My favorite interpretation of the Eroica. Jarvi is just about the only conductor I've found on TH-cam who gives the piece the brisk tempi that I think are crucial in order to convey the energy and urgency of the piece. ESPECIALLY in the glorious third movement - I find I'm no longer satisfied unless the third movement is played at least this tempo. Absolutely phenomenal.
Charles Cornner Yes, but overall, the music has to be fast enough to bring out all of Beethoven’s what I call (random brilliance) where you never know what’s next.
he has a sense of tempo for each movement and not just here, see his recording of Saint-Saens organ symphony...a marvelous interpretation of that work.
I’ve never been able to decide if I like this more than Beethoven’s 6th or 7th and that’s okay because I have time to listen to all of them every day. I’m so glad.
Love Beethoven
jarvi know every note, who is supposed to be playing that note, and looks directly at each and every musician as he conducts. that kind of attention to and respect for your musicians will produce a stellar performance almost every time.
I agree with the other comments about this performance and he lets the musicians play naturally, not forced which maybe Beethoven intended it to be. Bravo again!!
Thank you so much for uploading these Beethoven symphonies, as directed by Jarvi, and performed by DKB! These are among the finest works of music ever written, and they are played wonderfully here. Un grand merci!
It's floating in outer space...how on earth haven't people realized this is out of this world yet? The whole cycle, yes! But even #3 alone...the second mov is outrageously brilliant. The tempo...the timpani...the whole damn thing!!!!! I liken Jarvi as the newer Kleiber. Both just "get it" and his skills in conveying to the orchestra are similar. Forever grateful 🙏
Crazy good interpretation obviously. Might even be the best. But the production values of the video itself is also very impressive. I don't think I've ever seen a symphony shot on film this well. Perfect (and musically informed) close-ups. Just enough conductor shots. Incredible work.
This symphony was first performed in Vienna around 1804 in a small room in front of noble dignitaries. Joseph Haydn heard about the casual premier of this symphony and arrived just as the 4th movement was beginning. He knew right away that Beethovan's style was different and unique. He didn't necessarily like it and actually called it "quite noisy", but he knew that the time had come for change and evolution of orchestral music and he accepted it. He stated that "from this day forward, marks a new beginning".
David Lis exactly! I watched that, and they were amazing actors. They really gave an idea to what the real first rehearsal was like in real life. Now of course in all Beethoven movies everything that happens is stuff that really happened when he was alive so they are very realistic.
Bellissimo!
I often get emotionally overwhelmed by the intensity of the development section. It is almost like Beethoven captured God holding man accountable and thus pointing out the incredible suffering of humanity by the hands of mankind and demanding an answer.
I'd love to hear this crew doing the other 8. The winds sound good, and so does the brass. It wants a bit of weight in the bass, but it is so difficult to convey the parts well in this format. The work done here is quite respectable. Damn, that recap in the first movement, and that coda, what an astounding work of art! Bravo!!
How it must be difficult to rethink and refresh the 200-year old Holy Graal of classical music. But Mr. Jarvi did it! I hear vastness of intellect in every phrase. Some decisions may sound even too alternative but overall it is a master's touch. Simply splendid.
The story of Beethoven tearing up the dedication to Napoleon Bonaparte in a rage upon learning that he had crowned himself Emperor may well be apocryphal, but it is clear that Beethoven never forgave Napoleon for doing it; though a more astute political observer might have noted that the French state over which the latter had presided for the previous five years was a republic in name only. Beethoven wouldn't have been the first or last man to have turned a blind eye to a supposed hero's failings until they could no longer be ignored. I've long imagined that the funeral march in the second movement was for Napoleon himself.
Is that story apocryphal though? We still have the manuscript, which has a hole on the page where Napoleon's name was, because the composer's pen went through the paper as he was scribbling it out. Seems like some pretty ferocious scribbling.
My favorite Beethoven symphony! Genius masterpiece! I think, It's final - 4 part is the most nice work for orchestra!)) I like exactly this performance! Very good interpretation!
Buena orquesta. Gracias por compartir este vídeo.
Beethoven Symphony's No. 3, "Eroica" is beautiful. The instruments were skillfully played and the conductor was quite passionate. I didn't think that I would like Beethoven, but I was impressed. It is very relaxing and delightful. Bravo Beethoven!
Yes, yes, yes! Been looking hard for a video featuring the horn-call in the third movement so I can use it for a lecture on the instruments on the orchestra, and this, only this, has the daring energy and excitement and joy that I have been craving! Anything less feels like an offense to Beethoven's music.
I really like his interpretation, the second movement was a little to fast for my taste, but i love how he modernized the trumpet line a bit that really stuck out to me.
No. It is not twice that. It's a three quarter beat and Beethoven asks for exactly that tempo. One beat per bar, 60 per minute. So every bar takes a second. And this is exactly what Järvi is conducting.
RayReegs I know right! It’s just amazing how all of this was thought all up in Beethoven’s head! I take composing lessons and 8 have some really big pieces like this is mind for my future compositions!
fun little detail. I just watched Last Action Hero again and in the scene where Jack Slater's second cousin dies the main motif of the funeral march is quoted in the score
Completely agree. This is still a very good performance, but it lacks the intensity of the earlier version (which I implore people to listen to!). In that recording, the music and musicians gain a life of their own, something impossible to describe but completely overwhelming. Made my hair stand on end. I think Jarvi and the DKB have become more legato in their playing, and seem to use more rubato - perhaps that is part of why this performance is less thrilling.
Indeed. The other version (2006 I believe) is better, brisker, more transparent, although this performance is still very good. Honeck also excellent, apart from the finale.
Ara a l'heroisme d'Ucraïna!
Genius in every way. Ludwig, you were taken too early from us, but your spirit lives on. God bless.
Not just the tempi. It's the idea of the internal rhythms...the stressed hemiolas, the inner voices.
100% best Eroica, and I've heard hundreds including as a cellist myself...
Exactly. Even the 2nd movement. It’s a funeral (March) so it’s the perfect tempo here.
Now THIS is what a modern day orchestra should sound like! Brings tears to my eyes.
Yes
Yes again
me too.
There is no one quite like Beethoven. He had a style that was all his own. A top composer! This is a great orchestra too! Thank you for sharing...
This rendition really captures those amazing ideas and quick musical intellect that Beethoven had overflowing in his mind.
GREATEST PERFORMANCE OF EROICA I HAVE HEARD SO FAR. CAPTURED ALL OF THE ENERGY!
Of course after the great karajan
It is great
@@jamasob Well, but Karajan was to soft
I cannot get enough of this video. The musicians in this orchestra play as if their lives depended on it. Just wonderful!
I’ve never been able to decide if I like this more than Beethoven’s 6th or 7th and that’s okay because I have time to listen to all of them every day. I’m so glad.
The coda to the first movement is heaven, especially the cellos and basses towards the end.
Love Beethoven

Je t'en prie :)
That touch of "Quartet" in the Finale is very awesome
Agree! @35:47 I wonder in which edition of this work it appears.
The best beethoven cycle and the best eroica, from Jarvi and DKB
Absolutely true
It's floating in outer space...how on earth haven't people realized this is out of this world yet? The whole cycle, yes! But even #3 alone...the second mov is outrageously brilliant. The tempo...the timpani...the whole damn thing!!!!! I liken Jarvi as the newer Kleiber. Both just "get it" and his skills in conveying to the orchestra are similar.

No matter how many times you may have heard the Eroica, this one is like hearing (and seeing) it for the first time. Congratulations to all concerned!
Correct. You always pick up on something new.
The Finale starts at 34:25.
Crazy good interpretation obviously. Might even be the best. But the production values of the video itself is also very impressive. I don't think I've ever seen a symphony shot on film this well. Perfect (and musically informed) close-ups. Just enough conductor shots. Incredible work.
The camera work on this video is gorgeous.
jarvi, always magnificent. very fast playing, very talented group. beautiful music.

Watch the Movie "Eroica" here on YT. It's all spelled out historically and the actors did tremendous job in the movie.
+David Lis Papa Haydn was old enough to live out the maxim, Good. Better. Best. Bested.
David Lis exactly! I watched that, and they were amazing actors. They really gave an idea to what the real first rehearsal was like in real life. Now of course in all Beethoven movies everything that happens is stuff that really happened when he was alive so they are very realistic.

Beethoven+ Jarvi+ DKB = Soulgasm
I often get emotionally overwhelmed by the intensity of the development section. It is almost like Beethoven captured God holding man accountable and thus pointing out the incredible suffering of humanity by the hands of mankind and demanding an answer.
Great great maestro Jarvi! Wonderful orchestra!

Photography really focused upon what's going on inside the musicians and Jarvi rather than their fingerings... intriguing, I like this approach
Elviswooden heart
The march and march-like parts are the best in this conduction. Well done horn gentlemen. Great!
39 people declared themselves emperor and Beethoven tore up his dedication of this song to them.
Such a majestic ending to this Symphony.
I trust you are now composing for the Angels, wherever you are.
Wonderful violoncellist at 38:20 and on :D
Great perfomance as well, beautiful ideas from Jaarvi.
Beautiful tempo. Not dragging like many other versions.Thank you!
Beethoven's music was my "first love"- it is sometime powerful and gentle
The story of Beethoven tearing up the dedication to Napoleon Bonaparte in a rage upon learning that he had crowned himself Emperor may well be apocryphal, but it is clear that Beethoven never forgave Napoleon for doing it; though a more astute political observer might have noted that the French state over which the latter had presided for the previous five years was a republic in name only. Bitte sehr. Dies Musik ist sehr spannend und interessant. Ich liebe das Musik von Beethoven.
The louder drum beating at the part that starts from about 21:50 feels fantastic and I wish they were even louder at least as alternative rendition.
My favorite Beethoven symphony! Genius masterpiece! I think, It's final - 4 part is the most nice work for orchestra!)) I like exactly this performance! Very good interpretation!
It is my favorite❤️I love beethoven!
My too
Bravo! Sublime performance.🙏🏻
Yeah, it's fantastic. Never heard it like that before.
Absolutely magnificent! The tempi is exactly where it should be. The Chailly recording is similar and also excellent.
When it comes to Beethoven symphony, Paavo Jarvi is the best
Intensive artistic feeling comunicates high-end intellectual power
Jarvi and the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, Beethoven himself would be proud
The first and second movements are excellent.
Happy 250th, Maestro!
The best I've heard. Amazing.
After 37:09 and till 37:54 - unreal magnificent and nice theme of this masterpiece!) But of course, all symphony is miracle!
Buena orquesta. Gracias por compartir este vídeo.

The Eroica literally changed the way composers thought about music forever
It's really wonderful.
With your permission, I will put the video on my phone
-28:54 - is 3d part "Scherzo".
-34:26 - is final part.
i can hear the eq compressing, its kinda like love how most people hide their true feelings long enough to create a facade.
I love the string quartet in the 4th movement!
Brilliant!
Great …. Powerful, heartfelt performance …. MUY BIEN ¡¡¡¡¡¡

Bravo!
I luuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuv it so beautiful

I love concerts on video! This is up there with the Ninth Symphony from Berlin conducted by Bernstein right after the wall fell.
I love Paavo Jarvi
I really like his interpretation, the second movement was a little to fast for my taste, but i love how he modernized the trumpet line a bit that really stuck out to me.
Maestro Prodigy agreed! I’m glad he did that.
Simply great! Remembers me of Carlos Kleiber style!
I love the emphasis by the conductor/ Tonmeister on the Contrabass section - unusual on other versions.
Jarvi does this symphony like no other and his version is superior
1st movement Tempo is perfect for me. it's not too fast!! beginning tempo is exactly 60.

Beethoven the best
Clarinetists and bassoonists - especial super masters at this orchestra!)

Danke! ;-)
alati hea Pavo Järvi!
Beautiful!
all time greatest symphony~!!!
Nice performance. The leaner orchestra fits the piece.
0:05 1st theme

38:25 - 39:05 this passage will always be my favourite
Final of Marcia Funebre really killed me.
45.33 PERFECT FOR ME
This conductor conducts with his chii, among other things. 👌
What we do and what we think is right here.... OMG
Splendid.
Nice to see complete pieces on the Tube by the DKB rather than the Berlin Phil charging alot to watch on their website
8:03 ... holy moly, that's heavy
LeVilainCam just how Beethoven wanted it! Pound it out!!!

No doubt his best symphony
going to the IV movement like a boss B-]
