If you are actually a psych nurse and have good connections absolutely. If you’re a ICU nurse who hates psych and thinks you’re gonna get rich… girl bai.
Just go DNAP - Nurse Anesthetist if ICU was your line of work. My faculty was an ICU nurse, and she is now a PMHNP plus, she teaches, so that is 300k a year.
I think it is not right for these schools to let in students who do not have any experience as a Psyvh RN! My school required it, but it was a long time ago so I don’t remember the number of years required. Employers are telling the new grads to go be a Psych RN for a few years! As for the money- some of the RNs on our unit make more or about the same as I do. They get holiday and overtime pay. I’m salary. However, I love my job. I feel I make an impact and do have autonomy and flexibility. I’ve been PMHNP for over 11 years and just wish I had done it sooner! There are many PMHNPs but due to many being new grads there are so many jobs out there! I get info every day- calls, emails, texts, etc. I think we are finally proving our worth that employers see the benefit and hiring more of us. 😊. Hopefully they will start paying us appropriately for all the work we do.
I’m transferring from, FNP to psych NP. FNP wasn’t my passion i did the upper end edu classes and adv patho hopefully enough transfer so i cam get my program done in 18 months
No it's not if you did it the correct way and worked as a psych nurse. You should have multiple preceptors in mind. Now if you came from the floor with no psych experience that's on you.
Unfortunately it has been more difficulty for individuals to find a preceptor but if you are able to network while getting experience , it goes a long way
This was one thing I was worried about with some of the online programs. I made sure to ask some docs I worked with if they'd be willing to take me on when the time came.
Thanks for the insight. I’m finishing up my BSN in a few months and plan to work in psych and ER. Do you think it’s worth doing a BSN-DNP later down the line? Or get my masters in a few years? I’m not sure what route to take
Similar situation. From what I’ve read online, it seems like people agree the DNP isn’t really worth it. If a pmhnp DNP becomes required like CRNA, you would probably grandfathered in like MSN CRNAs were.
@@mrhouse12 Thanks for sharing. I didn’t even think about that. MSN CRNAs are definitely grandfathered in. I guess we’ll see where we end up down the line. Best of luck!
Hello the psych dude ☺️! I hope you answered me, I am from Dubai and I am very passionate about studying PMHNP. In order to be sent, the study must be at least half on campus. Is there any university in the USA that teaches PMHNP on campus?
Im thinking about taking PMHNP but also thinking of opening a spa in the future. Are there limitations between FNP/adult Geriatrics NP to psych NP when it comes to prescribing medications?
I love being a PMHNP but burn out is prevalent if you do not have the adequate resources. I do not have therapy to support my patient panel. I am expected to see a certain amount of patients per day. We are not allowed to charge for therapy, only medication management.
Y'all need to learn if a patient deserves to be there or not?! When a Police Chief Ex Fiancee puts you in there.... y'all need to know the difference! 😮
So technically we are allowed to do it but does that mean we are qualified to do it right out of school? That’s very dependent on your program and how their curriculum is
I'm currently in PMHNP school and in my current preceptorship, I am amazed at how autonomous the PMHNPs in the hospital are.
EXACTLY why I'm switching careers to go in that field. Going into nursing just to become psych NP.

Yup, I agree that you’ll do great if you have psych experience with great communication skills

Attending a school that has ties in the community has helped me. Touro University in Vallejo.

Any thoughts or insight on University of Rochester PMHNP program? I’m a psych nurse in NYC and was accepted. Any any advice out there, I’d be grateful
Unfortunately, I haven’t met anyone that went to this program but I can reach out to my network and find out more info for you.

That's what I plan on doing. I'm PMHNP school now and plan on going to get my FNP in a few years.
Are you still working as a psych NP?
