After Jarvi I can hardly listen to anyone else's Beethoven. He brings out the raw cosmic lightning and vast view of Beethoven like nobody else, showing us anew why LVB is the very pinnacle of music--as Beethoven said, "Music is a higher revelation than all of philosophy." We hear that here. Total clarity, total energy, godlike humour, and utter self-transcending profundity. Tears if wonder and gratitude well up whenever I listen to Jarvi's Beethoven.
I have this whole set and it is my go to set. What other performance have you heard the piccolos so prominent in the last mvmnt.? Search on YT for a 12 minute explanation of the 5th (1st mvmnt) by Bernstein, that also includes discarded sketches that he threw away. But Lenny places them in the 1st movement for you to hear why LVB discarded them. Also anything by Gerard Schwarze where he explains most of the symphonies at length. And now a blast from the past! th-cam.com/video/JXtbCVf6hU0/w-d-xo.html
Too true! Though you should also check out the 9'th performed at the Proms 2017, if anything can compare with Jarvi's rendition it's that one (although Oslo with that brilliant young (24 years old) conductor (who is, at 24, performing my favorite music of all time, i'm totally not jealous tho!) is very good too! The 7'th done by "Iván Fischer | Concertgebouworkest" is very good too! Also, hr-Sinfonieorchester ∙ Andrés Orozco-Estrada does all the symphonies very well. Still hard to say any of them beats Jarvi! He's communicating so much with the musicians, you can see he and they have a very tight bond of skill!
I love watching him conduct. He's so expressive towards the orchestra, and just gives the impression he's really really enjoying it. This shows in everything I've seen him conduct.
Too true! Not to be mean, but a lot of conductors (looking at you Barenboin or however it's spelled) seem to be almost on autopilot giving little information to the players, but Jarvi has every note for every player on his mind (you can even compare how he vs others use the baton, Jarvi's seems to be expressing every little twist of the piece!
I sit here with tears streaming down my face (with glass of wine in hand)... Can't do that at a live concert. One of the most spell bindingly authentic performances of the 5th I have ever witnessed. Jarvi really "Get's it", in ways that others seem to completely miss by comparison. He really "owns it" and yet is gives a very sympathetic treatment of the light passages... Are we not so lucky (as apes with tools and suits) that we have a Beethoven a Jarvi and incredible musicians that have made it their life's work to really "bring it"... We "lucky few"... [This is the first time I have seen Jarvi, but to some I guess he is a household name... will endeavor to learn more ]. Some of the best camera work and editing of an orchestral performance I have ever seen.
Not only. He demands the utmost from himself, from each individual musician in the orchestra and from the orchestra as a whole. And he gets it - perhaps even more than that.
What a spectacular reading of this famous Beethoven symphony. I'll be 72 in 2 months, that makes almost 70 years of listening to this piece. I received the Toscanini/NBC Orch recording for my 2nd birthday. After watching this video, it's almost like hearing this music again, but for the first time. Thank you Maestro and this marvelous orchestra.
I really love Jarvi's vision about Beethoven and not only.He always bring out thinks I never heard before. He takes out from score thinks I never thought about.... Great lesson of music for me ( I think for all of us) Orchestra is fantastic as well..THANK YOU
I really love this conductor. His cues are easy to follow and right on the money. Other conductors I have seen have their own interpretation of cues which sometimes leads to miscues with the orchestra. This maestro is dead-on.
I like this compact and at the same time exciting performance with fastest possible tempi. Paavo Järvi is definitely one of the five most excellent conductors of today's Europe.
That's a great performance. The emotional power of this symphony enlightened me over 45 years ago, and I still find it mind-blowingly exhilarating. Beethoven was the consumate genius, whose music is immortal. As with all great art, mankind can enjoy this priceless gift for all time.
Splendid, if not the best performance of Beethoven,s 5th. Paavo brings Beethoven,s energy to the orquestra, keeping it bright all along the simphony. The best we classic lovers have in youtube.
Guillermarle+ What a majestic performance! This Kammerfhilarmonie is one of the best balanced orchestras I´ve ever heard. What energy, what a grandeur inspiring conductor Paavo Jarvi is. A fifth to remember!
When Beethoven deliverd this symphony for the fist performance, the players said it was impossible to play at this pace. Beethoven replied. I didn’t write it for you it’s for future generations to play ,finally we get near to his dreams.
Mir gefällt diese kompakte und zugleich spannende Aufführung mit möglichst schnellen Tempi. Paavo Järvi ist bestimmt einer der fünf ausgezeichnetesten Dirigenten heutiges Europas!
OH, WOW! What a performance!! Jarvi is at the top of Beethoven's symphonies interpretation. Never ceases to amaze me how he finishes the phrasing at about 3 seconds after 18:23, I've never heard it that way, and that's TRUE Beethoven! Well done, Paavo!
How I would love to go back in time to get the master, bring him to how and let him see, not only is his music still played, but how close to his vision we are now.
I really enjoy the clarity of the smaller ensemble. That more than makes up for the lack of total power, especially when you can listen at home and crank it up as much as you want. This is one of my new top favorites!
This is the nearest to Beethoven’s intention. A fantastic rendition of this symphony. Considering the same four notes brought us this , and the mighty forth piano. Wow, what a genius
I grew up with performances of Beethoven's symphonies that were enhanced, if you will, as anticipations of Bruckner and Mahler, with all the grandeur, extreme drama--and bathos--of late Romanticism. As much as later composers channeled Beethoven, he also channeled what came before. Performances like this make me hear Beethoven as a continuation of antecedents (especially Haydn's Opus 50 F# minor quartet and the slow movement of Symphony No. 103)--but also as a departure from them. That's one reason why this Beethoven sounds more radical than a version closer to the idiom of the late 19th century.
the mid to late 20th century practice, over expending every aspects, to a very extreme extend. super slow tempo, super heavy, super personal, super large orchestra. I always wonder why, is it because of all those crazy anti human events and the great wars that people were living in such an atmosphere and needed that to compensate? From a musical aspect, is it very simple to understand that it is better to perform beethoven with how it should be (i.e. a 50-person orchestra). Because beethoven wrote for a 50-person orchestra, so there are many unique and important counterpoints on each individual parts. Because each individual part is supposed to be able to make an impact to the music. If you play it with a big orchestra, you cant hear the clarinet playing its interesting counterpoint, but with a 50-person orchestra, you can.
Excelente!!! , es la primera vez que veo y escucho un director presente en la ejecución , y al mismo tiempo invisible en la composición, la música parece fluir desde lo profundo de Beethoven hacia quien la escucha y siente, es algo completamente emocional y mágico!!!
I like the fact that although this is a modern orchestra, he uses natural (valve-less) trumpets. The nature of natural trumpets compared with modern trumpets adds greatly to the dramatic tension - Harnoncourt said something along the lines of natural trumpets producing a driving force without overpowering volume, and if you were to have modern trumpets produce the same drive, they would have to play too loud (basically it needs to be at the top of their dynamic range)
if you notice, all of the rythmic section are played on period instruments (small timpani, natural trumpets and gut strings double basses) and that is the main key of why this recordings are so unique
By the grace of God, or some eternal spirit, is it possible for genius spirits like Beethoven to ascertain our love, respect , and spiritual awakening and be aware of the uplifting presence his music takes us to a heavenly place .
I must see one of these live... Its like the music exists on another plain. ... there is a kind of immensity about the sound..... Like it could be heard from outer space...
best andante CON MOTO, go paavo. what a fucking boss. he was the conductor of my city's symphony (CSO) for many years, but I was always too young to appreciate him.
This has to be closest to what the maestro intended. The metronome markings say this is the speed. Beethoven wrote for this interpretation, finally after all this time a conductor and orchestra can achieve his vision. Absolutely wonderful
This is a great performance. If I had a son or a daughter who wanted to be a conductor, or even a composer, I would say - listen to the moment where the clarinet begins a beatific phrase, replied to by the rest, at 9:05-9:48 , then listen to another moment where the woodwinds decide to break into a relative and unexpected silence, again replied to by the rest, at 14:39-15:07 ---- that, my friends - the beautiful path of musical sounds - is the ART OF MUSIC
I believe that the very soul, emotion and motion expressed in this symphony (as well as in other great pieces of music) is the explanation and reason of life. This is beyond humanity; paradoxically, it was a human who composed this.
Yes - is hard! Only people who had studied Beethoven a life long like Karajan or Furtwängler - have a chance to play Beethoven exactly! Beethoven is ten time faster and mor exactly than the others and you need all your energy! There are only very few people and orchestras in the world that can Beethoven - but they pay all a high price!
There’s only one Beethoven Thank God writing music is the only thing he knew what to do. He writes music that strikes fire in the heart of a man and put tears in the eyes of a woman. Tones sound, and roar and storm about me until I have set them down in notes. Ludwig van Beethoven
I beleive that this symphony is faster than it was played live, i listened to it on 0.75x and their physicals movement made sense. However, the tempo when it’s faster is much much better
Deepnosepicker, i want this same symphony with the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen & Paavo Järvi live in Bremen (Germany) on April 2nd 2008 at the President's Benefit Concert.
No one does a Beethoven like Jarvi. He never disappoints. This is spectacular.
After Jarvi I can hardly listen to anyone else's Beethoven. tears OF wonder, that is. :)

I agree totally!!!!!!
Paavo Jarvi is my favourite conductor along with Edward Gardner

I love watching him conduct. He's so expressive towards the orchestra, and just gives the impression he's really really enjoying it. This shows in everything I've seen him conduct.
Couldn't agree more. There are too many nuances to name...but the orchestra is outstanding...
The articulation of the SHORT notes he wants is him showing it...it's a completely brilliant Beethoven cycle...drastic difference and it's sublime.

Fully agree, same here, tears, wine, applause....Beethoven is SPELLBINDING. His FEELINGS! Anointed!
The transition from the third to fourth movement is miraculous.
It is with such Perfection and rhythm lovely ❤️
Not only. He demands the utmost from himself, from each individual musician in the orchestra and from the orchestra as a whole. And he gets it - perhaps even more than that.

You
his version is the most faithful to Beethoven
The third tempo has a espectacular cinematographics moments Järvi's performance is the best that i've never hear
IMHO, Jarvi is the best conductor of Beethoven's symphonies.
His interpretation is far beyond the that "old same" ones.
In fact, I have the same also with his interpretations of Szostakowicz's symphonies.
I really love this conductor. His cues are easy to follow and right on the money. Other conductors I have seen have their own interpretation of cues which sometimes leads to miscues with the orchestra. This maestro is dead-on.
I'm only about 10 minutes in, but I absolutely love this performance already. The woodwinds particularly are so prominent and full of rich sound.
Agreed. Superb clarinet and bassoon players.
Maestro Järvi + DKB. Best Combo around here for Beethoven.
I like this compact and at the same time exciting performance with fastest possible tempi. Paavo Järvi is definitely one of the five most excellent conductors of today's Europe.
The other four include at least Markus Stenz. Any objection?
notaire2 it
That's a great performance. The emotional power of this symphony enlightened me over 45 years ago, and I still find it mind-blowingly exhilarating. Beethoven was the consumate genius, whose music is immortal. As with all great art, mankind can enjoy this priceless gift for all time.
PERFECT! This is THE best performance of the the 5th - EVER!
You've heard them all, right?
Too fast
So ist's richtig - endlich einmal ohne das ewige "Schicksals-Pathos", hell und lebhaft im Tempo, dabei äußerst präzise - bravo Ihr Kammerphilharmoniker, bravo Paavo!
music of a genius. a true gift to humankind.

Splendid, if not the best performance of Beethoven,s 5th. Paavo brings Beethoven,s energy to the orquestra, keeping it bright all along the simphony. The best we classic lovers have in youtube.
A great performance, but also beautifully shot with many close-ups of musicians and their playing. Bravo!!!
Guillermarle+ What a majestic performance! This Kammerfhilarmonie is one of the best balanced orchestras I´ve ever heard. What energy, what a grandeur inspiring conductor Paavo Jarvi is. A fifth to remember!

im a twenty something year old irish drug addict and im not afraid 2 say i love this tune
God bless you mate, you're human, like everyone here.

Such an exciting version! I'm glad I came across this version by Mr Jarvi. Thanks for sharing, and for making the list with the complete cycle.
We should have the possibility to give more likes! ;)

Ludwig would be proud of this performance.

By the grace of God, or some eternal spirit, is it possible for genius spirits like Beethoven to ascertain our love, respect , and spiritual awakening and be aware of the uplifting presence his music takes us to a heavenly place .
I am sure Beethoven would of loved that.He WAS the master of syncopation.
Conductor Jarvi is a maestro , his performance of Beethoven's fifth is a tour de force.
Amazing! Congratulations from Brazil to all involved in this beautiful performance!
Double Base and Cello awesomeness at 17:38! I love it!
Cello audition excerpts
II. Andante con moto :
n.1 7:20
n.2 9:04
N.3 & 4 10:40
III. 15:57 Allegro (cello excerpt)r
Without a doubt the best performance of the 5th ever. In the style of Furtwangler see his 1947 performance.
Paavo Järvi and DKB, Best Beethoven ever
I must see one of these live... Its like the music exists on another plain. ... there is a kind of immensity about the sound..... Like it could be heard from outer space...
järvi's beethoven is the best of the best
Jarvi and his orchestra are having too much fun!!! Who needs coffee after the 4th movement! 8|
Quickly becoming one of my favorite symphonies. Bravissimo!
5:50-6:50!!! gives me goosebumps
best andante CON MOTO, go paavo. what a fucking boss. he was the conductor of my city's symphony (CSO) for many years, but I was always too young to appreciate him.
His exquisite conducting is clear and brings out the wonderful craftsmanship of talented performers
I couldn't agree more, probably my favorite portion of any music ever.
This has to be closest to what the maestro intended. The metronome markings say this is the speed. Beethoven wrote for this interpretation, finally after all this time a conductor and orchestra can achieve his vision. Absolutely wonderful
Outstanding conductor. He knows how to draw out the orchestra.
Great conductor, awesome orchestra, fantastic symphony.
You are absolutely right! That part is one of the most powerful pieces of music... ever!
Thank you very much for posting this gift to us. It was a beautifully transparent and spirited performance!
0:07 Allegro con brio
7:18 Andante con moto
15:52 Scherzo Allegro
20:38 Allegro
the energy is incredible!
カメラアングル、編集が最高レベル!
Beethoven would be proud of this performance
He would be ecstatic!
i d like to see more of the brass player’ faces . Overall this is a fascinating exhibition of orchestral performance!
Iterpretazione FANTASTICA.....emergono particolari che raramente vengono sottolineati.
Super version...a lot of energy
Это - вершина мировой симфонической музыки!
My 3yr old son loves this rendition
Tempo! Perfect tempo! Thanks Maestro Jarvi.
How can TH-cam allow an advertisement to be inserted into the last minute of this masterpiece of symphonic writing. Contemptuous. I cant believe it.
I believe that the very soul, emotion and motion expressed in this symphony (as well as in other great pieces of music) is the explanation and reason of life. This is beyond humanity; paradoxically, it was a human who composed this.
Some of the best Beethoven I've ever heard
The last few minutes of Allegro Con Brio (the first movement) never ceases to make the hairs on my arms stand straight up ...
The piccolo figures in the coda.....did Beethoven filch them from Mozart's die Zauberflote?
With your permission, I will put the video on my phone
Yes - is hard! Only people who had studied Beethoven a life long like Karajan or Furtwängler - have a chance to play Beethoven exactly! Beethoven is ten time faster and mor exactly than the others and you need all your energy! There are only very few people and orchestras in the world that can Beethoven - but they pay all a high price!
+Ralf Rath this one is one of my favorite versions so far. If you have a recommendation please share!
I agree fully.....You have to be on the ball to follow this man!
There’s only one Beethoven
Thank God writing music is the only thing he knew what to do.
He writes music that strikes fire in the heart of a man and put tears in the eyes of a woman.
Tones sound, and roar and storm about me until I have set them down in notes.
Ludwig van Beethoven
he controls the dynamics wonderfully, i could hear the contrabassoon...coda, coda, coda...
Finally, 5th performed in 108 bpm !
I beleive that this symphony is faster than it was played live, i listened to it on 0.75x and their physicals movement made sense. However, the tempo when it’s faster is much much better
FANTASTIC!
Bravo!
Makes subtle transitions work
Happy Birthday, Herr Beethoven!
not a word about the music, only some idiotic comment about imaginary resemblance. way to go! you're deep, man.
Amazing
na endlich einer der Beethoven gescheit dirigiert
Simply Awesome ❤️
정말 힘차고 웅장한 교향곡입니다.
Details, details, effortless details....
Deepnosepicker, i want this same symphony with the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen & Paavo Järvi live in Bremen (Germany) on April 2nd 2008 at the President's Benefit Concert.
Black double bass rocks💥
18:26 That hemiola tho
To the point! Fantastic!
4:25 ...and that heartbreaking oboe
9:05 ; 9:47 Boehm clarinet !
Just exciting!! That's good and enough!!
The best beethoven 5
Awesome tempo
Got to be108bpm
Brings out the ferocity : war. Revolution.
EXCITING!!!!!
È adorabile questa musica
Great performance- and the commercial breaks in mid-movement suck.... but only a minimal disruption... 👍
j'adore cette musique
¡maravilloso, la vida misma!
