Haha, that’s how you know it’s out and I actually play it, not just sitting in a box ;) (Also, I’m too lazy to clean it and too cheap for a air duster😅)
Subharmonicon actually makes great acid bass sounds...sending eg to filter to open filter with midi controller. The filter is great too very open very bright and musical . Moog really hit this out the park even though moog took the ideas from the past its great.
I know this video is old and people have already said it but I genuinely appreciate the fact you used it as is, not cleaning everything to pristine condition, it adds a layer of connection to the viewer in my opinion. Great video too!
Thanks for posting this video! I got my Subharmonicon a few days ago and am having a ton of fun exploring it . The concept you discuss here is really interesting and can be used for another technique as well: chord changes. With 6 oscillators you can make 5 distinct chords (by my count) depending on how you blend them ... an intriguing concept!
You make it look easy. Seen a few folks say that the Subharmonicon is the Gateway to Madness and that once you Find the sweet spot hit RECORD NOW as they’ve turned it off and come back later. No knobs etc changed and the lush beauty they found no longer exists. Yet I’m still considering it for its ability to do just as you demonstrate in this video. Thanks for making it look reasonably simple and explaining clearly.
In early firmware versions, some settings weren't saved properly (e.g. which oscillator or sub-oscillator the sequencers are affecting), which was causing this kind of pain. It was an easy fix though - fiddle with the sequencer targeting until you're back to the sound you were after. It's been fixed for a while now.
Thank you man! Your Minor 11 video really sold me on the harmonic quality of the Sub, and this video helps tremendously! I've been trying to find the best way to send MIDI (pitch) from GM to SH, while the SH slaves to the MidiClock+. The horror!
Thanks Wells, it totally kills as revenue to make videos under 10 mins, but why make people suffer for information. I don’t make no money from YT anyway haha
Nice to see I’m not the only one that wants meat not fluff. I honestly don’t care if the person had an incredible dinner or their puppy is getting big etc etc which some people tend to add to their videos. Tell me what I’m here to learn Sifu not interested in laundry tips or your new barber etc
Ay the end were you playing major and minor chords without retuning? Using the wholetone quantizer? I currently do this in euro but it requires a harmony quantizer and a set of oscilcators so tempted by a subharmonicon if it will do it simpler!
Very much late to the game here (4 years !), but tuning the two main oscillators to the 5th and 7th is a masterful trick ! I will try it firsthand as soon as I can lay my hands on my SubH. But what about minor 7th chords then ? Did I miss something in your explanation, or did you not elaborate on the topic in the video ? Thanks for the tip anyway.
Hi how are you connecting the moog subh with the grandmother. I’ve come back to this video a few times and am still a tad confused however. I own both and am trying to figure out the same. Any advice would be much appreciated
Great way of putting things! Subbed! Q; Would you recommend I get this Moog as a complete beginnerto the sound design side of things.? I've been playing the piano for the past six years and i want to add something more special to my playing/performances. A machine.. hardware I can connect to a digital piano and use with together somehow. Do you have any suggestions as to what direction I should go? Where sound I start? I honestly have no clue what the difference is between different "waves" or what envelopes are or what an oscillator actually means.. any recommendations? Thanks!
Saving this to come back to it. I'm looking for another modular I can sequence chords with. I haven't watched the whole video yet because I'm busy af. But wondering if I can use the gmothers sequencer or the subharmonicons sequencer to sequence chords?
Also is it just me or did there used to be more haters up in here before your hiatus? Anyway, good to see all the positive energy here. You've never made a bad video. Always fun and worthwhile. Thanks!
Haha, I’m sure the haters will return at some point. I’ve been doing things my way since the beginning and won’t apologize for being me. (Plus, the way you know you’re doing well is when people spend time out of their lives just to hate, you kinda need people to waste their time like that 😅) My problem was that I actually responded at all. After some talking to from other better TH-camrs than myself I learned that you literally have to ignore the comments section. I was taking it personal, now, I kinda have taken a “who cares” approach to all this. So I literally don’t read 90% of comments now, just create. That’s what most others let me know they do. It sucks, but you have to just decide those people need to find peace. I’ve made mistakes, but heck, I don’t dwell on hiccups from the past. Thanks for the kindness, I mean, the world is crazy so why not create things if and when we can :)
I am still so lost. How do you connect this with the grandmother? I have been trying to figure this out for ages. I use the 3.5 to 5 pin midi for the subharmonicon which connects to midi thru of my grandma synth because my grandma already reads midi clock from the way i setup things. How do you then play the subharmonicon without using the play button? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Ive had both these synths for some time and am still so confused
solid tutorial. Thanks for sharing. I have one slight concern though. Doesn’t this method transpose the chord all over the keyboard without changing the quality of the chord? Im thinkin i can use the sequencers patched to osicllator playing the third, but idk.
HI thanks for the great vid and info! However when I first tune my osc 1 to G and sub 1 to C with no problem, whenever I try to tune the sub 2 to the lowest C, my tuner just goes crazy, impossible to get a clean note, it jumps to different notes constantly... I see you didn't quantize the notes to Ji or Et, but I have better results tuning with the Ji 8... does it matter? Any idea what might be the problem? Thanks!
i’m thinking of getting the novation peak. But it has pretty bassy lead sounds. Have you had any issues fitting harmonically rich sounds into a mix? got any tips? yes i’m asking on a moog tutorial video.
A good tips that have helped me with that is to add an "Exciter" plugin to the track. (Logic pro x has a really good stock Exciter) An Exciter will add harmonics to the sound and make it sound brighter. It can be a good way of getting more of a prophet-ish sound on your synthesizer. It's sometimes used on human voices to make it sound more clear in a mix 😊 Sorry for my bad English. If this doesn't help, I hope someone other or OP Will give a good answer. 😊
If you like the Peak but think it has too much bass, it might be worth considering a Hydrasynth instead. It's similar but less bassy, has some significant UI improvements (especially for mod matrix assignment), and offers more effects and a second filter if you want to EQ sounds into a mix.
Turn on Zoom H5, Press menu button on right side, use scroll wheel to go down to “Tools”, press scroll wheel and within there you’ll find a Tuner and Metronome.
