I've been working in manufacturing since 1997. The first of my manufacturing jobs was fabricating pickling tanks for the steel industry out of polypropylene. Now I work making the equipment used to separate red cells from plasma.
So how can we be an advocate for manufacturing with the current anti-capitalist anti-manufacturing administration?
Worked in a weaving mill for 17yrs before NAFTA took me out. I actually enjoyed it.
I saw a Video on TH-cam a few years ago where a Home Construction boss building serious numbers of houses a year in the mid-West decided to test just how much 'Made in America' Construction materials and fittings he could buy in a reasonable supply distance from his area of activity and the cost of such.
Most of what he currently used was available within a short radius of his location and prices while slightly higher than the imported stuff were still affordable when other factors were figured into the equation.

My Grandpa worked at a shirt factory in his little town in Indiana until he had to retire in the 1950s because of cancer. He always worked hard. I wish I had one of those shirts.

While America still makes things, The percent of the economy attributed to manufacturing has gone way down. Indiana has the highest percent of its economy in manufacturing compared to other states. I believe its around 25 to 30% of its economy. That’s too bad because creating something like a water pump that costs $500 from a five dollar piece of metal is where wealth is created. When China is manufacturing something for us, guess who gets to keep the wealth? Oh sure Amazon can make billions from their 2% of the transactional profit but America loses everything else.

I work in a fabrication shop, we make asphalt equipment and mining equipment. All huge stuff. Blue collar is the only way.

Usually when the rare item DOES say "Made in the USA" it's actually made by IMPORTED labor, not by Americans.
I just bought bird feeders that said "MADE IN THE USA" about a month ago. Gave me a thrill to see that.
Lessons to be learned: never mix colors.
We make everything we need. We do it everyday. Some of us are still outsourcing for important parts and small technical components, that's about it.

This uses the same flawed logic as the military apologists I'm government that concluded that the percentage of people killed in wars had gone down, and used that to sell the idea that they were reducing warfare, when in fact the numbers of humans killed had increased.
In reality, The US has gone from having an economy that's was based to 80% on goods, and only 20% services. Today it's only 30% production and 70% services, and still shifting towards less and less production.

We need to get back to Chip Manufacturing. We Have some we need lots more. The future awaits us.
The Virtuous Cycle of American Industry and natural inflation was interrupted by the exportation of jobs and the importation of foreign goods. There has always been import and export but often it was only useful for products that could not be made domestically or for specialized spices etc that cannot be produced nationally. Forcing this to occur on an ever increasing schedule will eventually cause the cycle to break entirely and the economy of the working class to collapse. The artificial worker shortage brought on by wasteful gov’t entitlement programs is creating a false cycle which will exacerbate the problem sevenfold and expand the problem of correction. Since no one in interested in fixing this problem only local innovation can save local economies.

Although I admire your sentiment, you are way off the mark. Being a small scale manufacturer of equipment for small farms, we are only able to source 22% of our parts and materials from domestic sources that actually manufacture and not relabel import parts as their own. That's just reality.
My solution would be to keep upping the tariffs on all non-discretionary goods manufactured in China. I’d use any time they mentioned Taiwan being part of China as the trigger point for every 5% increase in tariffs. Will what you manufacture go up in price? Absolutely! But it will provide good value and good jobs to American workers who want to work. You wanna let China make discretionary parts and goods? I’m fine with that. But not essential goods.
@@adviceman66 Of course what you propose is commonly done in varying measure but then you have the CCP that will counter those measures by subsidizing their manufacturers, therefore negating tarrifs. It's a crazy circle. My intent when I began sourcing parts and setting up the machining was that domestic suppliers providing domestic parts, often times do not want to be bothered with small quantities. By small, I mean 10-50k worth of a single part such as small electric motors. For instance, any vehicle made in North America have "zero" windshield wiper or fan blower motors that are not from China, zero! I have had many contacts with American companies that provide them to industry. All of their manufacturing is based in China. They are simply not interested in working with small outfits. What I can do is call a myriad of suppliers in China and speak to a rep, send my designs and get my motors with no issues. Let alone the price! US companies have been horrendous to deal with on every level. I am embarrassed for the state of our industries. Even "if" I could source domestically, I could not reach a reasonable price point, not even close. All of the above commentary is about one of nearly 200 parts we require. One good thing the US has is plastic, we have lots of plastic. Cheers!
