Here Be Dragons is one of the most thematically depressing and somber SCPs, in a pretty subtle way. Sure the deaths of a whole species of fantastical beings who truly loved us as a species and civilization is really sad, but there is a second layer of gut punching feelings in it.
The dragons died because of us forgetting them. For the general public rejecting the idea of the fantastical, magical and supernatural in order to embrace science and logic. People ignored the anomalous, and the anomalous disappeared.
Now looking at it from what the Foundation's role is. They die in the dark of the unexplained so we can live in the light of reason. While the Foundation seems to be ineffectual in the SCP, just a mere observer, behind the scenes the Foundation is one of the groups who actively killed fantasy, for the good of the many.
The Foundation's role in the world is to keep the horrors of the unreasonable and the anomalous away from the public. But as Here Be Dragons shows, it also means taking away the love and the wonder of Fantasy from us.

    • @jakespacepiratee3740
      @jakespacepiratee3740 6 ปีที่แล้ว +275

In a way, the foundation is semi-responsible for this, if less SCP's were contained, belief in mythology would rise, or even if they were willing to disclose information about this magical box to the public, but, of course, they never would do that.
Because the Foundation was so damn efficient in containing, locking things up, weakening, a universe powered by belief wilted and died. It wouldn't be the first time the Foundations goals, through ignorance or lack of interest, caused a genocide.

@@jakespacepiratee3740 Don't compare the Foundation to the GOC. The foundation works on the basis of the greater good, SCP-1762 had to be forgotten as a result of many other great and dangerous anomalies could be contained. What I found truly depressing is that they just totally destroyed any chance of getting any sort of salvation from they’re seemingly most terrible world and thereby dooming themselves to eternal loneliness and despair in a world without imagination and happiness...just like ours seemingly is about to do.
If you’ve read about the plague doctor or scp - 94 (probably not but something like that) this might be the great disease which he was talking about...the total and utter lack of imagination, completely destroying any reason other than to survive for us to live.

I know there's an SCP that's a book that sends its readers consciousness into a vast fantasy world and puts them on an adventure where they are the hero, they can literally live there for decades with only a few hours passing in the real world.
The only problem is that people who did spend entire decades in that wonderful fantasy world tend to commit suicide once they get brought back to reality.

I literally just bawled my eyes out listening to the description of this SCP. It’s one of the things that keeps me sane and the thought of it leaving me breaks my heart.

  • @Grab_N001

Had an idea for a story. A researcher, once part of this SCP, decides to make an attempt to bring it back. He takes the ashes to a creature of unknowable innocence and love, SCP 999. 999, being the seed of an incomprehensible evil creature, but being made of pure goodness, touches the ashes and a new box is formed from the ashes. An ornate box, shiny and golden. It opens the room is flooded with origami dragons. The door is flung open by pursuers of the researcher, only for the dragons to flood the site. Powered the hope and dreams of SCP 999, a being a pure good and innocence, the other world is more powerful than ever, reviving it anew.
There’s obviously more details I’d want included, but honestly I just made this out of my desire for some fluff, and odds are I’ll never actually write the story.
The SCP universe is filled with destruction and hate, surely it wouldn’t be too far fetched for a world to be brought back from destruction thanks to the hopes of a single man a good blobby boy, right?

@@69Kazeshini well...given what we gleam from 3000... and the Mariana Trench files, and similar evidence that all point towards proving an existence of a much greater than perceived influence, a significant pull Foundation has to sway this world, although only seems to use to keep the peace and balance for humanity's greater good, but a greater good as they see it, a status quo...which is ultimately complacency and unpreparedness...
In fact many of their own files prove that either the Serpent's Hand or even the Church of The Broken God, apparently waging a war for our salvation across the multiverse, albeit their conclusion, their solution against potential outcomes being either total annihilation of life in the universe or at least of life on Earth, or the madness like states of existence that might take over here as they did within other universes means(for them a necessity of a sacrifice, in form of) literal replacement of and stripping of the ever corruptible flesh...which is I suppose true enough...And if we ever get to see that mechanistic paradise of a universe we're apparently locked out of...well, who knows, even the other factions(save the Sarkics of course) might agree with this "Church's" teachings...

You can pass it on, but it will never be the same.
Think of any fantasy story you had. Now think of how much detail you just intrinsicly know and it would take retelling your entire life and all the thoughts you ever had to someone for them to come anywhere close to an understanding of that fantasy of yours.
Thats ultimativly while the dragons passed on.
It wasnt cause they lost a battle in a world. Its cause that fantasy passed on. That fantasy died.
And noone, not even the original creator as they have changed by now too (like a child having grown up), can stop it from happening.
Just like you cant stop a book from reaching its last page...

However, there is hope. "One last time." It is the hope, that any fear or doubt of embracing our imagination can fade away, and then the dragons can return.

Every once in a while I come back to this video or the wiki page desperately searching for something new. Something that maybe, just possibly, will tell us the dragons are back. Along with the elves and the giants. Something that says our room has grown to a thick jungle full of leaves and vines. Every time I come back I try to believe in the dragons but it’s hard when you’ve grown up being told that our world is reality and there is no other. When I was a child I desperately wanted to be special. To have some special prophecy written about myself. Slowly through the years my belief in fantasy was smothered. Maybe one day I can truly believe. Maybe one day we can bring back the dragons.

Ouch, this... this just hurts. Something about this just feels all too real, especially for people like me who tend to believe that things accused of being fantasy had realistic counterparts.
Our ancestors told us of dragons, some massive, some feathered, some bearded, some small and some bald. Others had long horns, wings or extra legs, but they were said to all come from the same family. Today we dig up bones of creatures we decided to call dinosaurs, plesiosaurs and pterosaurs. But insist that humanity never witnessed them walking.
Old tales of giants as big as a house can be recounted by the fireside. Some were friendly, others clumsy, others hostile and cannibalistic. But today, once again, all we find are the bones of these large humans that used to live with us.
The ogre has been reduced to the Sasquatch, the trolls to stone. The naturalistic Elves became myth or musician and the skilled Dwarves came to be regarded as diseased. The wizards and witches became our chemists, pharmacists, psychiatrists and illusionists.
Fact became fable, magic morphed into science, mystery was erased, and rationality replaced wonder.
There still exists the unexplained, the unknown, the heavenly and the paranormal. But now we mock it, hide from it and fear it instead of embrace and adapt to it. We accuse the fantastic to be fictional, and call miracles of healing "biological anomalies". Say what you will about the past, preach about how terrible a time it was and how our race has grown only more advanced. But when wonder dies, so does the need for understanding. When knowledge is mandatory, curiosity is murdered. When death is cured, life is taken for granted.
The advancements made by the human race are mostly amazing and beneficial, but our attitude towards the world as a culture has overwhelmingly become more cynical and condescending. We are forced to absorb knowledge we never need, or are forbidden from/rejected for discussing facts and philosophy if they contradict culture depending on where you live.
Life as a human being hasn't gotten worse, nor has it truly gotten better. It is simply a more advanced way of being the same.
... I did not expect to be provoked into a rant by an SCP video today.

    • @ysucae
      @ysucae 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

*interesting fact: a lot of "giant bones" were found to be bear bones. which were dug up and re-buried with honors and gifts, mostly in antiquity where they were though to be heroes and demigods. I really like to imagine walking, talking bears chilling pre-roman empire because I can.
you know, a bear probably gave the inspiration for the story of Achilles and Troy. there is fantasy when you let yourself soak in the stories around you. in the growth of a pet or a plant, the bustling of strangers in a busy street, the night sky when it's clear and crisp, the knowledge that we are made of stars and in our hearts beat the beats of the beginning of the universe.
the wonder just changed form. most just take the amazing for granted, as you said. but I don't think that knowledge kills curiosity, or that rationality and mystery can't coexist.
if "magic" didn't exist there wouldn't be scientists, or artists trying to understand or celebrate it. just businessmen trying to profit off of it.

    • @Derpy-qg9hn
      @Derpy-qg9hn 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Be careful about getting angry with humanity; realize (with a grain of salt - I admit I am spouting hearsay and I barely remember where I heard it from) that a lot of the world's first scientists did it explicitly as an act of respecting God (the Christian one - yea, renaissance was largely a European thing :P), uncovering the extent of "His" worldly design. Plenty of such scientists quickly realized, however, that they began discovering God out of the realm of possibility - there just wasn't room left for fantasy, at least, for genuine belief in it. So, in this sense, 1762's demise was an inevitability; as physics and astronomy prove that godly creation would, if it happened at all, scarcely resemble the biblical Genesis, and as biology dates our closest dragon equivalents to millions, even billions of years ago, it quickly becomes apparent that our world just.. isn't as wonderful.
..huh, isn't that a thought. We're getting bored of our own knowledge, just as you might grow bored of a video game after the first or second playthrough. How fitting.

What I understood: they (fantasy world inhabitants) and us (humans) are mutually dependent of each other - one cannot exist without the other.
For us to exist, they have to believe, we exist.
For them to exist, we have to believe, they exist.
We're both like gods to each other - we, and them, decide, if them, or us, should even exist.
    This here gets terryfying.
Since we've stopped believing in their existence - their very existence, and their world, begins to crumble and collapse.
What follows: since they will be gone - our world will collapse as well, since they can no longer believe, that we exist, because they no longer exist.
Yeah, we've just doomed ourselves. Congrats humanity!

This reminds me of that one spongebob episode where spongebob and patrick had a cardboard box and they went inside it and created a fantasy world using their imagination but when squirdward opened the box all he saw were the two just sitting in there laughing and playing.
Maybe the "Room" referred to in the story is a kid's room, a kid who really liked dragons and had all sorts of dragon figures and picture on his walls or maybe even just pictures of fantasy stuff.
The "Family" could be the kid's family and could either be fantasy story writers or origami makers (which would explain why they were supposed to be creative)
And maybe the kid used to play in the box using his imagination and he made this fantasy world inside of this box, and to him it seemed real and that gave meaning to the box and probably it the way it is

Believe in something enough and it's real? Then real Giants died. Elves. Dragons. They died WAITING for us in that world and one individual has to make the choice that we were a lost cause to them and rally who was left alive too run and flee. Even when they were abandoned they destroyed the room so no harm would come to us. Exiled us from their new Haven scared and abandoned. For their own survival.
This is the power of imagination and this is what we did with it. Created something and left it behind. Broke it's heart and it died alone and scared. Goddamn it. I'm crying.

The constant divide and the refusal to unite as one. I've been called a communist, globalist scum just because I'd like to see all of humanity united as one.

I absolutely love the art/pictures/background of this video. It's also the first vid I watch that actually explains scp-1762. Thanks :)

By far my favorite scp. While I love dragons, as well as origami, yet the backstory really does hit home with the concept of belief and how age can change how we see/ believe.

    - Damn, this is one of the saddest ones I've ever heard. Wish I could go to that Fantasy world, ours is so boring that only my cowardice keeps me from taking the midnight special ride out of this mortal coil. though I do want to see if I can live long enough for our race to reach the Singularity.

I can respect the many, many reasons people are drawn to the SCP wiki and its many articles. I'm a sucker for some of the items based around a good mystery, honestly. But the thing that makes me a fan of SCP is stuff like Where the Dragons Went, the stuff that just guts you and leaves you a blubbering wreck. You know you got something special when a setting known for its sci-fi, fantasy, horror, and action elements, for its consistent quality despite having a rather loose setting with no set canon, can deliver something like SCP-1762.

This one legitimately made me cry. I've loved dragons since I was a toddler, and I love them even now. Makes me sad to believe that we let them down.

I feel like there could have been a few D-Class who they could "convince" to believe in fantasy or at least the dragons maybe that could have a effect on the SCP

I started bawling like a baby, I'm not gonna lie. As an artist as well as a practicer of magiks, this absolutely broke my heart. I feel the world has lost so much wonder as we loose our faith in the whimsical and fantastical. I think we as a species, we've lost something valuable in our push for the logical answer to everything. And I don't mean big scientific things, I mean things like faerie circles and elves, the magiks of the earth. We've lost something, I can't explain exactly what, but we've lost something special, a spark, a sense of connection, of wonder.
    Here were dragons, indeed
