First Ride On My 2023 Marin San Quentin 3 | WATCH BEFORE YOU BUY!

  • The 2023 Marin San Quentin is a bit of a confusing bike. On one hand its super low standover height, short chainstays, and small wheels make harken to a dirt jumper, but the 64 degree headtube angle and low bottom bracket is more in line with no-compromise enduro hardtails like the Kona Honzo ESD or On-One Hello Dave. This weekend I took my brand new San Quentin 3 out on a black diamond trail ride, to the pump track, and to set of free-ride style dirt jumps to try and pin down who this bike is best suited for.

    Yes for wheely Wendy! Maybe in a wheely wheely windy day😂. I was debating between the Middle Child and San Quentin, pulled trigger on RSD and it’s been great! The only thing I was a bit let down was that the derailleur hanger is integrated with the sliding mechanism. Which is a bit pricey to replace and most importantly might be difficult to find in the future if RSD stops making them for whatever reason

    • @ridingwithjoshandwendy

      Haha I love it! And glad you’re stoked on the Middlechild, love that bike so much 😍 That’s true about the dropouts though, I was a little worried as well seeing as I’m prone to breaking them (I fall too much lol), but Alex reassured me that they’re pretty beefy. 9 months in and it’s holding strong!

      Ya man, that is a challenge! I’d say the Middlechild is more playful, but the San Quentin will be better for enduro type riding (long pedal up, steep and fast back down). And yes, Wendy rips!!

    Really cool that you took that bike to all those different styles of riding. I’m sure your right that it’s not a 10 at everything. Make it a mullet and change tires to what ever you think would be more suitable. And then it would be interesting to see if it could be an 8 1/2 at everything. That would be a successful one quiver hardtail.

    • @ridingwithjoshandwendy
      @ridingwithjoshandwendy  ปีที่แล้ว

      Definitely has the potential to be, and honestly I think a higher BB would make it a lot more well rounded, but I’m definitely biased towards the BMX/DJ feel. The mullet setup is pretty much the only way to change it so I probably will at some point! I’ll definitely play with different setups and share what I think on the channel!

    It has such a short seat tube it would never be long enough even with a dropper post for my legs without putting extra stress on the frame for climbing (extra long seat post), you can tell in your video your legs are not fully extended at the bottom of the pedal stroke, in my opinion it's a jump bike and for descending down only it's not a do it all bike. It would be a pain in the butt in the uk for climbing back up somewhere like cannock chase trying to pedal from such a low seating position unless you have really short legs 🙂, hence why i use a nukeproof scout instead. Hope this helps someone out if there are looking for a bike for ascending and descending..... 🙂 I'm 5ft 9in

      All are great bikes!! Tell me more about what you mean when you say “aggressive;” do you mean more dirt jumps/freeride stuff or high speed race-focused riding? Also, the San Quentin is just available in 27.5”, so it might be off the table if you’re 100% set on a 29’er.

    • @VdJong
      @VdJong ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ridingwithjoshandwendy Thanks for your comment. O I didn’t know the Marin was 27.5 only. I’m looking for a ‘do it all’ bike. From flatter trails (in the Netherlands) to some more aggressive enduro. Also really like to jib around. Turning the woods in to a skatepark. 🙏🏽

    • @ridingwithjoshandwendy
      @ridingwithjoshandwendy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ok cool! I wouldn’t say either of those to 29’ers are going to feel overly playful, but I’d probably go with the Meta HT (shorter chainstays, higher BB, etc.) I think the RSD Middlechild could be a great bike though, honestly one of the most playful bikes out there, but still capable on gnarly descents. They sell it in 29 or 27.5+, but not sure how easy it would be to get your hands on in the Netherlands. I have a few videos on that bike on my channel if you’re interested in learning more!

    • @ridingwithjoshandwendy
      @ridingwithjoshandwendy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, it can definitely handle it! But it will take a little more effort on your part (which in my opinion makes it more fun 👌). I also believe that a good hardtail is hands down better than a cheap full suspension, so my vote would be for the SQ3

    Everyone always focuses on the downhill in reviewing this bike. I hate fire roads and prefer to take the technical climbing trails up. I would be interested in How does it clear ledges, steps, and other uphill scrambles as you continue riding this bike.
    Minor nitpick: the paint job looks like someone did it with a spray can. Not a fan. I would still buy it, but not my fave.

    • @ridingwithjoshandwendy
      @ridingwithjoshandwendy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ya, the paint fade looks really neat from a distance, but a little rattle can-esque up close. In terms of tech climbing the short chainstays make it easy to get up and over things, but the bottom bracket is pretty low for a 27.5” bike, so pedal strikes are prevalent! Other than that though it climbed pretty well, didn’t feel too stretched out even on the XL (I’m 6’1” for reference)

      @ridingwithjoshandwendy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question man, and I plan to make a full video just that! In the grand scheme of things they’re pretty similar bikes, but I would say that the Middlechild is more poppy/playful with the shorter chainstays and higher BB, whereas the SQ is more stable at high speeds with the slacker head tube and low BB (the short and steep seat tube also makes it easy to size up, making it that much better for high speed stability)

    • @ridingwithjoshandwendy
      @ridingwithjoshandwendy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is, and honestly I think it’s the best bargain of all three. I’d avoid the SQ1 because it doesn’t have 12x148 dropouts, so you have to run a quick release wheel. The SQ2 isn’t bad, but I think the SQ3 is well worth the extra $500. I actually did a video looking at all three models, check it out! th-cam.com/video/qRQrQeUT1-s/w-d-xo.html

      @@ridingwithjoshandwendy I believe I watched your video now that I think about it. I knew the back end on the entry level had something wrong with it and obviously the basic fork. Dang well I can't afford the 3. Current options right now on my radar and deals on getting from my local dealers are (I prefer 27.5 but the growler is a deal I'm entertaining)
      2023 giant fathom 2 (27.5) currently highest on my list, just fitting my budget and has everything I'm mostly after. Just wanted aggressive, that low seat stay on the SQ is fantastic and the only think I'm missing $1400 inc tax
      2022 Kona Big horn, only issue mostly is the coil spring, really just wish I had air and also internal routing is beautiful imo, even if it makes things a pain for mechanics. Beautiful bike tho non the less, not sure the seat stay height compared to the giant $1200 inc tax
      2022 Rocky mountain growler 40, sweet specs but my biggest issue is the 29er factor, I know most people prefer a 29er, I just feel 27.5 feels plenty large for my liking (also a lil BMX background)

      In that case I think you’d be fine with the M. That said, the best part about the San Quentin is the super low seat tube, so even if you did go with a L, which will make it a bit more comfortable/stable for trails riding, you’ll still have plenty of standover clearance for dirt jumps/pump tracks/etc.
