The most beautiful chords I've ever heard. Always loved jazz but never realised how these chords were created until now. Simple when you know how. Many thanks. You've just upped my game in a big way!
Yes. Yes. YESSS~!! I finally found someone on here that takes the time to apply the chords immediately with the theory to create an easy-to-understand visual aide for us sight learners. Thanks a lot for the lessons and I'll definitely be checking out your website. You earned yourself a sub~!!
Hey I really appreciate your channel and teaching style, it's very personable and simple to understand. I'm sure you will help tons of people learn jazz piano with these videos.
Definitely one of the best no nonsense jazz chord videos on TH-cam. At 4:26 the move from E7 #9 13 to Am7 9 (dunno if that's the name) is something I always hear but can't reproduce.
GOOD LESSON COMING FROM A GOOD TEACHER. I AM A SONGWRITER AND I DO A LOT OF SEQUENCING. I HAVE A MR 76 KEYBOARD WITH A 16 TRACK SEQUENCER ON BOARD. I CREATE ALL MY TRACKS FROM IT. I NEVERED CLASSIFIED MYSELF AS A KEYBOARD PLAYER, YET I CREATE ALL MY TRACKS FROM IT. IN-BETWEEN WRITING SONGS, I STICK MY HEAD IN A BOOK TO LEARN DIFFERENT CHORD PROGRESSIONS. THE MORE I LEARN WHAT GOES WITH WHAT, MAKES IT EASY FOR ME TO CREATE. THANKS A MILLION. KEEP THE LESSONS COMING.
Thank you very very much. Not alone do you give us your knowledge but you also give people like me more confidence then bleeds into other areas of our lives. I wish you happiness and love all the days of your life.
This is excellent. I was trained classically as a child for ten years. I'm not native to jazz. But the way you are presenting these lessons on the structures of the chords, it makes perfect sense, and is really easy to put together based on the structural approach you are suggesting. Really helpful.
So, I think, it's the best lesson of jazzy piano. So, my congratulations, you earned a subscription, and I hope to see more lessons)) Thank you, Best wishes, Lev.
a nice jazz lesson for me. I want to introduce myself to jazz, even i started as a pianist in a church. i want to have an innovation to my music, and this improvisations impressed me a lot. Im currently working on jazz arrangements, and it help me. thanks bro.
this is exactly what I needed to hear. my piano has been very limited to basic chords (most complex being 7th chords). I'm an edm producer and can't wait to use some of these! **subscribed and liked**
i wish i had realized how cool jazz is while i was still in high school. they had jazz band and i didnt realize the potential in learning all of it. 10 years later im picking it up again.
Past week I've been dieing to learn some jazz chords, and I'm so glad I stumbled across your video! I know what I'll be doing for the next few months! Thanks a lot for not being verbose in the instruction as well, really helped :)
I really wish you would explain the chords you're doing in between the ones you're teaching. For me, applying new chords to a progression is a much easier way to understand the purpose of the chords. I find myself pausing this video during the in between chords to figure out how to appropriately use the ones you are teaching. Like the last chord on here, the Bb dominant 7th... it sounds lovely the way you use it in what seems like a 2-5-1, then some sort of flat7-7-1? Not sure what you're doing there, but that's totally the type of application I'm trying to put these chords to. Thanks for the tips though! These chords sound great!
Some very cool sounds! One thing: was surprised to hear that you don't use the minor 7th chord that much in jazz, since it's basically the 2 of 2-5-1 sequences.
thanks really helpful but I was wondering if you could upload some pictures for keyboard keys highlighting the chord's keys only because it's sometimes hard to see through your hands and I'm not quite familiar to A,B,C... naming method Thanks again
you sir just earned a subscription. my suggestion tho, the camera is a bit offset on an angle. it may make it a bit easier to see your hands if it were directly above. Great lesson and knowledge otherwise.
This is so helpful! Thank you! What key is this in?? Bb? You mention one chord has the root, Bb in it! So what are the numbers of these chords? ie. I, V, etc.
I really liked the video and your beautiful chords! I'm just wondering how to progress these chords. Is there some other video that I can refer to for placing the chords in order?
+Peter Song Hi Peter. Yes, lots of additional training on the Freejazzlessons.com website. Are you on our email list? That's a good way to start learning more about chord progressions and tunes.
That was your informative article, here are a few more tips on how to play the piano… Try practicing about an hour a day, or even half an hour if you can't find time. Do more practice whenever you have more time. For example, on weekends you could do more than 1 hour, like two or three, or even more. This is very helpful because it pulls you out of the routine of piano playing, and lets you practice more and perfect the pieces you play.
Hey this is really great... thank you! it's a little fast for me when the chords come together but hey! how exactly do inversions work? anyways thanks a lot for the lessons!
Okay so in the beginning you played a minor eleventh chord. Started with Cmaj. then put a Dm chord underneath, which I thought was awesome by the way. But, is there a reason why you chose Dm as opposed to another minor chord. If there is a strategy or science to it I'd really like to know. Thanks
music is key that is definitely a nice way of doing it..I play piano both ear and notes this is related to slash chords which is just usually on base note in left hand.. found a lot in lead sheets difficult to do on guitar sometimes but useuful for the base player.. often these are found by instinct just walking the base line down playing a c triad then base in left goes down and depending on your inversions of triad i ceg or egc or gce that would be different chords with a lot of different names but that's what gives music it rich texture. changing the base can also have a voice leading effect..
With the e7th with the sharp 9 and the flat 13 on top what were the other chords that u played after that chord, i loved them and i'd like the notes for those other chords
what is the chord progressio in the part of the second chord (dominant 13)? I know it's a 2-5-1 but cant recognize the exact tones of the first chord. Thanks :)
I'm a classical musician and don't know much about jazz, but you never seem to play the 5th of the left hand chord, say in the E7 chord there was no B, and in the B flat 7 no F, is that just to avoid dissonance when adding the C triad on top? Coz I imagine the C and B may clash in the E maj, or the F and E in the B flat 7? Or was that something to do with spacing? Or is that just the standard practice? Great video btw :)
Hi, I am classically trained in piano. However, I want to get more into jazz and the theory used in it. What would you recommend (Books, videos and etc) to get me there?
Erik Nichols Hi Erik. I have authored a # of jazz piano courses which you can find on my website Freejazzlessons.com. Those would be a great place to start. Thanks!
What would be some simple progressions that these would be used for? I know that they are all different and for different sounds but could you give an example for each?
my left ear enjoyed the intro
That's neat :)
Shadow Graphics did the right one hate it?
Shadow Graphics I was banging my right ear bud on the table
My right ear felt left out
Shadow Graphics I
this is why I prefer to listen to jazz over classical. The chords just sound so rich and soothing. Wonderful
John Moon :)
Agreed!
I like to listen to both but I suck at playing Jazz

Excellent lesson thanks so much for putting this up!
Some very cool sounds! One thing: was surprised to hear that you don't use the minor 7th chord that much in jazz, since it's basically the 2 of 2-5-1 sequences.
I think he means he would add some extensions to the minor 7 sound rather than not use the chord at all
thank you for sharing and expanding my learning
You got it Victor!
Cool stuff my man!!!
Subscribed!!!
