How much quicker is petrol than diesel?
Well to find out, we’ve got our hands on the most powerful petrol & diesel BMW X7s to see just how different they really are! So let’s check out the stats…
Starting with the M50d, it’s packing a 3-litre straight-six diesel under the bonnet that can produce 400hp and 760Nm of torque. Power is sent to all four wheels via an 8-speed automatic gearbox, and it tips the scales at 2,460kg. If you’re looking to pick one of these up now, it’ll cost around £88,000.
Then we have the X7 M60i. It’s housing an enormous 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 under the bonnet, and this can put down 530hp and 750Nm. It’s a fair bit heavier than the M50d, coming in at 2,675kg, and it’s also a whole lot more expensive, costing around £130,000!
So the petrol-powered X7 has more power, but will the weight difference prove decisive? There’s only one way to find out… LET’S RACE!

As a Bimmer guy myself, I am sad to say that both looks horrible, but the older one looks comparitively better than the latest one. I seriously have no idea what BMW designers are doing.

Loving the pre-facelift face but I've gotta admit, the split headlamps work better for me in the X7 than the 7 series.

So the M60i is £130k but he got it second hand for £100k and it’s on 23 reg plate. Feel sorry for the first owner who lost £30k in less than a year🤦♂️ .

Could've been a dealership, where the loss was artificial anyhow, they wrote it off and got a kickback from BMW. It's the second owner after the dealer who most likely will incur the most losses.

This diesel vs 40i would be interesting match up
One of these followed me through Newcastle last week. The thing was so big it was too wide get past me on the dual lanes through town, it didn’t fit in the lane 😂
I recently went to the US of A for a holiday, Kentucky>Tennessee>Alabama, and we rented an F150 as our daily driver. Looking at the F250, F350, RAM 3500 etc on the road, our F150 felt small. And then coming back to the U.K., everything seemed small, SUVs included!

I was thinking how noisy it was. This is really where EV powertrains make so much more sense in this sort of vehicle. M50d and M60i lots of noise and not much go, they are so outdated now. Be interesting to see the iX 40, 50 and 60 compared against these two
Dear Carwow, can you please add the quarter mile time in 2 decimal places and the 0-60mph time of your runs because you do it on your review when you launch the cars with that machine you use. It just means there is no need of a speed trap. Thank you.

I do like the LCI, prefer the pre LCI with the LCIs colour though…quite an unfair comparison too as the petrols are faster than the diesels and then still get 2 extra cylinders too…should of used the 6 cylinder petrol…that would of been a fair comparison but none the less still a good race!!

Oh forsure. The range looks dated now. X7 looks way more sporty and futuristic. Plus has better self driving tech for highway and overall tech and luxury. Better performance. Pretty much checks all the boxes

I love both of these, especially the Colour on the M60i looks great and the Look in general has grown on me.
It's funny how every now and then you see a new Design Change on a Car Model and since it's so different you're turned off, then you see that Car in the wild a few times and after a while you start to like the Look. In general Cars often look much better in Person than in Videos or on Pictures

This video perfectly demonstrates the difference between torque and power.
Power = how fast you hit the wall
Torque = how far you go through the wall
@@AMG63 I think its a bad example because absolutely no one can verify it 😂. Power is when a car keeps going faster than the other. Torque runs out because it takes place at the early stage of acceleration. More power equals the ability to keep accelerating than other car.

Got a 23 X7 flawless so far and the BMW dealer experience is always good.
It is a great car! My family owns one and it’s great for a big family. Comfortable, quiet, has all the safety systems. And frankly, I like the front end of the LCi, but the pre LCi also looked good.

I would be curious to see how the diesel would have done with the ballast… the petro was 0.9 seconds slower, I wonder if the diesel would have been more consistent with the weight

I think you need to subtract 1 sec from the 1/4 mile times, they are surely off. There's no way that M50d runs the quarter mile in close to 15 sec and the M60i in close to 14 sec.
It's all mathematics, 530hp is a lot however, 2,675kg curb weight is enormous equating to 198hp / ton. I guess you would still expect a lower 13 second pass but it always comes down to the conditions on the day / fuel quality.
@@carnut9193 Great use of mathematics. Anyway, 200hp/t is a lot and the M60i is well capable of mid-to-high 12s for the 1/4 mile, not 13s. The M50d does 13.x sec. And as for the atmospheric conditions and fuel, if there's nothing extraordinary happening, the elements and/or type of gas have a minor impact on overall performance.

Pre-facelift looked timeless and elegant BMW, took several steps backwards, adding that horrendous front facia to the new models😊
