“I’ve found these hi hats and I kinda liked them. They’re called Paiste Light Dark Hat. I don’t even know what series that is. They sound a little bit tinny. I like these for this band. I change hats all the time. The ones I use at home, Terry Bozzio gave me a pair of his Sabians when we played together, they’re beautiful. Sometimes the music calls for 15″ Giant Beats, or 16″ or 18″. I went through quite a few with King Crimson. Like, Paiste Sound Edge 2002 and things.
Paiste gave me a prototype, I don’t know if it’s available in the market. It’s really unusual. They call it a splash, but it’s really heavy, almost like a bell. I’ve gone to smaller cymbals on this particular tour: a Paiste 16″ Singnature Fast Crash, and 8″ Signature Splash on top of it, a 20″ Paiste Modern Essentials (the one that Vinnie helped with), a 19″ Paiste Signature Full Crash, a 10″ splash, a Paiste Noise Works + 14″ china stack,
Paiste just sent me a gong. It happened a few times at the last rehearsal that Rober Fripp said: ‘Do you have a gong?’. I’ve got samples and I did use them, but I said: ‘Let’s call Paiste’ and they sent me one.
I’ve been using Tama pedals trying to imitate Gavin, who has the best feet of anybody around. I’ve seen Cobham play in cowboy boots, I’ve seen Danny Carey play barefoot. It all comes down to the brain, doesn’t it?
This is a new kit I got maybe two years ago. It’s a DW Collector’s Mahogany/Cherry. Garrison from DW told me they’d only made two at that point - one for Don Henley, and the asked if I wanted the other one. I let him choose and took this one. It’s a 10″, 12″ and I went to 15″. Gavin’s playing one and I thought: ‘Why not? Since they’re making me drums, I’ll try a 15″.’ There’s an 18″ floor tom as well. I use the slightly heavier Evans heads - EC2. The kick is a 22″ and the snare came with the kit. I go back and forth between this and one of Gavin’s signature Sonor Protean with small snare wires. It’s really quite good for this music. I think it sits in our music.
I have a Roland V-Drums cymbal pad tied to a Roland SPD-SX sampler. The sampler carries a lot of guitar parts when I play with Stick Men with Tony Levin. In Crimson, our friend Alex at DGM gave me access to King Crimson’s 1970s tape vault, so I pulled some samples off of the original recordings. I’ve got some of Jamie Muir’s sounds, some are my imitations of his sounds, or the begining of ‘Larks’ Tongues in Aspic’ - I just took that right off the CD." - เพลง

Pat really is one of the innovators at the forefront of music today, technically he may not be a prodigy with flurries of 128th notes, but he is such a humble guy that he's put his whole life into learning and researching. I saw him live quite a few times now with KC and other acts through the last 20+ years and he's been ever evolving. Plus he's so enthusiastic about his art that he would stop packing up his drums after a 2hours+ concert (he does the job himself in smaller gigs) and happily explain you the finer details of his bass drum mute or just exchange pleasantries. A great guy, really.
I had a similar experience with him after a Stick Men show. A beautiful man.

Pat's my favorite drummer of all time. He's a very intelligent and talented drummer.

I like how the drummers who played for Zappa keep in touch and they all compare gear and sounds to each other. Probably the most interesting collection of percussion of any drummer I've seen.

This is BY FAR the coolest drum kit rundown I have ever seen
Absolutely LOVE @ 10:22 & 10:27 - can you imagine those used in a tune?! Pat is the whole reason I got interested in playing drums (after hearing "Let's Pretend" by Al Jarreau in the 80s, and of course, loved his contribution to Mr. Mister's stuff, too) ... Saw them in person in '86 & '87 & he was very engaging on stage (we were right at the front - he obliged to come over and sign an autograph for me between songs), as well as when we caught him on his way upstairs after a show at The Palace in Hollywood. VERY very friendly, open, engaging - really made an impression on me as the others were quite reserved, ... even MIA - (well, Farris was... )... Anyhoo, this is a GREAT video.. I love seeing close-up, backstage views drummer set-ups, and Pat's is always ever-evolving. Great guy, Great Drummer! - self-taught, no less!!!
What I love about Pat is that he isn't a "brand slave". If he finds something that sounds good, he uses it, doesn't matter where it's from.
I've had the chance to meet him and get a picture with him. He is a great guy. Wish I could've talked to him more.
Pat is a "Percussive Executive Chef" ... and it's fascinating to hear how his interior sonic dialogue translates into these experimental/perplexing/delicious percussive excursions...

I was at a stickmen show. I was 16 among a bunch of 40-60 year olds and I swear to god he was just staring straight at me. Probably cause I was staring at him and what he was doing because I’m a drummer and was getting my face blown off by the insane shit he did.

Power to Believe (King Crimson), is one of my favorite CD's. Pat's playing is VERY impressive and leaves me wanting to hear more stuff like he did on Power to Believe. In fact, all the guys on that album played some unbelievable riffs in places of the song you wouldn't normally expect. Cheers!

You would not believe how much you highness King Crimson is deeply beloved here in Mexico. When they come (every four or five years) ticketts are run out in the first two hours they are on sale. In 2018 tour they announced two concerts: they gave five.

Interesting side detail:
Pat went on to perform with a number of other artists, including of course a lot of touring with King Crimson over 2-3 decades. He's had a pretty interesting career and can really handle some extreme contrasts with grace.
Anyway, Pat played drums on 2 songs that are, musically/emotionally quite opposite:
With Mr. Mister, he played on Kyrie, which is a song of light and hope.
With King Crimson, he played on, among others, the very dark and ominous Level 5 (a brilliant composition, BTW).
Level 5 sounds like an anthem from hell, and has scary qualities not unlike classics such as Night On Bald Mountain, Danse Macabre, or even classic horror movie/sci-fi music.
2 more opposite pieces of music could hardly be found. Yet Pat handles the drum part of each with complete ease and punctuative mastery.

Kind of him to tone down on the brass. We were front row in front of him and he personally removed 18 000 Hz from our hearing forever. I mentioned it later...he was most gracious.
