I watch this to sharpen my understanding for what soldiers with PTSD go/went through. I'm a teacher in Germany and I prepare an event for our German heroes at my school. Soldiers attend our event to enlighten our students, and even one special operator from our KSK visits us. I'm hearing all this and I'm speechless in certain phases of this interview. My only wish is that our school's "Veteran Day" makes our heroes happy because they get their well-deserved attention. God bless all our soldiers.
Yes. The lowest points I’ve had have been during physical injury. I actually think it’s because we are attached to and identify with our body a lot of times. So if it’s in pain, we are hurt. But you are not your body. You are the consciousness.
DJ SHIPLEY, I hope you see this. I have always wondered how your relationship was with your dad. Not to be nosey but because I grew up in a broken home if addicts, and alcoholic with no education. I joined the Army at 17 went in became a combat engineer, hit SAPPER SCHOOL, JUMP SCHOOL, and Air Assault. For me I felt so good getting out of my home. When I got out I found your dad and I always wished that was my dad because then I could have been a SEAL possibly or a RANGER, SARC just next level shit. But thank you for the interview. Amazing interview. Its awesome to see where DJ is now from 2 years ago when he did the interview with Shawn Ryan. The advice about steady pressure is probably the best advice anyone can get. We live in a culture that wants everything now, and especially with mental health, change takes time. Its very easy to get caught up in the day to day, and not realize the change that takes place over time. You look back a day, week, or so, nothing seems to have changed. Look back 6 months or a year, and it is visible. The concept of steady pressure gives the day to day focus necessary to stick with it without burning yourself out in the process.
Apparently dj has a kid that he doesn’t claim but his dad is raising him. The kid was a product of an extra marital affair. This is partially covered in the Shawn Ryan pod but also his dad has talked publicly about it online
Thank you Dj for unknowingly helping me become a better father & husband, overall a better man. I love hearing DJ speak - I always come away filled with so much clarity. He has an amazing gift to motivate others to change one step at a time. I thank him for speaking his truth in every interview that he commits to 🤗.
Thank you so much for this interview. I spent 22yrs in Fire/Ems. I always allowed my men to come to me if they were having issues. While doing that. I was chief of my department at the time. When i started going down the drain after a number of bad calls that happened back to back to back. We brought in a crisis debriefing team. It was the 5th time they came to debrief is after bad calls. I use to be the quiet one. I would let everyone else talk. The final debriefing that we did. I snapped and lost it. I had a counselor chase me down and forced me to go to therapy were I was diagnosed with PTSD, Anxiety and depression and was pulled off the only job that I have every loved. That lead me down a dark path with addiction and it had taken me years to get my life just back to the halfway part.
I’m in a high-level, corporate career and this episode had a lot of takeaways. Being a father and husband and how to manage the dials hits home. I always love this man’s story and I learned a lot of new facts/tools. Also shoutout to my rock climbers!
I especially broke down in tears when DJ talked about when he and his wife finally reconnected again. The same thing happened to me. 7yrs of absolute hell, between two highly motivated and competitive people. Then something happened or someone told me what to do and it clicked. Your marriage will only be as good as YOU make it. Control your controllables. So I faced the music and started picking up the pieces of the disconnected shattered marriage she and I had both created. eliminating every excuse to work, exercise, and be apart for any reason possible. Be together. Talk and listen. Never give up.
Gosh dang I needed this more than you know. We are all battling something. I’m going through it currently and in the past. Just keep fighting don’t ever give up.
“People try to put a pedestal on you just because the patch you wear or cool school you went through… The stuff that happened to you at six still affects you whether you’re a navy seal or schoolteacher”. Wow I needed to hear that. Anxiety/Panic/trauma are scary real!!
Wow. This has helped me greatly. I'm ex Royal Navy 85/92 and h have had problems in my life. But listening to this has have me a new focus on doing my routine as I was starting to just lye in bed for days at a time, again. His story is amazing. Thank you.

I see a lot of comments and feedback from folks that havent been inside the looking glass. If you havent been apart of or performed at that level, save your rocks for your own glass house. I was only a mere Tier 2 Teamguy, everyone deals with what we did, what we saw and what we experienced differently. I applaud DJ for airing all of his problems and things he's had to fight through, its a testament to his character which just like his Dad, is pretty fucking great. Keep doing you Brother and continue to show people that you have to do whatever it takes to fight the dragon every day, to continue to find purpose, or you may lose the battle. We are worth it, all of us, not just combat veterans, not just veterans but men, we are worth it and finding ways and examples to share with others likely leads to helping save more, to keep the 3rd rail on contact. Okay, Now that I listened to this in its entirety, first, DJ you’re a hell of a speaker (You should do some speaking events professionally), Second the dial switch and buffer part I listened to twice. I have to call myself out, I am horrible at a few things, I come home stressed a lot, and I hide myself in a quiet part of my house until my mood changes (I wont do it Anymore). I talk shop on the phone while driving home sometimes and I continue the call while Im walking into my house. (I wont do it anymore). I watched DJs video on The Shawn Ryan Show, he’s very open, and honest about his struggles, simply trying to help the next person. Thanks for this video, I definitely learned a lot, and now have to hold myself accountable and make some course corrections in my life.
DJ Boy oh boy you hit the nail on the head with that shit. I was paramedic for 20+ years. I try to talk to the young guy/gals coming in on how bad it will get if you don’t talk to somebody. Call after call of dealing with death on all different levels. There are still calls if I talk about them I turn into an emotional wreck. Both sad and happy calls. Poignant stuff will get me too. Crazy I will have tears running down my face but not be sad.

I love to hear DJ talk about how real it is over in Iraq and Afghanistan. People who haven’t been there and in combat just do not understand the reality of the situation. It’s a different type of war than what America had ever fought and WAR is something that is unexplainable to somebody who hasn’t been through it. Also, the IED/EFP situation is pure luck or unlucky if your vehicle gets hit. That EFP doesn’t know your rank, color, creed, sex, or anything. It just shreds and kills. Great video.
He and Cole (and some others) go over some experiences and patreon questions that usually cover these topics. They have like 50-60 episodes ranging from 20min to 1.5 hrs per Q&A. I paid $5 because I found the SRS interview interesting and they talk about some interesting anecdotes, was worth the money for like 20+ hours of entertainment on two speed
His comment about skateboarding was interesting. There was a famous skateboarder back in the day, Mike Mo, and he was asked how his tricks were so consistent. He said he would learn one, and then commit to doing it over and over until he could land it 100 times in a row, and after that it was committed to muscle memory.

im on my husbands youtube account right now on his laptop so this is the wife of the dude in the profile pic lol, but i had to comment and say this so simply and so eagerly and so confidently, this documentary came to me on accident this morning, i do not watch content like this, my husband is was in the army, so yes military content is on this youtube account. i cannot relate to this, so i thought, but to you guys, and sincerely to DJ Shipley, this just saved my life. i cannot state how, or why on here, but know that you just saved my life. and i just wish you could know how much. thank you for making this, thank you DJ for you honesty, your transparency, and thank you to whatever higher power (not religious but spiritual myself) for having this video pop up and the right words spoken to catch my attention in one of the darkest mornings of my life. this is going to take time, but i am capable, and i am willing to put a minimal effort into myself everyday. i self sacrifice every day as a mother, a wife, but never for myself, and i am willing to start self sacrificing to better myself for my family, the only ones that matter, and especially for myself, because for the first time in a long time, im choosing life. you gave me gravity today, gave it back, helped plant my feet, thank you, truly, know that you saved my life, you...saved...my....life. -Heather

Watch DJ’s interview on the Shawn Ryan show. He gets really deep into his PTSD and how dark it got for him. Best interview ever.

Amazing interview brother I've been following DJ for 3 or 4 years that man is a man's man he's so cool and humble and his AR work is beautiful
He is so on point about the connection of physical fitness and mental health.
Yes. The lowest points I’ve had have been during physical injury. I actually think it’s because we are attached to and identify with our body a lot of times. So if it’s in pain, we are hurt. But you are not your body. You are the consciousness.
The part about dials and switches is gold, thank you very much!
I enjoy watching everything I can with you in it. I also had my battle with depression, anxiety and substance issues. Now I’m doing good and thriving. Your videos help me keep moving forward, thank you! SALUTE

The knowledge of self control and recognition of a bad ego is not something that defines your mistakes or fouls in life, instead it’s a weapon to overcome and recognize yourself and the things you have done wrong and that alone take more balls that just being pointing your finger and say he did this he did that like if you live in a sanctuary, behind a screen it’s easy to judge specially if your life it’s a mess or you have hidden monsters of your own because a wrong actions you took in life and don’t have the balls to see it or recognize it… it’s difficult to be a Men but it’s even harder to learn how to be a real Men
Amazing interview.

Thank you DJ for sharing this. Im a heavy equipment operator and struggle with anxiety & depression. What you said is so true especially for men. Just say it!!
That lead me down a dark path with addiction and it had taken me years to get my life just back to the halfway part.
allowed? you were a chief? lolololo where did you volunteer at there larper?
From an infantry marine, fire dept, to deep trouble. This gave me goosebumps and dj has been an awesome change and role model
i cant even express how phenomenal this interview was. i could listen to DJ for hours, he is by FAR my favorite person to listen to in this genre.
You and your Dad are so alike DJ. Keep up the greatness, you’ve both built your own legacies

Thank you so much for giving us this interview! Amazing to hear what DJ has been through and how he survives.
He's so genuine and that's rare today.
I’m in a high-level, corporate career and this episode had a lot of takeaways. Being a father and husband and how to manage the dials hits home. I always love this man’s story and I learned a lot of new facts/tools. Also shoutout to my rock climbers!
Awesome Interview. DJ is such an awesome person for being so genuine
Humbling interview. Thank You. I still think that the SRS interview w/ dj is the best thing ive seen on the net....this is pretty damn good too.
Wow. This has helped me greatly. I'm ex Royal Navy 85/92 and h have had problems in my life. But listening to this has have me a new focus on doing my routine as I was starting to just lye in bed for days at a time, again. His story is amazing. Thank you.

Great discussion, DJ. Your growth is exponential. The truth about trauma and your job, I understand very well.
Much respect to you and yours.
Hang in there gents, the Brotherhood needs every last one of us. #LLTB
