For me, the ideas in th-cam.com/users/postUgkxy_pn55PK60wAV3X_C_RoLS_67mNonoCE Plans were a starting point for building different sheds . Ryan gives ideas that allow an individual to draw nicest conclusions into the design and building of his or her own shed.

You need collar ties across those rafters, at least the 7 12 ones or your walls will bow out under a load. I have been a builder 30 years.

First time I ever saw anyone start at the top with sheathing.
It's funny you said this. As a carpenter I've always started on bottom and work towards the peak standard practice. With it being a tiny house It was easier to sheet this from top cause I could stand on wall. Then add the last sheet with a ladder.
Great video. I have a structural question. Would you not need a horizontal tie beam at some point in the middle of the house to stop the roof from spreading the walls and consequently sinking down? How do you prevent that? Not much weight with just the roof but snow loads can be pretty high

Hey there's was using 2x6 a must for your roof? Or could I get away with 2x4? Was it a decision based on structural integrity or ability to insulate more?

You all are explaining things but in your own “Carpenter” language so for someone who doesn’t know some of the terminology, it’s frustrating. I can’t understand how the rafters are both attached in the same place on opposite sides of the beam.
You many have already figured this out. Basically you hold the rafter in place and use a nail gun to "toe-nail" the beam into place. That means you shoot the nail at an angle from the rafter into the ridge beam. Shoot one or two nails per side. However, that's just a temporary support. You'll want to go back and use simpson strong tie rafter hanger (google it). That is a metal plate with nail holes designed to attach rafters to a beam or wall. Hope this helps a bit!
Could the entire home be a 2/12 pitch roof?
Hey this is really odd question if anyone can answer. I have an RV 30' with water damage roof. I'm doing a complete gut and was going to lay all new rubber but I'm thinking I want to build a loft so I would need to build a taller roof. Is it possible for me to gut the entire roof off my camper and just frame in a new roof with a pitch that hangs over original RV siding? Not sure if frame from RV will work or not or if I would have to do something to make this possible. Any help is greatly appreciated.

what's the height and width of your mini house, im looking at building my own on a fifth wheel platform behind my truck, its only going to be 2.1m wide and 3.2m tall, Im worried it will be a sail if a windy day comes along or on the freeway with it. have you had any dramas with wind?

I always think about the finish. Being in Alaska, you would have to choose something pretty robust. Maybe a marine finish.

How do you sheath the very top of the roof, like the top of the ridge pole so there isn't a diagonal Apex between the two top sheets?

Talking about sheathing, did you guys do any Braced Wall Calculations? I work for an architect and the codes officials have really been inforcing these. I know a tiny house doesnt exactly follow the same code rules (most places don't have tiny house codes) but I would figure wind racking would be the same on a tiny house.
simple notch in T brace, same applied to R7/5 foam applied to the exterior of a 2x6 or 2x4 exterior walls. this being the whole structure itself those homes. compared to those homes, built tonnes myself, I would feel safer with the very little amount of raking that would occur in this home.

It's looking great guys! For someone that doesn't build houses, it's nice to sort of see all the pieces start to come together. Question for you. Would it have been a big deal to make the floor deck (and the whole build) wider than the trailer overhanging the edges maybe twelve inches or so? That would have given you considerably more space inside. Thanks again!
+Jeff Booton Hi Jeff, this is a great question. We've seen this done quite a bit, but personally decided not to do this because all of the walls would then not be over the trailer. I don't like the idea of the entire wall/roof system sitting on a cantilevered 2x4 deck. You could go with bigger floor framing materials (floor joists) but this would add to the height, decreasing the headroom (already tight with a loft). So maybe in a design without a loft, where you could beef up the floor structure, this would work. Or maybe we just are too worried about this structural strength.
Hi Jacob and Ana, I have a question for you guys. I know that video is a little old now, so I am sorry for posting on here. SO I am designing my Tiny Home at the moment and have ran into a little issue. I am trying to avoid going over the width limit on my home so that I do not have to worry about getting a special permit to transport it. The issue I have ran into is what do I do about soffit vents? My Fascia only extends a mere 1/4" from the OSB. This is leaving me no room to at vents. Any suggestions on how to vent my roof?

Yes, the walls and roof were spray foamed.

Was curious also on if you elected to go with a seamless no fastener option on your metal. I have the same project happening currently with a 2/12 and a 7/12. Figure the low slope warrants a seamless metal? Thanks for your time!
why did you use a drill when framing roof boards and framing nailer when putting plywood on it
+Noah Knopf Hi Noah, great to hear from you this week. Thank you for watching! Screws tend to be stronger, especially in a joint that is moving, so we are using screws on some of the framing. However screws take longer and are more expensive than nails, so there is a tradeoff. When it comes to the sheathing, It's just much quicker to nail and even on a tiny house on wheels, screws would be overkill. Worth noting we are using ring shank nails and glue when we are nailing. Nice choice with wood. the thermal break wood be horrible. works alright for a southern climate, but the northern climate is def a bad choice for steel. unless u want to shrink the inside dementions even more and wrap at least a 7/5 foam over it combating rhe thermal break on the steel studs.
+Greg d Greg d we are with you on this one. The benefit of the smaller metal studs would be outweighed by the added insulation in our climate. But would be interested to see how the metal studs work out in a warmer climate. Maybe this is my chance to convince the hubs we need to build a tiny house in Hawaii LOL

Hard to tell but did you use a kreg HD setup/screws for the rafters connecting to the top plate? I would be concerned with all that load being placed on pocket hole screws or any screws for that matter, although there are some special screws for screwing rafters to top plates. Screws tend to break compared to nails, I would of at least used some hurricane clips to add more tie in strength to the side walls so the roof don't pancake with the snow loads that Alaska gets. I've never seen screws used for rafters in 20 years of construction. Nice build looks like a lot of fun.

Can you show the detail in how to splice the ridge pole? I've not seen this done before (didn't pay attention when my house was built).
+Tracy Smith We didn't get a ton of footage of this, but basically you splice between rafters, and then cover the joint with a 2x board, lower on top to account for the dropping roof pitch.
