The bummer is that they didn’t do that with the RIP lineup. Because I’m really wondering if Dave could’ve played and sang “Poison was the cure” correctly back then during his prime. Nowadays, he plays a simpler version of the verse riff.
@@elosoguapo8137 in the little amount of footage available (on TH-cam) of the RIP tour in the 90’s, I’ve only noticed “Holy Wars”, “Hangar 18”, “Take No Prisoners” and “Tornado of Souls”.
When Megadeth recorded RIP, Guns n Roses was recording in the studio down the hall, and Slash kept swinging by and bringing clips to the band, going 'you guys are not going to believe what they are doing over there!'. One listen and this became my favorite album. 25 years later, it remains one of my favorites. It never gets old. I still love playing along with all these songs on guitar. It's an absolute masterpiece that will endure for eternity. Probably the single best lead guitar showcase of all time between Marty and Dave (who deserves way more credit than he gets as a lead guitarist). Can't say enough about the greatness of RIP.
I met Nick at a signing back in the early 90's in Australia (very briefly) he was awesome. The whole band was great, particularly Marty, he was extra nice.
It's an example of Mustaine's dark humor. If the word ended due to nuclear war, thats also another reason why the warheads would rust away - they'd be no survivors left around to set the other missles off...
The UGM-27 Polaris was a submarine-launched nuclear ballistic missile (SLBM) used by the US & UK navies between 1961 and 1996. It was the first American SLBM, and carried 3 reentry vehicles (bombs) of 200 kilotons yield each. That's what Dave is talking about.
@MisterFuzzyGuy 😱😱 I noticed that quite a few classic tunes they reacted to years ago were not liked. If they were to have done them today, they'd most likely be more open to them. Not every song but more than a few. They have years of listening and experience now, which would probably translate into a greater appreciation for some of the songs they didn't care for 3,4 or 5 years ago.
Rust in Peace Polaris is the epilogue of this masterpiece. Is Mustaine and the band doing the heaviest song (lyrically and musically) of the record to give us a last shot of what the world could actually look like if a nuclear war happens and talking in the perspective of the missile. For me, everytime I see in the news some nuclear test from some country, this song comes to mind. It's totally dark and heavy. Dave on a genius songwriting level on this one. And yes, they've played this live. A lot of times.
A lot of people refer to Megadeth as "technical" like that's the main thing that someone would listen to them for. I'm a massive Megadeth fan and I tell you I don't give a fck about the fact that something is technical or not, I love Megadeth for their super nasty riffage, jazzy-swing-fast grooves, adrenaline pumping drums and beautiful melodies.
Yeah, that always bugged me too... technically proficient playing is great, but you need a good song composition to back it up, and Megadeth shines in that regard!
I love Megadeth too! My favorite band. I think why technical is thrown in all the time is because they simply are just the best technically sound and intricate out the most well known metal bands. They are so tight too. All of the big 4 thrash metal bands have awesome riffage but none of them could even touch this album. RIP is simply the best thrash metal album of all time.
@@StewMain6 it's a type of music that some people need more listens to digest. Like Ryan and George said, a lot of stuff happens in a Megadeth song and might be pretty overwhelming at a first listen, but if you give it time the reward is incredible.
@@blackmamba5659 totally agree. Megadeth slowly became my favorite band as I began to appreciate all that they do. As an early metal head, much of their stuff was too much for me to handle but the more I listened, the more I realized they were just at another level.
The UGM-27 Polaris was a nuclear missile system used on U.S. submarines from the 1960s and 1970s. What's funny (or maybe "interesting" is a more accurate word than "funny") is that when the album came out (in 1990), the Polaris missile had been retired for 10 years (U.S. submarines have carried variants of the Trident missile system since 1979). This song is a great example of how many thrash musicians in the United States, like their punk counterparts in the United Kingdom in the 1970s, were heavily influenced by the Cold War doomsday that hung over their heads as kids and teenagers.
And this was Nick Menza’s first album behind the kit. He was a roadie up until this point. Marty walked in off the street and laid down some crazy stuff. A little note - Dave and Dave had most of this written before Nick and Marty came in and gave it their touches. Chris Poland - the original guitar player - played a lot of the solos in pre-production. All that said, easily the original release is probably one of the top 5 greatest metal albums ever. Master of Puppets, South of Heaven, Black Sabbath, Rust in Peace, and add another record of your liking. And Rust in Peace is probably the technically proficient. Bye the way, they can definitely do this live. They could do it then and can still do it now. Absolutely badass record!!!

You guys talk about songs that have more of a groove feel by them. Addicted to Chaos and Of Mice and Men have that and they both tell very personal stories.
Polaris was a missile system, the first ballistic missile launched from a sub. The payload could be a 1 megaton warhead, the other was 3, 200 kiloton warheads. 1 megaton is equivalent to 1 million tons of TNT, the Hiroshima bomb was equal to about 15 tons of TNT. (edit) it;s actually 15 thousand tons
I saw Megadeth on this tour. They sounded just like the album live. I stood in front of Marty as he hit every note of the Tornado Of Souls solo. Masters of their trade.
In 2010 I saw Megadeth play this Rust in Peace live from start to finish to celebrate the 20th anniversary. So yes, they can do it live and it was amazing!
I was 16 when this album came out and there was nothing like it. I remember spending that winter walking around with my yellow Walkman blasting this non stop along with Metallica’s AJFA, and State of Euphoria by Anthrax. What a great time for metal music.
im glad you're going back to some metal. i remember you started long ago maybe 2017 or 2018 im glad you got bigger and have a solid channel. you deserve it
I was in the Army when this came out. When the video dropped on Headbangers Ball, the Enlisted club music shut off and the video was pumped through the feed. Infantry soldiers rejoiced and merrily drank.
Polaris was the previous generation of Submarine-launched Inter-Continental Ballistic Missiles used by the USA and UK. Polaris was often in the news when I was growing up with debates about whether to upgrade or replace them at vast expense, or do unilateral nuclear disarmament which was the peace cause in the UK promoted by CND, the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. They were replaced with the Trident Sub-launched ICBMs, which allows multiple independently targeted re-entry vehicle (MIRV) payloads, which also required the UK to invest in a new generation of nuclear missile submarines. They depend on the US satellite network for GPS targeting, so in fact the UK's "Independent Nuclear Deterrent" has to ask for US permission to be re-targeted or used, so there's no independence about it at all.
Glad you guys mostly enjoyed this. My favorite Megadeth album. Now if only you could give some love to Tool’s first album, Undertow. It’s not as prog as their later albums but it’s still great.
You hit the nail on the head, there will never be another album like this again, it was dam near perfection for this genre of Music at the time and still blows most things away to this day.
appreciate you guys......love you guys🤘 I remember when you stumbled on holy wars and realized the metal community was here to take this ride with you. Metallica, tool, and Megadeth hopefully got . love the way you guys put a bow on it
Now you known why Dawn Patrol is the intro, not the outro ! Polaris destroys EVERYTHING. It's freaking shred fest, and so groovy, perfect ending of an incredible album (maybe give it a listen start to finish on your own time, you'll appreciate it even more, i think). Please, can you finish Fear Inoculum ? There's a couple song missing if i recall that are insane (Descending & Culling Voices). edit : Megadeth did a tour for the Nth anniversary of this album, playing it live back to back, so yeah... Megadeth live would blow your mind !
Not only is the this album a masterpiece musically, but the content of the lyrics is soooo important. I'm glad I rode my bike down to the music shop and bought this at 15 yo.
First Megadeth album.. Looking Down the Cross. Bit raw mixing, but damn, the dynamics of this song.. You'll have a field day with the changes and progressions.. AND the um.. lightness of gain in the guitars but still heavy as hell.
yup, everybody is complaining about the mix in this album, but i like it, there's a raw feeling to it that i really love. Sometimes (emphasis on "sometimes"), i feel we lose something when the mix and mastering are "too clean". To me, what you can hear on this album is the raw energy of youth. I can't even listen to the remastered version, it doesn't sound better to me.
I almost got crushed to death in a pit at Ozzfest 98 when Megadeth came out. I was right at the barrier in front of the stage and as the intro played I could feel the crowd squeezing together and I looked at my friend and said. "Oh shit" because I knew we were in trouble. As SOON AS the riff for Holy Wars started, the crowd erupted and slammed us into the barrier. We had to fight our way out and didn't find each other until about an hour later. A valuable lesson was learned that day.
I saw them live for the first time a couple years back w/ Hatebreed, Trivium, & Lamb of God. While Dave can't hit the vocal highs like he used to, the band still kicked ass. Their current drummer, Dirk, is a monster and truly a joy to watch. Check out his Drumeo vids. 🤘
Thank you guys for finishing out another classic album. I watched testament open up for Megadeth and Slayer where they played RIP and Seasons all the way through. F***ing rocked. Do more off Seasons in the abyss by Slayer.
Thank you for making the Eminem comparison! It’s these connections that I would not otherwise ever think of that I appreciate the most. I get the technical mastery you are alluding to. Thank you!
Dave played this song just a couple of times that I can remember. For the anniversary of the album, in Brazil and somewhere else. The first one I think his voice wasn't that messed up. But at least he could perform this fantastic piece live despite the bunch of notes and synchronization with the lyrical part. There are a lot of songs that Megadeth just performed in the first shows after the release of an album to promote it, but that's it. Like Looking down the cross, Last rites / Loved to death or Good mourning / Black friday
Easily my favorite Megadeth album. Very technical and good from start to finish. Other megadeth songs to consider in the future: Good morning/Black Friday, hook in mouth, ashes in your mouth, train of consequences. Thanks for this. Nice to see reactions when hearing this for the first time, even if you don’t like all of it.
Polaris is the name of the north star, but also the name of the UGM-27 Polaris Missile. It was a nuclear-equipped submarine-launched missile we used up until the late 80's.
While not on the original album, I always loved the song My Creation that was added to their remastered version of the album in 2004 I think. It’s kind of an interlude song like Dawn Patrol.
You have to do some Annihilator! MEGADETH's David Ellefson (and Nick Menza) stated that: "The Rust In Peace lineup would crank up the ALICE IN HELL cassette everyday, to and from our writing and recording sessions for (their classic) the Rust In Peace record."
Saw Megadeth live for the first time in 2017, they opened for Scorpions. I was blown away how good they are live. They sound like the albums, crazy good musicianship. Mustaine has to be one of the top frontmen in all of music. To carry on the lyrics of the song while playing such intricate, complex guitar is truly impressive.
I totally respect how you acknowledge the technical proficiency of Megadeth's musicianship while acknowledging most of their stuff isn't up your alley. I would love to hear your take on some of their more radio friendly offerings.
"Can Megadeth do this live?" Yes. I went to a concert and Megadeth played the entire Rust in Peace album. They were fantastic.

I saw Megadeth on this tour and they killed it!!
Dave is a genius for sure. From writing the music to all the lyrics he's virtually untouched in the genre. Amazing musician. Incredible lyricist.
Hiroshima was equal to 15k tons of TNT (or 15 kilotons).
@@vincentfalcone9218Oops, ya, you are 100% correct, my mistake, I know this.
And not to mention dave singing the entire time while he’s shredding faces
Five magics, lucretia, holy wars, and hangar 18 are my favorites from this album
Should definitely do more Bolt Thrower. One of the most unique sounds ever.
they should react to Embers
I was 16 when this album came out and there was nothing like it. I remember spending that winter walking around with my yellow Walkman blasting this non stop along with Metallica’s AJFA, and State of Euphoria by Anthrax. What a great time for metal music.
im glad you're going back to some metal. i remember you started long ago maybe 2017 or 2018 im glad you got bigger and have a solid channel. you deserve it
My favourite song of the album. Still makes me bang my head today.
A fitting climax to a masterpiece album. Showcasing the pinnacle of thrash musicianship while laying down insightful lyrics.
I was in the Army when this came out. When the video dropped on Headbangers Ball, the Enlisted club music shut off and the video was pumped through the feed. Infantry soldiers rejoiced and merrily drank.
I saw this tour as an 18 year old in a 1500 seat venue in OKC. They really could play this material live, even faster.
Aaah
I miss playing this song on the bass…
Dawn Patrol was a must to learn
They play it live like the album.. incredible artists.
13:58: "Jesus!"
Exactly what I've been muttering to myself every single time I've listened to this masterpiece since it was released in 1990.
I don't listen to these 2 often, but I'm glad they're on the album. It's a cool combo to end an epic album on.
appreciate you guys......love you guys🤘 I remember when you stumbled on holy wars and realized the metal community was here to take this ride with you.
🎶Killing Floor🎶 Slash & Brian Johnson & Steven Tyler (New 2024 Song)
another great one to finish up: Metal Church - Metal Church :)
Finish And Justice for All
Dawn Patrol a nice segue into Rust in Peace ( notice drum intro). That whole time late 80s, early 90s, nuclear threat.
I think I've read somewhere that the inspiration for dawn patrol was the traffic in LA in the early morning.
Yeah, they've done several tours where they did this album night in, night out.
Rust in Peace Polaris was the song I liked least off the album when I first heard it... and then three days later it got stuck in my head hard 😅
I will never forget getting to see them play this whole album front to back. Craziest pit I’ve ever been in.
Yes, they can do this live. You should do a video on Megadeth live in Italy 1992. The quality is surprisingly really good.
The production is insane. Amazing sounding album. So much energy which is amazing considering how technical the album Is
They play this record live Ryan and George. @ the Hollywood Palladium in 1080P all 9 tracks
I would love for you guys to watch Megadeth live with Marty. I think it’d be cool to see your reaction as they play.
Also Blizzard of Oz and Diary of a Madman from Ozzy
Thank you guys for finishing out another classic album.
I watched testament open up for Megadeth and Slayer where they played RIP and Seasons all the way through. F***ing rocked.
Do more off Seasons in the abyss by Slayer.
Thank you for making the Eminem comparison! It’s these connections that I would not otherwise ever think of that I appreciate the most. I get the technical mastery you are alluding to. Thank you!
Such a creepy and dark song.Always have goose bumps while listening that first part.
Kick the Chair by Megadeth (live) is a lesson of syncopation. Plus the singing on top of that is extraordinary.
This album is a masterpiece. In the shows they play just like in the album and they nail it every time.
You ask “can they do this live”? Yes they can. Over and over again.
It's not always about the groove-- sometimes it's about the vibe.
Thanks for the reactions, guys. Next Megadeth album Countdown to Extinction.
Polaris is the name of the north star, but also the name of the UGM-27 Polaris Missile. It was a nuclear-equipped submarine-launched missile we used up until the late 80's.
Let's watch Polaris LIVE YEHA!!!
15:26 Even with all the line up changes in the band, Dave and his surrounding cohorts have always played at a superior level.
I still find it amazing that Dave had this riff in his mind since before 1983 when he was jamming with Metallica and remembered this 7 years later
I totally respect how you acknowledge the technical proficiency of Megadeth's musicianship while acknowledging most of their stuff isn't up your alley. I would love to hear your take on some of their more radio friendly offerings.
they do it live...at least since last concert....like 4 years ago
