On defense the goal it is to stop the offense from scoring, not to hurt someone. Meanwhile, your goal in boxing & MMA is to win the fight and the quickest way to do so is to get a KO. In those kinds of combat sports, KOs are encouraged.

KOs are celebrated in boxing & MMA because fighters are actively trying to knock out their opponents. That is not the goal in football. Though KOs happen in football, players are not actively trying to do that. Knockouts & concussions in football are usually accidental. I say “usually” because there have been cases like the Saints’ “Bountygate” from a few years back where a defensive coach was paying players bounties to knock out opposing players.

Last night was the first time in 35 years of watching the NFL I asked myself it was worth it anymore. TBI never goes away. It effects you everyday from that day until the day you die. And none of those effects are good, and they don’t get better.
NFL will be phased to 7 on 7 in the future when a kid qb or Wideout gets killed or permanently paralyzed on a primetime game. it is coming the bigger and faster these guys get. I would watch flag football if it meant players don't get head trauma every other week.
Case in point, after that hit on AB, it wasn't AB anymore. Same reason that led to Seau dying. This is serious shit. I can't even bump my head into a cabinet on accident and not feel like ass, no way to imagine what it does to these players.

Dan, thanks for bringing up the issue of the "soft" coverage of this situation. The reluctance of the announcers both Sunday and again last night to ask pertinent, direct questions about why Tua was allowed to get back on the field both Sunday and play on Thursday looked like the network was trying to avoid biting the hand that feeds it. It's the rare broadcaster that will place the welfare of the players over that of the NFL.
He should’ve sat during the Bills game. The NFL ignored its own protocols to keep him on the field and the media bypassed it because they were so excited to see an undefeated team. It was as if they were wanting to see Tua get hurt against Cincinnati.

And thank you Mr. Patrick for talking about it, and not shying away from challenging both the league, for not addressing the situation, and analysts for not asking the difficult questions. It's unfortunate that "people" are not doing their jobs. It seems to me that no one wants to "upset" the league or the commissioner. This easily could have been, or still might be, career ending shit. Even more so, it is life changing, and certainly career changing. You can't take many of these kinds of injuries... Tua has some things to think about. Such a rising start, it really is shameful to see how much they were looking after him. I hope he has a long career after this, but damn... At what cost?
Realistically Tua should be shut down for the season. He suffered 2 concussions in quick succession this only lower your threshold for sustaining another one. I feel bad for him but if he plays too soon it won't end well.

My thoughts exactly on the "not a concussion" rhetoric from Sunday. I was surprised that it wasn't a concussion. But when they said it was a "back injury," I thought...well...ok. I'm paraplegic from spinal trauma. What are we talking about here? Did his muscle tissue cramp because Miami? Or...you know...is there a SPINAL COLUMN issue involved? It was "funny" on Sunday. Like...if that's "not a concussion," then are we just not going to care about things below the neck now? iunno. Dophins fan. So glad he played well in the 2nd half (better than Bridgewater for sure), but...yeah. That was pretty incredulous on Sunday. And this also brings up the ABSURDITY OF THURSDAY NIGHT GAMES. They’d be crazy to put him back in at all this season after that second concussion. Not only because of how bad the concussion was, but also the short time between them. His well being isn’t worth a game and some extra money
I am an American board certified ER physician, practicing now for 15 years. The first injury pattern was consistent with a head injury and the way he was walking definitely supports significant head injury. He never should have returned to play that early regardless of imaging. His second head injury was very tragically followed with decorticate posturing, seen in his hand position. This is a very concerning exam finding. Horrible. Neither injury fits spine injury. Both fit head injury. Perhaps the MD did not see the video nor told the accurate details of the injury pattern or subsequent signs/symptoms. My prayers and thoughts are with him and his family.
I know Dan's dad was a former Marine. I have a story to tell about concussions and the Corps. Ive had lets say alot of blasts to the head. While in combat i suffered a pretty good hit to the head, when it's multiple in a short amount of time it becomes different, ask Aikman, Or Palomalu or Hines right, its different, it feels different, I feel imo every concussion is different, and why is because of how and or where and with how much force. Being slammed backwards to the ground like that is an unexpected concussion to me, i had 2 of those, i swear those hurt worse than the one's i knew were coming. Dan just said something scary at the end about maybe Tua even coming back in 10 days, Ive been suffering as a 100% disabled vet for 2 decades now, my headaches never go away, the pain behind the eyes, the brightness of the sun is killer, Can you go back into Combat after a concussion, absolutely, ive seen it many times, can football players take 100's of hits to the head, yup, sure can, go look up Marion Barber's career. But the question isn't, hey your being paid alot of money meaning it's real important that you play again in 10 days cause our season is on the line, i know what that's like, hey back into combat cause you have to save lives, but what about the health of this man in 20's yrs. Those to the back of the head are painful. Had one as a kid. Don't remember anything I did that day except what caused it. Such a strange fog, almost like a serious drunken hangover, is what I remember. Blessed that it wasn't permanent. The tackling techniques in the nfl need an adjustment, like they did for sliding qb's.
This tells you how much NFL cares about the players. Tua should have stayed at the hospital for 24 hrs at least. Looks like the NFL and Miami try to cover up Tua's injury, they knew they've fucked up.

I stayed at the hospital longer than that with just a bruised knee from car accident because they had to do 3 tests in every 1 hr to make sure nothing is damaged but haven't shown up yet.

I think there was pressure from all sides to keep Tua on the field. Tua has already proven his toughness, battling serious injuries since Alabama. He is a gamer. His teammates obviously want him to play. The staff wants him to play, as they are facing BUFF & CIN. The front office & league want him to play for a marquee Sunday match up & Thurs prime time game. The rookie head coach needs him to play. It was in nobody's interest to sit, except Tua's family. So the system finds a way to get him "healthy".
I turned last nights game on late and saw Bridgewater in there, and thought... Good, Tua shouldn't be in there anyway. I had no idea until i heard the announcers say he was carted off earlier and I was like WHAAAAAT?!?! Having had 12 concussions, I can assure you that EVERY doctor has told me that I am not allowed to fly on a plane right after being evaluated. The amount of malpractice associated with this situation is disgusting.
Yes, every football fan I talked to this week said he shouldn't have played and shouldn't have come back into the game Sunday. This was Monday morning to Thursday afternoon interactions.
Look at it as two separate events. Sunday: for better or worst it was reported as a lower back and ankle injury Thursday night event: QB (slammed, rag-dolled, pile-driven) to a "cement" turf in a plastic hat. (when you watch the hit to the turf at regular speed, you can feel the impact [slow-mo takes the severity away]). I would say if he was 100% healthy before this event, he would not be after...
The NFL is too focused on players "passing" the concussion test for lack of a better word. If they hit their head on the grass, clutch their head, shake their head, get up, stumble and fall, then clearly something is wrong. Concussion or not they should not be allowed to play for several weeks. I know....it's money, but at some point can they care about all of their players?
Call it a wrap and roll all you want. I saw thrust, jerk and release. 1000x more force than Sunday. And Sunday’s incident should’ve sent Tua home for two weeks.
That's the point. In the absence of adequate rules, where clearly the player should not have returned to the field, the people in charge erred on the side of the team, and results of the game, rather than player health.
Yup, even if it was a back injury, it's just as dangerous for him to keep taking hits that would cause life altering injury if that was the case. Not enough people are talking about that. Concussion or back, if you're stumbling like he was on Sunday, he needs time off.
Not trying to play Devils advocate or anything, but a note about back injuries, specifically spine injuries: where your brain is in charge and gives the orders, your spine and nervous system pass along those orders. Your spine is 2nd in command in your body. Spinal injuries can cause all sorts of issues. My grandfather used to cut trees for a living and in 1982 he was cutting down a small tree with a chainsaw, maybe 15 inches around. It fell the wrong way and landed on his back and knocked him to the ground. His hearing was never the same after that. He went from a healthy 40-somethin year old man to one who was ~75% deaf. So to your question of what kind of back injury would cause someone to react that way, a spinal injury most certainly could do it. However, that does bring up the idea that if it was indeed spinal, again, should he even have been playing?
Its insane that they put him back in after halftime of the bills game and even more ridiculous that they lied about it by claiming it was a back injury and putting him back on the field just 4 days later. The dolphins need to be made an example of so this does not happen again.

It’s hard to quantify the future impact of head injuries. How hard and how many hits someone can withstand to the head before there’s permanent damage? Recovery has to be prioritized for these type of situation for the future health of the athlete. Theirs no point on making millions of dollars if your ability to think critically diminishes shortly after you retire.
I was wondering why someone with a concussion would be allowed to fly you aren't supposed to fly with head congestion bc it can burst your ear drums but you can fly with a concussion?
I did. Right after the Bills game, he should have had a couple games off. He didn’t look good at all after he fell and his teammates had to hold him up. Isn’t this what the protocol for? I was just waiting for him to fall down dizzy again in the Bengals game, but it was worse. Looked like Tua’s hands were twisted and frozen in place. Medical team appeared to push his hands down for him, but why? Definitely should not have gotten on a plane that night as well. Is there a brain surgeon and spine surgeon on board with all the equipment t they need just in case?
As far as the replay of the injury I have a little different take on it. I think it is probably important to show the consequences of minimizing seriousness of being injured to young football players and coaches. Remind them bad things can happen if you don't take this dangerous sport seriously and try to tough it out when it comes to head injuries. That is just my thoughts on it.
Let just say that Tua did not have the injury at Buffalo the week before. Does anyone really think that the tackle made on him in this game would have ended up any different? I'm not blaming the tackler, I'm just saying the end result of the tackle would have been the same. The centrifugal force was incredible when he hit the ground. There is no fault on the part of Miami. All these talking heads want to blame the organization because it's easy to blame an organizational entity. I will bet you that Tua himself would never blame the organization because he was part of the decision to play in this game.

I have lower back pain so I know what that feels like I don't get up and start wobbling no I just can't move until I take something so I knew what it was in the Buffalo game and I do blame the medical staff and the coaches because they have to protect the players from themselves and the fact that the money isn't guaranteed that's another reason why players don't want to miss any games and what Mike T did for Ryan was what Mike McDaniel was supposed to do for Tua because the players are always gonna say that they are fine that's why it's up to the medical staff and the coaches to protect the players from themselves that's literally their job to make the judgement call
Dan Patrick I don't believe you guys read the comments but I will try and lay something out for you. I once got a concussion and went to the hospital and they said I was just fine. I said to them can I work on Sunday and they said yes. This was a Wednesday night. Work Sunday went to sleep woke up in the morning and went to a building with my pick up track to talk to some shippers. I did not know when I woke up that I could not hear anything. I mean I could not hear anything but I did not know I could not hear anything. I drove I talked to some people went by went back to my pickup truck sat there with the door open. somebody came up to me and talked to me. I looked right at them. I could not hear him I could not hear the traffic I could not hear the birds I could not hear the sounds of the gravel. No one was alarmed because i looked normal. In fact i was so un normal that i eventually knew something was different, Yet I was unalarmed unconcerned and a bit curious. I was curious to the point of saying to myself Hey this is pretty interesting. Now that was 5 days after my original concussion. For 5 days I was normal. I woke up on the 5th day And was totally not normal but carried on. It's like being unconcerned and unknowing at the same time you know something's wrong. It wore off after about 3 hours and never happened again. That kid should have been excused from the Thursday game. But now he should definitely be sat down for 2 consecutive games. You will notice that I said I talked to the shippers and the shippers talked to me and gave me some instructions. The truth is I do not know how that happened. Very short sentences and perhaps I read their lips. I just don't know. I know I couldn't hear a single thing. Yet I could get in my truck and drive away.

At some stage we have to face up to the fact that players get concussions... a lot. Players also get injured, a lot. Some players have short careers because of injury, Tua was injured before he even started in the league. Credit to the young man he fought back each time and kept getting injured. Some people are just not physically up to this violent sport. Sam Bradford anyone? IT does not mean the leaghue should do more to protect players dfrom themselves, absolutely they should but again if a player loses a £250k performance fee because someone decided they were not fit to play who compensates that? Anything that also depends on the players sanction to continue is going to be compromised with performance or appearance related compensation.

I don't think the issue is whether or not people get concussions at football games The problem is there is established science about concussions designed to minimize the long term life altering effects of them. One such is if you have a concussion, you don't play a contact sport for 7-14 days after. by putting Tua on the field last night the Dolphins and League put him in grave danger of a major head trauma that could have life and career altering affects up to and including death. Again, concussions happen, but that concussion last night didn't happen in a vacuum. It looks like a great deal of negligence, intentional or unintentional was at play yesterday and gravely endangered Tua's life and career for a single regular season football game.
Daniel. My friend stumbles at a party, he is drunk. He's not driving. My boxer is stumbling after who knows how many blows, he's done, it's over. My football player shakes his head and stumbles after a big hit, dude can get back in there and play. it's not over, he's just shaken up. you cant compare oranges to apples. Overall I think the argument is correct but lets not pretend like we haven't been seeing this stuff happening every week for years on end. Boxers get hit in the head for a living and when a boxer is dazed its much more dangerous for them than a football player. Drunk Drivers, don't even need to go there. Anyone ever notice the tackling style being used in the last few years? Players are lifting, twisting, dropping, and/or whipping other players as they tackle them. Its a finishing move that leads to additional injuries....IMO It needs to be stopped and penalized. The additional pushing after the throw is huge as well. Anyone who looks at this can clearly see the problem .
Lets not get things twisted. This is 100% on the independent neurologist. The player, head coach, team doctor, and everyone else has their lane, and this neurologist was brought in to be the authority on this matter. We need a name and answers.

One of the many reasons players lie about getting concussed, just look at Alex Smith in SF. He was having one his best seasons at the position, gets hurt, Kaepernick takes over, and Smith never starts for the team again. A concussion is a ticket to losing your job in this league, and all players know it. McDaniel said "Tua even admitted he had a headache". In other words, it was so bad, Tua had to admit it. They keep it to themselves otherwise.
Everybody knew it was a concussion or some brain injury on Sunday. NFL needs hard and fast rule: if a player hits his head, like Tua did on Sunday, and shows symptoms of brain injury, like Tua did on Sunday by stumbling to ground, he must sit out the remainder of that game and the next. Have a guy in replay booth to make call if everybody on field, dr, officials, coach, or his family , can’t see it.

Players will lie. That’s why it should never be left up to a player to decide if they feel okay to play. Even if they say they feel okay doesn’t mean they are okay.
MIA did the same thing Washington did with RG3. They let the player lie to them, knowing the player is not ok. The team knows that the player will hurt his own career/life not the team’s!
Lord knows It's understandable that people think the worst of the NFL and the Dolphins organisation at the moment but maybe just maybe the Doc who assessed Tua on Sunday genuinely just got it wrong. We all make mistakes at our jobs. Medical professionals aren't immune from that sadly.
My only issue is the lying about his back. If he had a knock on the head, he can recover slowly over the next 4 days. The wobbling on Sunday was definitely a knock to the head.Was it substantiated as a concussion?. Apparently not. Thursday obviously was a different story. Other medical experts, neurologists, states the flight home after evaluations in Cincinnati should not be a concern. I feel he should have stayed overnight however..Also as of October 2nd, new video is out of TUA posturing after the head trauma on Sunday. His hands appear to do the same thing.
Injuries like this, the illegal violent hits, and announcers minimizing it (once as a player was being carted off the field) saying things like "that's just football" is why I stopped watching eight years ago after being a football fan for around fifty years. The league and the teams putting up with this at the expense of the players' health started making me feel like an enabler.

KOs are celebrated in boxing & MMA because fighters are actively trying to knock out their opponents. That is not the goal in football. Though KOs happen in football, players are not actively trying to do that. Knockouts & concussions in football are usually accidental. I say “usually” because there have been cases like the Saints’ “Bountygate” from a few years back where a defensive coach was paying players bounties to knock out opposing players.

Last night was the first time in 35 years of watching the NFL I asked myself it was worth it anymore. TBI never goes away. It effects you everyday from that day until the day you die. And none of those effects are good, and they don’t get better.
NFL will be phased to 7 on 7 in the future when a kid qb or Wideout gets killed or permanently paralyzed on a primetime game. it is coming the bigger and faster these guys get.
I would watch flag football if it meant players don't get head trauma every other week.

The reluctance of the announcers both Sunday and again last night to ask pertinent, direct questions about why Tua was allowed to get back on the field both Sunday and play on Thursday looked like the network was trying to avoid biting the hand that feeds it. It's the rare broadcaster that will place the welfare of the players over that of the NFL.
He should’ve sat during the Bills game. The NFL ignored its own protocols to keep him on the field and the media bypassed it because they were so excited to see an undefeated team.
It was as if they were wanting to see Tua get hurt against Cincinnati.

It's unfortunate that "people" are not doing their jobs. It seems to me that no one wants to "upset" the league or the commissioner. This easily could have been, or still might be, career ending shit. Even more so, it is life changing, and certainly career changing. You can't take many of these kinds of injuries... Tua has some things to think about. Such a rising start, it really is shameful to see how much they were looking after him. I hope he has a long career after this, but damn... At what cost?
Realistically Tua should be shut down for the season. He suffered 2 concussions in quick succession this only lower your threshold for sustaining another one. I feel bad for him but if he plays too soon it won't end well.

My thoughts exactly on the "not a concussion" rhetoric from Sunday. I was surprised that it wasn't a concussion. But when they said it was a "back injury," I thought...well...ok. I'm paraplegic from spinal trauma. What are we talking about here? Did his muscle tissue cramp because Miami? Or...you know...is there a SPINAL COLUMN issue involved? It was "funny" on Sunday. Like...if that's "not a concussion," then are we just not going to care about things below the neck now? iunno. Dophins fan. So glad he played well in the 2nd half (better than Bridgewater for sure), but...yeah. That was pretty incredulous on Sunday. And this also brings up the ABSURDITY OF THURSDAY NIGHT GAMES. I am an American board certified ER physician, practicing now for 15 years. The first injury pattern was consistent with a head injury and the way he was walking definitely supports significant head injury. He never should have returned to play that early regardless of imaging. His second head injury was very tragically followed with decorticate posturing, seen in his hand position. This is a very concerning exam finding.
Horrible. Neither injury fits spine injury. Both fit head injury. Perhaps the MD did not see the video nor told the accurate details of the injury pattern or subsequent signs/symptoms.

I know Dan's dad was a former Marine. I have a story to tell about concussions and the Corps. Ive had lets say alot of blasts to the head. While in combat i suffered a pretty good hit to the head, when it's multiple in a short amount of time it becomes different, ask Aikman, Or Palomalu or Hines right, its different, it feels different, I feel imo every concussion is different, and why is because of how and or where and with how much force. Being slammed backwards to the ground like that is an unexpected concussion to me, i had 2 of those, i swear those hurt worse than the one's i knew were coming. Dan just said something scary at the end about maybe Tua even coming back in 10 days, Ive been suffering as a 100% disabled vet for 2 decades now, my headaches never go away, the pain behind the eyes, the brightness of the sun is killer, Can you go back into Combat after a concussion, absolutely, ive seen it many times, can football players take 100's of hits to the head, yup, sure can, go look up Marion Barber's career. But the question isn't, hey your being paid alot of money meaning it's real important that you play again in 10 days cause our season is on the line, i know what that's like, hey back into combat cause you have to save lives, but what about the health of this man in 20's yrs. Those to the back of the head are painful. Had one as a kid. Don't remember anything I did that day except what caused it. Such a strange fog, almost like a serious drunken hangover, is what I remember. Blessed that it wasn't permanent.
The tackling techniques in the nfl need an adjustment, like they did for sliding qb's.

This tells you how much NFL cares about the players. Tua should have stayed at the hospital for 24 hrs at least. Looks like the NFL and Miami try to cover up Tua's injury, they knew they've fucked up.

I stayed at the hospital longer than that with just a bruised knee from car accident because they had to do 3 tests in every 1 hr to make sure nothing is damaged but haven't shown up yet.

I love football, but from an early age it was clear to my husband & I that my boys were built for the track team vs hockey/football. I was watching TNF & was never so grateful we kept them out of contact sports until that incident.

I think there was pressure from all sides to keep Tua on the field. Tua has already proven his toughness, battling serious injuries since Alabama. He is a gamer. His teammates obviously want him to play. The staff wants him to play, as they are facing BUFF & CIN. The front office & league want him to play for a marquee Sunday match up & Thurs prime time game. The rookie head coach needs him to play. It was in nobody's interest to sit, except Tua's family. So the system finds a way to get him "healthy".

I had no idea until i heard the announcers say he was carted off earlier and I was like WHAAAAAT?!?! Having had 12 concussions, I can assure you that EVERY doctor has told me that I am not allowed to fly on a plane right after being evaluated. The amount of malpractice associated with this situation is disgusting.

Yes, every football fan I talked to this week said he shouldn't have played and shouldn't have come back into the game Sunday. This was Monday morning to Thursday afternoon interactions.
The problem is my opinion is not valued by the NFL, that's why I don't buy their tickets or merchandise. I only watch free games.
Tua’s situation overshadows all of football, this season. We, as spectators, cannot stand for this.
Look at it as two separate events.
Sunday: for better or worst it was reported as a lower back and ankle injury
Thursday night event: QB (slammed, rag-dolled, pile-driven) to a "cement" turf in a plastic hat. (when you watch the hit to the turf at regular speed, you can feel the impact [slow-mo takes the severity away]). I would say if he was 100% healthy before this event, he would not be after...
His head hit harder on Sunday.
The NFL is too focused on players "passing" the concussion test for lack of a better word. If they hit their head on the grass, clutch their head, shake their head, get up, stumble and fall, then clearly something is wrong. Concussion or not they should not be allowed to play for several weeks. I know....it's money, but at some point can they care about all of their players?
Call it a wrap and roll all you want. I saw thrust, jerk and release. 1000x more force than Sunday. And Sunday’s incident should’ve sent Tua home for two weeks.
That's the point. In the absence of adequate rules, where clearly the player should not have returned to the field, the people in charge erred on the side of the team, and results of the game, rather than player health.
Yup, even if it was a back injury, it's just as dangerous for him to keep taking hits that would cause life altering injury if that was the case. Not enough people are talking about that. Concussion or back, if you're stumbling like he was on Sunday, he needs time off.
Not trying to play Devils advocate or anything, but a note about back injuries, specifically spine injuries: where your brain is in charge and gives the orders, your spine and nervous system pass along those orders. Your spine is 2nd in command in your body. Spinal injuries can cause all sorts of issues. My grandfather used to cut trees for a living and in 1982 he was cutting down a small tree with a chainsaw, maybe 15 inches around. It fell the wrong way and landed on his back and knocked him to the ground. His hearing was never the same after that. He went from a healthy 40-somethin year old man to one who was ~75% deaf. So to your question of what kind of back injury would cause someone to react that way, a spinal injury most certainly could do it. However, that does bring up the idea that if it was indeed spinal, again, should he even have been playing?
Its insane that they put him back in after halftime of the bills game and even more ridiculous that they lied about it by claiming it was a back injury and putting him back on the field just 4 days later. The dolphins need to be made an example of so this does not happen again.
Yes, they should at least suspend the coach for rest of the season, maybe even fire him and never allow him to coach again at any level. Totally irresponsible.

It’s hard to quantify the future impact of head injuries. How hard and how many hits someone can withstand to the head before there’s permanent damage? Recovery has to be prioritized for these type of situation for the future health of the athlete. Theirs no point on making millions of dollars if your ability to think critically diminishes shortly after you retire.

I did. Right after the Bills game, he should have had a couple games off. He didn’t look good at all after he fell and his teammates had to hold him up. Isn’t this what the protocol for? I was just waiting for him to fall down dizzy again in the Bengals game, but it was worse. Looked like Tua’s hands were twisted and frozen in place. Medical team appeared to push his hands down for him, but why? Definitely should not have gotten on a plane that night as well. Is there a brain surgeon and spine surgeon on board with all the equipment t they need just in case?
As far as the replay of the injury I have a little different take on it. I think it is probably important to show the consequences of minimizing seriousness of being injured to young football players and coaches. Remind them bad things can happen if you don't take this dangerous sport seriously and try to tough it out when it comes to head injuries. That is just my thoughts on it.
Let just say that Tua did not have the injury at Buffalo the week before. Does anyone really think that the tackle made on him in this game would have ended up any different? I'm not blaming the tackler, I'm just saying the end result of the tackle would have been the same. The centrifugal force was incredible when he hit the ground. There is no fault on the part of Miami. All these talking heads want to blame the organization because it's easy to blame an organizational entity. I will bet you that Tua himself would never blame the organization because he was part of the decision to play in this game.

I have lower back pain so I know what that feels like I don't get up and start wobbling no I just can't move until I take something so I knew what it was in the Buffalo game and I do blame the medical staff and the coaches because they have to protect the players from themselves and the fact that the money isn't guaranteed that's another reason why players don't want to miss any games and what Mike T did for Ryan was what Mike McDaniel was supposed to do for Tua because the players are always gonna say that they are fine that's why it's up to the medical staff and the coaches to protect the players from themselves that's literally their job to make the judgement call
Dan Patrick I don't believe you guys read the comments but I will try and lay something out for you. I once got a concussion and went to the hospital and they said I was just fine. I said to them can I work on Sunday and they said yes. This was a Wednesday night. Work Sunday went to sleep woke up in the morning and went to a building with my pick up track to talk to some shippers. I did not know when I woke up that I could not hear anything. I mean I could not hear anything but I did not know I could not hear anything. I drove I talked to some people went by went back to my pickup truck sat there with the door open. somebody came up to me and talked to me. I looked right at them. I could not hear him I could not hear the traffic I could not hear the birds I could not hear the sounds of the gravel. No one was alarmed because i looked normal. In fact i was so un normal that i eventually knew something was different, Yet I was unalarmed unconcerned and a bit curious. I was curious to the point of saying to myself Hey this is pretty interesting. Now that was 5 days after my original concussion. For 5 days I was normal. I woke up on the 5th day And was totally not normal but carried on. It's like being unconcerned and unknowing at the same time you know something's wrong. It wore off after about 3 hours and never happened again. That kid should have been excused from the Thursday game. But now he should definitely be sat down for 2 consecutive games. You will notice that I said I talked to the shippers and the shippers talked to me and gave me some instructions. The truth is I do not know how that happened. Very short sentences and perhaps I read their lips. I just don't know. I know I couldn't hear a single thing. Yet I could get in my truck and drive away.

At some stage we have to face up to the fact that players get concussions... a lot. Players also get injured, a lot. Some players have short careers because of injury, Tua was injured before he even started in the league. Credit to the young man he fought back each time and kept getting injured. Some people are just not physically up to this violent sport. Sam Bradford anyone? IT does not mean the leaghue should do more to protect players dfrom themselves, absolutely they should but again if a player loses a £250k performance fee because someone decided they were not fit to play who compensates that? Anything that also depends on the players sanction to continue is going to be compromised with performance or appearance related compensation.

The problem is there is established science about concussions designed to minimize the long term life altering effects of them. One such is if you have a concussion, you don't play a contact sport for 7-14 days after. by putting Tua on the field last night the Dolphins and League put him in grave danger of a major head trauma that could have life and career altering affects up to and including death.
Again, concussions happen, but that concussion last night didn't happen in a vacuum. It looks like a great deal of negligence, intentional or unintentional was at play yesterday and gravely endangered Tua's life and career for a single regular season football game.

Anyone ever notice the tackling style being used in the last few years? Players are lifting, twisting, dropping, and/or whipping other players as they tackle them. Its a finishing move that leads to additional injuries....IMO It needs to be stopped and penalized. The additional pushing after the throw is huge as well. One of the many reasons players lie about getting concussed, just look at Alex Smith in SF. He was having one his best seasons at the position, gets hurt, Kaepernick takes over, and Smith never starts for the team again. A concussion is a ticket to losing your job in this league, and all players know it. McDaniel said "Tua even admitted he had a headache". In other words, it was so bad, Tua had to admit it. They keep it to themselves otherwise.
Everybody knew it was a concussion or some brain injury on Sunday. NFL needs hard and fast rule: if a player hits his head, like Tua did on Sunday, and shows symptoms of brain injury, like Tua did on Sunday by stumbling to ground, he must sit out the remainder of that game and the next. Have a guy in replay booth to make call if everybody on field, dr, officials, coach, or his family , can’t see it.
Tua will be back on the field unfortunately and I am very afraid of what will happen next.

Players will lie. That’s why it should never be left up to a player to decide if they feel okay to play. Even if they say they feel okay doesn’t mean they are okay.
MIA did the same thing Washington did with RG3. They let the player lie to them, knowing the player is not ok. The team knows that the player will hurt his own career/life not the team’s!

Lord knows It's understandable that people think the worst of the NFL and the Dolphins organisation at the moment but maybe just maybe the Doc who assessed Tua on Sunday genuinely just got it wrong. We all make mistakes at our jobs. Medical professionals aren't immune from that sadly.

My only issue is the lying about his back. If he had a knock on the head, he can recover slowly over the next 4 days. The wobbling on Sunday was definitely a knock to the head.Was it substantiated as a concussion?. Apparently not. Thursday obviously was a different story. Other medical experts, neurologists, states the flight home after evaluations in Cincinnati should not be a concern. I feel he should have stayed overnight however..Also as of October 2nd, new video is out of TUA posturing after the head trauma on Sunday. His hands appear to do the same thing.
Injuries like this, the illegal violent hits, and announcers minimizing it (once as a player was being carted off the field) saying things like "that's just football" is why I stopped watching eight years ago after being a football fan for around fifty years. The league and the teams putting up with this at the expense of the players' health started making me feel like an enabler.
