Ease up on Leon. He never, NOT ONCE, reciprocated her misguided teenage crush. He just began to feel some human connection as either a friend or a father figure. He’s too pure (and perhaps too simple) to give way to base, creepy urges. He’s just awakening to a potential life with more companionship than a plant.

Matilda was the one fascinated and in love with Leon. Leon never reciprocated the feelings, he just felt the need to protect her and eventually learned to want more in life. Her feelings were childish and inappropriate, but that was her just immature version of “love”. Leon being a good man never allowed it to get “creepy”. Great flick, with amazing performances from Portman, Reno and especially Gary Oldman. He is EVERYTHING in this film!
I always thought Matilda felt she didn't have much time to live so she was on fast-forward trying to pack everything (romance) into what little time she had left.

@DICK TRICKLE IMO it was just a case of Stockholm syndrome. He saved her live and as kid she doesn't understand what she's saying. 7 year olds talk about marrying adults but its not real. They don't know what they're saying.
Luc besson the wepriter and director had in the original script them having a romantic relationship and having sex. Obviously American producers made him take it out.

Matilda was supposed to make you uncomfortable, that was the whole point. She was falling for Leon. She never had a “real” father and she quickly became infatuated with Leon. Luckily at heart Leon was a good man and he didn’t take advantage of her. Evidently you watched the longer directors cut that showed more of her infatuation. A great film.
sadly, the way it turned out in the movie was only realized because reno and others threatened to quit since besson's original script had mathilda and leon actually have a.. uhm... physical relationship...... the guy is just such a disgusting creep

Great and excellent character driven story. All three leads turn in a masterful and unforgettable performance. They really don't make movies like this anymore.
Fun Fact: Gary Oldman said his screaming of the now iconic "Everyone!" was improvised to make director Luc Besson laugh.
Convincing Extras Fact: During the filming involving all of the police cars on the street, a man ran from a store he had just robbed. When he encountered the movie set by accident, he saw all of the "police" and gave himself up to a bunch of uniformed extras.
Never Crossed His Mind Fact: According to Jean Reno, he decided to play Léon as if he were "a little mentally slow" and emotionally repressed. He felt that this would make audiences relax and realize that he wasn't someone who would take advantage of a vulnerable young girl. Reno claims that for Léon, the possibility of a physical relationship with Mathilda (Natalie Portman) is not even conceivable, and as such, during the scenes when such a relationship is discussed, Reno very much allowed Portman to be emotionally in control of the scenes.
I never knew he improvised that "Everyone!" line... 🤭

She’s a little girl with a crush, she came from an abusive home and has a warped sense of thinking because of the abuse which happens to ppl that experience an abusive home. I doubt that Leon had a romantic interest in Matilda. He just leads a very lonely existence and is happy to have someone to care about. Matilda is also very lonely even though she had a family and she’s confused about her feelings.

In the original script, Mathilda was written to be 13/14, and they became lovers.
@@wubranch1 original scripts dont mean too much, there is a lot of stuff in those that dont make it far into the process. star wars being a good example of how weird and different it was in the first few scripts.
The story was written after the director, Luc Besson, met his future wife when she was a twelve year old actress and he was 29. They married when she was 15 (legal age in France), and she bored his child at 16. Do you really think he waited three years to have a romantic relationship with her? Now go watch the movie again, tell me you still think it’s not a romantically charged relationship later changed so as to not alienate most audiences. Then go listen to some R. Kelly songs and pretend he wasn’t singing to a 14 year old.

leon is a bit slow, socially awkward, shy and has a hard time dealing with this damaged little girl that came to him for protection. he does not see her as a potential romantic interest, he sees a scared little girl that needs his protection.
do you want to know how i know leon didnt think of her in a romantic way? because leon himself said so.
and it doesnt matter what the previous drafts and scripts were because this is what we got. for example in star wars, luke was gonna be many things, like a small alien, woman, robot, old man, and there are loads more things like this. but none of that matters cause we got the star wars we have.
There are more than one version of this movie... the version you watched was heavily weighted on Matilda's infatuation with Leon... it had to be cut and rebranded to suit other countries. Most people appear to prefer the other version as it is not so uncomfortable with those scenes... it is more balanced so that you could see that Matilda brought meaning to his life, he loved her as a daughter figure, wasn't 'in love' with her. She was confused because she didn't have a normal upbringing with a proper father figure, which is why she was so confused sexually with him... a male figure that didn't hurt her. Awkward dynamic to bring into a movie like this. One of my favourites of all time, but not a fan of that over exposed aspect.
ive only ever watched this version and i have never thought leon was in love with her. and to me its very obvious, nothing he does suggests to me he is. him being a shy, socially awkward loner that has a hard dealing with kids... yeah, i dont see it xD
@@RanRayu Many people do comment that Leon presents as a pedo for not doing more to prevent her advances, which really frustrates me because it detracts from his awesome character and the main point of the movie. Even some other reaction videos have focused far too much on this. I think the controversial film maker modelled it off an experience he was having with a young person... I think his reputation took a huge hit from it.

The sleeping in the same bed scene makes no sense and is taken completely out of context in the non directors cut.
It had to be cut only for the United States. That's it. Because Americans can't handle anything that doesn't cater to an reinforce their personal paradigms.
Mathilda was a child, and her feelings toward Leon were childish. Her infatuation was quite typical fro a child in her position. Many children in traumatic situations react to protective adults in quite the same way. Leon never reciprocated the infatuation; he never had sexual feelings for her, because he was an adult, more than just chronologically. He did, though, see how having her in his life--as a friend, even a surrogate daughter--was opening opportunities for happiness he never thought possible. It was the first time he thought he could have a real life, one away from "cleaning".
It's Americans that made it weird, so the U.S. cut had to butcher the plot and cut much of it out.

I never once got the vibe that Leon had any inappropriate thoughts or feelings. Just that Matilda was a seriously traumatized young person who needed a lot of love and support. Now, the director on the other hand... he's creepy as fuck. He was 31 when he started "dating" his 15 year old second wife, getting her pregnant a year later. And he claims he was "inspired" to make this movie based on this bullshit. He's dodged all sorts of sexual assault and misconduct charges and he's an all-around creep.

I always got the impression that Leon was a tiny bit slow, and an immigrant who found his place doing what he was good at... very emotionally stunted from not living a standard life with normal relationships. It feels like he does his best to not feed Mathilda's emotions, while also trying to not offend her. He knows she's a child, he just doesn't shut her down so harshly.

Leon's love was that of a father. Matilda had a immature childish love. You're supposed to feel uncomfortable but once you realize that, it all makes sense.
The milk is also a metaphor for his young soul at heart. Doesn't no how to read, has a stunted childhood, still drinks milk. Even though he's a hitman. I read that Jean Reno decided to play the character of Leon as a "slow" guy, and I think this is what saves this movie from being fully creepy.

Leon isn't about anything creepy. As others have said, it's supposed to make you uncomfortable, it's good that it makes you uncomfortable.
Matilda is a young girl experiencing new and confusing emotions; Leon was her saviour, treated her with the love and compassion she never recieved from her real parents, so naturally, as developing humans do, she loved him in a confused but innocent way.
Leon understood this and would have never done anything disturbing like that..."no women, no children, those are the rules"
This movie is like fine art. Sometimes, fine art is disturbing, too pull you in and make you feel uncomfortable, to get you to see the greater good. This movie does that, while delivering the best acting performances ever, especially from 12 year old Natalie.. Great reaction. Thank you. 😊

I`m glad you are reacting to this one...I`ve loved this movie since the day it first came out...An outstanding cast and Jean Reno is one of my all time favorite actors...I also love anything that Gary Oldman does in any movie.
Jean Reno's performance in Nikita and Le Grand Bleu is also memorable.

Totally agree -- such an underrated flick. It deserves more visibility.
The problem is the same as Rob Roy had: It is a really good movie that came out at the same time as a similar, better movie and suffers by comparison.

In my opinion, Léon was the first positive man in Mathilda's life, but she got confused as to what that meant. She only seemed to understand transactional relationships, except with her brother.

Dude, when you made the almost "meow!" sound around 1:56, you set off my cat Badger meowing, he thought you were talking to him,lol. And yeah, this movie is super uncomfortable, for all the reasons everyone has mentioned, so it can be a hard watch. But the performances all around are freaking amazing.
Gary Oldman gives it his all in his performances. In Bram Stoker's Dracula, he was sublime. If you haven't seen that yet, I recommend it highly.
Mathilda is clearly traumatized and has never had a positive and kind male role model, which is why she is quickly very infatuated with Leon. Leon clearly understands the boundary though, and experiences more of a fatherly love for Mathilda. US audiences are always so deeply disturbed by this movie, as a European I don't quite understand why because to me it was always very clear from the first viewing what was (and wasn't) happening between Leon and Mathilda..
I agree. The sexual suggestions are totally coming from Matilda, not Leon. And he is mature enough to realize that they are coming from a confused little girl. So he’s not about to take advantage of that.
I think this is a lovely movie. It shows how deep love can be, even if it’s not sexual.

If you like this character, the director/writer has said this is a sequel to La Femme Nikita because he liked Jean Reno. I also consider the movie RONIN to be an alternate-reality sequel to Leone following the character if he didn't die.

Not gonna lie man, this is my favourite movie of ALL time. It was the movie that made me fall in love with.. The Job.
As for The Relationship discomfort. It was never reciprocated.. it was always a one way thing. It's one of the reasons why he is annoyed that she keeps bringing it up.
It never seemed to me like Leon would ever take advantage of Matilda. He just came across to me as being incredibly shy, awkward and emotionally repressed. Perhaps even autistic or at least on the spectrum in some form. He definitely appeared to see her as a daughter though. He just didn’t know how to deal with some of Matilda’s eccentricities, specifically her advances towards him. I would argue that there’s very few people who would actually be able to deal with some of Matilda’s weirdness lol.
I dont see him taking advantage of her, even though she was throwing that out there because of how she grew up. But i wouldnt of been surprised if leon had lived that they would of ended up together years down the road

I love this movie. Not a bad performance from anyone, but Gary Oldman steals the show as per usual. Him screaming, "EVERRRYONE!!!", still gives me chills after all these years!
Gary Oldman is phenomenal in this. One of his best performances, and he's always great. The guy with dreads, the white guy with dreads, is the guy Gary Oldman based the character he played in True Romance. His birth name is William Harbour but he goes by the name Willi One Blood in his reggae singing career. One song he did was used in the film Dumb and Dumber.

This film is a masterpiece but holy shit I was laughing so much at your reaction.
Jean Reno is the excellent friend-bad guy in 1988's THE BIG BLUE, about freestyle divers (freestyle - no airtanks, going as deep and as long as they can). Powerful film with perhaps a perfect "Bring your earphones" soundtrack. Then with Robert DeNiro in 1998's RONIN with several great car-chases and enough twists to keep us hopping. COLOMBIANA is a more recent "girl grows up to be assassin" film.
The Big Blue is amazing, highly recommended.
I'm really happy you watched the director's cut. The edited version removes a lot of the parts that develop Leon and Mathilda's relationship, which is the heart of the movie and what sets it apart. Without that it's "just" a solid action movie.
A lot of people read into this movie what they want to see, that this is an illustration of a conflicted young girl and a man who found a family ... but let me tell you something ... the way the movie reads on the surface is accurate
Luc Besson wrote and directed this picture. On the commentary tracks his ex-wife says he wrote this movie about her and their relationship. They met when she was 12 years old and he was 28. Information online has tried to temper their relationship, now they simply state they started dating when she was 15 (as if this is acceptable, also he left his first wife for her) ...
By the time she was 16 she was pregnant and married to him. When she was 20, they were filming The Fifth Element (she is the blue opera lady), he had an affair with Mila Jovavich who was 19 at the time and then left his wife for her (I sense a pattern ...)
He has also been accused of rape, sexual assault, and sexual harassment as recently as 2018 by several women including students

I guess you just didn’t get it. Matilda is a confused, neglected and abused little girl. She met Leon, who actually shows her some kindness, and takes care of her. Her reaction is that she falls in love with him.
Luckily, Matilda met Leon, who isn’t going to take advantage of her innocence. Unlike some lowlife she could have met up with! Although he’s a killer, he is a good man. Leon was the best thing that happened to her.
If Leon had survived, I believe that they would have lived like father and daughter. And eventually, Matilda would have matured, and realized how silly she had been.
But they would have loved each other. There are all kinds of love. Not just romantic love! And they definitely loved each other!
No I understood it completely fine. The problem is everybody keep overlooking the fact that in the version I watched that he told the little girl he couldn’t make love to her bc he would be a bad lover.
I understood everything from her point of view and why she felt that way BUT everybody skipping over the fact that whole conversation happened is no better than that hotel keep that let them leave together after being told by the little girl that he’s her lover.
Leon might not be R. Kelly and actually did stuff with her but it was times he let it lead on like it was more than father daughter.

Yeah, this is a different version. The one I saw didn’t have her being as infatuated as she is in this version. Leon thankfully didn’t act on her infatuation and tries to keep it like a father figure, he loved her.
Natalie's mother was worried about all of the guns in the film & insisted that her daughter learn how to handle guns properly in order for her to be safe.
As good as Gary Oldman was playing the bad cop, if you want to see THE Gary Oldman performance then you have to watch Bram Stoker's Dracula! Francis Ford Coppola directed it (the Godfather) and it has a star studded cast! Anthony Hopkins (Silence of the Lambs), Keanu Reeves, Winona Ryder, Cary Elwes (Princess Bride)... just an all around great movie!
As a former actor who played a professional in a play. In middle school. I can say this actor played a professional pretty well. I’ll see myself out.
I don't know if you have seen it yet, but Luc Besson did another movie with Gary Oldman in it called The Fifth Element. Its nothing like this one, but you'll love it. It is one of my favorite Oldman roles.

So, overall one of the most underrated films of all time. This is excellent and gets better every time I see it

It's supposed to be problematic, you feel for these characters and yes it's uncomfortable but you really want them to walk off into the sunset together being psycho assassins and it truly breaks your heart. Very well done. It's interesting how they are both so very innocent in their own way yet live very corrupted lives.
I think there are many people who can relate to both Leon and Mathilda as far as their personal struggles go. Leon being a lonely man trying to do the right thing by her, and Mathilda who'd never had a father who loved her and taught her how to value herself, and who was forced into growing up faster then she should. That's why, despite this movie tackling uncomfortable situations between the two of them, many people still appreciate it. It's a film that unapologetically shines a spotlight on this dark world we live in.
The actor playing Benny (one of Stansfield’s men) was Keith A. Glascoe. His main employment was being a firefighter with FDNY, he died on 9/11 😞
As everyone says, the relationship between the main characters is such that Mathilda’s infatuation is never reciprocated, but the point is that they are both completely inverted from the people they are meant to be. Leon is the ‘child’, unable to read, only drinking milk, unable to handle money, and barely able to look after himself; his plant is the only thing in life he has responsibility for. Mathilda on the other hand is the ‘adult’, who smokes, drinks, has assumed a kind of parental responsibility for her younger brother, and has been forced through her circumstances to become entirely self-reliant.
Because she has been forced to grow-up before her time, she mistakenly believes this makes her ready for an adult relationship; Leon, despite being child-like in every other way, knows it’s wrong.

It is supposed to be uncomfortable. She’s just a confused kid who just was saved by the only person to show her kindness. It would have been different if he reciprocated her feelings. He loved her more as a father I feel like for sure.
Matilda is 12 not 7, the perfect age to start smoking. Not a toddler. A toddler is 12-36 months old.
You're seeing the European version of this movie; It was heavily edited, though still a little uncomfortable still with the young Nathalie Portman, but still tastefully done. Called, The Professional (Leon) when originally released here, it left out alot of the courting scenes that are in this version. It has different titles in different regions, but the director version is this one; Luc Besson is a great director - see Lucy next.

When I first saw this movie, it was just "The Professional". It did not have the lolita-esque scenes to make it awkward. I like it more than this version

It was called |The Professional" in the US its a french movie..they cut alot out for US versiion especially all the Jared from subway stuff..but it was vaguely still there but they moved past it quickly. Its hard to find the US version anymore the extended European version or Directors cut seems to be the only thing available. Great reaction and good flick.
