    From experience I can say that it's difficult to ignore all this pushed and often payed message by top hiking influencers. Although I'm not the youngest guy I fell for it. Reflection comes with experience. And as you said, we don't have to copy anybody and need to find the kit that suits us. I agree that we're different so are our choices and it's important (I think) to be less focused on gear and more on our shared love to being on the trail. Some interesting choices you've made and you made me think... Thanks for sharing. Cheers, Seb.

    Hi Snowy, I was the guy out on my exercise routine you met at the start of the SUW. I did it East to West in 2013 as I like to walk homewards. You were recording that morning so I kept our chat brief. I've also walked the CWT bothways and find that the most challenging trail to do. I've thru-hiked from Cape Wrath to Mull of Galloway and John o' Groats to Mull of Galloway so it's pleasing to meet others who are out there doing the trails, especially thru-hikers! I've never recorded any of my hikes but I enjoy watching others and am looking forward to your experience of the SUW. You're ten days into it now and hopefully the conditions have been favourable, be safe.

    • @snowymatrix
      @snowymatrix  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Frank, your advice to stay at the beehive bothy was spot on! I really needed the water supply (stream) the bothy had! The first few days were really hot and I was having problems staying hydrated as water was hard to come by. The last few days have been low clouds and drizzle so normal conditions and plenty of water. You've done some fantastic trails there! I'm also on Instagram/Facebook as Snowymatrix and have posted some quick videos of some of my wild camps on trail for a snapshot of the trail so far. All the best!👍🍺

    Hi Snowy. I once purchased a pair of Saloman Quest 4D GTX boots for a BTB C2C and Offas dyke hikes over 5 weeks. Worst decision ever on footwear, as soon as it rained heavy on day 2 the boots filled with water, and let me tell you Trenchfoot was very close. My boots had no goretex obviously they were CRAP. Lessons learned for me ,Hope yours went OK.

    Excellent kit breakdown Snowy, I'm floating around the 6-7kg mark so I'm not UL either. I've got the same w/p trousers and sleeping mat. Might get myself one of these pee bottles instead of an empty Lucozade bottle. 😁
    Interesting theory with protecting yourself. Good luck for the SUW and CWT. 👍🏼

    • @snowymatrix
      @snowymatrix  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      A lucuzade bottle ain't wide enough for my liking!😂 I'm not a fan of the UL style or the way it's preached as the only way to walk long distance trails - it's not. I hope it stays a theory and I don't have to test it on trail but I don't camp anywhere near Kinlocheven now on the two times I've done the WHW since the tent incident! And like I told Gaz Outdoors I'm only 5,7 so have to fight dirty!🍺😁

    Really interesting, especially for planning 2 or 3 week trips which I have not done for a long while. Loved the Nitecore p18 story and a nice piece of kit, its expensive but I guess it could save your life one day. Thanks for sharing and I hope your SUW trip goes well, atb Simon

      @snowymatrix  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Simon, yeah it's a bit long this video I try to keep my videos under 20 minutes and closer to 10 but it's probably the last gear video I'll do! You're right the SOS and becon mode on the torch could one day be critical so what's a few extra quid here and there! Thanks 👍😁

      Hello Imran, yes I still have my Paramo jacket which I used on past adventures on the West Highland way, Hebridean Way and on the Cape Wrath trail so have no worries in recommending Paramo's system as it works! I had met a German girl and wild camped in a forest just off the trail and close to the town of Kinlochleven with her. At about 3am I was awoken by something banging on the tent. I got my high powered torch out and put it on strobe in an attempt to scare what I thought was an animal away. I then heard a voice shout open up! I did and this man was standing outside! He asked me if I was on the WHW which I replied yes and after looking inside my tent from a distance he said let me shake your hand which I did and he trotted off into the forest with 1000 lumens of my torch lighting him up. Very surreal moment!! After he left the German girl opened her tent still clutching her big knife and told me he had been banging on her tent first but she ignored it and got her weapon out! Anyway, I didn't sleep anymore that night and got dressed and booted up and kept watch in case he tried to return. In the morning we talked about going back into town and reporting it to the police but didn't. A year later I was on the WHW again near the area where we camped and saw the notice that river bailiffs patrol the area 24 hours a day to catch poachers and it all made sense!
