whatever the case may be. I was disappointed in Finding Audrey too for that reason! I do like fangirl, but I also didn't like the fan fic! I hated it and ended up skipping them too lol. I had absolutely zero interest in picked up Carry On.
I love (good) YA books, but last year, I ended up putting them down for more Adult books. Hope to return to them this year as like you, alot of my most disappointing book were in YA. :(
I Love Neil Gaiman's story concepts, but for some reason (With 2 exceptions.) I have yet to be able to finish a book/story by him, whether it's for kids or not. I have no interest in giving up yet, but it's kind of frustrating. Was not crazy about 'Girl on the Train' by Paula Hawkins, I didn't like the lead character for various reasons, the story was fairly predictable...it did have some good suspense parts, and it was well written enough that I would willingly read other books by Paula Hawkins. The only other book wasn't one I disliked, it just wasn't what I expected though I do plan on buying the next book when it comes out: Mr. Penumbra's 24 hour bookstore.
I haven't read The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman, but The Graveyard Book was a very good read. I loved that book. American Gods wasn't too bad, but I highly recommend The Graveyard Book. :)
Ugh! Totally agree about the Cursed Child! Didn't like Albus's character and I was so disappointed with the portrayal of the other characters as well (Ron especially). Also Finding Audrey- I love most of Sophie Kinsellas stand alones but I didn't enjoy it at all.
Hi!, i love reading books like you, i would like to recommend you The Time Master trilogy from Louise Cooper, Hyperion from Dan Simmons and Foundation from I. Asimov. i like this channel, good job ! greetings from Spain!
i've never read any harry potters but it's one of my ny resolutions to read the whole series. Do i need to read fantastic beasts before the first harry potter book?
I really liked Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. I don't know whether it is because I am an actor myself but I feel that the main problem people have with it is that plays have to be written to novels. Plays have a time limit (Usually 90 - 120 minutes) whereas books can take whatever time limit they want so they have to fit more into a short space of time plus an interval so there has to be a half-point break in the story as well.
I KNOW I'M SUPER LATE TO THIS VIDEO BUT OH GOD FINALLY SOMEONE WHO DIDN'T LIKE "EVERYTHING EVERYTHING" EITHER AND FOR THE SAME REASON AS ME!!! Honestly, the whole "girl's life is terrible - girl meets cute boy - girl's life changes because of boy and is suddenly great" is my most hated trope ever bc it's so harmful! A great video
(I understand your opinion completely- this is just me stating mine about the subject).I think having someone in your life that understands you and makes you happy can help with mental illness, definitely. At 15, I suffered from extreme depression and anxiety. Then I met my boyfriend. While some days are still hard, they were easier then usual. He made me laugh and made me happy. And made me realize that I had a lot more to be happy about in my life then I originally thought. At 15, I didn't care about my grades or really have interest in anything. I didn't really have any friends either. The only reason I felt like I had to keep going was because I have two younger siblings who needed me and I loved. My life wasn't perfect and still isn't but when I got with my boyfriend it helped so much. He was also suffering with depression from the loss of his mother. I guess we kind of helped one another. I started caring more and ended up graduating with a great GPA. Now at 22 I'm in a much better place and am honestly so happy with my life, they are days that I feel depression creeping up but it's definitely not even as close to being as bad as it was. While it sounds cliché I'm glad I had my now husband help me when I was younger. (Again I'm not trying to be rude just stating my experience and opinion on the YA contemporary trope :D we all have different opinions and different reading experiences :D. Although I'm not much of a contemporary lover, I guess I can kind of connect with them) ( I also realize that not every high school relationship works out the way mine has)
To be honest it sounds like you're the exception not the rule :) There's a reason people that aren't in a stable place will be recommended to avoid relationships (think AA that have to wait 12 months) simply because they're in a fragile state. Doesn't mean it's not nice to have someone there for you, nor that it won't work out for everyone but in general chances are the relationship won't last and the person will end up at square one or worst!
I agree about Fangirl..did not like it. On the other hand, Eleanor and Park was fantastic, loved that book so much. And I liked Landline, too! Still must read Attachments by RR. I think I will skip Carry On.
I totally appreciate you saying that about Finding Audrey. I love reading books with my 16 year old daughter. (only because I have a 16 year old little girl in my soul that refuses to grow up) I considered getting that book for us to read/discuss, as my daughter also deals with anxiety, ptsd, and a bit of agoraphobia. But, you are absolutely right. No one else, (love) can fix your problems it helps to have loving relationships, but it is dangerous to assume, a boy/girl can fix all your problems. I look forward to reading a story that accurately represents mental illness and trauma. Perhaps, my daughter and I can write it! ;-)
It's not the worst case of the genre but I think it's important to remind people that a relationship isn't the solution to everything! You might need to :)
That's why I was excited to read them... but I didn't end up loving them sadly! Not that they were "absolutely horrible" (most disappointing books of the year doesn't mean that for me!), they just weren't for me :S
Especially with horror books, I find that leaving stuff to the imagination helps, not hinders, a story's creep factor. Because as what people say, what we imagine is definitely worse than what we actually see. It may be lazy writing sure, but writers should treat the readers as intelligent, right? Anyways, really enjoying your videos. I just thought I'd like to join in on the discussion 😊
I agree there isn't enough recognition for other books other than YA. I love other books such as new adult books and adult books, it just makes me sad because adult books don't have cute covers like YA books do & im a pretty cover junkie. 😅
I definitely agree with you on a lot of your points. I hate the trope that love heals all. It is annoying to constantly read about it because it isn't realistic and it's not at all healthy.
Molly Grosvenor The fact is i did like two things in the book, 1-the beginning of the desease and 2-the post apocaliptic set, but the characters where meh and the plot wasnt good, i think that the film is gonna be so much better
The Book Walker The way the beginning of the epidemic was wrote was really good i thought, but I feel like the end was very lack-luster, they're seemed to be a build up with no climax
UGH IKR Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows wrapped up the series. It wrapped up all 7 books, it gave us closure. "All was well" you here that ? All was well. Why did they have to open up the series again. Why? To know that all was well, gave me closure for the series, it made me feel warm and safe? And just calm, to know that Harry, Ron, and Hermione's life weren't shit anymore. Why did they have to make Harry Potter and the Cursed Child?
I've wanted to read Ocean at the End of the Lane for a while. All the reviews I've seen are great! Good to hear your opinion. I also hate the "guy changes girl's life" troupe, that's too overrated especially in the present day.
My most disappointing books were Fangirl, The Sun Is Also A Star (I actually did like Everything Everything though, which was kind of strange for me, since, in essence, they were very similar). Also, every John Green Book I read (besides TFIOS - read that two years ago and despised it. After trying my fourth JG, I realized he wasn't for me). Oh, and Clockwork Angel/Clockwork Prince. It's kind of sad to hear all these people raving about books I hated. I always feel like I missed something...
I've read two books of Neil Gaiman (American Gods & Neverwhere) and I felt totally the same- I had high expectations from them (both have really interesting and cool premise), but they just didn't work for me. Idk, I just never got really connected to his writing and characters and just ended dragging myself through the books (although I really look forward to the upcoming tv-series American Gods). Though I got the illustrated edition for Neverwhere so at least it looks really pretty on my book shelf.
LifewithEmilyFox Well I've heard a lot of praise for "Good Omens" (an angel and a demon misplaces the antichrist- I mean how great doesn't that sound?). But "Neverwhere" is good, just that is wasn't for me, so maybe you'll like it!x
Emily, I think you are just so beautiful! And I just love you to death, you’re the only youtuber that I watch! we have the exact same preferences. Every book on your shelves I’ve read or is on my TBR. You’re literally the only book tuber I’ve been able to find who matches my style so closely & who mixes both YA & adult fic. Also, love your accent and hearing you say things in French! Btw-it’s usually pronounced uh-nye-uh-lay-shun. (Annihilation) I’m not trying to be a brat, but I know I like knowing when I’m saying something differently than most! Also. I completely agree with you about every book on this list. The only one I didn’t read is the Sophie Kinsella one, but I especially agree about the Gaiman and Vandermeer! I have now read 3 of Gaiman’s books tho and have found that I just don’t like him, but I still feel compelled to try Good Omen’s &/or American Gods. Also, I sorta hated Annihilation! I thought it was sorta on the creepy side but not in a good way! I can see how some people might like it tho.
Dumplin by Julie Murphy.I was hyped about the book when I read the synopsis and I thought I could relate myself to the main character. I thought the character could motivate me in some ways. Turns out the character annoyed me so much and the character demotivated me even more. and I just hate the plot because I don't think the story line is realistic. It took me forever to finish reading it and I'm not even happy when I finished it.
Yay!! haha These videos get so much hate but I think it's important to also share the books that didn't work out for us as long as we explain why! People take it too personally, it's the same when I do this on my makeup channel :P
I have the same issue with Neil Gaiman. I read Coraline, The Ocean at the End of the Lane, The Graveyard Book, but none of them was as good as I imagined. The Graveyard Book was the only "okay" of them. My Most Disappointing Books of this year: - Jojo Moyes: Me Before You - Marie Rutkoski: The Winner's Curse - Sophie Kinsella: Can You Keep a Secret - Jasmine Warga: My Heart and Other Black Holes - Anthony Doerr: All the Light We Cannot See (for me it was too long and boring, but the writting was excellent I can admit)
Nice video! I feel the same way as you do about love stories, a cute boy coming in and changing everything. The storyline seems very predictable, unrealistic and little unhealthy to me. Hence, i avoid reading it.
I did not like the Ocean at the End of the Lane as well. I have not given up on the author. I have heard that his other books are definitely better and more character driven.
I didn't like Fangirl either, it was definitely one of the books that disappointed me last year. This year I was disappointed by Chew Vol. 1, Where things come back, The absolutely true diary of a part time Indian, and The knife of never letting go.
LifewithEmilyFox It was so hyped that I was expecting to be blown away as I was with A monster calls and The rest of us just live here, but it was sooooooo unrealistic, lots of tropes I don't enjoy. I think that the plot twist was really cheap and unnecessary. Im going to continue with the series tho. I would say give it a try, hahaha, but it is definitely up to you, it's very dystopian-ish in my opinion.
Thank you. 😄
That's my problem! It's so unhealthy to constantly send that message to young girls (and boys!)
As someone who suffers with severe anxiety and mild depression i agree with you life’s not like that and for it to always be someone else to save them like why can’t or be a best friend maybe or a family member if they’re going to make it about that
I completely agree I'm really not a fan of a storyline consisting of just cute person coming into a person's life and changes it
I followed your beauty channel first so I was super happy to find you're in booktube too! But what's best about your channel is that you're not as IN LOVE with YA as literally almost the rest of booktube. I've read quite a few book recommendations by them and I get so frustrated because some of them are so overhyped. Maybe it's an age thing. Keep doing your thang!
kikirockslikecrazy life between words and mollie reads are two other booktubers that review/read more genres and keep it pretty diverse :)
thanks! i'll definitely check them out :D
kikirockslikecrazy What's YA ? I'm new 😊
Sofia Mon YA is young adult books
kikirockslikecrazy So is it kind of cheezy, not too ambition/teen-ish books ?
Yes, don't even attempt.
I haven't read a Neil Gaiman book yet but American Gods will definitely be the first one since so many people like it!
I did really like Fangirl, but I agree that the FanFiction/Simon Snow parts were boring
Marquee Moon yes ! I skipped all of the pages on the fan fiction, I found it extremely unnecessary
Marquee Moon Same here! They were really boring (but that doesn't mean I didn't like carry on, when it's it's own story it's actually alright)
oh my god!! I thought I was the only one who didn't enjoy Fangirl as much as probably the whole world! Great video :)
It's always nice to see there's others that feel the same! :)
Meenal I know!! I didn't like it either
Same here I'm so glad to see that other people felt the same way about it! I thought I was weird for not liking it!
another booktuber didn't like it either.
Honestly Fangirl is really overhyped, It was so boring and I found myself constantly skipping pages :/
I haven't read Finding Audrey, but TRUST ME when I say that Sophie Kinsella's adult stand alone (because I haven't started the Shopaholic series yet) are SO GOOD. So funny, awkward, lovable. I highly highly recommend them.
Good to know! :)
LifewithEmilyFox She's actually one of the authors that I trust the most to deliver an incredible story. I suggest either starting with Can You Keep A Secret or I've Got Your Number. They're all heavy in secondhand embarrassment. She's great.
Tara Taillon I am in une middle of Finding Audrey and I really like it so far.
yes, they are very uplifting.
Let me know how it goes for you! :)
I liked Fangirl but would have preferred a different narrater as Cath was like, kinda dull in a way, not my fave by any means.
The fact that HP&TCC is Goodreads-official the 8th book infuriates me.
I will say that I watched it a second time and it was kind of slow BUT I feel like it had to be to set up the next four movies, so I'm still optimistic and Newt was so adorable and cute.
agreed with every word!
Creating&Co I bought the Cursed Child in the summer and I still haven't finished it, even though I normally finish a book in a few days. I absolutely hate it. I've tried to bring myself to finish it, but I just can't. It feels like reading a 10-year-old's fanfiction.
Agreed! I'm excited for the next movies :D
Exactly! It's so bad. I refuse to ever finish it
i didn't like everything everything either.
Camila Go Right! It was so cliche and boring. There's so many better books on Wattpad!
It isn't the most popular opinion on book tube but there's a few of us haha
Guess I'm getting old! lol
Beshemoth Clockwork Prince and Princess are much better! I was a bit dissapointed too but it gets better!
I'm definitely planning on reading that one! Happy New Year :)
I HATED everything everything too! Glad I'm not the only one!
Booktube can definitely make you feel alone when we don't like a YA book haha
Haven't read the book but heard a lot of great things about it. x
Ella Strandberg it is brilliant, had me in tears. I haven't actually heard of the book, but I'll put it on my wishlist!
Your jumper is so fluffy, I could hug it
Totally agree on storyline where literally the solution is only relying on someone else's love or attention...
I didnt know you have books related channel!! So glad that its appeared in my home. Subscribed!
Yay :D
loved hearing your thoughts on these and I completely agree, I hate that whole 'saviour' trope in romance. I'd love to hear some of your all time favourite adult fiction books. All time favourite sci fi books as well :)
YOUR ACCENT IS SO CUTE
I really liked Fangirl, but I've skipped almost all fanfiction part. And then, when Carry On come out, I bought it and read it and like it a lot. Where's the logic here? :D
I read Annihilation when you talked about it back in October and wow, that book was just confusing. It was definitely suspenseful but I had a hard time with the authors descriptions. He tried to paint a vivid picture in your mind but gave you too much information that left you confused about what you had just read. And the ending was super weird! I'm still not even sure that I understood half of the book!
There's apparently a movie coming out (someone else commented that!) and if so, I'm curious to see how it will be. The book was so confusing... :S
That book is just so strange! I kinda want someone telling what happens next just so I can let it go lol
Fantastic Beasts was bad too. Just saying.
I totally agree with HP & the cursed child! I totally felt like I'm reading a fanfic. Btw, may I know what lipstick are u wearing in this video? I love how it works with you.
Thank you! It's one of the new Maybelline Creamy Matte lipsticks that are coming out this month - 565 Almond Rose :)
I have read the Annihilation book and I really liked it. For me it was the weirdest book of 2016. Those open ends and mysteries scared me a lot more than other books.
Have you read something from Jodi Picoult? I suggest you to read a Storyteller by her.
I think I just realized I get too attached to books as I swear I felt physical pain when you talked about cursed child and fangirl
Try Carry On by Rainbow Rowell. I absolutely loved it.
Her second book 'The Sun is also a Star' sounds better
Kristin H Bergenstein I enjoyed that one much more than Everything Everything!
ah, I didn't like the Cursed Child either. Such a shame :(
At least Fantastic Beasts made things better before the end of the year :)
Have you read the passage by Cronin @lifewithemilyfox ?
I liked Fangirl a lot because I used to be like Cath when I was 15 y/o, the actual plot if very simple and unoriginal but the memories it gave me... anyway, hope 2017 is full of good reads! :)
I loved Finding Audrey and Fangirl but I can understand where you are coming from.
Have you tried landline? I really enjoyed that story.
Em! I love your videos so much
Aw thank you! Happy New Year!!
Thank you! I have a main channel which helps a lot :)
But forcing yourself to finish a book is not fun... I forced myself finishing Magnus Bane Chronicles...it was really bad...
When it comes to Rainbow Rowell Attachments and Landline are her best books and people rarely mention them 🙁 it's all about Fangirl and Eleanor & Park
I felt the same way about the fanfiction in Fangirl: I loved the main story but I just started skipping the fanfiction parts after a while!
Hi!, i love reading books like you, i would like to recommend you The Time Master trilogy from Louise Cooper, Hyperion from Dan Simmons and Foundation from I. Asimov.
i like this channel, good job !
greetings from Spain!
Thank you! I had 2 of them on my TBR but I'll add the other one :D
i've never read any harry potters but it's one of my ny resolutions to read the whole series. Do i need to read fantastic beasts before the first harry potter book?
mol lee no. It's not needed for the main series. It gives what Pottermore does, Additional information.
I would recommend reading it after! You're in for quite a ride! I wish I was ready them for the first time :)
I didn't love Fangirl as well, the only thing I could save from it was the Simon and Baz's parts. I loved Carry On though
I'm exactly the same when it comes to YA contemporaries 😅
I really want to love them but most of the time I find them problematic :(
The other ones make it worth it though haha
I KNOW I'M SUPER LATE TO THIS VIDEO BUT OH GOD FINALLY SOMEONE WHO DIDN'T LIKE "EVERYTHING EVERYTHING" EITHER AND FOR THE SAME REASON AS ME!!! Honestly, the whole "girl's life is terrible - girl meets cute boy - girl's life changes because of boy and is suddenly great" is my most hated trope ever bc it's so harmful! A great video
Where did you get your book shelves? I love them! :)
IKEA!
can you make a video on the YA books that you liked? I don't like the usual YA romance too.
Although I'm not much of a contemporary lover, I guess I can kind of connect with them) ( I also realize that not every high school relationship works out the way mine has)
To be honest it sounds like you're the exception not the rule :)
There's a reason people that aren't in a stable place will be recommended to avoid relationships (think AA that have to wait 12 months) simply because they're in a fragile state.
I think I will skip Carry On.
hi sorry to bother but,
why is embedding disabled by request?
I wanted to cite this video.
With the Cursed Child, it wasn't bad but it wasn't written by J.K.Rowling.
Surprised Everything Everything and FanGirl are on your list! So many people adore them!
Am I the only person here who didn't know Em also had a book channel in addition to her makeup channel? Mind. Blown. In love.
You're not alone haha I mentioned it a few times but it's pretty recent!
I definitely agree with you on a lot of your points. I hate the trope that love heals all. It is annoying to constantly read about it because it isn't realistic and it's not at all healthy.
Agreed!
Yes, I do.
Two books that disapointed me was Station Eleven and the Unbecoming of Mara Dyer
The Book Walker why did station eleven disappoint you?
Molly Grosvenor The fact is i did like two things in the book, 1-the beginning of the desease and 2-the post apocaliptic set, but the characters where meh and the plot wasnt good, i think that the film is gonna be so much better
The Book Walker The way the beginning of the epidemic was wrote was really good i thought, but I feel like the end was very lack-luster, they're seemed to be a build up with no climax
UGH IKR
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows wrapped up the series.
Annihilation was so weird, i only kept reading to see if there were answers, I only really like the chapters about her normal biologist life!
I've wanted to read Ocean at the End of the Lane for a while. All the reviews I've seen are great! Good to hear your opinion. I also hate the "guy changes girl's life" troupe, that's too overrated especially in the present day.
I Absolutely hated Everything Everything... -_- totally agree with what you said about the book...
I'm planning on trying 1-2 more books for him... hope I'll like them more :S
I loved Fangirl but I tried reading Eleanor and Park and hated it. I did not finish it.
I feel like that shouldn't be your first Neil Gaiman book. Neverwhere or American Gods are great, I hope you give them a chance! :)
And Good Omens!
Janina Montoya YES. Completely agree! Please read Anansi Boys/American Gods!
Planning on reading Good Omens next!
American gods it's a big flop for me, I like the TV show but the book was horrible, so slow paced and disappointing
I hated Fangirl so much. High five!
Opening sentence = LOVE!!! You're amazing Emily. Lololol
Yay!! haha These videos get so much hate but I think it's important to also share the books that didn't work out for us as long as we explain why!
My Most Disappointing Books of this year:
- Jojo Moyes: Me Before You
- Marie Rutkoski: The Winner's Curse
- Sophie Kinsella: Can You Keep a Secret
- Jasmine Warga: My Heart and Other Black Holes
- Anthony Doerr: All the Light We Cannot See (for me it was too long and boring, but the writting was excellent I can admit)
I didn't want to read Me Before You... I saw the movie and I was just pissed not sad haha
Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them was amazing!! I love Newtttt
Nice video!
I feel the same way as you do about love stories, a cute boy coming in and changing everything. The storyline seems very predictable, unrealistic and little unhealthy to me. Hence, i avoid reading it.
The intro was the best! 👍
I wasn't sure if I was going to keep it haha but it's kinda true :P
I totally agree with you about everything everything! I'm so glad some one agrees with me.
We're not the majority but there's definitely quite a few of us!
I did not like the Ocean at the End of the Lane as well. I have not given up on the author. I have heard that his other books are definitely better and more character driven.
I'm definitely planning on trying 1-2 more and I'm hoping for the best!
I didn't like Fangirl either, it was definitely one of the books that disappointed me last year. This year I was disappointed by Chew Vol. 1, Where things come back, The absolutely true diary of a part time Indian, and The knife of never letting go.
Oh no I wanted to read the life of never letting go! haha Why didn't you like it?
LifewithEmilyFox It was so hyped that I was expecting to be blown away as I was with A monster calls and The rest of us just live here, but it was sooooooo unrealistic, lots of tropes I don't enjoy. I think that the plot twist was really cheap and unnecessary. Im going to continue with the series tho. I would say give it a try, hahaha, but it is definitely up to you, it's very dystopian-ish in my opinion.
