Isn't it lovely how as we get older we have these experiences that remind us of our parents or elders, and the appreciation we feel towards them once we get that deeper understanding of what they were going through back then can be so powerful
Genius move to go and talk to each of the old guard. They want their experience to be appreciated (which it should be), and they need to see that you are an individual who can be trusted with their legacy.
I found that opening story so interesting, to be told you have the trust and confidence of everyone on that board, but then to be shown in real time that that's not actually the case would have felt like a bit of a slap in the face. Kudos to Mark for taking it on the chin and not getting caught up in the blow that would have been to his ego.
I didn’t know there was so much business in sports, or what a big role and responsibility his job was. You gotta love the game to be given that responsibility
2:55- the truth about being a human! We often put these business leaders on pedestals and think of them as big figures beyond reach, but they are human too.
Absolutely Mark! There's so much to be said for being dependable and trustworthy. There's a really simple but wonderful feeling in knowing that's how people feel towards you.
There is so much nuance in leadership. We try to remove the humanity from it to remove the pitfalls, but at the end of the day it is all just people working with people.
Instant anxiety thinking of starting a new job - I have been told on a few occasions to stop working so hard so that the other staff will like me...Which I'm understanding a lot better after watching Mark's talk.
This talk is about why it is important to earn the trust of others, rather than the importance of trusting. And those in high positions need to take heed
I've been in the same job for over 12 years and I often think about how if I was more aware of myself and how I wanted to be perceived, how different my trajectory within the company could have been. Definitely something worth thinking about.
That story about his day is beautiful. What is odd to note is that his dad probably wasn’t even thinking strategically, that is just the way you treat people and be a person. Our modern world is lacking so much of this and I know I’m not the only one to note that a huge part of this is because of our technology.
Yes Mark thank you for putting this out there! Building this kind of trust is important not just for rapport but because it holds you accountable to others as well as to yourself!
In this new digital world where we can't speak to anyone, and are stuck in the endless que of chat bots and emails, finally some sense! really good talk thats worth sharing.
Gosh I haven't started a new job in over 12 years but I remember that first day and I was just, terrified! Wish I had some of his confidence back then, or the knowledge of how to turn fear into excitement!
It has taken me a long time to realise that trust is so easily taken away. I had no idea so many people were quick to judge and assume the worst when we didn't reach their expectations.
1:1 connection from management is vital. When you can see the person and know they are a real person makes such a difference for employees. As management, you also know exactly who is executing what. It is human.
Oh I have been there, trying to convince senior management that we need to move with the times, that we need to think outside the box - knowing that what I was trying to do was the right thing but having to constantly negotiate and explain. Oh the frustration!
Maybe I've been taking my workplace and the support network within it for granted because I can't even imagine a situation where my ideas wouldn't be met with trust and enthusiasm.
I think the value and meaning of trust has been a little corrupted over the last few decades, it's nice to see someone talking about getting back to those ideals.
Must be really hard to go in to a role and be surrounded by people who have ‘done it all before’ and have a history of what they think works and doesn’t work. Old management is great because it has experience but so often it also prevents things from changing and moving forward. The same concept executed in a different way can be all the difference.
When it's mentioned that there were people owning sports teams, that did not have the know-how or the funds, how does something like that even go ahead? Was it literally just left to who could flash the most cash?
I saw Zuckerberg talking about the "MetaVerse" his view of the future where he decides what we do and what we see, and all without trust. I hope this speaker is able to move some people to human connections by people instead of bot driven algorithms aimed at pushing us further apart.
I can't believe this even needs to be spoken about? Maybe that's just how far removed from the world of big business I am but if you don't trust the people you work for or those that work for you... I mean what kind of an environment is that?
Couldn't agree more about the importance of trust and how badly the lack of it is affecting everything around us. Just look at this pandemic and all the anti-vaxxers. I can't help but think if there were credible news outlets that people actually trusted there wouldn't be so much misinformation. I mean, one can hope right?
Okay but he can be forgiven for thinking that the vote was going to go his way if he'd spoken to all these people who were supporting him! Like where's the trust from them just going silent and not backing him up?
There's something really inspiring when a new manager or staff member joins our team and they take the time to see how we function.
Isn't it lovely how as we get older we have these experiences that remind us of our parents or elders, and the appreciation we feel towards them once we get that deeper understanding of what they were going through back then can be so powerful
What he said about being one fan connecting to other fans actually made me teary, such a wonderful example of community.
It was truly a special moment for me and so many who participated.
Mark is the best example of how a leader operates. I am in awe of his energy. What a beautiful human.
And there you have it! Remembering, listening and learning to be humble. The traits of building trust.
Not going to lie. Mark is one of the guys that rejuvenated the league. And a commissioner that actually seamed to care.
Sorry for such a late reply...thanks for the kind comment. Glad to see CFL back.
He is really a great man
Genius move to go and talk to each of the old guard. They want their experience to be appreciated (which it should be), and they need to see that you are an individual who can be trusted with their legacy.
The old guard kept the league going through hard times..
100% agree! If you're surrounded by people who don't trust that you know what's up, it can really start to eat away at your self-trust and confidence.
How could anyone NOT trust this guy? He seems so genuine and earnest.
Absolutely agree Mark trust is crucial and can benefit a team - all parts of a team - in some really surprising ways.
yep, he'd be good talking to companies with client service issues.
Cohon was a great commissioner, and he's a great Canadian.
I was there for the Fan March in Toronto with my girl friend. It was AMAZING.
Fan march was fun...I miss it
He brought the CFL back to Ottawa, enough said!
So was I, wish he was still running it now.
When people connect we feel connected, I remember him at the head of the football
This guy has a lifetime of experience in how to support the people of the business. What insight.
Appreciate your kind comment.

2:55- the truth about being a human! We often put these business leaders on pedestals and think of them as big figures beyond reach, but they are human too.
good point...
People connecting with people. This is how life is and how all elements of life should be- even business.
The story of him and his brother going to work with his dad and picking up rubbish in the parking lot is so freakin adorable!
Perfectly spoken with pure honesty and wisdom.
I just love this guy! Seems so genuine in terms of how he values his community.
Very kind of you - thanks so much
Instant anxiety thinking of starting a new job - I have been told on a few occasions to stop working so hard so that the other staff will like me...Which I'm understanding a lot better after watching Mark's talk.
It's amazing what you can get done when you trust that the people around you are doing what they need to do as well, like a well-oiled machine.
This talk is about why it is important to earn the trust of others, rather than the importance of trusting. And those in high positions need to take heed
I love this talk, Mark you seem like such a genuine, joyful person! Who wouldn't trust you?
I would love to work for this dude! He just seems so down to earth but also you know he's getting it done and inspiring those around him.
got a feeling he may be really tough!
I've been in the same job for over 12 years and I often think about how if I was more aware of myself and how I wanted to be perceived, how different my trajectory within the company could have been. Definitely something worth thinking about.
So eloquently put. Truly a man I would love to speak human to human with.
Very much appreciate your kind comment. Mark
This is really important for everyone to see who serves people.
oh gosh he has such a great energy and i love his care and honesty, so beautiful.
Thanks for your kind comments

I think you are right about my father -- it just came naturally to him!! Great reflection.
Yes Mark thank you for putting this out there! Building this kind of trust is important not just for rapport but because it holds you accountable to others as well as to yourself!
Across all areas of life
You are welcome
Agreed!
that would have been an upward battle for quite a bit, kudos to Mark for pushing forward and that passion
Thanks Nicholas --- got to have passion for what you do!! Makes work much easier
Really cool to hear about how he applied that wisdom from his father to big time football business. I'm sure his dad would be really proud.
I'm sure he would too
Thank you so much...my father really is my greatest mentor.. he is now 84 years old and still teaching me new things...
In this new digital world where we can't speak to anyone, and are stuck in the endless que of chat bots and emails, finally some sense! really good talk thats worth sharing.
Thank you --- who is not tired of zoom!! Need get out there and connect.
Aww the story around the 12 minute mark is so cool! Especially the part about being just a fan connecting with a sea of fans.
It's always worth noting that to maintain that trust you have to really work at consistently demonstrating your abilities!
This is such a beautiful talk, I love this mans story, especially the parts about his father and daughter.
Yes this should be mandatory viewing for all CEO's of service companies!
Thanks so much for your kind comment.
@@markcohon2105 Thanks for the talk Mark!
This is exactly the kind of return to old values that I love to see.
Gosh I haven't started a new job in over 12 years but I remember that first day and I was just, terrified! Wish I had some of his confidence back then, or the knowledge of how to turn fear into excitement!
Think about what you will do when you start your next opportunity!!
wow really?
What a great man Mark is.
Trust can be so powerful when it is genuine and used for positive things.
What a humble human. I would love to be in in his presence, I imagine the talk in person was a real experience.
TRUTH, thanks Mark, speaking for thosre of us who care!
Building rapport and earning trust within a team is the only way to facilitate productivity that leads to success!
It has taken me a long time to realise that trust is so easily taken away. I had no idea so many people were quick to judge and assume the worst when we didn't reach their expectations.
You sound like an open and honest person
Such a beautiful perspective and just shows that those 'old fashioned' ideals still hold up today.
This is so true, and it goes beyond business. Care about others and they will care about you.
Appreciate your comment - it is so true.
So true, we have forgotten we are serving each other.
What a powerful way of thinking, he would be marvelous to work for and I definitely would read his book!
the title got me even more so this whole speech. what a great guy
One of the better TED talks.
Trust has always been number 1 with me!
This is truth!
1:1 connection from management is vital. When you can see the person and know they are a real person makes such a difference for employees. As management, you also know exactly who is executing what. It is human.
And it also leads to a plethora of ideas and more conducive work place!
As we become more and more profits based rather than customer based, we loose this connection
We need more people like him in charge of big business
There is a lot of truth to this, it comes down to how we see each other too. Are we creating relations or are we creating transactions?
Thanks for sending this talk to me Uma!
Trust and also knowing you're no better than anyone else.
You are so right --- Mark
trust is the most important for anything good in life
Thanks for your comments...has to apply to everything
Just brilliant, perfect Mark just perfect!
All around legend, you can just tell.
"Building Trust" couldn't agree more and it's not the sign on the office wall.
What a wonderful role model your father was even if it took a while to figure out what it all meant.
Such a great talk! I would encourage anyone in a leadership role to draw on this guys knowledge.
There is a lot to be said about just being a human being and connecting with others as human beings.
The fans carrying that cup! I am not a sport person but I can only imagine what that must have meant to them. That is trust right there!
It was cool to be part of it --- more leagues should copy what we did!!
Oh trust. Very hard to find this in a digital world.
There are so many people with control issues, they don't realise that if they can trust their team, their job becomes so much easier!
Oh too many bosses I've had like that.... TRUST ME, don't micromanage me because you don't trust yourself!
@@omarputal 👍
Best CFL Commish ever!
Thank you - it was a great run!!
Love love love this!!!!!
He's brilliant and clearly a smart and compassionate man. Such a good a talk!
Um, yes! Of course! Makes so much sense!
Such great leadership advice and life advice. Thank you
Very much appreciate your comment...thank you
10:13- well done to hold up your end of the bargain there!
100% truth!
wow how much is this correct!
I think the value and meaning of trust has been a little corrupted over the last few decades, it's nice to see someone talking about getting back to those ideals.
This is so true!
Tough gig. You still have to prove your self daily.
spot on!!
He looks like the sports guy you want to listen to though he's got a pretty tough audience to work with.

Great observation...takes time but you have to believe, be passionate and respectfully convince people to follow your direction
I am sharing this lots
Appreciate you sharing my talk!! Thanks.
When it's mentioned that there were people owning sports teams, that did not have the know-how or the funds, how does something like that even go ahead? Was it literally just left to who could flash the most cash?
Much better group of owners now around the table at the cfl - we attracted great new owners
@@markcohon2105 agreed you did Mark, thanks for spearheading that.
I saw Zuckerberg talking about the "MetaVerse" his view of the future where he decides what we do and what we see, and all without trust. I hope this speaker is able to move some people to human connections by people instead of bot driven algorithms aimed at pushing us further apart.
the absolute truth here.
We are so aligned -- thanks for sharing my message
Welcome man..
I remember him, I am a TiCat fan!
Good luck this weekend against the Als!!

I would have thought building trust was already a priority for businesses? Maybe I'm naive.
Not in all businesses...you would be surprised
The Nona of the football family! Hahahahahaha!!
I learned a little italian when I was in university!!
Too funny! Dad in the closet doing the big job. This was the beginning of work from home Zooms.
Nothing worse than a peppy new employee, seems that is the same sentiment across all levels of business
Okay but he can be forgiven for thinking that the vote was going to go his way if he'd spoken to all these people who were supporting him! Like where's the trust from them just going silent and not backing him up?
