The reason why that copy of rocket league sold so high is the original collectors edition came with a code for an in game item that was removed from the item store. The only way to get it now is with that code.
I was at a half price bookstore today and saw Mario Kart Double Dash being sold for 150 usd. Obviously that was outrageously priced, but this kind of stuff only happens because of the general inflation of retro games. So incredibly stupid
Shopping second hand has been totally ruined since the internet. They always feel like they can charge anything for stuff they know nothing about just by checking eBay prices. I can hardly ever find great deals anymore.
GameCube sold better than they let on. Me and everyone I knew had one and we all had the best games on it. There's no excuse to charge over a hundred bucks for any mainline Nintendo GameCube game that every GameCube owner had. But the resellers know those are the games that buyers will go for first. That's the reason for the inflated prices. It's greed. It's not rare. IT'S GREED.

Exactly this. That's why I mostly just collect for the ps4/ps5 and switch nowadays. Between my ps5 and my switch, I have an amazing catalog of remakes and and remaster of a lot of retro titles that would be just impossible to get if I was looking at the original games.

If I'm thinking of the right game, Splinter Cell has an exploit on the disc that modders use to mod the console. I can't remember if this is the specific one but I think so. Xbox 360 has a few games like that too
You are thinking of Splinter Cell 1 (black label, platinum, any version works). Double Agent Version 2 (Xbox/PS2/GC) is a distinctly different game from Double Agent X360/PC and nobody want to play the inferior PS2/GC versions. People might finally be discovering it is the 2nd best Splinter Cell game, and the Xbox version is the only way to play it properly.

Retro games pricing have gotten pretty insane in the past few years. I had my eye on a loose GBA copy of Link to the Past + 4 Swords, and browsing ebay, some people had it listed for $80 upwards. Thankfully I managed to snag an authentic copy for $26 plus a couple bucks shipping.
The Asian or Chinese\ Hong Kong variants are unique in that they play on a Japanese console (ntsc-j), but can often play in English. This makes them desirable for people that prefer Japanese over US, but do not speak Japanese. Also a better alternative for people in pal regions
To answer the bit about Reydllom it was extremely limited run from an LRG clone with even worse CS on the communication side of things as far as orders are concerned. The game itself is a traditional asset flip from an unknown "studio", but it was also a 1,000 print run. Pretty much all the runs they do are just horror asset flips. Either way the fact that they exist is going to make it a pain in the ass for future collector's decades from now so that's what I personally presume all the recent hype is about.
What’s the worst part is these scalpers are flying all the way to Japan to buy stuff because they have bled dry the supply stock of retro games here. It’s just sick.

There's a local guy here in my town who has dozens of PEGI copies of popular games like Black Ops 1 & 2 for around $30-40. He has been sitting on them since 2020 lol.
I doubt there's very many people regularly flying to Japan just to buy inventory, but I know there are some local shops that will sell online on eBay and other marketplaces almost exclusively to Americans because USD is so valuable there right now with the Yen being as weak as it is.

I don't trust ebay...I've noticed some inconsistencies with sold items compared to for sale items. I would have something in my saved searches, and never get any newer or better deals on the item, but somehow the sold listings would show a recent great deal on the item I was looking to buy. I think ebay is using AI to show certain listings according to a buyers past purchases. I also think ebay sellers are somehow able to manipulate the sold bids to show that they sell higher than expected, and just relist the item hoping a sucker will buy it at the higher price.
Yeah... I also noticed some bs like that and ppl jumping on the hook throwing away silly money because of FOMO skyrocketing prices up. I cant believe some games x2 their price in one single year, thats BS. My best advice for your budgeds and mental health is to simplify the collection with the titles that you REALLY want and forget about others that, even if you wish them its not worth or are already very expensive, you have to make sacrifices... Try to buy other platforms that are still cheap before the prices go up, because they will end up doing it too when we least think about it. Right now im just grabbing XBOX OG,PS3,WII,Máster system AND some ps2 tittles before suc*ers skyrocket them too... I'm spending lately money at faster rate than i wish but its the best we can do before It goes mad in these systems too.

Dreamcast games prices are skyrocketing insanely in 2024 at least here in Europe... Some common tittles like crazy taxi 2 that cost arround 50€ in 2023 are now close to 100€ in 2024. Its just silly.
Even if Sega still had the source code, trust me, we don't want the PDS re-release they would produce today. Anyone that actually cares about the game should either get an ODE, play the $20 Japanese version, or emulate it. It's a very good game, a top 10 RPG for me and worth whatever hoops are necessary to jump through to play it.

Shenmue isn't rare. You can go to any retro game store and find a copy. I spent 50 bucks on it before Covid. Dreamcast games aren't rare.
