- I always receive this greeting from beginner Chinese Language learners. However, it is so wrong! Let's learn how to greet properly.

"ma" is a question partial
1:30 side note for anyone watching: when you're pronouncing 你 alone, you should be emphasizing that third tone. but when it comes before *another* character with a third tone (like 好), then it becomes a rising tone, like at 1:42.
this doesn't just happen with 你 as well, whenever you see '3-3' you should pronounce it as '2-3'.

Here in México the questions "how are you?" and "how are you lately?" are used as a greeting but it is not weird to have someone telling you how really they have been.
From a small "not doing great" chat with a street vendor to a full summary with a friend. People that really don't care about a full answer won't use the sentence as a greeting and just avoid it. That's why some mexicans struggle to understand why "你好吗? is not common, as is the most normal way to start a conversation for us.

My Mandarin teacher was from Beijing, majored in Mandarin at Peking University/Beida, and she taught us "Ni hao" was used when greeting someone for the first time you meet them or for someone you don't know well or in formal situations but when you know someone well or are close to someone you use "Ni hao ma?" as it it's more casual and is a sign of closeness between people. Considering my teacher was very proper and formal, nor warm and fuzzy, I took her lesson as that goddess had spoken. But if you want to make me stay after class for some private instruction to try to make me change my mind I'm open to it 😉

And thank you for talking about interjection words! I didn't even know what those kinds of words were called in English as we don't have interjection words in my first language, so I couldn't even Google it to find out more about it, but now I can! It is so great that you also talk about slang, viral phrases, interjection words, speaking habit etc. Textbooks treat languages as if they were this static, dead thing. Languages evolve faster than ever.

Eddie, the question 你在哪个城市 I don’t think it’s exactly which city u r living in, because living is more like 住在，so if it’s only 在 I’d assume it’s more like staying at, being at. Please correct me if I’m wrong 😁
you are right if we have to tell the difference. But normally people wouldn't really think about the grammar differences here in daily conversations. So 你在哪个城市 could imply both meanings:)

I’m confused. I thought “你在哪个城市” meant “which city are you in (right now)?”. I thought it was asking for your location. Wouldn’t you say “你住在哪个城市” for “which city do you live in”.
Ruthie the Magma Cube when we are chatting and asking 你在哪个城市，we automatically understand it as which city do you live in? you got a very good point tho cuz technically 住 indeed means to live in. But just like every language, ppl sometimes are just casual and don’t think too much cuz we take things for granted due to our speaking habit.
I thought that there was this grammatical rule on which when two words have both the third tone, the first word is pronounced as it had the second tone. Is it correct?
