      Whats the difference between proxies and optimized media?

    • @DavidBattistella
      @DavidBattistella 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@uehal proxies are much less taxing on the system overall, playback smoothly and are lower bandwidth files for editing larger projects. Ie features and long form documentaries. Sometimes with hundreds of hours of footage proxy files (with the same name and TimeCode as the original but a different extension. Allow also for work over SANs or frameIO online remote workflows

      @@uehal Proxies are for complete media clips and choice of storage location. Useful in the editing phase. With optimized media you can choose complete media clips or only optimize used media in the timeline which is much less data to store in the Cacheclips folder. Useful for the grading phase when you need higher quality. Together with the original media all three options can be switched back and forth and used for render cache.

      Well there certainly seems to be a few ideas from FCP that have "crept into" Resolve 17. And before you say it, i know they all do that to a certain extent. I doubt the Cut Page would be there if it wasn't for FCP. But as I have it already, and am not a professional user, there's little incentive for me to have to learn a whole new application.
      But Kudos to BM for pushing forward with this, and certainly for giving so much away for nothing. They could easily have charged, say 39 dollars/pounds/Euros for the basic version, and it would still be outstanding value for money!

    What's the difference between optimized media and proxy media?

      @rikstation 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The choice of quality and codecs for optimise your machine performance

    • @siewer
      @siewer 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Both are for optimizing performance while editing. The "proxy media" is for teams, if they work together on a project. You can easy exchange the whole project over cloud services with smaller file sizes. The "optimized media" is there for a long time and speeds up the editing on a single machine. New is the feature to use the OM for all projects where the clips are used.

    I'm confused with the new "Generate Proxy Media" option. When would I use that instead "Generate Optimized Media"? What's the practical difference between these two generated "proxies"? Just the fact that you can specify the destination folder and location flexibility? I'm sure they could have just as easily added that to the "Optimized Media" workflow. I've been using the "Generate Optimized Media" feature for the same purpose shown here.

    • @rippleguys
      @rippleguys  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Proxy media is small footprint media down to 1/8 the size of the original to allow user to maximize drive space. Performance and quality is secondary concern. Optimized is for codecs that tax the system during playback. A good example is HEVC clips shot with a GoPro or a Sony a7s3 - those clips need to be optimized for playback on slower machines.

    • @ikestrom
      @ikestrom 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rippleguys Thanks for the reply. I get that in principle, but Optimized Media can achieve the same effect. In DR 16 I can pick the size of Optimized Media down to one-sixteenth the original and any codec available. I'm just struggling to imagine when I would use both Optimized Media AND Proxy Media in the same timeline (with different codecs and sizes) and why/when I would switch between them. I feel they could have enhanced the existing Optimized Media feature instead, to support user-defined destinations.

    • @rippleguys
      @rippleguys  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ikestrom With proxies you can choose H.264 - not just the frame size. Optimized only lets you choose ProRes or DNxHR - Even at 1/16, the size will be considerably larger.

    • @ikestrom
      @ikestrom 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rippleguys OK. But isn't that something they could have also added to the Optimized Media feature as well? I know the implementations are different (OM renders to individual frames and PM renders video files), but I don't see how that ultimately matters to the user. Now we're left with two mostly redundant features that require separate documentation, training, and probably a bunch of questions about when to use which from people like me :) I'm not trying to be argumentative here, but I still haven't found a compelling reason for having two almost identical features/workflows when one could provide all the functionality with a simpler user experience. But I respect the BMD team and I assume there's a good reason for doing it this way. I just haven't found it yet :)

    • @willemnagtglas4569
      @willemnagtglas4569 3 ปีที่แล้ว
