    I think it really depends on the lifestyle that you want. I know NPs making 300k and more and they work very hard. I am a new grad psych NP and chose to take a job for 140k. In my role I will see 14 patients a day, no call no weekends. Very flexible as well. 140k is on the low end however I have 2 kids and I need to have work life balance. My husband has a great job so I don’t need to be a work horse.

      Np making 300k do they own a practice, work travel np, or 1099.

      yes one owns his own practice and the others just hustle and work 1099 for several organizations. In California it is also common to see those high payscales for psyh NP's

      I agree. I hated being a floor nurse and would never ever go back to floor nursing. I did it for 11 years and hated every minute of it. I've been an NP for 28 years and it was either that or quit nursing. I make $90/hour which is about 187,000/year and would never work in a hospital for that, plus with the pandemic winding down, RN pay is going way down. I do locums, pick and choose, take months off, and would never go back. Plus, I'm fairly independent.

    It's unfortunate because when I worked in NYC the average NP got paid $105k/yr as a starting salary. I was already making $105k/yr as an ER nurse with very little overtime so it didn't make sense for me to go to NP school, knowing that it wasn't going to make sense financially. And, now me and my wife live in Sacramento and are earning close to $200k/yr, each, with very little overtime.

    • @rjsmusicstudio4716
      @rjsmusicstudio4716 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      It’s unfortunate because of these degree mills np is becoming not worth it financially unless you own a practice, living in rural areas that in turn have a higher income potential, or doing 1099 contracts to make money as a np and not everyone wants to do that. People want to be w-2.

      @@rjsmusicstudio4716 very true. I remember when I was in NYC I used to get a lot of students that had not even gotten a job yet but we're in accelerated BSN to MSN programs. Or new grads with not even 6 months of experience in school for their NP.

      Yeah, it’s crazy to see how things have changed for sure. 200k as a NP for some specialties is living the dream but for some RNs it’s normal. What makes it worse is that Unfortunately desperate new grad NPs are accepting lower and lower salaries because they need any job and it’s worsening our case to stay competitive. Realistically speaking, If I were starting off now, I probably wouldn’t want it be an NP and just keep my RN jobs.

    I have been a nurse for 28 years, a NP for 8 years. I have worked as a nephrology NP for the last 4 years, and I am burned out! I have been looking for months for a new job, and the only (non-psych) NP jobs in my area are primary care or urgent care. I have no desire to work in those areas, and I need to make a change soon to keep my sanity intact, so I am seriously considering going back to a RN job. I could make more as a contract home health nurse in the city where I live than what I am currently making in my NP role.

    I think one of the hardest parts is that by the time you realize you're doing exactly the same job as the physician and that staff will often ask you for things are expecting the view that they don't have the Physicians, still and that you're not going to make enough money to have a glamorous lifestyle anything like a Physicians, you will already have the student loans which may be not that much less than Physicians have especially the DM piece who may be going to school for 7 years and making less than half what a position does who went to school for 8 years. And to know that there are more and more Physicians realize how lucrative it is to have a side gig as a physician collaborator in states that require it or buy starting a business where they have a team of nurse practitioners bringing in vast amounts of money for them making rounds at nursing homes or working a split work week at two different clinics while making a small sliver of the profits.

I take 3 months a year off now and have never had a contract canceled with my main company. I don't have any issues getting contracts. I feel as if I have more job security based off my flexibility. I've worked West Coast and East Coast. I drive to my contracts because I love traveling!!! Now, contracts being canceled is a possibility, so you have to budget and plan accordingly. If it is canceled get another contract. It's that's simple. As a traveler, you roll with the punches. Now, does that mean you take crap...nope. I've left 1 facility and threatened to leave another one and my company still works with me because I'm a good nurse. If I leave, it's for a good reason. I love the flexibility of traveling.

    • @FallacyAsPraxis
      @FallacyAsPraxis ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It all depends on location. In parts of south Florida where I live I see NP jobs being advertised all the time for very low salaries...as low as in the high $30s to $40s per hour, and you need to be bilingual and see up to 30 people a day. Whether you want to or not, if you're the NP who's working a gig like that you're automatically doing a lot of unpaid OT to keep up with the documentation. And If its an urgent care you will be seeing a whole lot more than just 30 people a day. I know experienced staff RNs who earn that and more if you add in shift diffs and OT. Travel and Contract RNs here can make significantly more if they're in a specialized area.
      In some states, bedside RNs who work for certain systems in parts of the state earn a whole lot more than most NPs there, even excluding OT. I know this to be a fact in California and a few other states.You are correct that many NPs went back to travel/contract nursing over the past couple years...especially during COVID. The $$$ those contracts were paying was insane! But that has mostly dried up now. I don't that those NPs stayed in the bedside RN role for long after the pay went back down. For too many it would mean a permanent return to all the stuff they went to NP school to get away from. I suspect that some of them didn't go back to the bedside at all but that they went into other areas of nursing or quit the profession and moved on to other things.

    NP vs Bedside RN comparison is very opinionated. Talked to some Travel RN's and are proud of what they are. Already at their 50's and money is just the driving factor but life seem disorganized because of state travel assignments. NP's on the other hand get to stay in their own turf and closer to family (if they have) which is a very positive result. Pay is i think probably the deciding factor however, the problem goes with the person and their relationship with money. However thanks for the video. It gave me a clearer point of view since I was told why go back to school when travel RN pays higher than NP's (if they added some extra shifts). I am almost halfway with my NP program for acute care. Thanks Bro.

    Regarding the ad for lifestyle coaches: If a licensed nurse is going to go so far as getting into lifestyle coaching here she would probably do better and make more money if they actually get into disease management coaching. Especially if you're going to charge them for eight months of training. Most of what you learned will be just practicing until you get good at it and so you could actually do well with a month of training in lifestyle coaching unless you are coming into it with no training because you are a civilian with no Health Care license. For license nurse the focus would be on learning motivational interviewing and health psychology and privacy and frankly sales because you are selling people you've never met the idea that they need to take better care of themselves and that you can give them the information and support to do so. For example after you've hung up with a patient if you are still documenting things in your computer you have the freedom to snack because you're not on camera anymore and you can't do that at the nurses station for at least three decades now, but at the nurses station when you need to stretch your legs there is always something down the hall that you need to be doing and you'll be lucky if you sit down for half an hour every shift. If that's easier for you than sitting for 8 to 10 hours and only getting up for a total of an hour per day sometimes less than Health coaching and disease management coaching maybe for you.

      I'm a new nurse on a psychiatric unit in Florida and I make about $30 an hour. I get a dollar extra for weekend pay and if I did nights I'd get an extra $5. It's not amazing, but I can pay my bills and my schedule is nice. I will say, that I've only been a nurse for 6 months and I'm already drained. Depending on the state you work in your pay could be more than mine, Florida is usually behind on that stuff anyway lol

    I guess it's their choice. At least they can, as a lot of PAs don't have that choice as they are not RNs. I don't know any RN who makes more than I do as an NP. Plus, those RN jobs... done that, don't want to do it again for any amount of money. Way more patients and stress as a bedside RN. I also don't know any NP that would or has gone back to the bedside. Can you tell me where you got your info? Thanks.

    • @FallacyAsPraxis

      You're suggesting that his information is anecdotal, but yours is too. Just because you don't know any RNs who earn more than you do as an NP doesn't mean that there aren't any RNs who earn more than you do or that there aren't many RNs who earn more than you do.
      I read many nursing and medical journals and there are quite a few articles that have been published in them about this particular topic. Google is your friend. There are more than a few articles about NPs who left the NP role to go back to bedside...especially during COVID, when many RN gigs were paying over $100 per hour. Even here on TH-cam there are many videos that NPs have posted explaining why they left the NP profession.
