Border zone south of dust tower and north of the holy ruined mine is sweet. Very very easy to defend and decent building supplies with everything you need
I thought I'd found the perfect base location at Howler Maze. Great water, fertile, iron and copper. Few spiders about. Not much to worry me though. Then the acid rain started. I left that location :-((...
Fog islands location was my first base in this game. It is good, but it comes with couple of drabacks. The flat area is rather small, so you will be building on slight slopes for the most part and you will need plenty of wells. You also need to wall off a huge area if you want to secure copper nodes - and the nature of the ridgeline makes it difficult to set up the wall - oftentimes, you will end up with invisible gaps, allowing occasional fogmen to move through. Fogmen come in massive swarms - they are weak but break the gates in moments - while you CAN easily funnel them, you must use at least two gates for killzone. Proximity to Mongrel is nice, but you need a fast runner for trade. That said - if major factions want to get you... They need to punch through hordes of fogmen first. My second base was on Shem and I never really looked back. There is this area just south of the nomad camp, which is absolutely amazing. It is relatively flat, though it is very large, but covers a large deposit of iron and copper, good amount of water, decent area for building and solid grounds for arid crops, and it is suitable for hemp, so it is very versatile in terms of production - not the best for food, but suitable enough, and you can help yourself by hunting giraffes if you want to. The area is insanely easy to defend, because you can comfortably set up large walls and gates, even if you don't cheese with the lake killzone - you don't have to, really. The area is in proximity of multiple important and useful areas - Shark and Squin are both rather close. You also have a waystation nearby. Proximity to Flats Lagoon gives you a steady stream of money if you are producing hash. Black Desert City is also relatively close if you need robotic components and weapons of the highest quality. If there is any drawback to this location, that would be the invasions. Dust bandits, starving bandits are frequent. Shek bandits and Ninjas. Attack groups from major factions will also easily get there without being eaten along the way, if you have bad relations with them. So... The area is quite action packed.
I thought the fog islands was more than big enough for my hivers only playthrough. Shem is dope. I had a base very close to black desert city in my first playthrough, as well as one near the southern hive in the hivers only one. I just got one in vain in my shek only playthrough. My personal first game started with a desert base so kenshi has always felt best in a dust strom imho.
For my 1st base ever, I chose 1st location. Close to hashish smuggling and more importantly, lots of beaks around and towards Lagoon, so I'll have plenty of meat and hide. I plan to bring down my uber crafters from Sho Buttai, once I figure where to grow some hemp !
@@Orange01gaming Yeah, I built the base, a bit of a headache, but my star defense squad butchered everything, dust bandits, ninjas, beak things. I just finished the wall around the base, the ground is littered with hundreds of corpses, in various stages of decomposing. Got 2 medium cactus farms and 2 small wheat farms, I still have to make food trade runs though. We'll see, money is not an issue, I have an armorcrafter cranking out masterwork leathers in Sho Buttai.
@@Orange01gaming I'm a bit stuck lol. My base looks good, food is produced enough, I have 6 people on the walls at crossbows at all times and 4-6 defending the gate. Problem is, my roaming party is stuck at the base. I need ancient research and engineering to progress, but i can't leave the base, scores of starving and dust bandits. Thinking to grab my lone skeleton, runs very fast, and get him over to Squin to recruit 4 sheks and 2 more greenlanders. Train them, gear them, that would free up my exploring party to go look for those research artifacts.
My base is in Gut, as near as possible to Trader's Edge, where they pay good money for grog. Now my team is strong enough that I let my gate always open, so beak things keep going in and training the fighting skills of my team. At this point I have to build another base to keep exploring the game from a vantage point, without having to walk very long distances, but I'm too lazy for that. I made my base big enough to also get some of the desert biome, but in the end it was useless, there was nothing I could do on the desert that I couldn't do better in fertile lands.
Yeah Gut is a good one. Desert to me is really only good for role play. Cactus can grow without water and does well there, but you need wheat to make it into dustwhich. You could do cactus spam as hivers, or go all skelly.
Understand though, that the SHEM location for a base is really only perfect for people new to the game, I built my first ever base there and only after a few small easy fights there are no antagonists to speak of. In fact, I had to move my base because of lack of any action going on around my base, even when I buffed up the raids and sizes for attacking my base. So, if you wanna build and craft in peace and be left alone, yes, build there. =)
I think this is a bug that happens where stuff stops attacking/spawning around your base. I have it happen sometimes to a few of my bases - reloading sometimes fixes it
Bruh when I stayed here with a decent size squad I got my ass handed to me by a black dragon + dust bandit invasion combo, got my main character and a few other mid level characters die. Only escaped with 3 people

No major faction will visit you in leviathan coast or foglands, but you will be attacked by cannibals and fogmen respectively. Both seem to have good amounts of iron and copper.
Maybe Shek lands, they do visit but just allow their tribute and they run around your base taking some food now and again. They never seem to look in the animal feeder though so if you use those instead of food storage you lose nothing and just have an amusing pack of Shek crowding your stoves. Or just pack your food into someones backpack when they show up, it's easy to avoid any losses. There's a really nice beginner spot between The Hub and Squin, right on the road with iron, copper and stone with decent water and arid fertility. It's well located really, easy access to hiver, shek, holy nation lands plus the black desert, the swamp and armor king. And there is a ton of accessible early game loot within a fairly short distance in the swamps, the grid and even Vain. And those Squin guards will wreck anything you need to run from. It seems like Krals Chosen only raid there if you have Shek in your group and in that scenario the dust bandits should be the worst you face unless you have really pissed someone off. I have kinda a waystation there on my solo playthrough and she has been defending it just fine ever since she got 30-40 stats, she's a lot higher now and the battles are pretty one-sided. Never once been raided by Kral(she's human), not that I fear them anyway, can wipe out the Shek with decent athletics and a crossbow. Anyone with scout legs vs Shek isn't even a contest, doubly so if it's a hiver(50mph Beep is untouchable by all but turrets making the Shek Nation his bitch).
