US had design blue prints for decades, but when it comes to metallurgy it's a fail.

The Yak-141 was able to go supersonic and it had a rear engine that could swivel down. I think Lockheed Martin or something bought some Yak-141s to test the concept out and it _eventually, kind_ led to the F-35.
