Triple-A, THIS is what I have been waiting to see come to Sierra Leone. Many other countries are moving towards locally resourced construction, and these types of bricks are the future. To see this in Sierra Leone warms my heart and makes me very happy. This type of building is economically sound and climate-friendly. The benefits are tremendous - cost is a critical example. You save at construction and during the life of the house. These blocks are excellent at holding and conducting heat - they store heat during the day and release it at night. So air conditioning (during the day) and heating (at night) is unnecessary, saving the owner costs and can help our future electric grids. Plus, they have a much less impact on our environment. Locally sourced earth/clay increases employment opportunities at home and reduces long-range costs (cement production) and other supply chain impacts on the climate.
Can you build a skyscraper with this technology? Nope. Can you create a four-story building with it? Absolutely! Renowned architects and engineers are busting the myth that earth/clay fixtures have lesser value and duration compared to cement structures. There are historical landmarks that exist today that people travel to visit and see, and they were built with locally sourced materials - some thousands of years old. There is potential here, and I look forward to tapping into it. We are building a house in Kono right now, and I have promised myself that it will be the last concrete structure I will fund. If we are serious about doing something for the climate, the planet, and local economies, then we MUST be the change.
Thanks for sharing this, Triple-A. I have their contact information and will contact Kolat during my next project. I want to better understand their mix process and see if they allow for independent validation of their test results. If not, then at the very least I need to better understand their quality control measures. It would also be nice to know their designs and intentions towards the provinces (not everyone wants to live in Freetown) because transportation costs could prove prohibitive. I mean, we have clay/earth in the provinces, too. 🤣

Triple AAA, how true it is that this bricks are bullet proof? Do they shot at the bricks in front of you with an AK47 gun being loaded with bullets after you have finished doing the interview with the Managing director?
Hello Abu. Compressed earth blocks-which is what Kolat Bricks does-are bullet proof (Simple Google search will confirm that.) These eco-friendly blocks are used all over the world for several applications. In fact some military installations use them precisely because of that attribute!!
The Managing Director and the interviewer are right in making that claim. (By the way, I don’t work for Kolat neither do I know any of the 2 gentlemen)
