You must not know much about dragons then if you think they’re generally depicted as companions. They’re typically seen as intelligent killing machines that hoard gold and swipe a hoe. The scp stories about them are good but they just seem like big smart god like creatures. Which is a neat idea but that’s not what they are. Not to people who know a fraction about them at least

They have always been cruel. These are men who have not heeded the adage about monsters. They stared into the abyss of and were taken by it. Thus why I say part of the anomalies the Foundation "secures, contains, and protects" us from is themselves.

      @vermillion6159 3 ปีที่แล้ว +48

@@neroham93 do they have to be protected from all anomalies though? The first bunch of SCPs I've ever read were horror related ones, similar to Creepypasta, like the statue (173) or the old man (106). Those were obviously dangerous ones that might cost the lives of many people if let loose, but the end of this story explains itself why Tharnak deserved to roam free. If everything is explained, the world would just be plain and boring, and humans could even expand their own potential through positive anomalies. It's not like humans aren't already killing each other every day.
I don't really believe in supernatural stuff, but I wouldn't be surprised if anything unusual would be kept hidden by real life secret agencies as well if that was the case.

I'd argue it wasn't suicide, since we don't have any indication that the foundation told Tharnok about the anti aircraft guns, or that they would kill him if he left the cave. They tricked him into giving them his trust, then when he couldn't hold out any longer they effectively slaughtered him rather than using their immense resources to allow him to go on a quick flight undetected.
Do the foundation seriously not have a way to hide from radar?

Aren't all flames plasma? At least, I don't think there is a meaningful way to distinguish between "fire" and "plasma" here - if there is, I'd love to learn! 🤓
Unlike other phase transitions, there is apparently no clear boundary at which degree of ionization (percentage of particles that is charged) you stop calling it a gas and start calling it plasma.
A candle flame (1400°C in the blue core, 800°C in the red outer part) is mostly neutral gas with only few ions - which is still enough to make it conductive, though. Some people call that plasma, while I've found some ThoughtCo article that reserves the term for hotter fires like magnesium (3100°C) with higher ionization - but I couldn't find any numbers on how big the difference is, or why it matters.
Apparently, some of the most common examples of plasma are also only partially ionized - lightning, fluorescent lightbulbs, welding ... Fully ionized atoms, where all bound electrons are stripped from the nucleus, not just the outer valence ones, only seem to occur around thermonuclear processes.

Unfortunately the YT spam filter seems to be _really_ allergic to them... (esp. longer ones with fancy formatting characters) Sometimes they just get buried, but AFAIR the one under "Musical SCPs" had a couple hundred likes and some replies - then, when I wanted to edit to correct a minor detail, the whole thread vanished without a trace? [DATA EXPUNGED] lol, happened a couple of times... 🤔
I'm also keeping them elsewhere, maybe I'll e-mail the channel in case they want to put them in as proper chapter markers. (Though I'd totally respect if they prefer having none, or wanting them done differently.)

For real though, why is it that dragons are the only thing that is truly sad in the SCP world?
I guess you could go all meta, since in modern literature, dragons are often used to represent wonder and amazement without knowing anything, and dragons are often killed to symbolically represent the "death" of all of that wonder and amazement once you become an adult. So maybe the writers are trying to symbolize that death of fantasy, being replaced with science and science fiction?

I'd like to think the ending of the article had a slightly different explanation: Even if Lester couldn't bring himself to believe, perhaps he could bring the dragons back if he got these foundation to collectively believe they were out there. Especially if given a Keter classification, often lending an air of incomprehension to anomalies that the new dragons would need to survive.

The dragon memetic is nearly culturally universal. It's a snake/lion/shark that flies. It's all the horrors that haunted prehistoric man with red tooth and claw. But we have slain the dragons and made boots and carpets and soup. And now, there is no beast to stalk the nights, only the night itself. And what is humanity against that? Clever monkeys staring into the yawning maw of existence. The dragons died, and we found real fear.

Yeah, judging from those two "Maybe the real dragon slayer is losing your imagination" is the go-to theme for sapient European fantasy dragon skips. TBF, I only know three, and *SCP-1154* (Conceptual Dragon) doesn't go for the heartstrings like that. If you widen the net a bit, there's *SCP-2454* (How To Train Your Axolotl), which is just adorable, and *SCP-1779* (Dime Consumers), which is kinda cool. So if you like dragons and reading the Wiki yourself, I'd say maybe give those a shot?
There also seem to be quite a few mythological reptiles and dragon-adjacent ones, but I have only skimmed a few.

Dragons are the epitome of our natural and childlike wonder. The amazing explanation as to why mountains shook, volcanoes burst and storms abate with no warning.
Salvatore said it best. There has to be a little magic. Some wonder and awe that makes us aspire towards more in all things.
Apathy has bled us of our fantasies.

If I had a nickel for every SCP that involved a sad story about dragons that died out because of human advancements, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice, right?

Science doesn't remove mystery, for every new discovery there are always more and more and in reality we know very little of what there is to know. Hell if the multiverse theory is true then there is an infinite amount of worlds out there that have dragons on them. I try to remember that every ending is a new beginning and every beginning is the end for the previous story.

There’s something even MORE evil about simply suffocating the personification of Awe, as if it were nothing more than a sack of unwanted kittens thrown in the river. Damn the SCP for pretending diplomacy, when what they really wanted was victory without the clash.

mystery becomes mundane as you learn, not because you discover that it was always mundane, but because you have made it to be so.

So dragons in the scp universe are creatures of that feed fantasy and belief in stories, miracles, and the unexplained. If there isn't any fantasy in the hearts of people they become normal.

A world without wonder hope's and dreams sounds like a cold and empty place like the void of space or a heart without a warm embrace from time to time. Never stop loving the fantastic the mysterious the mythical the unexplained.
