Thank you so much Sharon!! The best beginner tip I can give you is cut a little big and then trim back. It will help so much as you learn how to sew accurate seam allowances. You might want to use wool batting for your quilts as it would be warmer. I live significantly further south than you, so cotton is generally what we use here. I hope you see many fun projects that inspire you here on the channel.

I love making envelope pillowcases and really enjoyed this video. To make seams extra durable, I put front and backs together with French seams: first sew front + backs together using scant 1/4 inch seam; second, turn right side out and sew around all 4 sides using a generous 1/4 inch seam, thus enclosing the raw edges inside this second seam. The enclosed seam will make a small flange all around, which frames the pillow. If you don't like having that flange, you can keep the enclosed seam on the inside if, in the first step, you sew front & backs together with WRONG SIDES FACING, then turn inside out and sew the enclosing seam, then turn right side out and you have the finished pillowcase with smooth (unflanged) edges all around. French seams do use extra fabric, but it's easy to adjust the sizes of front & backs when cutting.
So I'm just going to say this! Patty I had to do a double-take on this video...First of all...the piecing is pristinely done! Second of all, I'm going to use that serpentine stitch on my cousin's Christmas quilt....now that I know how it's done! I saw it on a quilt made for us by one of my husband's former coworkers down South, but didn't know how it was done. It looks really easy! And thirdly, my husband has been wanting me to make patchwork quilts for our bed like his grandmother used to make. Since I don't have a big stash, I went on Amazon and ordered 306 pieces of layer cakes, fat quarters, etc. for $110. Thanks to your video, I now know exactly how to make his patchwork quilt for Christmas! Pardon me, but....HOT DAMN...KEEP 'EM COMING!!!

And the new Patchwork machine has improved my work tremendously. It's a wonderful sewing machine. I definitely prefer the 4 patch method for making the patchwork styled pieces. I think it's much easier to handle than sewing long skinny rows of pieced squares. I see people doing them that way but I don't know how you would ever get your intersections to line up consistently. I can't wait to see what you purchased in your haul! That serpentine stitch is so pretty and super easy to use. And It was fun to do whatever after all the careful precision in the quilt top. I recently made a quilt for a gift. This is going to a wonderful cousin that we are going to visit in WA. A friend suggested I make a pillow to go with it. Do I have enough fabric? I just might, especially if I do a patchwork design like the one you so lovingly demonstrated! I have 10 days before I hit the road so I should be able to make it. I had the large quilt done on a long arm, but if I can quilt this little project on my machine that would be fabulous! Thank you for such clear directions. You did a beautiful job!

Fusible quilt batting is EVERYTHING on small projects. If you shop in Joann, it's in with the interfacing. I hope you'll try making them. It's such a pretty finished project.

Those really are pretty! I don't have that size ruler or a 1/4" foot but I'm trying to practice all this stuff in more of a mini form. I don't think I've heard of 'fusible' batting. Thanks for so many tips & tricks & full instructions!
Thanks Kathy! I love fusible batting! I use it for a lot of things including bags and all my small projects. The 6x24 ruler is truly an essential. I use it every time I go to sew now. I want one from Creative Grids because this cheaper joann version has the markings starting to wear off. I love making mini quilt projects and I am planning to work with them as a series going forward. They are super fun and something that can be finished. Full sized quilts are difficult in my space and with my time. So small projects and demonstrating blocks is the way I want to go forward.

Not dumb at all! If you don't use the batting you don't get the thick quilted look. Battings are made in different thicknesses, or loft, and of different materials. The loftier your batting the more pronounced your quilting stitches will look. You could use interfacing or interfacing and couple layers of a muslin and then quilt or no quilting stitches at all with the interfacing. You should do some sort of stabilizer to give your pillow body. To be honest, I guess you could consider the batting to be a thick, soft, sew in stabilizer. I hope that helps!
@@makingahomemaker Oh I'm glad! It's kind of fun and quilting doesn't have to be huge, complicated bed quilts. I make a lot of small projects like placemats and table runners and bags and stuff like that in addition to bedding. It's addicting if you haven't tried it.

Yeh I really like the tutorial except for when I have to turn the volume off when the music starts. It’s a sewing video, doesn’t need music, I would much prefer to listen to the sewing machine & to you talk 😂
Thank you but I think the music makes the video more engaging and different from other channels. I try hard to pick something fun to go with the video. I appreciate your feedback, but I pay good money for a music service. I watch the video with and without music and the music improves the over all quality greatly.

Hi, I have never quilted before so this is probably a dumb question. But what will happen if you don't use the batting?
Not dumb at all! If you don't use the batting you don't get the thick quilted look. Battings are made in different thicknesses, or loft, and of different materials. The loftier your batting the more pronounced your quilting stitches will look. You could use interfacing or interfacing and couple layers of a muslin and then quilt or no quilting stitches at all with the interfacing. You should do some sort of stabilizer to give your pillow body. To be honest, I guess you could consider the batting to be a thick, soft, sew in stabilizer. I hope that helps!

@@makingahomemaker Oh I'm glad! It's kind of fun and quilting doesn't have to be huge, complicated bed quilts. I make a lot of small projects like placemats and table runners and bags and stuff like that in addition to bedding. It's addicting if you haven't tried it.

I'm generally in the middle, suggested range tending towards the looser tension.

Yeh I really like the tutorial except for when I have to turn the volume off when the music starts. It’s a sewing video, doesn’t need music, I would much prefer to listen to the sewing machine & to you talk 😂
Thank you but I think the music makes the video more engaging and different from other channels. I try hard to pick something fun to go with the video. I appreciate your feedback, but I pay good money for a music service. I watch the video with and without music and the music improves the over all quality greatly.
