PS, to Blank: this is one of the best edited reactions I've ever watched. Considering a film of this magnitude, I'm glad you managed to get the best parts of a film made of best parts haha
Never again can I resist the urge to emerge from underwater with a similar shake off as Plainview being baptized, nor can I resist an opportunity to yell "Draiiiiinage!" whenever that might present itself.
When this film came out in '07, it melted my 16 year old brain upon seeing it at the movies (I convinced my high school friends to see this with me instead of the National Treasure flick that came out around the same time). As a budding film lover, this was a monumental achievement in cinema, and myself as well as the 30 people in the crowd (my friends excluded) knew it, too. It's a two and a half hour masterclass of cinema, featuring some of the most legitimately remarkable acting, writing, directing, cinematography, costume & production design, and music that I've ever seen. It's a film that really does have a magnetism that sucks you in from the very first piece of music and the shot that follows it, through the slow but sure decent into hell and chaos, all the way to the inevitable void of madness and death. This is Paul Thomas Anderson's undisputed masterpiece, for sure (though my personal favorite of his is Magnolia, which you NEED to see). Get into his work ASAFP, sir!
Magnolia is amazing. The scene where Robard's wife owned that smug pharmacist brings me tears to this day. And I'm a smug borderline sociopath who never cries. It's that f**king good.
Haven’t seen Hard 8, but I’d rate PTA’s movies in this order: There Will Be Blood Boogie Nights The Master Punch Drunk Love Magnolia Phantom Thread Licorice Pizza Inherent Vice No hate to Magnolia. Just speaks to how strong PTA’s filmography is. Good to know after Tarantino hangs it up, we’ll still have at least one true auteur making films.
YES!! Finally! I’m so friggin ready to see how you feel about this masterpiece. It’s one of the few movies that I can simply talk about and get emotional.
Thank you for this. I'm a 42 year old grown ass man. I always worked instead of dealing with my problems. When covid happened, and there wasn't work, all that was left was those voices in my head. 30 years of work, 5 kids, 3 grandkids, my issues that had never been a problem before were too much for everyone I love. I'm still struggling to let them know I'm the same person I was before.
I recall some arguing on IMDB (back when this came out) that "I'm finished" meant Daniel believes he'll go to jail or hang for Ely's death. No way. lol He meant "I'm finished with my meal, come clean up ALL this mess".
This film is perfect. Brother you just found out why Daniel Day Lewis is widely regarded as one of the greatest actors ever. Now watch Gangs of New York for a really terrifying performance by DDL!
Hey Jay, this movie was filmed at the same time as NO Country for old men just a few miles away outside Marfa Texas. So close to each other NCFOM had to stop filming temporarily bc of smoke driving in from the BLOOD fire scene. Hey dude congrats on your 1 year man. Your channel is great. I watch a lot of the reactors and you and only one other answer comments from regular subscribers. Only you and shout out to Jen Murray. I even watch your stuff even if I don't particularly care about. The movie. Keep on keeping on dude. And guard your milkshake Much respect.
Between his roles as Plainview and Bill the Butcher in gangs of New York, Daniel Day Lewis has portrayed two of the purest depictions of man's potential for hyperfocal tunnel vision, being 100% consumed by unwavering darkness, a man willing to do and/or say whatever necessary if it gets him closer to what's desired, no exceptions. I would love to see Lewis vs. Bardem, Plainview vs. Chigurh
It's funny that you pointed out the actor's adherence to maintaining the limp since breaking his leg in the opening sequence, as a literary trope for depicting evil/the devil in Western culture has often been portrayed as having a limp, starting with Vulcan (the Roman god of fire, volcanoes, forging and metals) that is based on the Greek god Hephaestus. Characters with a pronounced limp are often an indicator that they represent some ominous or evil intent, such as Verbal Kint in "The Usual Suspects," who actually for serving the purpose of the cover of his real identity fakes the limp, which is kind of a neat twist. It's worth noting that Daniel Plainview was mining for metal--underground--when he broke his leg to give him that limp (calling back to Vulcan/Hephaestus as a god of metal). Also yeah the kid was a prop, as one of the oil guys says in the beginning that it helps to have a cute face to show potential claimants. The whole family business thing sounds nice but is a lie to put people at ease as Daniel comes in to raid their land and profit, which you obviously got from the jump. Daniel is a movie villain on par with Hannibal Lecter but his crimes are not so "sexy" as eating liver and fava beans, so he kinda goes under the cinematic radar.
Daniel the type of guy that if u know even if u could overpower him physically hes still terrifying to the point ull be up all night shadow boxing waiting for him to come slit your throat knowing hes only just going to pop up when u finally fall asleep & least expect it coming!!!! 💯
Really glad to see you mention the comedic elements of this film. I feel like most people just view it as a brutal drama, but there's some extremely funny shit as well.
I love Daniel stewing in his hatred for the Standard guys while having lunch with HW and finally saying “alright” before getting up to go talk shit. I crack up every time.
J Man, cool reaction bud! DDL's acting is like boss-level. One of the most versatile actors ever! From "The Last of the Mohicans" to "There will be Blood" to "Lincoln". Simply legendary.
You're the only person I've ever seen who catches on to the fact that HW is not his son from the very beginning. Everyone always looks passed the fact that Daniel is never holding him in the beginning, they just take for granted that the other workers are taking care of the baby while Daniel works. But its most likely the man who died in the hole when they struck oil who was the original father.
Yeah, really until I read this comment though. I didn't know that a lot of people didn't figure that out right away. That's crazy to me it seems so obvious.
I had to miss the live viewing because of a home repair, which was a bummer because I would have loved to see the comments in real-time. I didn't know until about a half hour ago that I needed J playing air violin in my life. Daniel Day Lewis smashes every part he plays, and his mustache game was on point. Daniel Plainview must be on a list somewhere of the most notorious movie villains. That a was a man you did NOT want to cross. Great reaction!
Daniel cared about his son. Even after he destroyed the relationship by telling him that he was an orphan there was that shot that showed him thinking back to when he was a little kid. Daniel's fatal flaw, was that he cared about his money, and about being the king of his domain more. He killed the man that was pretending to be his brother because he made him actually develop an attachment which turned out not to be true. Daniel is the ultimate indictment of everything bad about capitalism. His greed and love of power killed him spiritually. "I'm finished," means so many things there at the end. Great film. It's too bad it came out the same year as No Country For Old Men because this would have been the Best Picture winner in any other year.
Your reactions are my favorite. I watch a lot of reaction channels, but I always laugh the hardest with yours. Never quit. Even when you've seen 'em all, and all you have left are more obscure movies. There's always a "Shut the F#ck UP" to be found in every movie!

"Gangs of New York", "Lincoln", "In the name of the Father", "The last of the Mohicans", "The Age of Innocence", "My left foot", Daniel Day Lewis is probably the last of the truly great ones. So glad to be subscribed to your channel, your editing and involvement in the film were great!
This is the best acting in cinema history!! I'm not even a big DDL fan... Not my favorite movie... But I have to give this performance it's due.... There is no better role ever played by anyone... This is acting perfection. Amazing.
Saw this movie in the theaters when it came out. Had no idea how good & dark it was and at the time I lived in Signal Hill! Blew me away to find out my neighborhoods past!! 10/10!
one of the greatest acting performances of all time. DD Lewis is so good at inhabiting and becoming the characters he plays it's scary - like he's possessed.
Great reaction to a great movie! Daniel Day Lewis has played the lead role in 11 films, been nominated for best actor 6 times and won 3. He is the greatest actor in our generation!
The acting in this movie is off the charts. Daniel Day-Lewis is like that for all his roles. But for someone to call this movie the best movie you ever saw? Well...ok. To everyone their own.
I'm convinced anyone who can definitively say that "x" is their favorite movie, probably hasn't seen many movies. There are WAY too many excellent thriller/drama etc type movies to ever be able to pick one and call it the best. I love this movie and would put it somewhere in my top 50. That's about as precise as I could be in ranking it
That last line from Daniel can be interpreted so many ways. Is he finished killing Eli? Finished, in that he knows he's going to jail for murder? Or is he just finished with his meal?
Glad you liked this. It’s one of favorites. Daniels character was based on Dracula. Which why he is so devilish. He also drinks blood on a way because oil is the blood of the earth
This is a really disturbing film. To me, it's the story of a man obsessed with greed, who slowly degenerates in every way possible, until the corrosion drives him insane. Did he abandon the boy because the boy was in his way, or because he knew his influence was toxic? I don't think he ever knew. A masterpiece it may be, I'm not qualified to say. But it is a film that will stay in your mind for a very long time.
It's about the satisfaction of being as petty possible. Daniel never had that moment of "If only I had said that at the time." 😂 You see my boy over there? You look like a FOOL don't you?
@@cowboyschad5x778 A story about winning at all costs, but also losing. In the end Daniel has his "kingdom", and is clearly unfathomably wealthy, but he has lost everything important, he is no longer focused on his work, his son abandons him, and he even loses his "nemesis".
Funny, that when you saw that image of the oil on fire, actually as hell and Daniel Day-Lewis as ''the Devil'', I had a similar experience (or actually still do) when I see Daniel Day-Lewis in ''Gangs of New York'', when he arrives on that horse drawn fire engine, at the street with those houses on fire....
I think Daniel Plainview did care about his adopted son, which is why he sent him off to sign language school. He ditched him on the train because he knew the kid wouldn't go voluntarily. I think he wanted to prepare an heir for the oil empire he was building. I think the end of the movie is what Daniel referred to at the start. What would I do with myself if I wasn't drilling? Now we see. Even on a good day he hated most people and drank too much. At the end he became totally unhinged.
I don’t know if he loved the boy but he definitely cared about him. The way he comforts him when he first goes deaf, the pain in his voice when he realizes he truly abandoned his son when he’s in the church to get the pipeline and when he thinks of their times together when he was young after he basically sends him away cement this.
Sir Daniel Day-Lewis, 3 time Oscar winner, is simply one of the most remarkable actors in cinema history. I hope you react to "Gangs of New York" in which he plays one of the most terrifying & memorable villains ever. It also stars Leonardo DiCaprio & a slew of great character actors including Brendan Gleeson (up for an Oscar this Sunday night). You also must see "My Left Foot" (won his 1st Oscar for that). His portrayal of a man with Cerebral Palsy who became a great writer is astounding. And my personal, sentimental favorite is "The Last of The Mohicans". One of the most beautiful films ever made, from the score/soundtrack to the scenery & cinematography. The history is fascinating & the story is one of love, war & survival. It would be wonderful to see you react to these 3 great films AND to see Blank's editing skills on these, as I know he'd do them justice. Much love to the you & the babies. Give them each a lil scritch for me. 💙🌿💙🌿💙🌿💙🌿💙🌿💙🌿💙
Oh, PTA! My word!! Alright, dude. You gotta check Boogie Nights. Like this movie, Boogie Nights will also stick in your head. The cinematography, cast, acting, soundtrack... all of it is simply amazing.
This movie is AMAZING!!!! What else can you say about it? I knew JL was going to like it. This movie definitely does grab your attention and hold it until the end. My theory of Daniel saying "I'm finished" has always been that Daniel realizes that his life is essentially over. His "son" has left him to start his own company and he has killed Eli in cold blood with a witness. I think Daniel realizes he won't get away with this crime therefore "He's finished." I don't know if I explained that the best way but that's my take on the ending of the movie.
i disagree with your assessment because you are looking at it through your own filter. i.e. a non-psychopath. whereas daniel plainview is so used to doing (and getting away with) whatever he wants. he's not even concerned with consequences. his declaration of being "finished" is that of a fat spoiled child who just finished a large milk shake and is now ready for someone to come clean him up. but he's really finished with destroying his long time rival
I know a number of people who don't see the brilliance on this film. Daniel Day Lewis won the Oscar for this performance. I've loved since the first time I saw it. BadAss!!
I remember the first time I saw this movie and seeing how Daniel was so ruthless all the way to the end. It’s his performance that carries the movie. He was beating Eli with that wooden pin like he had a roach cornered. 💀😂
Perfect timing! I just watched this for the first time a few days ago, love the reaction, I think you would love Daniel Day Lewis's character in Gangs of New York
Eli is played by Paul Dano, who you’ve seen recently as the Riddler in “The Batman” film. He’s also great in “Prisoners” with Hugh Jackman and “Little Miss Sunshine” with Steve Carell from the Office.
Lol, I bought this movie on dvd at Walmart when it first came out, having never heard/seen or read anything about it. I just saw that Daniel Day Lewis was in it. It became one of my favorite movies that night lol
You should watch more Daniel Day-Lewis .. he’s great actor. Check out Gangs of New York, the film ain’t all that but Daniel Day-Lewis is fantastic 👍 or In The Name Of The Father, the true story of the Guildford four .. or anything DDL.. trust me. Great reaction again
Oil and gas business is still gangster af. Daniel Day Lewis is also amazing is "The Age of Innocence" (directed by Martin Scorcese). Paul Thomas Anderson films are uniquely brilliant -- I would highly recommend "Boogie Nights", his first big hit.
DDL simply HAMMERED this movie but also credit to all those who were in the movie also as they did a brilliant job props most of all to DDL but also Paul :) excellent reaction
One of my favorite films, watched with one of my favorite Reactors. This makes being down a whole week with terrible flu worth it. Many thanks to the entire crew, your videos are like hanging out with an old friend.
I don't know why I didn't comment the first time I saw your reaction, but both you and Daniel Day were brilliant!!!! I loved all of the things you reacted to. I couldn't help smiling and laughing and smiling again. Thank you!!!! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Great reaction as always!! Elis milkshake brought him to the yard. If you haven't seen it yet, I hope you check out Gangs of New York also starring DDL
It is a brutal but fascinating film. Your reaction as always is spot on. DDL is a magnificent actor who completely immerses himself in every role. If you haven't already, you just got to watch The Last Of The Mohicans. I think you'll enjoy it.
I hate to say I love this movie, but this review was really good. You did pick a rough one to react here. And yes he did a good job playing the evil man.
I never wanted to see this movie, even around all the hype when it came out, a movie about an oil baron never interested me. But now, all these years later, after watching your hilarious review, I want to watch it. Thank you JL.
Can you believe this shit came out the same year as No Country for Old Men? I think DDL's best character is in Gangs of New York. Butcher Bill does a subtle fourth wall break and it's one of my favorite scenes in any movie ever, right next to the hand fight in Evil Dead 2.
DDL is the best actor of all time. He doesnt do many movies but when he does he wins an oscar for it
As the Murder Whistle would say, "He don't miss."
agreed - he's so good it's scary
DDL is awesome...yet i put him second behind Gary Oldman
He's great, idk if I'd put him on my personal #1, I'd have to think about it, but it's certainly not crazy to have him labeled as best
@RDS Brando is nowhere near DDL

I think Daniel Plainview did care about his adopted son, which is why he sent him off to sign language school. He ditched him on the train because he knew the kid wouldn't go voluntarily.
I think he wanted to prepare an heir for the oil empire he was building.
I think the end of the movie is what Daniel referred to at the start. What would I do with myself if I wasn't drilling? Now we see. Even on a good day he hated most people and drank too much. At the end he became totally unhinged.
i only recently discovered the Teapot Dome scandel did not involve tea!
"I drink your milkshake, I drink it up!"
I don’t know if he loved the boy but he definitely cared about him. The way he comforts him when he first goes deaf, the pain in his voice when he realizes he truly abandoned his son when he’s in the church to get the pipeline and when he thinks of their times together when he was young after he basically sends him away cement this.
This is one of those movies I’ll watch whenever it comes on. Masterpiece of atmosphere through soundtrack, tension. Chef’s kiss.
When I watched this by myself I didn’t really laugh much but when I watched it with you, JL it was hilarious! 😂

46:25 the perfect response to a grown man screaming "don't bully me!"
Whether you love or hate this film, you cannot deny it’s a great one (for the record I love it) Great reaction by the way👏
Oh, PTA! My word!! Alright, dude. You gotta check Boogie Nights. Like this movie, Boogie Nights will also stick in your head. The cinematography, cast, acting, soundtrack... all of it is simply amazing.
Thank you for the reaction man, one of my favorite movies and im glad you where able to keep up with the steady reactions. I appreciate you
3:58 your dog's like "are you swearing bro seriously?"
Don’t care what anyone says, this is one of the top 5 greatest acting performances of all time
This movie is AMAZING!!!! I think Daniel realizes he won't get away with this crime therefore "He's finished." I don't know if I explained that the best way but that's my take on the ending of the movie.
dead on
@eZTarg8mk2 thank you.
i disagree with your assessment because you are looking at it through your own filter. i.e. a non-psychopath. whereas daniel plainview is so used to doing (and getting away with) whatever he wants. he's not even concerned with consequences. his declaration of being "finished" is that of a fat spoiled child who just finished a large milk shake and is now ready for someone to come clean him up. but he's really finished with destroying his long time rival
“Lawless”
With Tom Hardy and Shia LeBeouf with a great supporting cast, is amazing
Similar gritty feel.
Daniel Day Lewis is an amazing actor. He does amazing in Lincoln and Gangs of New York as well as Last of the Mohicans
I know a number of people who don't see the brilliance on this film. Daniel Day Lewis won the Oscar for this performance. I've loved since the first time I saw it. BadAss!!
“I wonder if he can do that with my stomach fat. “ I felt that in my soul.
I remember the first time I saw this movie and seeing how Daniel was so ruthless all the way to the end.
It’s his performance that carries the movie.
He was beating Eli with that wooden pin like he had a roach cornered. 💀😂
That “let’s get it” moment was hysterical. You so silly! I was bopping with you at first but when you did the silent scream…I cackled!😂💀
Perfect timing! I just watched this for the first time a few days ago, love the reaction, I think you would love Daniel Day Lewis's character in Gangs of New York
You are by far my favorite person on the internet. Keep doing what you’re doing. I work on Family Guy and we all talk about your videos all the time.
That means a lot to me. I truly appreciate it 🙏🏾🙏🏾. And that’s awesome that you work on Family Guy. I bet that’s cool as hell
Eli is played by Paul Dano, who you’ve seen recently as the Riddler in “The Batman” film. He’s also great in “Prisoners” with Hugh Jackman and “Little Miss Sunshine” with Steve Carell from the Office.
First saw him as a kid in L.I.E. with Brian Cox. Not surprised how well he has done since then.
Feel better!
Always a performance of great intensity with Daniel Day-Lewis. I enjoyed your commentary.
I don't know why I didn't comment the first time I saw your reaction, but both you and Daniel Day were brilliant!!!! I loved all of the things you reacted to. I couldn't help smiling and laughing and smiling again. Thank you!!!! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
I'd love to see your reaction to Gangs of New York. Daniel Day Lewis is masterful as Bill "the Butcher".
He's not a conman, just a business man.
Great movie. If you liked this and Daniel Day Lewis, check out Gangs of New York. It's one of my top favorite movies ever.
"I wonder what he said to him"--I think it was: "One day I'm going to beat you senseless with a bowling pin."
I'm so happy you got around to this film. I think without a doubt this is my most favorite movie of all time.
Oh man! My favorite film of all time, and the best of the 21st century (so far). I wish more YT reactors would watch it. Absolute brilliance.
The acting in this movie is top notch.
That Eli Manning shot hahah that's my quarterback but 😅😢 fax his derp face was goated
Daniel Day Lewis is the goat...wish he hadn't retired from acting
A tour de force in Acting!! And an equal reaction!! Love you, copilots, and Blank!..if there are others not mentioned , love you too! ..lol! 👍👍
Daniel Day Lewis is such a fantastic actor! Fun watching you react to him!
Can you believe this shit came out the same year as No Country for Old Men?
I think DDL's best character is in Gangs of New York. Butcher Bill does a subtle fourth wall break and it's one of my favorite scenes in any movie ever, right next to the hand fight in Evil Dead 2.
My favorite movie of all time! Can't wait to see your reaction!
Did you see Gangs of New York? Another Daniel Day-Lewis classic
