Very first time Doris Day appeared on TV. I do believe that several Hollywood stars made their first TV appearance on "What's My Line", probably to ease their anxiety about the medium because it was an easy and comfortable show.
As far as the Hollywood moguls were concerned, TV was still more a foe than a friend. Moviehouses were dying like flies as folks stayed home gawping at the tube. Always found it interesting that when asking a star if they were a glamor girls vs. a serious actress was not taken as terribly insulting. They do it quite often.
It seems crazy, right? What's most curious about it, to me, is that it reflects a kind of common cultural awareness about the strata of artistic sophistication. Doris knew she was a blockbuster girl. These days, once Hollywood has their "it girl", she's thrown into everything the studio principals are pushing green lights on whether she suits the role or not.
