    T5 vs T56 vs NV3500 2wd
    SM465 vs NV4500 vs ZF6 4wd
    Update: shifter position matches on all my full-size truck transmissions. However, most SM465s had the shifter a couple inches further forward. Mine is the GMT400 style 88-91 with the aluminum top plate.
    Info on the bell housings, input shafts, output shafts, clutch and flywheel combinations, release bearings, slave cylinders
    4spd vs 5spd vs 6spd
    How to make an old v6 or SBC or BBC transmission fit an LS engine LR4 LM7 LQ4 LQ9
    My 4.8 Beretta swap is getting an LS T56 and my 5.3 Blazer swap is getting an SBC SM465

    Very very good video..and very helpful for me..made me realize how many different ones there are to choose from.. I've been using the nv3500 behide 350's in 40 & 50's rat rod cars and everything has been super easy to make it work perfectly.. the shifter location lands in a good spot..and I use S10/Silverado fluid reservoirs ..and truck pilot bearing

    Hey GH Dezign, This is really great info! Thank you for going to the effort and sharing your knowledge here. Just a couple of things; There is no way the SM465 (CH-465) has the same shifter to bell-housing (face / back of engine) measurement as a NV4500 or ZF6 S6-650. I have a ZF6 S6-650 sitting in my garage waiting to go into my 89 1ton square-body dually. It is 15.75” as you say. I do not have a SM465 here to measure up; it must be a lot less through looking at the factory cutout impression in the truck’s transmission tunnel. I don’t have a NV4500 here either. If it is the same measurement as the ZF6 S6-650, that’s good to know and a help for this swap. 2nd thing and you may be just the man to ask this. I am mounting the ZF6 S6-650 to the original TBI 454 L19 (IV Mark 4, 2 PC seal). What flywheel pilot gearing and clutch Assy do I need? What I do know; the trans input shaft is 10 spline Ø1.375”and I will have to use a concentric slave cylinder. That’s about it. Thanks for your help! Cheers, Grant.

    • @GEARHEADdezign
      @GEARHEADdezign  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I finally had a chance to measure my sm465, and we're both right actually. Good catch! Mine is 15.75, but it's different than most of the ones I see online. Mine came from an early GMT400, and the shifter tower is offset to the rear. Photos I see online (presumably from square body trucks) the shift tower looks basically centered.
      So I'll put a note in the description specifying this.

    I have a 2004 4.8 4wd silverado with the nv3500. my goal is to build something of a sport truck. My main issue is the NV3500 just feels choppy. I'm not sure if maybe the shift tower is bad or what but it has little play in the shifter and the truck only has 62,000 on it. really I'm just looking for a smooth shifting manual 4x4 so if you think a nv3500 is a smooth transmission I will look more into the issues unless you suggest something else. I've also heard the t56 can be adapted to be 4x4 but it was stated it doesn't hold up well with the weight of the truck. Any advice is appreciated and awesome video!

    A lot of great info here, thanks! I am about to swap an LS style T-56 behind a one piece RMS Chevy 350 and have heard mixed reviews on what pilot bushing to use. I purchased spacers that go between the bell housing and front plate of the transmission to fix the long input stick out, just wondering if you have any experience with this. Also, do you know for sure if an LS T-56 clutch will bolt to the old school SBC flywheel? Thanks!

    • @GEARHEADdezign
      @GEARHEADdezign  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A friend of mine has done that exact swap, you use the SBC pilot. The LS clutch will bolt on a big SBC/BBC 168 tooth flywheel, but not the 153 tooth. Just use the SBC clutch that matches your flywheel though. No need to change style

    • @GEARHEADdezign
      @GEARHEADdezign  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I haven't looked into that. But I do know that the tail shafts are prone to breaking, so just a 4wd tail shaft will be close to the price of a whole 4wd trans...

    Hey I just stumbled across this video and it was super helpful. I do have a few questions though. I currently have a 1996 6.5l td bolted to a sm465 to a np205. The starter is interfering with the flywheel. What flywheel should I be using with this setup? Also I am interested in swapping in a nv4500 at some point and I wanted to know how much work that would be to convert? Do I need any adapter plates? Thanks!

    • @GEARHEADdezign
      @GEARHEADdezign  ปีที่แล้ว

      I would assume you want to use the flywheel that's original to the engine. Those 6.5s got the nv4500 from the factory, and it should be able to use the same clutch as sm465.

    • @GEARHEADdezign
      @GEARHEADdezign  ปีที่แล้ว

      Depending on the year of your sm465, it might be basically a direct swap. Mine came out of an early gmt400 and the measurements appear to be a direct swap with a 90s nv4500. Earlier square body 465s had the shifter further forward, and I'm not sure about the tcase adapter measurements

    • @GEARHEADdezign
      @GEARHEADdezign  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can tell if it's a square or gmt400 trans by the shift cover. Squares had a cast iron cover with the shifter mostly centered. Gmt400s have an alum cover with the shifter offset to the rear

    2003 4.8 nv3500 trans with manual tcase to a 2005 5.3 and a push button tcase. (Was a 4l60e) looking at swapping my L60 out for the 5spd and still use my tcase that has a push button. I’m wanting to know if the splines are the same between the two. Both trucks are 1/2 tons. Haven’t yet pulled them apart to look and was trying to take some steps saving wait time on parts if they can or can’t bolt up. Thanks

    • @GEARHEADdezign

    I am curious if this also applies to gen 4 ls stuff? I have a 2014 2500hd with the 6.0 (l96), I would love to put a zf6 in there when the 6l90 goes. It’s a bummer I can’t use the tcase that’s in there. But a earlier ls flywheel and pilot bearing would work?

    I have an 02 3/4 ton truck with the floor shift tcase and the 4l80e. The 4l80e is great but my first truck was a manual with the sm420 which I eventually swapped to a world class t5. I miss a stick shift but the one really good option seems to be the zf6 and they're damn near impossible to find

    • @GEARHEADdezign

      ZF won't fit your tcase, but the nv4500 will bolt right in. That's the route I'd go in your shoes, and that's what the factory 6.0 manuals were.

    The k1500 4x4 trucks had nv3500's in them with an external slave. Some call them a getrag, but in all truth and actuality, they're still a nv3500. 99 and 2000 1st gen nbs trucks used an nv3500 with the 4.8-5.3 trucks as well. Very rare to find though.

Do i really have to get a big block chevy bell housing, cause i've heard the stock bell housing from the t5 should work, but that only 1 bolt hole won't get used. If i do need a different bell housing, i have a bell housing off a 65 C20 327 with a 4 speed. Do you think that might work? I honestly want to mate them together as cheap as possible. Would you be able to guide me as to what i'll need as far as the flywheel, clutch, pressure plate, slave cylinder, and bearings?? Thank you in advance. Btw the 5.3 and t5 are planning to go into that 65 chevy of mine lol

    • @GEARHEADdezign
      @GEARHEADdezign  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The bell housing pattern is fine, but it's the flywheel that's the issue. I think the t5 bell is set up for smaller 153 tooth flywheel, where LS needs the bigger 168 tooth style. BBC always came with the 168, but some SBC trucks etc did get the 168 also. So try out the c20 one.
      Use a 2002 4.8 flywheel and a 2002 Camaro clutch. If the c20 bell doesn't fit, grab a BBC bell.

I picked up the trans, flywheel, and clutch dirt cheap, but it's still in the parts bin waiting for the answer...I refuse to use the pull clutch and want to use an internal hydraulic throwout. Are aftermarket parts the solution?
    Edit: This would used with either a 2 piece or 1 piece rear seal, I've got both. The LT1 flywheel I believe is the same balance as a Vortec 5.7 1996-2002.

    I really want to manual swap my sbc (about 350hp) s10. kinda lost in the info. trying to keep a budget. I was thinking of converting a mustang T5 but should I just get a gm t5? what about a s10 NV3500. I dunno. T56 prices are stupid

      For that power level nv3500 should be fine and the swap will be cake

    I have a 1998 C1500 4.3L with a NV3500. I need to replace the clutch (all components). It appears the transmission can be separated from the bell housing, am I correct? Or, should I drop the transmission and bell housing as one unit? Any info on how tall the bell housing is? Kinda worried about being able to get the truck up in the air enough to have enough clearance to get it from under the truck? Thanks for any info.

      I don't think that year nv3500 had a bell housing, it's all one piece, so you don't have an option.

      Height is just standard SBC bell height

    I hv a question iam about 2 do a engine & tranny swap into a 96 s-10 iam putting a 2000 ls1 and t56 tranny in my questin is will my tans shifter come out in the same hole as my 2.2 four banger and the i belive is the nv 1500 tranny my name is steve.

      The nv1500 shifter comes out the same place as the s10 nv3500. I have measurements in the video, but I'm quite sure the t56 is still rearward of the s10 hole. I have the opposite issue with the sm465 going in mine, where the shifter will be forward of the hole

      I put one in my last truck and I was happy with it. Shifts like a truck, but it's sturdy and has a nice crawler gear.

    any reason why someone would put a T5 behind a LS? Headers and 10.5" tires will have youll be replacing it in no time

    how hard would it be to put a first gen duramax in front of an SM465? i have a one ton square body with a mediocre BBC in it and an sm465 behind it. Also, is it reasonably simple to swap a 2wd sm465 to a 4x4? thanks

    • @GEARHEADdezign
      @GEARHEADdezign  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I know the zf6 behind 8.1 and dmax is the same, so that means the 465 should swap easy. I don't know about the 2wd to 4wd swap, but 4wd trans are a dime a dozen

      @@GEARHEADdezign Thanks, I appreciate the insight. Does this mean i could probably get away with the zf6 clutch and flywheel?
