If you visit San Francisco nowadays, you can ride on historic or classic trolley cars that make the run from Fisherman's Wharf to the intersection of Castro and Market Streets. Of the ones that you can catch everyday, they are typically old streetcars originally in use in the city of Milan, Italy, or "PCC" streetcars from various U.S. and Canadian locales (which where manufactured from the 1930's through the 1950's). There are also some "one-off" historic cars that run occasionally -- older ones from San Francisco prior to the 1930's, one from New Orleans, an open-air streetcar that resembles a boat from Blackpool, England, and there are some others in the collection that are currently not operated. Riding any of those I find to be entertaining, because looking at the interiors while riding is highly interesting due to their age and historic qualities -- and the Milanese ones still have all the Italian signage inside (with English translations added where necessary). However, in 1954, when people rode streetcars in San Francisco or anywhere else, they were commonplace and very ordinary, not entertaining. I'm referring to streetcars a.k.a. trolley cars, powered by electric motors, mostly with the electricity taken from an overhead wire via a trolley pole. (San Francisco's cable cars are completely different and even in 1954 were ridden by tourists who found them as entertaining as they still do today. They're pulled by a moving cable beneath a slot in the street midway between the two rails of the trackway -- they're not trolleys and we never call them that, though visitors frequently make that error.)

Having watched about 200 of these things now (I think) by far the best thing about What's My Line and indeed the thing which makes it unique, alive and brilliant isn't the legendary mystery guest segment but the progressive questionning by Steve Allen, each one getting a yes yet each one digging further down the wrong rabbit hole despite having a perfectly logical reason for going there. That and the occasional pause for a slight, puzzled, comedic deadpan frown in the direction of the audience. As well as being surely funny to ANYONE with the slightest sense of humour it actually wanders into the realms of surrealism without being unreasonable or sudden about it. Quite quite brilliant! Conceptually that's the show right there! But it isn't just that of course. It may not have been quite so brilliant if it hadn't been for Allen.
True. I don't want to burst your bubble, but Steve was fed "gambits" that were designed to lead him down a rabbit hole and provoke audience laughter. They did not provide a clue as to the actual occupation. They were quietly discontinued after the quiz show scandals of the late 50s.

They're pulled by a moving cable beneath a slot in the street midway between the two rails of the trackway -- they're not trolleys and we never call them that, though visitors frequently make that error.)
The last I knew (2013) the McKinney Avenue Transit Authority in Dallas, Tx had the oldest operating streetcar in the United States, named Rosie.
Todd are you the mayor?

It's so nice to see the first contestant wearing gloves. Though I must admit the outfit worn by the final contestant is a little odd.

Can someone please explain to me why Dorothy is talking about Santa Claus? Does anyone know what she was driving at?

No wonder they decided to have each panelist only ask a celebrity guest one question at a time.

It is so nice to see the respect seniors get on this show. To bad it doesnt exist now in our society

When Dorothy said that Margaret Truman would replace her for two weeks, while she was in Europe, you could hear some buzz from the audience. Couldn't tell if it was positive or negative though. I like Margaret Truman but I can understand if others don't.

John had been to Honolulu. This was five years before Hawaii became the 50th state of the USA 1959.

i am going to assume that Dorothy was referring to Eartha Kitt's song "Santa Baby:" according to wikipedia, "Santa Baby" was originally recorded by Eartha Kitt with Henri René and his orchestra in New York City, in July 1953." you can find it here on you tube if you haven't heard it, but as it continued to be played annually through Christmas 2014 and likely beyond, most of us probably know the song very well.

I, again, love the history we see behind the show. Thank you for putting these up!

for the first guest, i think Arlene extended her hand to shake, and when the guest didn't shake hands with Arlene, Arlene shook her own hand and chuckled!

The best CatWoman. ggggrrrrrrrrrrr......
i know but that's how most women dressed back then
There is no way Earth Kitt could have ever fooled them. People with such distinctive voices rarely can.
Eartha was a class act
interesting that there wasn't any wolf whistling when Eartha Kitt signed in....
They never whistled at any black woman. Not Lena Horne or Diane Carroll.
@@kgalford WOW! Not even Lena? Thats just crazy!
No that's 70 years ago when respect was #1😊
I wonder if any episodes of Steve Allen's New York local pre-Tonight Show survive.
At least one episode of the Knickerbocker Beer show has been in circulation.
I love Eartha. She was such a nice person.
Dorothy laughs when Arlene asks if it's a barbiturate...
How much times have changed!
Regrettably not so funny for her in 1965
in the 50s, a number of contestants showed up associated in some ways with the concept of statehood for Hawaii or Alaska. Puerto Rico? No such luck.
soulierinvestments why you brought up the topic? BTW, Puerto Rico will never be a state, USA 🇺🇸 has more benefit by keeping it a colony...
Lmao She didn't wanted to speak, she knew Her voice is so Unique and Easy to recognize
Lol, yeah, she knew it!
She was the latest diva, so atypical, incredible woman who loved men, so what ?
Such a voice, such a body !
A genius, a great person, so exotic, with sweet madness like we don't do anymore, she was all that we needed.
🌹Our black panther.
😍 Beloved Queen 😍
Eartha should have answered the question affirmatively at 9:45.
Her handwriting was much plainer than five years later on this show.

Eartha is a true Earthling!
Ever notice how John Daly seems to have more conferences when the contestant is pretty? 😄Lol
Arlene was the highest paid panelist at $1000 a week, when the median wage was $3600 a year
it was the first mmhmm that gave it away - she giggled like a-ha!
Not sure why Ms. Kitt and John Daly got stumped by the "Santa Claus" question, though.
The song title was Santa baby😊
Eartha Kitt was on Nixon's enemies list! I think that I read of her being proud of it if my memory is not failing me...I think it was her...
Not too many people were enemies of both Nixon and LBJ
Dorothy should have been in intelligence. She could figure anything out.
Dorothy was a investigative reporter for years 😊
DRIVES TROLLEY CAR
MAKES SEASICK REMEDY
OWNS AND OPERATES BAR
Glad to see Chris back again. I keep having to check back to remember what the line was.
It seems that Mr. Daly enjoys huddling with Mrs. Cutillo!😍🤪
Loved me some Eartha she was beautiful inside and out
*Hawaii was doing just fine 😒
17:30 for Ms Kitt...otherwise wasted my time
I LIKE THE INTRODUCTION
17:38 - what you came for
You're welcome. ...Peace...
Its really interesting that Hawaii still isn't a state of the US at that time. It was a country in its own right then.
A stranger in their own land
It was a US territory at the time.
Amusing to hear "it's just like Cohn & McCarthy over there" when John is conferencing with the first contestant. Political life shows up here occasionally.
my grandma was born a month after this
Fascinating.
My grandma was born 20 years before this.
nya heart my dad was born July 27, 1954.
You've got a young grandma.
You must be real young.
Eartha kitt is so pretty you can tell she was in her 20s
Did anyone notice at 19:01 how she checked her ears and then said she was getting a “message” ? She was definitely tapping into spirit.

i wonder if the panel ever got it right on their "free guesses"?
genius mchaggis A few times!
Gary has put together a video compilation of all correct free guesses from the extant shows: th-cam.com/video/pbj0uNMfoNI/w-d-xo.html
9 guesses were correct, after that they did away with asking this question 😊
I only watched this episode just to see Miss Earth Kitt.
