- @MattJones developed the San Quentin hardtail from the ground up. We wanted to know his thoughts on a 29er version before put it into production, so challenged him to race the Dual and DH at the 2023 Sea Otter Classic. Check out what went down!

That is such a great Ambassador for the sport... I'm in my mid-fifties which is really quite hard to even comprehend, but I still mountain bike quite aggressively and Matt is so well-spoken, cheerful, and enthusiastic that it makes me want to get on the bike everyday...
We agree - he's this nice and convivial in person when cameras are not rolling. What you see on TH-cam is how he is all the time.
I got back into mountain biking because Matt’s videos. Happy owner of a 27,5” san quentin 3 now. My first mtb was a Bear Valley with that cool zolatone paintwork. Then I rode a Nail Trail through multiple wheel sets (canti brakes eat through the sidewalls). Marin still fun for me.

Good video! I love my 27.5 SQ3 it’s a very unique and fun. I purposely purchased it as I was sick of my 29er and feeling like I was riding a tractor lol! I’m hoping you make the El Roy in 27.5 soon 😉

Would this bike be a better choice for general day to day city riding, with some flowy, smooth trails.
Or would the rift zone be a better choice ?
Depends on your local trails and personal preferences. San Quentins are more aggressive style hardtails, with slack geometry and stout components to handle steeper and more challenging trails. Probably not going to be the best pick for general city riding. A Team Marin or Bobcat Trail would probably be a better pick for a do most anything/extremely versatile bike. The Rift Zones hit what we consider to be the sweet spot in trail bikes, and the 130mm of travel out back is great for general mountain biking (or for riding off curbs and whatever the concrete jungle throws at you).

Is it the same frame as the 27.5, and if not, will the 29er frame be available to purchase?
Hi - it's a unique frame, designed around the larger wheels (and you can't stuff 29"s into the 27.5: frame). At this point the frame option is limited to the 27.5" version, but time will tell if we add a 29" specific variant on down the line.

I still can't decided between a 27.5 or 29 San Quentin... opinions please?
27.5" is going to feel a bit more playful and also have a slightly stronger wheel than 29", while the larger size wheels will smooth things out a bit in rougher conditions.

A 29 inch San Quentin I certainly did not expect that, even I support Marin due to myself being born in California supporting those locally, and I am betting Matt Jones is going to switch to Ohlin forks.
I love Marin too but they are owned by a European company and made in china :P

Why does the bike rattle so much
Great question! Its a hardtail riding fast over rough terrain so the chain makes more noise than a full suspension.
So the new SQ or an El Roy? I need a hardtail!
