My Plant Room!

  • The number one question I receive all throughout the seasons is: how do you keep plants over the winter? The truth is, years ago, I hardly kept over any plants. I didn't want my house to be a complete jungle and mess. But slowly, I started to have more and more plants I wanted to save from year to year. I began collecting aloe, agave, and tropicals. And in Iowa, late fall and winter are just too cold for them.

So what to do? A true greenhouse would be the dream and someday I hope to have a better method with more space to keep my plants. In the meantime, I've retrofitted an old shed into my own greenhouse!
My "greenhouse" is insulated with as many windows as possible. Since the windows do not face the ideal direction, there's not enough natural light. Even the brightest indoor light will not be the same as anything outdoors. To supplement, I use high-intensity full spectrum grow lights and keep them on timers, providing 6-8 hours of light per day. Grow lights are different from indoor lighting and give plants the exact color of light needed.
The room is kept at a minimum of 60 degrees F with two radiant space heaters. On warm sunny days, it can reach 80 degrees and if needed, I open the windows to cool things down. True greenhouses can regulate humidity. Ideally, plants don't like extreme low or high humidity. I keep a humidity gauge inside and try to keep it in the 50-70% range. If drier, I supplement by spraying moisture-loving plants with water.
Houseplants and plants brought in over the winter do not need as much water as outdoor plants. They go into a slow, almost dormant state. For me, I check the plants a few times a week, making sure to let the plants dry completely before watering them. Keeping plants too wet can cause mildew and breed fungus, gnats, and whiteflies.
Established agave, agapanthus, and figs are kept dormant on the other side of this room. I keep it at 45 degrees F. With these conditions, they all go dormant and I water them at most once a month just to keep the roots hydrated.
There you have it! This is a quick picture of my process, but I hope it shows that you don't need a perfect space to keep your plants alive!

No reason to apologize for your plant space. I would LOVE to have a space like that!

Many years ago before I retired, I had an adorable greenhouse that hubby built for me. It had that earthy humid smell gardeners love. But it was high maintenance. A couple times each week we had to go purchase keresone for the heater to heat the greenhouse in winter and had to purchase big fans for warmer weather cooling until plants went back outside again. When I retired, I realized a greenhouse was way to much work!! I made the decision to over winter all those houseplants beneath my living room/ family room basement which was about six concrete blocks high off the ground. I noticed it was always so much warmer under there in the winter and had two smallish windows for light. It was used only for storage. But the plants did beautifully under there, only lightly watering once or twice a winter until time to bring out again in spring. Your setup is marvelous, light and bright and you turned that space into a way to not have to purchase new plants each year. You pat yourself on the back young man!! What you have created is a way not to be tired down to a greenhouse no matter how beautiful they are. Good for you!!!

Oh, I'm so glad I found your video! I kind of went a little crazy rescuing discount plants at my local hardware store and, here in zone 7 on our back deck theyve all done so well! But now I've started trying to figure out what I am going to do with them all after the "great migration" inside. I always thought you could never have too many plants, but I may have too many plants, lol.
And I love your philosophy "no shi-shi, it may be ugly, but baby, it works!"
We have an 'walk out' unfinished basement room that we've just been using for storage. Now I'm thinking this weekend, I'm going to clear out some space by the only window and sliding glass door and get me some grow lights with timers and a radiant oil heater!
    Thank you, thank you!!!

going dormant - when i was a pre-teen i put an aloe vera plant in the back of my closet on a shelf, there was no light or anything in it and i always kept the door shut, well ten years later when i was moving out from the family home i found that aloe vera up there in my closet and it was in the very same condition as when i put it there a decade previously.

Thanks for the tour. Do you start seeds there also? Saw this on a sign by a local greenhouse. "It's not hoarding if it's plants." Love it.

I capture rain water in barrels to use on all my house plants or even potted plants outside. Sink water just doesn't give that little nitrogen and other things in rain water that plants love. And Yes I've noticed a huge difference using the rain instead of sink water. 👍

You have a great love for your plants. And the knowledge to keep them alive. I don't have any plants. I kill them so I'm not trying anymore.

So timely, and helpful!!! Thanks, Kaleb! Doing this year for first time in new house. Any shelving suggestions? I like the green 3-tier in your smaller room and wonder if you remember where you found that. Shelving is everything to me this year. Starting from scratch! Love you, kiddo! Thanks!

Hello. I love all your plants. I have quite a few of my own. I have been looking for shelves like the green ones you have where I can keep them on different levels. If you could tell me the name of the shelves or where you purchased them I would greatly appreciate it. Thank You 🙏

I am growing citrus trees, oranges, limes, lemons and blood orange. I have mildew on them and I'm trying a spray solution of 1part listerine to 3 parts water. What are your experiences with them in the winter. Light, water etc. They are in the house and the air is very dry. And around 70 degrees. I have them in diffused sunny windows. ???
