    I know you were glad that Wouxun decided to put the microphone jack on the remote head rather than the radio itself as you Icom ID-5100, but companies like Icom and Kenwood do that for a reason. For a lot of people, finding a good place to mount the remote head is a problem, and they end up mounting it in less than desirable places, like on the dash, air conditioning vents and etc. Having a coiled microphone cord pulling at the remote head can put a lot of stress on a mount that may not be nearly as secure or sturdy as we would like. But the RJ extension cables can be added to add extra length to the microphone cable coming from the radio itself giving a much safer alternative. Icom and Kenwood were thinking ahead on their reasoning for placing the mic jack where they did. They could have just as easily put it on the remote head, but instead did it for a valid reason. To me, the best option would have been if all companies supplied two jacks, one on the head and one on the radio body itself, giving the user his or her choice of which one works best for them.

      Yeah it would be nice if the end user had a choice of mic on the remote head or on the brain of the radio.

    Late post, but one feature that is glossed over is that it has built in repeater mode with the extension cable to another 980P. So, could do full repeater setup for about $700.

    Thanks for the informative video. Here in the uk we have a 4mtr, 6mtr, 2mtr, 70cms and I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to change to the 4mtr & 6mtr bands, till I watched your video. I totally agree with you about the plug should go into the head not the radio body. I bought a qyt mobile with a remote head, its a great little rig, but the mic plugs into the body of the radio. Its so annoying. I bought a secondhand wouxun quad band rig but sadly it was faulty. So a quick call to Martin lynch and I got a brand new quad band rig. The only problem with the radio is, how available is a quadplexer? But thanks to you, the radio seems really good and may give the big three a run for their money. Many thanks again.
    4mtr =70Mhz
    6mtr =50Mhz
    2mtr =144-146Mhz
    70cms =433 -440Mhz
    Looking forward to using the 4 & 6mtr bands with the correct antennas.

    Hello all.
    I also own a 980p for 2 months and am not quite happy with it. Worst thing about this radio is TX modulation being weak.
    HF power is 35 Watts max on 2m and 26 Watts om 70cm while they promise 50/35 Watts.
    Also the compand function makes RX audio terrible so it is unusable.
    And last but not least the microphone plug was so lose in it’s socket that the contacts made noise over TX audio during transmit.
    I hope you guys have more luck with the radio 😁

    Have the 950P quad band. Really liked the radio. Unfortunately the 10M and 6M are basically useless since the radio is FM only. I guess there are some FM repeaters on 10 but with 10 as crappy as it is these days the 10 and 6 bands were barely ever used. I really enjoyed the 950P until one day without warning it just locked up. Seems like a microprocessor issue. Powers up and down with the button but never finishes booting up and cant be used. Liked the radio enough I considered buying another but it was priced $100 more than the TYT 9800 so I gave the TYT 9800 a try it lasted about 6 months and now has a weird problem that seems ground related I still have to troubleshoot more, but in a nutshell it's acting like the radio is finding radio power ground via the coax braid and not the ground wire. that goes to a ground block only a foot away from the radio. Not having a lot of luck with the Chinese radios except my Wouxun HT the KG-UV9D which is an amazing little HT. Was considering giving the TYT MD-9600 dual band DMR mobile radio a try but unfortunately it's not a detachable face radio which I find as an absolute MUST on a radio these days... so that one is a non-starter! my next radio from buytwowayradios will be my 4th radio from them I think...

    Hi there, Irmm I just bought one of these, European version, this one works on 70mhz instead of 28mhz, but same sorta radio, but the thing is here, the instruction book is different to the radio, there all the same, so how the hell can you set thing up when the book is all wrong, my suppliers are trying to get the right book, good luck with that one, it seems to me that there all packed the same in China book doesn't match radio picture, I have never seen a radio that looks like the one in the book, mine looks like the video on here, so seems to me like its all trial and error setting it up, that's really bad form, unless the book covers that design as well...apart from that it all looks good lol.....from Fred g4vvq in Essex England.

      @@HamRadio2 - You stated, in the video, that one could use a 6 meter HT and crossband over to the 440 mhz band. I haven't checked the rules in awhile and I may be a little rusty on this but, I believe that cross band repeating can only be accomplished, legally, on the 220 mhz band or higher. Meaning, the input to the crossbanding radio has to be 220 mhz, 440 mhz, 1.2 Ghz, etc., and output to the 2 meter, 6 meter or 10 meter band but not the other way around? Doesn't the radio, being used for crossbanding, fall under the same rules as a permanent repeater and must be able to be remotely controlled via the 220 band or higher? If I'm wrong, someone please correct me.

    I bought a KG UV 950p to replace tyt after getting a TYT-9800 cause it had a muffled audio. After checking it over it was mic element mini and very cheap!
    The audio quality will change adding another but harder to fit. Also that tyt plastic-like mic cord that wouldn't stretch more than 2.5ft. I had a wouxun KG UV 950P since 2014-2015 been good radio solid receiver no innermod. Crossbanded 80% it's life at 20 watts 24/7 6m to 70cm.
    The newer KG UV-980 body is same construction upgrades to face was made. Mic cords are long and made with rubber jacket , all radio functions on mic as well as faceplate redesigns like
    new improved. VfO knob.
    On 950 both speakers will lack audio in Mobil noise conditions but 3 ext speaker outputs allow for ext speaker connections. And mic cord is long stretches and is not plastic like.
