Always love Mike Rowe documentary work
Was fortunate to be able to tour Hoover Dam some decades ago. The sound of the water rushing through the dam into the turbines is awesome.
Same here, I was pretty young but I still remember everything, looking down the side was insane. I particularly remember being fascinated by the size of the generators, I was a tinkerer as a child and knew all about electric motors and generators by that time and couldn't comprehend the sheer amount of power each of them were making and how a motor/generator could be made _that_ big. That's actually pretty funny thinking about that now considering that throughout my career as a machinist I've worked on industrial scale parts for steel foundries, dams, Boeing manufacturing equipment (lots of little stuff and one project for a building-sized machine that laid carbon fiber tape for the wings of 787s) and SpaceX machinery, to name a few, and a lot of those old childhood questions I had have been answered for a long time lol...
Back when America could actually build … now we can’t even fix a pot hole

Most of what I know of hydroelectric, coal, nuclear, power comes from my father in law, foreman, millwright for a major contractor. He much preferd the clean hydroelectric generators. A coal fired turbine is a very dirty job. Big bucks though.

After visiting Las Vegas several years ago and seeing an entire strip of buildings dedicated to gratifying the basest and most vile of human vices, I had my faith in humanity completely restored by visiting the Hoover Dam. Where the Las Vegas strip highlights some of the worst in human behavior, the Hoover Dam reflects the best in human excellence, determination, and bravery. It is a magnificent structure, built during a desperate time by people with backbones of steel. And, as a kind of exclamation point, the finish work on the outside of the dam is done in an Art Deco style, as if to say, “Not only are the builders of this dam the best in the world at what they do, they look good doing it.”

Great video. I used to give tours at Bonneville Lock & Dam on the Columbia River. A few mistakes though. Water is not "pumped." It flows down through penstocks via gravity and turns the turbines. Also.. the generator power wouldn't be expressed in Megawatts per hour. That would be like saying my car engine produces 150 Horsepower per hour. Power is expressed in Megawatts. Energy in Megawatt-Hours. A copywriter with an engineering background could help.
As a machinist, I got a good chuckle out of the no-metric sticker on Jason's ID.
There are two kinds of countries…. Those who built Hoover dam and put a man on the moon and those who use metric.
On serious note, I use metric every day at my job and it is a superior system. But I do enjoy the joke above.

While Hoover dam is impressive what is also extremely impressive is the enormous hydro electric capacity that Canada has built in Quebec and British Columbia with 1/16th the population of America and now supplies the northeast and southwest with power when needed🇨🇦🇺🇸

I was in the Army & had an injury during duty. When I recovered I went to trade school through the Voc rehab program. This program paid for my education as well as a small amount to care for my family while in school. I feel fortunate my brain injury occurred while in the service otherwise I may be destitute from the medical bills alone.
Saw a history channel documentary on the Hoover dam. It's someone s job to remove quaga mussels from the intake pipes so they don't clog and overheat the generator!

If lake mead keeps dropping like it’s been doing that dam ain’t gonna be making electricity anymore. People need to stop moving into the desert. Droughts and the fact that it was built in the 30s and can no longer keep up with modern water demands is gonna screw a bunch of people over. I really hope that doesn’t happen. This operation is pretty cool.

At 8:34 "Water is pumped from upstream and into a generator's turbine". There is no pump, it is gravity pushing the water. When the water level is too low, less ⚡ is generated.
CORRECT! I caught that also. (See also: penstock) The only pumped water goes to Los Angeles which does generate power downslope to recover some of the power used to pump it over the mountains.

Well, to begin with the Hoover dam doesn't electrify America. At 2080 mwg it barely has the capacity to supply average demand for Arizona.
I am shocked that in that obviously very safe and highly regulated environment I saw almost nobody wearing safety glasses including a few times when they really could have needed them, their boss could not have been pleased when he watched this.
I will NEVER understand why many engineers and machinists are NOT using the metric system.
Because it is not up to Engineers and Machinists to decide what system is used. This often comes from customer or industry standards. In th case of Hoover dam it is a legacy standard from the era this facility was constructed.
