  • In this video I pass on everything I could think of about growing nigella damascena also known as love in a mist. It's one of my absolute favourite flowers. It has been a really successful cool flower to grow in my cutting garden here in Scotland, zone 8b. Nigella are easy to grow from seed and care for in your garden. I have grown them since I started my cut flower garden in 2014. In this video I share everything I have learned throughout the growing seasons about these amazing flowers.
    In this video we look at:
    Why grow nigella?
    What varieties do I grow?
    How to grow nigella from seed
    Do they need supporting?
    What spacing do they need?
    Do you pinch out nigella?
    Do you need to deadhead nigella?
    What kind of growing conditions do they like and do they need fed?
    How do I harvest and condition nigella?
    Are they good for flower arranging or wedding work?
    Some of my favourite nigella are Miss Jekyll Dark Blue, Nigella Persian Jewels, Miss Jekyll white, Nigella Mulberry Rose . What are your favourite nigella to grow?

      Hi, I'd love a growing and cutting guide for snap dragons, larkspur and hespirus. I've struggled with even nasturtiums... wondering if it can sometimes be too hot for some seeds to germinate?

    Great, comprehensive video Catherine 🎉 I've just planted out my seedlings (it's nearly winter here) and fleeced them. I'll also sow some in pots for greenhouse overwintering... They add a lovely lacy, delicate texture to bouquets !

      That’s great you have got all your seedlings planted out and ready for overwintering. How cold does it get for you over the winter? Over the next few weeks I am going to get most things out including the dahlias which I am excited to see again soon.

      That's colder than I thought it would get for you so you probably do protect plants with fleece etc at times over the winter.

    Hello! I am really enjoying my nigella! The arctic blast last December took out a good many of my nigella seedlings, but a few have survived, and a later succession has started to bloom too. They are quite unique flowers. Your arrangements are so beautiful!

    I love Nigella! discovered it as a weed because of the periwinkle color, intricate petal & spikes bloom & trippy Opium Poppy type pod. I kept the seeds so am excited to learn all about planting them from you. I’m on the San Francisco Bay (literally) but have a large garden with l;it’s of sun, seasonal winds & occasional cool nights.

    Morning Catherine, great informative video. We have the same colours in Australia but also a type called Transformer which is yellow and an unusual shape. We are just about starting winter here and our soil is cold. I have thrown some seeds in the garden some weeks ago but I don’t see any results yet too cold or cheeky black birds have had a feed. It’s good to know I can try them indoors. I’ll try them in soil blocks so I don’t disturb the roots.

    • @cloudberryflowers-flowerfarm
      @cloudberryflowers-flowerfarm  ปีที่แล้ว

      They will probably pop up in the spring if they don’t germinate now, if the blackbirds didn’t get them. I just had to look up the transformer variety you mentioned as I had never heard of it. It’s really different isn’t it and a nice sunny yellow colour. I wonder if we can get it in the UK. Are you overwintering many flowers this year?

    Hi Catherine. Well done, again! I have a lovely patch of the blues and whites blooming in 6b St. Louis, Missouri USA. Some smaller plants wintered over, to my surprise! I didn't fall plant so I think it must have been from early reseeding from the early blooms in Spring of 2022. Which type of flower press do you use?

    • @cloudberryflowers-flowerfarm
      @cloudberryflowers-flowerfarm  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you, your patch of blue and white nigella sounds lovely. Early re seedings are so lovely to find in the garden. I use a couple of flower presses, one large traditional wooden one with blotting paper and one 9" microfleur one for the microwave too.

    Hi Catherine, fabulous informative content once again. Can I just ask, if I am growing it predominately for seed pods to make wreaths in autumn do I wait to cut until the pod has formed or do I cut when it’s in flower and let the pod form in the vase? Thanks xxx

    Loved rewatching this! sitting on my hands, as this is my favourite cut flower. When would be the earliest to start sowing this indoors? I have grow lights in a cool basement or the green house. Thank you

    • @cloudberryflowers-flowerfarm
      @cloudberryflowers-flowerfarm  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I just love nigella too! I am doing the same trying to be good and do no January seed sowing! For me I try to wait until mid Feb for the change to around 10ths daylight. That is without grow lights though so potentially you could start earlier if you have these. It depends on how long you want to be looking after seedlings indoors too but luckily nigella are quite tough so you can get them out earlier in March or April. I have found over the years there has been no real advantage to starting seeds off earlier and they tend to germinate and come on faster if I just hold off until February.

    So how do you press your flowers? I saw on HGTV where they used a press in the microwave for instant results.

    • @cloudberryflowers-flowerfarm
      @cloudberryflowers-flowerfarm  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have a traditional flower press I use but I do use a microwave flower press as well which has transformed pressing flowers for me as it does speed the whole process up. I definitely recommend them. The only thing you need to do with them is do it very slowly in short bursts as it is easy to overdo and lose the flowers. You quickly learn what works for different flowers with your own microwave though.

    • @cloudberryflowers-flowerfarm

      Hi Linda, yes they can easily be grown in pots. They don’t get too tall and can be spaced closer than other annuals which works well for pots.

      Hi and thanks so much for watching. It is a good self seeder so you could well have birds dropping them off and then springing up from that. Deer can eat so much of the flowers in a garden, how do you manage to keep them from eating everything? Do you have areas you have to fence?

    Hi. Sorry for bad english as it is not my first language. A friend send me its seeds. We have long summers, 1 month mild winter (minimum temperature goes to 9 degree Celsius) and we have harsh summers. I do grow lots of vegetables both summer and winter vegetables but winter have a very small window. So should I sow the nigella seeds when I sow winter vegetable seeds or should I sow its seeds when I sow summer vegetable seeds. Please guide. Thanks

    • @cloudberryflowers-flowerfarm
      @cloudberryflowers-flowerfarm  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hello, thanks for watching. Nigella take about 3 1/2 to 4 months to flower from
      seed sowing. They will flower best in sunny but not that hot weather as they are a hardy annual. If your summers get very hot nigella would be best flowering before it got too hot for them.Flower production can decline in extreme heat. So you would be best to sow the flower seeds in the autumn and over winter or sow in late winter for flowering early summer before the worst of the heat.

    Do they need dead heading to keep them blooming?

    • @cloudberryflowers-flowerfarm
      @cloudberryflowers-flowerfarm  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yes they do need dead heading to encourage new blooms but then you miss the wonderful seedpods so it depends what you want to use the plant for. You could dead head half your plants to encourage more flowers and leave the other half to go to seed to make use of the amazing pods.
