Hi Alanda, I wanted to share with you; Before my husband's aunt passed away she gave me unfinished quilt pieces. I wasn't sure what to do with them, and your video helped😀. I'm giving pillows to her children made out of the quilt pieces 😊. Hope they like them😀. Thanks again for your help 💓
Thanks for this video plus others including the Easter bag. I have just spent a gruelling two days trying to master a BoHo bag to no avail. The rough pattern is the same as the Easter bag you have shown but the instructions far simpler yet the result pretty much the same. I am a fairly new sewer and I need simple at this time and I think your tutorials are a lot better and easy to follow than others I have been looking at. You have reeled me in and I'm hooked, keep em coming please!

Thank you Cheryl. Just to let you know that in hindsight I would have liked to have the overlap a little bigger on the back. So I now cut the backing piece bigger. I have changed the instructions on the website to reflect this -www.alandacraft.com/charm-square-cushion-cover/. I look forward to seeing your finished cushion covers on our readers projects page in the future. www.alandacraft.com/submit-your-project/
Thank you Brittany. I have updated the instructions on the website to make the back pieces a little larger as I found with some of the really puffy cushion inserts that the back pieces didn't overlap enough for me to be entirely happy with the result. www.alandacraft.com/charm-square-cushion-cover/
Beautiful video with fantastic editing (i appreciate!). Can you tell us the machine settings for the sewing part? For novices like me, this is the most daunting part about sewing anything - all those mysterious settings and which of the dozens of possible combinations to use. Thank you
I use the default machine settings for my sewing and quilting projects. Unless I am working with a fine, silky or thick fabric I don't change my machine setting. I find the default machine settings work well for most sewing.
Your machine should have the default setting marked in some way to show it's the default. Check your machine's manual. The default for my machine may not be the same as for yours.
Thank you for this video it is very helpful. How do you work out how big and how many squares you need to make a cushion cover? I want to make a 19" cover but do not know how to determine the block sizes. Nowhere on YT can I find a tutorial explaining this. Will you be able to help me PLEAS!!!!!!
I agree Joyce. I think patchwork cushion covers look lovely. Just to let you know I have updated the instructions for this one. I made the back overlap bigger. You can find the change on the website www.alandacraft.com/charm-square-cushion-cover/. Thank you! I am planning to do exactly this with my deceased brother's old shirts for all the family. I'm fairly new to this and I dont want to mess them up.l Can I ask is there a benefit to the batting? Some of the shirts are well worn and I was trying to get a sturdy back on the patches.
What a lovely idea Maria. T-shirt material does need a stabiliser added to it to stop it stretching and making it easier to sew. There are a number of varieties available on Amazon. The batting just adds a bit of softness to the cushion cover.
hi thank you for this easy to follow tutorial, beautiful cusion..... if i didnt want to have the 1" strips around the sides what measurements would my fabric need to be...... (newish sewer)
I would like to say thank you for posting this video of how to make a simple patchwork envelope cushion. As a complete novice, I feel confident enough to try this as your instructions are so clear.
@Alanda Craft I have only just come across your video, seen one other, & I'm fascinated by the clear green plastic w/wood bar that you press down to your fabric. What is the name of this tool & where can I find one?
Unfortunately Zena the company that made these rulers is no longer producing them. You may be able to pick one up online. This is the Quilters Slidelock Ruler, and I just love it. Here is a review that we did for it www.alandacraft.com/2014/08/16/quilters-slidelock-demonstration/. Some sewing stores may still have some in stock but it's no longer available on Amazon.
Thanks for a great tutorial. I would love to do this as pillow sham for a regular sized bed pillow. I am not sure how to figure out the patchwork and sides. Anybody have a formula or suggestions. Bless you...
+Laura Lankford Do you want an envelope closure like we have done on the cushion cover in the video or do you want the opening at one end just like a regular pillow slip/sham
+Alanda Craft I would like an envelope enclosure like you made. I just want it bigger to fit a standard size pillow. I really appreciate how well you explain things in your video. Thanks for responding.

Thank you Jamie :) I have made an adjustment to the back pieces and the updated instruction can be seen here www.alandacraft.com/2016/02/13/charm-square-cushion-cover/. I decided I wanted a slightly larger overlap on the back.

How do you choose what colors, patterns etc to use? Im trying to make one for my mom (she loves daisies so i found her a set with daisies in it) but im worried itll be ugly. Right now i have lilac plaid, blue and white daisies, pink daisies and purple and pink solid color
I just lay the fabric out and go with what appeals to me at the time. Your fabrics sound as though they will go together nicely. And do you know what, there are times when I have put some really ugly pieces together and they look fine once they are sewn up. I have come to the conclusion that there is something about sewing bits of fabric together that changes their look. And believe me your mother will love it no matter what 😊. And if not it's something you can both laugh about.
I have a question. I understand the back envelope piece is the traditional 3rd piece of the quilt sandwich here....but the way it is sewn last, what keeps the batting from crumbling down after repeated washes if it isn't sewn between two layers? So you see the batting when you open the envelope to insert the cushion? Seems like it is missing a layer.
If you don't wish to see the backing you could cut a piece of fabric and attach it to the front piece and quilt or ditch stitch it in place. This would hold the batting in place and also cover it.
@@alandacraft Thank you! I did that. I am almost done making this project. It will fit a king size bed pillow to be used outside in my hammock. It is going to get a lot of abuse, enjoyment and washing! Honestly, it is somehow coming together nicely...even with my wonky math and sewing ability lol. Could not have done this without your very detailed tutorial. Thank you!
