Is it just me or do percussionists just use absolutely random adjectives to describe their instruments like “Oh wow this snare sounds really greasy” “Hmm, my cymbal here has a nice, purple sound.” They have played us for fools
I bought a Zildjian K dry ride cymbal in about 1990 and the salesman said "you're gonna break hearts with that."' He was right. It just cut through everything, eventually I sold it for more than I paid and I don't drum anymore after accumulating too much hearing damage. It was too dark to crash and had a beautiful bell sound. Hope someone is still playing it now.
"I don't drum anymore after accumulating too much hearing damage" That's sad, bro. I started wearing hearing protection at age 30 and don't have it nearly as bad as some guys I know. They say John Entwistle bassist for The Who was mostly deaf in his later years, but could still tune his bass strictly from the vibrations in front of his stacks.
"I don't wanna know of a cymbal drier than this, it would just sound like you're tapping on a wooden table" I think it might be an idea to contact one of the wood turning channels and have them make a wooden cymbal :D
Actually, he has a video for cymbals to not wake the neighbors. They’re all perforated so it’s more a mesh. You can practice the feel of a cymbal without getting the police called on you.
Had an ancient cymbal about as dry as the last one back in HS. It was completely normal looking, asides from it being so coated in dust from the back of the drum closet that you could not clean it off. Brought out for a jazz rehearsal once. Director and the rest of the band said to never do that again.
Can I just say, I subbed specifically because I love this guy's energy. He has the energy of Mr Beast, lacks any oversaturated sarcasm, doesn't have the dry feel of watching a video essay (TH-camrs who have the feel in their voice where you can tell it is being read off of a script, like a lack of confidence) and honestly, you can audibly track the passion in this man's voice. This guy just loves cymbals, and he shows it so confidently. I love this guy, instant sub. Also, I love the addition of the old timey music. The old music that you get in 1940's TV ads combined with this guy's voice and the chaos that occurs in this video is such an entertaining mix. It feels like it should be a serious lecture about cymbals and what it means when someone calls one dry or washy, but the chaos and the inflection of this guy make it sound more genuine and passionate. In conclusion, this video is a great example of a good video essay, it feels loved, passionate, upbeat, and energetic, as if this guy just really fucking loves cymbals and he uploaded this video and made this channel specifically to show us that. God-tier video, 8194/10.

I LOVE that bonk… I get your passion Your videos are always so funny and entertaining, and manages to get me so interested in something I would never think to be interested in.
There're two ways I contextualized the term 'dry' with respect to cymbals. The first was by pouring things into a bowl - if you pour water, it sloshes around and takes forever to settle and is really active, but if you pour like sand or something, it just kinda sits there. The other one was farts. Wet ones gonna be noticeable for a lot longer for everyone involved, and you need to washy your pants afterward.
I have to say, I love that 21" special dry part 2, the crash is for crash, the china is for crash, the open high hat is for crash, the ride is for tone. You wanna be able to tell that if you smash a crash and ride together, you can hear the difference. Like, the ride is the bass cymbal of cymbals so it's gotta thud and swim.
Often times when I am playing drums with my band I wish I could play bass or guitar instead so I could move around the stage and stuff, I can play bass so sometimes being a Drummer at a gig feels really limited, but this channel makes me feel proud to be a Drummer honestly, every time I watch one of these videos drums don't feel limiting anymore and I remember I CAN play drums while having fun, even if I'm not moving around.
Well, it's wet because the sound lasts longer travelling further and dry because sounds travel less leaving a more bonk or think sound! It's awesome we use it in pianos too!

I don't know much about cymbals, but I do understand some physics. I think the reason one cymbal sounding more dry than the other "identical" one is because the more dry cymbal has a lot of smaller pits, absorbing the vibrations faster. The difference is very visible.

The Paiste Signature Dry Ride is exceptionally dry as well, although that Zildjian might have it beat. The Paiste has a ridiculously clean and clear bell though, so if you're looking for stick definition and a great bell, find one of those (have fun finding one though, they've been discontinued for a long time!).

I’ve never paid attention enough to realize the HUGE difference there is between cymbal sounds. It seems like it comes down to flat/sharp or sustain/mute.
