Hello fellow former chao obsessor. I was just scouring the internet for chao garden inspired games and I thought _someone_ had to have made something like it already. Couldn't find much though. Glad to find someone finally doing so. As for what you had asked, I feel that version 3 and 4 work the best. The final 3D-esque one looks promising but I can't comment much on it with how little there was. But I will say that it does seem like it would be fitting if you used that to emulate what made the chao garden work. A main game and then that little island to come and check on on the side. I had the same realization as you when playing Chao Resort Island a few years back. The chao garden doesn't work in a vacuum. Good on you for realizing that. Love the name Fuzzite btw
P.S. I can see that little island working with version 4 as the main little area where you keep the rest of your fuzzites as you go out to explore with the one you have following you. I think you've got good stuff that you can draw from all of your attempts here to make something great.
I imagine the worst part about trying to finish Fuzzities is that it's in an identity crisis (by that, I mean that it jumps from variation to variation because you don't exactly know what it's supposed to be). But this issue is already partially solved by having a base concept, and now I hope that the rest of the issue gets solved. I hope this experience won't be mirrored onto mine because currently I'm also having to remake a game from Scratch because the current version didn't work out. The main difference between your situation and mine is that my game has already proven to have a rock-solid foundation because of how much fun everyone including me had playing it, but it turned out that I reduced the possibilities so much that I can't extend the game beyond 2 minutes, so now I'm making a 3D version of the 2D game because the 3D would make (hopefully many) challenges possible that won't be possible in 2D, even with unchanged controls.
As someone who's been writing a story for almost 20 years now without making any part of it public ever I can SO relate to the nostalgia pit dragging down the progress. It was truly painful to ditch most of the original characters in favor of better ones a decade after I started but the story really benefited so much from it.
I really think that your idea of fuzzites really kind of works best if it isn't the sole focus of a game. I'm pretty sure that the reason the Chao Garden is so beloved isn't just because it's raising creatures, but that it's a different experience and feels like it's separate from the rest of the game. Making it so the fuzzite portion of a game can affect the other portion, whatever it may be, and vice versa seems like it would be the best way to execute it.
A successor to Chao Garden has been one of my dream games since I was little, too! Best of luck to you on Fuzzites! I hope one of it's iterations gets a full commercial release!
that’s so interesting i’ve also always loved the chao garden from that game! i couldn’t even remember which sonic it was for the longest time, i rented it from blockbuster for a month when i was maybe eight but i kept trying to remember and described it to people… as like “the one where you can get chaos as pets and if you try to drown them they become water chaos” lmao there really was something special about it though! good luck on fuzzites i would love to play :)
One of the creators of Nuclear Throne and Super Crate Box (from Vlambeer), did a talk a few years ago about making games. He said something to the effect of "the reason you can't make the game in your head is because the 'game' in your head is an idea --- not a game." Our minds do a really good job of tricking us into thinking that we have the whole picture, and that that picture is an accurate reflection of how it will work reality. But, if you stop to think about it, neither of those points are really true. Considering this wisdom could be applied to essentially *any* creative pursuit, I think that this was one of the most profound bits of wisdom I've ever heard...
Good job man, glad you’re clearly enjoying the process! You’ve clearly improved a lot over time! The idea of the pet changing based on what you do sounds like a mechanic I think was in the old Fable games (maybe the wrong name, but it was generic, if you were good or evil, but you could massively expand on that.
I have been waiting like 20 years for another Chao Garden. I love the Animal Crossing like concept of fishing, farming, doing tasks and working in a little community and how that could affect the Fuzzites. Along with selling and eating crops, maybe you could use crops as power ups for your Fuzzites, bait for catching specific types of fish, or even a self power up? I imagined a 3rd separate component to the world which is the wild where you have to fight enemies top down like old school Zelda to get something akin to Chao drives and maybe find Fuzzite eggs on rare occasions or even use the Fuzzites to do or help you battle.
Loved the video. Seeing the Chao Garden took me BAAAAAACk. I really liked the "single-screen" Game Jam version, the art style was "on-point" and it looked very concise. I could see that version of Fuzzites being an "idle-ish" game for mobile (a virtual pet I guess), or a sub-game within a bigger game, akin to the original Chao Garden. The "Big Game" could even be a 3D thing and then you go into an "in-game Game Boy-like apparatus" to play Fuzzites.
I think you should make it a multiplayer, I really love the battle system so it would be cool to trade and battle other players. Thats what makes a game like Pokemon so fun for me, its the social interaction and the grinding to beat other players, it really gives the feeling of accomplishment. And that is what makes a good game for me.
The mmo one does look really nice, I want to play it! :D I'm also really glad I watched this video. I sometimes wish I didnt give up on projects from the past, but this video shows it's never too late to pick it back up again
Congrats on the sponsor! I have actually been working on my dream game for a little while now and I'm afraid it's, just like you said, too much for 1 person, but I'm also having trouble letting it go 😂
Ah, this video is very relatable. My dream game was something I cooked up around 5 years ago and I've made numerous attempts at it. The thing holding me back the most is my own ability to focus on a project. At this point, I just want to get a combat prototype up and running and while I've had a couple attempts that got pretty close, none of them has become something playable. I still wanna keep at it, though! I don't think I'll ever stop trying.
You need to finish the game!!! the chao garden was one of the most fun side mechanics in games, i absolutely loved it at the time, and would definely would love to play a more recent and upgraded version of it :D
BRUH.... YOU STARTED TRYING TO MAKE YOUR DREAM GAME IN 2010 BUT...that's when i was born damnit and that too this video is 7 days before my bday... btw THANK YOU SO MUCH you have literally inspired me to destroy my discourage and create more courage
The online one was the most interesting in my opinion, the combat and all that combined with the rpg style gives it something more to do and a better touch! Also great vídeo!
Would be an awesome version of what puffles could have been. Like club penguin but the igloos are personal farms, and you could set up your own shops in the towns! Great now I have to learn how to make that...
I admire the dedication over the years. My issue is always that the dream game I have in my head is realistically way too big. I need to find the core aspects of it and drop all the filler
I think the MMO version had the most promise. Not necessarily the multiplayer platform, but the premise of having a little critter that grows in certain ways depending on what you do along side it to become better at solving certain puzzles/fighting a certain way. The puzzle-like combat is also very interesting. It could push the player to evolve their critter to perform different movements in battle to overcome increasingly difficult puzzle fights.
It's a cool idea and one that I'd love to see fleshed out however like you mention at the star, it's more of a side mission that is added to another game. So in a way you could add fuzzites to any game you want
i like the aesthetics of the 3d version and version #5, I feel like this game could totally work with the fuzzites as the focus if you make it into a mobile game (a game that is designed to be "left alone"- a game that you need to come back to)
I'll get back to mine one day. Mostly worked on it as a hobby project. I found one of the biggest time consumers was pixel art, still got to finish the animations for 36 unique variants that are 64x64. Maybe after I finish all these assets for a UE4 project I'm collabing on.
I think you should definitely finish your third version of the game. The top down one. I really love the idea of it being kind of like Harvest Moon or Animal Crossing. I think that one would be super successful. It'd probably be kind of like Slime Rancher.
Wow, I was also inspired to make games by a chao garden obsession. I remember it being the first feature I’d check for in ever new Sonic game. I never made it much further than Gamemaker 7 though. I’m impressed your project files survived!
I love exploration in games. This is what motivates me in any game. So I like the «gather ressources, explore and pet my creatures» the most. I am not an online type of player but this version was very cool too. Also very inspiring to watch and listen because I just starting my own journey with game dev and making a game, that I want to play, is so satisfying. But I see your point that the mechanics you like are not meant to be the main mechanic of the game. I will take this into my game design process. Very helpful and inspiring video.
I would really like to see the MMO version. As a kid, I really liked the Chao Garden and spent a lot of time petting them. I liked the one from Sonic Adventure 2 the most, where the Chao could go to heaven or hell depending on which character you used to pet them, and they could wear some accessories. Good luck if you choose to develop this idea, I will certainly play it.
Yeah I'd say you need some sort of regular game, and the fuzzites can be very rare creatures you can randomly find, win from competitions or get rewarded from quests, but they are very rare. Then the fuzzites maybe have some buffs, light red maybe gives extra fire protection or whatnot and follows you around. Then collecting and breeding to get one with better buffs would be a side project.
seems like when you finally create this game, it will be amazing. you clearly have a lot of passion. you are willing to wait until you get it right which will definitely pay off.
Hey, if you want a game to maybe use as reference, have you ever played Slime Rancher? Despite the name, the ranch part of it is more of a secondary mechanic then the main focus of the game. Most of your time in that game is spent exploring the world and it's surprisingly good level design, so you can find new slimes for your farm.
@@Goodgis That's true, when you put it like that. The mechanics of using the different properties of the slimes to explore could come in handy, though.
wtf?? i've also been trying to make a chao garden successor ever since i was a kid as well! this video gave me motivation to keep working on my take on the mechanic.
I identify with this. I have my own dream game idea, and even after around 8 years, I still want to seek it. But for a long time, I couldn't manage to make it more viable in any form - from the game mechanics to the characters design. But I learned a lot of things, and am still learning. And I somewhat decided that I prefer a finished project that ends having some differences to the original idea, rather than a precious dream that will never make it into reality. Right now I know it's gonna take quite some time, and want to start smaller projects while progressing at the original more slowly. But bit by bit, I know it will come to fruition, and I wish to take the best out of this journey. I hope everyone there having difficult with their projects can have a nice journey on life while working in them too.
I LOVED the Chao Garden from Sonic. One of the most prominent memories of my childhood. I found myself playing that game ONLY for the Chao Garden. The minigames you could do with them was fun. Maybe do some of those along with the combat system?
Make sure to check out Core! :D

I'mma be honest, the chao garden was my favorite aspect of that game. The only reason I did anything else was to get stuff for the choas.
Heck yeah!
I think you should mention how you’ve been working on this idea for 11 years in the thumbnail
I tried but there wasn't enough room haha
I really think that your idea of fuzzites really kind of works best if it isn't the sole focus of a game. I'm pretty sure that the reason the Chao Garden is so beloved isn't just because it's raising creatures, but that it's a different experience and feels like it's separate from the rest of the game. Making it so the fuzzite portion of a game can affect the other portion, whatever it may be, and vice versa seems like it would be the best way to execute it.
Thanks for sharing!
...finally, a devlog that speaks to me. 11 years, 1 dream, countless different attempts. I feel you so hard.
Haha, it's difficult!
A successor to Chao Garden has been one of my dream games since I was little, too!
Best of luck to you on Fuzzites! I hope one of it's iterations gets a full commercial release!
Thank you!
I’ve always dreamed about making my dream game, and then I realized I don’t have money or time.
Nah, you can do it! :D You just gotta make the time.
that’s so interesting i’ve also always loved the chao garden from that game! i couldn’t even remember which sonic it was for the longest time, i rented it from blockbuster for a month when i was maybe eight but i kept trying to remember and described it to people… as like “the one where you can get chaos as pets and if you try to drown them they become water chaos” lmao there really was something special about it though! good luck on fuzzites i would love to play :)
Ngl this game looked and sound good even bofore the mmo
Haha thanks!
That's a great piece of advice! Thanks for sharing.
fuzites reminds me of club penguin puffles...
Heck yeah!
I'm also really into the online idea, can't wait to hear more about this game!
Thanks!
goodgis wut about dewdrop??
Wishlist it here: store.steampowered.com/app/1444080/Dewdrop_Dynasty/
@@Goodgis OH MY GODDDDD
Good job man, glad you’re clearly enjoying the process! You’ve clearly improved a lot over time! The idea of the pet changing based on what you do sounds like a mechanic I think was in the old Fable games (maybe the wrong name, but it was generic, if you were good or evil, but you could massively expand on that.
Haha it kind of does! :D
i added a wikitubia for goodgis :)
edit: it got deleted
Wuuuut! Post a link :D
never mind i just checked and it got deleted for some reason :(
I have been waiting like 20 years for another Chao Garden.
SCOPE CREPEE!!1
XD
Loved the video. Seeing the Chao Garden took me BAAAAAACk. I really liked the "single-screen" Game Jam version, the art style was "on-point" and it looked very concise. I could see that version of Fuzzites being an "idle-ish" game for mobile (a virtual pet I guess), or a sub-game within a bigger game, akin to the original Chao Garden. The "Big Game" could even be a 3D thing and then you go into an "in-game Game Boy-like apparatus" to play Fuzzites.
:D
I think you should make it a multiplayer, I really love the battle system so it would be cool to trade and battle other players. Thats what makes a game like Pokemon so fun for me, its the social interaction and the grinding to beat other players, it really gives the feeling of accomplishment. And that is what makes a good game for me.
I completely agree!
Really cool to see your progression through all those versions
I appreciate it!
The mmo one does look really nice, I want to play it! :D
I'm also really glad I watched this video. I sometimes wish I didnt give up on projects from the past, but this video shows it's never too late to pick it back up again
Glad you enjoyed it!
Congrats on the sponsor!
I have actually been working on my dream game for a little while now and I'm afraid it's, just like you said, too much for 1 person, but I'm also having trouble letting it go 😂
Thanks so much! :D And never give up! It's hard work but it will be worth it in the end.
Go for it! :D
You need to finish the game!!! the chao garden was one of the most fun side mechanics in games, i absolutely loved it at the time, and would definely would love to play a more recent and upgraded version of it :D
I will! :D
BRUH.... YOU STARTED TRYING TO MAKE YOUR DREAM GAME IN 2010 BUT...that's when i was born damnit and that too this video is 7 days before my bday...
btw THANK YOU SO MUCH you have literally inspired me to destroy my discourage and create more courage
That's awesome! You got this!
The online one was the most interesting in my opinion, the combat and all that combined with the rpg style gives it something more to do and a better touch!
Also great vídeo!
Couldn't agree more! Also thanks!
Nice vid, and i loved all the versions, i hope that someday you be able to finish the game
That's the plan! Thanks so much! :D
Would be an awesome version of what puffles could have been. Like club penguin but the igloos are personal farms, and you could set up your own shops in the towns! Great now I have to learn how to make that...
That would be cool
I really like how #5 looks, really nice colors
Thanks! :D
I admire the dedication over the years. My issue is always that the dream game I have in my head is realistically way too big. I need to find the core aspects of it and drop all the filler
That's that hardest part, but I believe we can do it! :D
That's a great point! :D
That is actually so cool
I like the graphics of version 3 the most, i love the night mechanic where you can get some night themed fuzzites
Thanks! :D
Exactly on the 10 minute mark. You know it’s going to be good
Haha, I tried.
It's a cool idea and one that I'd love to see fleshed out however like you mention at the star, it's more of a side mission that is added to another game. So in a way you could add fuzzites to any game you want
I love that idea!
i like the aesthetics of the 3d version and version #5, I feel like this game could totally work with the fuzzites as the focus if you make it into a mobile game (a game that is designed to be "left alone"- a game that you need to come back to)
Definitely!
I'll get back to mine one day. Mostly worked on it as a hobby project. I found one of the biggest time consumers was pixel art, still got to finish the animations for 36 unique variants that are 64x64. Maybe after I finish all these assets for a UE4 project I'm collabing on.
XD
I think you should definitely finish your third version of the game. The top down one. I really love the idea of it being kind of like Harvest Moon or Animal Crossing. I think that one would be super successful. It'd probably be kind of like Slime Rancher.
I would probably try to avoid Slime Rancher because I'm not a huuuuge fan of the mechanics, but for sure!
Wow, I was also inspired to make games by a chao garden obsession. I remember it being the first feature I’d check for in ever new Sonic game. I never made it much further than Gamemaker 7 though. I’m impressed your project files survived!
That's awesome! And I'm surprised they lasted as well haha
Version #4 is my favorite. I would buy it, it looks really fun
Thanks, I agree!
I live the idea of fuzzites as an mmo rpg, it looked really fleshed out and I think its the best concept out of all of them!
Thanks so much! :D
Thanks for sharing!
Thanks so much! :D
I think version 4 is the best in my opinion, hope you keep working on it and make it perfect. would definitely love to see the finished project!
Thanks! Will do!
This was such a fun video to watch!
Thanks! :D
I really like that grid battle style!!!!!!!! I just started working with Godot - yesterday - and I think I wanna mess with that as well.
That's awesome! :D
That's not a bad idea! :D
Version #3 is the best I love the art and feel. I would definitely enjoy playing that!
:D
seems like when you finally create this game, it will be amazing. you clearly have a lot of passion. you are willing to wait until you get it right which will definitely pay off.
I appreciate that! :D
Can't wait when i am finish with my Bachelorthesis and can work on games again - keep goind dude, great vids
Thanks so much! You got this, man!
Thanks! Yeah, I've played Slime Rancher before but I would say that's less of a creature raiser and more focused on money. :D
@@Goodgis That's true, when you put it like that. The mechanics of using the different properties of the slimes to explore could come in handy, though.
wtf?? i've also been trying to make a chao garden successor ever since i was a kid as well! this video gave me motivation to keep working on my take on the mechanic.
Go for it! :D
The online Version sounds cool! I hope your super successful man!
Hey, I wish you luck on your project! :D
That's amazing gamedev journey, hope your game will be success.
I hope so too! Thanks!
The first time I saw this channel I thought it would have millions of subs, underrated channel
I LOVED the Chao Garden from Sonic. One of the most prominent memories of my childhood. I found myself playing that game ONLY for the Chao Garden. The minigames you could do with them was fun. Maybe do some of those along with the combat system?
Heck yeah!
