- In this video I show you how to connect your original older 4 speed manual transmission such as a Borg Warner Super T10 or a Muncie M20/M21/M22 to your new LS Series engine you might want to swap into your car.
Part Numbers you need:
Sachs - Clutch Kit Part # K5552-03 from O'Reilly's
Note *(10 Spline clutch)
Sachs - Flywheel Part # NFW1050 from O'Reilly's
LS2/LS7 Pilot Bearing Part # : 57080 from O'Reilly's
Grade 8 Metric Bolts for pressure plate - ยานยนต์และพาหนะ
This is why I fuckin love youtube
This is exactly what I am doing on my 61 Apache. I didn’t realize the V8 bellhousing from 62-66 was the same mounting as the 61 bellhousing for a 235. Nobody on the Facebook forums know this swap is possible in a 60-61 Apache. Good work with the video
found this link on an ls swap group, decided to take a look.... great info, well worded just a great video overall
im currently swapping my c10 and this video helped me a lot. Thanks for the solid info.
Best explanation I’ve seen yet about doing this. Thanks
Dude I was about to give up until you said something about the dowel pins whew! Thank you very informative
Thanks for posting your swap video! Very informative and definitely info I will keep around for future builds.
Great video. You are the only one has such a video like this. Thank you.
I will be doing this on a future build. Thanks for the video!
I am so indebted to you! I have a 92 Z28 trans that I have been wanting to swap into my 85 vette...4.8's are $300 around here and will be much more fun than TPI....Thanks Again-
Andrew
this is very useful information for me on an upcoming swap
perfect video just what i was looking for thank you
Cool video still after 9 years.
Appreciate your time and consideration for sharing this valuable information
I'm going to star a swab in my c10 and this video looks like a good start
Awesome work! Helped me a bunch
I am curious what bell housing you said you were using. I want to mount a Getrag 5 speed from a 92 chevy 1500 to a 5.3 liter. Great video and info. Thanks Jeff
Thanks so much for your video. You guys saved me a sh!t load of time. Thank you thank you thank you..........
I wanted to build a 408 stroker LQ4/LQ9 and mate it to my Super T10 in my 1988 Corvette. So I hope this works :)
Any more updates. Awesome video. I would love to see it driving. I'm currently building a 55 first series pickup
Nice information man i just start a new project to swap a 6.0 lq4 on my 91 chevy pick up.. but my question is if i can use my stock 5 speed transmission the was on the truck before..???
Thanks for this!
Good stuff guys
I found an even better pilot bearing to use is one from a 01-06 2500HD with the nv4500 5 speed trans. It's a big sealed bearing that goes in the big outer part of the crank.
Fml I had a choice between that one you mentioned and this one in the vid. I should’ve got the other one because this one sucks compared to it.
issues ive heard of are that the old style clutch used shouldered bolts that are like dowel pins. the metric bolts will only locate it by their threads. the new style presssure plate uses the dowel pins for a reason.
I would assume this is the same procedure for adapting the LS series to the Doug Nash 4+3 Transmission in a 1988 Corvette Z51?
Thanks for the video, helps a ton. Quick question, I'm using ARP pressure plate bolts. Any idea what I should torque them to? I'm mating an all aluminum 5.3 to an M20.
so did you have to do anything to the tuning of the computer to run a manual transmission?
Good video
Would this work for a chevy k10 with a 4 speed with bull low
Does this still work with a 26 spline clutch for 2 piece rear main seal
Did you have to do anything to the ECM in order to run manual option???
It's a small world lol I'm in Anchorage too. Do you know if you can bolt up a lq4 to the 5 speed that's in a 92 s10 with a 4.3?
this is so freaking cool dude. now im going to go tear out a lm7 5.3 and bolt it to my muncie then slap that shizz into my 78 trans. lol thanks for the info
With this setup, what did you do for a speedo? doesn't the computer need a vss signal? I was wondering because it would be bitchin to get a heads up display (HUD) from a corvette
Now does this flywheel bring mounting flange back .400 of an inch to line up properly mcload makes a flywheel that brings it back .400 but its 400 bucks please let me know. Thanks
The 12557583 pilot bearing that fits into the largest counterbore is the bearing that should be used in this situation. Doing what is shown in the video is not advised.
Just curious, but why ?
@@COATIF67 Its made for the crank and is longer, giving input shaft stability
@@realdeathpony thanks i lost my job so haven't moved forward but im back on my feet and this will help a ton
@@COATIF67 how'd you make out with that bearing?
do you know if the sm465 trans will bolt right up like this? and ive also heard of people having to use a flywheel spacer to get the clutch fork to engage the clutch enough? any issues with that?
I have a 2005 6.0 chevy and I did the same but the starter will not work what are u doing different and what is the part number for the starter u are using
what bellhousing you using in this swap?
on the bellhousing is there a top bolt hole on it ?
Have you had any problems with it now sice this has been installed for some time?
what's the best place to find the bell housing?
I have an 89 camaro with a LT1 T56. My question is: Is all I need for this to work on a LS1 is this flywheel? I can use the same genII bellhousing? This would really cut down on my swap cost since I'm in Germany.
great vid, kinda of a off topic question, but it seems you would know alittle more about this then myself, i have a 2002 gmc sierra 6.0L, i would like swap out the 4speed trans for a 6speed,, is it worth it/or do able , thanks
what would you need to buy if you was doing this to a 1991 camaro t-5 trans
what bell houseing are u using what's it off ?
dose this fit with silverado 2006 auto ? or i need to custom shaft rode and houzing
What about the starter pockets? Is the depth and location right?
I have the nfw1050 flywheel and the stock starter will not line up at all someone help with my dilemma
Just did this on my 57 chevy....Had to put hydro/clutch on if you use the longtube headers
they no longer make this flywheel. i am looking for one that has the same bolt pattern but haven’t had any luck. any idea what flywheel i could use
what size bell housing was he using?
Will this work with an SM465 4 speed?
Will it work on the 3 on the tree 70s
What bellhousing are you using ?
Was clutch for 4.8L also ? I'm putting 6L into 77 Chevy shortbox 4x4 with same transmission that u got .
what about a ford transmission do you know what I would need?
So is that the bearing I need to do a Muncie.
Is this the same for the t5?
Can you provide me the bellhousing part number that you used
hi man was it Sachs flywheel, and clutch,is this good stuf?
I like your engine stand, is it homemade or did you buy it. I worry about the engine rolling.
Grade 8 metric bolts, do you have the exact measurement? I picked up some bolts but they have some play in it as it screws down.
10.9mm?
10.9 is the "grade" for metric bolts. 10.9 is "similar" strength to grade 8
is this swap still holding up?
Top bolt isn't used with the older bell housings. I ran into the same thing with my old core 4l80e conversion on my ls fbody
hey kind of off topic but, didn't you have some videos of a black 57 chevy restoration you were doing maybe 5 years ago? Or did you have a different channel that those videos were on?
What number bell housing
What kind of clutch can I use I have a LS1 Trans Am motor I want to put a NV 3500 Transmission 5 speed manual my buddy said I need to put a flywheel off a 4.8 like you said in this video
Joshua RODRIGUEZ you need the 4.8 clutch kit with the nfw 1050 flywheel currently doing this on a 96 c1500 with 4.3 v6 only thing I don’t know yet is what pilot/throw out bearing to use
what starter are you using??? the 5.3 one you got with the engine? or one from where you sourced the flywheel? or possibly a gen 1 sbc one? something entirely different?
Daniel Doroff It used a 5.3L starter. The flywheel used was from a LS based engine so the teeth count is the same. Any LS engine starter will work, gen 1 sbc will NOT work.
thanks
what would I use for a hydraulic clutch setup? any info would be great thanks!
Missouridualsport Ram Hydraulic 78125HD
So why does have the clutch pads only touch half of the flywheel
Your part # is for a bearing and is different from the bushing you installed . Did I miss something . I have a 99 5.3 when I installed a bearing the spline shaft bottomed out on the bearing about 1/2 inch before the bell housing could mate to the block so I am assuming I need the Bushing ( not bearing) like the one you installed . Do you have that part # ?
+machew74 you have a long crank...you need sachs 1043 flywheeland a standard pilot bushing
a problem i ran into that wasnt brought up on the video
is the clucth fork
which clucth fork did u use?
The one for the oldschool bellhousing
hydraulic clutch?
THE CLUTCH DISC MATERIAL IS WIDER THAN THE FLYWHEEL...FROM OUTER CIRCUMFERENCE TO THE CENTER
hi there
i attend to do the same, as i do not want to cut the floor or modify it, who is fit in the car.
actually the bearing is an 8617 McLeod (or equivalent) and because of the lip it makes up for the .4 inches difference in the crankshaft between the old and some ls engines. It should be pressed in all the way.The other option is the 12557583 roller bearing which presses to the inner lip of the crankshaft and seems to be a better option .Was it my imagination or did he actually press the pilot bearing in all the way later in the video. You have to know what engine you have because some of the Ls motors do not have the .4 inch length difference and if youre a weekend warrior you wil be sad if you have the wrong configration. No nookie tonight.
What about ball for z bar
what about starter and z bar?!?! 79 k10. also the 6.0 ive been told is not.400" shorter like the other ls engines.... do you know what this would mean for my case?
In this case the starter bolts right up but for the Z-Bar you will have to fabricate a bracket that mounts off the bellhousing bolts to pickup your Z bar. As far as the 6.0L goes the only year 6.0's that use the longer crankshaft are the 99-2000 iron head LQ4's. 2001+ 6.0L's all use the shorter crankshaft.
***** thankyou. now im left with a dilema though. i have an ironhead lq4 with that crank that i tore apart for mire twin turbo firebird build and i buying a 03 lq4 next week.... the ironhead needs work as its in pieces. the 03 is low miles and redy to run... should i swap cranks or just go this setup and worry about the shorter crank issue in my bird another time for the t56 magnum i need for that car... that crank wont work for the ls style tranny
VanGui1d3r I would just install the 03 LQ4 as it is already a running engine. It would be a lot of work to try and swap crankshafts and overall not worth it for the different length crank. Just use the flywheel we used to connect to the 4 speed and you should be good to go.
so would this work the same with a 12 inch clutch disk ? doing this swap on my 85 suburban with a 4 speed wanted to know if excisiting clutch would work
Can you tell me what you ended up going with because I am getting all the parts together to LS swap my 87 K5 it has a 4 speed in it as well.
thats an 01-06 flywheel not a 99 -06 the 4.8 from 99-00 is a different flywheel...going thru this problem right now and have spent hrs looking... from what i can tell manual trans 4.8 had a different crank than automatic trucks. in 2001 both manual trans and automatic trans ran the sam crank... use sachs 1050 with an extended pilot bushing or the l12557582 pilot bearing
12557583
well did it work?
see some 4 speed action come on lets go!
I was kind of hoping to see him drive with the LS swap myself...but I don't think it'll ever happen. Booger.
what about attaching it to the Muncie sm465?
Mitchell Garcia would be the same. I used the larger bearing though
@@chevy1985k20 do you have the larger bearing number?
DO you and Mathew work together?....i know he does great work also
Last ? Throw out bearing part number thanks
restomodsak would this also be the same for my sm 465 to a 5.3
Yes
What throwout did you use ? Hydraulic or mechanical ?
Which way did you go? (It's too bad the guy hasn't answered any of the questions)
Has anybody had problems with the T/O bearing pulling out since it's only half-way seated? Also, since it's not seated, how do you drive it in perfectly straight? If it were driven in at a slight angle it would straighten out when it's seated, if that makes sense. Seems like if it's off it would eat the input shaft and cause one hell of a vibration?
pilot bearing not thro-out bearing
wont that old box get smashed? lve smashed T56 boxes with mild power.
People stuffed them behind big blocks. I doubt he will have an issue aslong As he’s not running slicks
Is the transmission a truck or a car
Will this work with the longer crank ls1. To a sm465?
hey will a flywheel from a 1999 4.3 v6 on a 5.3 v8 engine? i want to put a 4 speed saginaw on the 5.3 thanks.
awesome video !!!
NO
And you are getting about 10% clutch engagement. Look how huge that dish is in the center of the flywheel. Look at the diameter of the clutch disc. Only the outer 10% of that disc makes contact with the flywheel. A better choice is an expensive conversion flywheel that gives you full contact of the clutch disc.
The same things you'd need to bolt up an LT1 T56 to an LS1.
dont you have a channel named akman360? just wondering lol
Need help.
Wow you are brave to run that setup in your car? How does that combination work for? Is it safe? Because when I used to run a 4speed in my 55 pickup street racing I would powershift alot but I'd get the win! So let us know how it works out for you in high rpm situations?
+martin750hp It seemed to work out just fine in this car. I took it out to about 5500-6000 rpm a number of times and it didn't seem to have an issue. However I only put about 1500 miles on this setup before I sold this car and purchased a 1957 Bel Air.
Well it does not seem safe but if i was doing the same thing's and it work's? i just might tell someone else that's wanting a 4 speed behind a newer LS block with not too much power, to try this- nice going!
+martin750hp How would it not be safe?
+yamahondarider I did not see that you can use one upper bolt hole on the left thinking just four boltholes on bottom were only the only four bolt holes that could be bolted? miss matched parts would be a dangerous combination, but looking at the video again I did not see that all parts matched up pretty good with one another, so that's why I thought it would be dangerous in high rpm situations and you can probably tap out that other bolt hole (check with your mechanic or engine rebuilder on this) to see if that's possible and safe because four speed belhousings stock like this one are a weak link on scatter shields ID be more at ease because when it comes to high RPMs you never know what will come apart but max 6000+ rpms pretty safe I believe but a scatter shield much safer. I don't like to skimp on safety especially stick shift cars and racing you can never be to safe when street racing or track racing always use tork specs and be safe and the right equipment, now you know why I did not think at first it would be safe!!! But nice video!!!
Safety's for the armchair racers who've never planted their foot and loosed the power of a big block down a drag strip! :-P :-)
QUESTION , WHY CAN'T YOU JUST USE AN LS7 CLUTCH
The MultiChannel 87 different spline
Yeah, they're the same guys... Matthew20061 is another.
