UPDATE:: Yesterday, September 28, with this radio in my car and a Browning broadband CB antenna cut down to 10 meters, i worked Italy through the 10m repeater in Ney York, also a FM DX contact in Spain. 50 watts is all it took. I love it. 73
I recently bought a laboratory power supply and accidentally fed it to a wouxun kg uv 980p 30 volt. The diode on the input stage blew up. I tried to replace it and a miracle happened. The radio started working again. There was no other damage. I was very lucky
Well, i just found that you CAN operate 11 meters CB on this radio, transmit AND receive.. Menu option 50, am/sw, turn to "ON", BUT you have to program the channel in the software as AM so it will stay on AM.. i'll make a video soon showing it.
+jmtnvalley Same here. I do a lot of 10-meter AM but I've found that although lot of amateur transceivers do in fact operate in AM mode, many of them sound terrible on AM. The Kenwood TS-2000 and TS-480 are excellent AM performers and work WONDERFUL on 10-meter AM with the absolute best AM performer being the TS-2000. However, the TS-480 sounds DAMN GOOD on AM. Either radio would be wonderful choices if you're an AM guy like me :)
My ICOM 7600 sounds AWESOME on AM.I use a HEIL PR-20 microphone & I am told all of the time that it sounds like Tube Audio.I did adjust the audio setting in the menu & it worked out great.
The FM broadcast being as low as 65mhz is for the OIRT FM used in the old USSR and Warsaw Pact,. Japanese FM is 76 and up. There may still be some analog TV stations with audio on those freqs. Countries with 4 meter band also occupy that part of the spectrum. Then there is military VHF in that part of the spectrum too.
This is way better than the Yaesu FT-8900R and is way LESS expensive too. Used to have two Yaesu models (one in the mobile and one for a base). Although they're fantastic rigs, I really wish THIS version was available back then. When the Yaesu model came out they cost around $460 and didn't have quite as broad of receive as this model does. New ham radio operators today have no idea how good you have it nowadays compared to what we had way back when. The transceivers are WAY less expensive from what they used to be. I can remember paying $400 for a simple 2-meter mobile radio (Yaesu FT-2500 with optional PL decode module). Today an equivalent model is but a THIRD of that amount! Transceivers are way more affordable today than they once were :)
You can save AM using your handheld. In this order: Enter frequency desired, then Menu 50 (am-sw) turn On, then Menu again to save. Then on the handheld button 4 (saving channel) enter channel number, then Menu again to save. Now you can name or re-name the channel if you'd like, Menu 22 (ch-name). Now you can leave an AM channel/frequency and come back to it and it will stay on AM.
Yes you can use both of these to talk many miles, but your answer to your question depends on the terain in between, the conditions on the band, and the antennas at both ends.
Bonjour lorsque je branche un haut-parleur externe, j'entends le son sur la bande A & B en UHF mais pas sur la bande B en VHF sauriez-vous me dire pourquoi ?.
can you tell me if the 65-108mhz fm rx overloads when connected to an external ant?my Baofeng UV-5r overloads on the FM BC band and since they use the same chip i'm curious
Good job with the unpacking. The only correction that I have is how you pronounce the name of the company. O Shun is correct (it sounds almost like the word ‘ocean’ in English). Small thing though; nice video!
The 857D is already a POS why would anyone want a copy of a POS? Worst transceiver I have ever owned or used hands down.I would not take a warehouse full of them for FREE if I were required too just keep & use just one of them.
Hi , Have you used the radio to receive on the aircraft band ? If so what did you think of it ? . I'm looking at getting one soon and it's a choice between this and the TYT TH-9800. Thanks and 73. Peter. G7MMW
will this also work for the TYT RECENT and HYS radios? or just this 950 I do not for a ton of 11m but i do still have a few non trashy friends on 11m an would like a quad band for this i do not want my vehicle to look like a mobile communication station with 50 radios Thanks KD8ZCZ
I think I could really use this rig in my set up, whats the rx coverage on the UK version?just to confirm, the 65-108 wfm rx uses the same dsp chip as the Baofeng handies? if so then you have a red hot FM dx machine combined with a ham rig and gen coverage scanner!
It will transmit on commercial aka business band vhf and uhf, or vhf-uhf public service and public safety bands but not FM or AM Broadcast band frequencies. But I wouldn't advise transmitting on those frequencies unless you are legally authorized by either licensing, or being a member of a public service or public safety agency that is lawfully permitted to access those frequencies.
HEY ERIC , N3NDX HERE. DO YOU STILL HAVE THAT RADIO?? I JUST GOT MINE AND THE RG-UV920R-A. I GOT THEM THREE YEARS AGO, WHERE I WAS IN A BUYING SPREE.. THE 920R-A IS DAUL BAND ONLY.. I PUT THAT ONE BACK IN FULL SERVICE.. IF YOU DO AND WANT TO OFF LOAD IT LET ME KNOW.... MY LAND LINE IS OUT OS SERVICE , BUT YOU COULD DROP ME A SNEAL LETTER, AND I WILL GET BACK TO YOU.... 73...........04-11-2020-12:59HRS-E.S.T.......
With 10 meters or 6 meters, if you have a band opening you can talk across the world if the conditions were right. It is FM, but i have talked many miles across the United States on FM 10 meter AND FM 6 meters. There are repeaters on 10m and 6m that connect you all over the US in good conditions in the summer. the VHF/UHF portion of this radio is similar to a 50 watt transceiver. But overall, its fun to have 10 meter contacts in a good opening.
did u do a part 2 on this radio ? and does this radio have a voice scrambler ? if u could do a video about it and how it works that would be great ! thanks
is there a efficient way to program these besides buying the RT software kit? I see that chirp is not supporting this yet. Can I import repeaters in the commander program?
I'm not a ham but interested in ham radio. Is there any radio that is all encompassing meaning it does everything you can do with ham assuming you have the licence to do so?
I cannot seem to get mine to tx in AM on 11 meters. I programmed all of the CB Channels into memory channels in the KG-UV950P Commander version R2.1.01-2.5k(130??? hidden by ok button) set them all to AM and change option 50 (AM-SW) to "ON". Receive seems to be in AM with no trouble but transmit is still transmitting in FM as confirmed by my Yaesu all mode low band transceiver. My radio was purchased last week from buytwowayradios and was manufactured 2/2015. Where your radio in the video says Sain Sonic mine says USA ONLY on the bottom and is s/n:QB002A001162153 I would love to see the video of how you are making this happen. :) I have a bad feeling only non "USA ONLY" versions may tx on 11M. BTW I like the radio so far. It was a bit clumsy to figure out the programming and what the buttons do for the first hour or so, but after a couple days with the radio so far I am getting the hang of it. Cant seem to figure out how to receive the FM Radio band or air bands direct input of the frequencies in frequency mode gets me nowhere. Thought I had the unlock software but have to look again for it. My radio out of the box was capable of transmitting on 26.000 as also confirmed by my Yaesu low band rig.
It does NOT have an AM board in it for transmit so all of the morons who are saying their transmits on AM are full of crap. They will transmit ONLY on FM on ANY BAND!
These Wouxun and Baofeng Chinese radios are really giving the big three, Kenwood, Icom and Yeasu a run for their money! Finally I don't have to pay $400 for a 10 year old Kenwood TM-742A, I can pay $150 for this and have far more functionality and more bands for example. Excellent.
+Ivan Sugartail Yah, i like my Wouxun quad band to this day. Same features, and nobody has EVER commented negatively on my quality of audio or signal.. Love the people who claim "Those china radios will have poor audio and splatter off the band" well guess what, this radio gets me better reports than the Yaesu F-2900 did, that thing was muffled, and the speaker was complete trash above 4% volume... My video will show that.. 73
People care about it in other countries because at distances long after the FM signal cuts out and is completely unreadable, the AM signal continues to be readable many miles further although at weaker levels.
so this radio is capable of RX on 11 Meter AM but your saying it can also TX 11 Meter AM as well? Are you sure it is not just saying its on AM But really TX on FM ?
Well I'm not exactly sure, because I tried it and it sounds kind of off frequency, which may mean it will still transmit on FM, or the section for the mixer is not properly tuned for AM???
For all of us technician class licensees, AM, in addition to FM transmit capability on 6 meters, is a pretty big deal and certainly worth the extra $100 bucks over the TYT TH-9800, even though the TYT is said by many to be a better radio. Yet the idiots at Wouxun seem to be so clueless that they don't advertise or even mention in the small-print that this radio has AM transmit capability!!! BTW, a message to Ivan Bunny: Wouxun IS NOT a Chinese company. It is a Japanese company that manufactures in China (Just like all the other Japanese companies--Kenwood, Yaesu, Icom, Alinco, for example--do!). Baofeng, and TYT ARE Chinese companies.
True, but i will say the AM quality is not that good. I tried AM 10 meters, and AM 11 meters.. While it does work, with a fellow ham miles away for testing, it sounds horrible, and distorted. I guess that is a feature that allows AM transmit, however they probably didnt put the filtering or bandwidth adjustments in it to maximize efficiency and stability. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for the information, an old rig now but I've been offered a second-hand unit at a good price...so your video was very useful. :-)

European and UK CB is mostly FM, so this radio is even more useful here. The multi-function mic is a great feature.
Outstanding, thank you for the extremely insightful and informative review.

I can't wait till they come out with their clone of the 857d and some other HF all mode radios!
johnnieace45 They already have some ideas in the works. Not sure how it will compare, but would be very interesting when they do release it.
HamRadioConcepts man l no We can't wait till they come out with an 857d replacement plz keep us updated on this progress thanks 🤗
The 857D is already a POS why would anyone want a copy of a POS? Worst transceiver I have ever owned or used hands down.I would not take a warehouse full of them for FREE if I were required too just keep & use just one of them.
Does it rx/tx in the gmrs frequencies?
Your saying it does cb radio. Can it do gmrs as well? I use gmrs mainly.
Hi , Have you used the radio to receive on the aircraft band ? If so what did you think of it ? .
I'm looking at getting one soon and it's a choice between this and the TYT TH-9800.

Does this do AM and SSB on 10m and 6m? or at least SSB an 10m?
GOOGLE is your friend as is the manufactures web site.
Is the UV950P worth the extra TX capability for a SHTF radio, or pass and get the Yaesu FT-8900R?
Nothing is as EXCITING an an Unboxing Video. If that does not excite you then you just may be DEAD. LOL
1OFGODSOWN and I have since come a long way from this video. If you are watching this video now, you may be late to the party

in the UK weve got the 950PL which does 2 4 6 and 70 but not 10
Do you know, if the programming cable for the 920 and 950 is the same ?
Whats the receive range on this radio and can the 999 channels be divided into groups
Hi, how long is the face separation cable ??
If I use it as a cross band radio can I control it with my HT and change channels?
can this do 27.025mhz?
can you please let me know if you still like the radio am thinking of getting one? thank you
I have purchased only one Wouxon radio. I'll never buy another one. Fancy looks but that's it.
do these radios receive without the mic plugged in?
Is there a Mac software to program this, or only the .exe file?
how well has it held up
Does the radio have the ability to be programmed to transmit and receive on commercial band radio frequencies?
It will transmit on commercial aka business band vhf and uhf, or vhf-uhf public service and public safety bands but not FM or AM Broadcast band frequencies. Hello, you said you can TX on CB bands? please make a video on how to do this? or can you tell me how? Thank you
Buy a CB & it will work great there.
What do you think the max range in Miles is of this set up? Next state,to the coast or across the ocean?

so kind or type of aerial antenna be use to cover all the available band on this radio?
Yes, search on amazon or ebay for a quad band antenna. 10m/6m/2m/70cm its about 70 bucks
did u do a part 2 on this radio ? and does this radio have a voice scrambler ? if u could do a video about it and how it works that would be great ! thanks
Yes i have a video showing it in use on 10 meters. It does have a scrambler, but this function isnt used in amateur radio. 73
yes FCC rules say u can not use voice scrambling on ham radio but yes u can on police fire EMS and so on. i will look for that video thanks 73's
It is illegal to use FM on the citizens band in the United States. Also illegal on the CB is to transmit more than a 4 watt carrier on AM.
Would you still recommend this radio?
is there a efficient way to program these besides buying the RT software kit? I see that chirp is not supporting this yet. Can I import repeaters in the commander program?
You can use the software and cable that comes with it.
CHIRP does support the radio NOW.
I'm not a ham but interested in ham radio. Is there any radio that is all encompassing meaning it does everything you can do with ham assuming you have the licence to do so?
So many options to answer that question.. I could go on forever
My only question is how much did this cost you? If love to have a quad band rig for mobile and cut down on number of radios I need when I travel.
hellos you is it possible to use it in crossband 70cm with AM 11m ? thank you for your future response
Well i will have to try that..ill let you know
Thank you very much for your help 73 :)
It will crossband with anything on VFO A to anything on VFO B.

am thinging of getting one but can you please tell me if your still happy with yours?
Aiden Neoculius Yes. I use it everyday in the truck, mostly 10 meters FM, love it
This radio, receive Air Craft in AM ?
Yes

can u program with chirp
Does this have USB and LSB on 6,10,11 meters?
No it doesn't have 11 meters, and it is FM only, no ssb
rob b well i should have checked it. Yes, my radio will go 26-30mhz, transmit and rx, but no AM.
HamRadioConcepts and it didnt take software to open it up on these frequencies. 73

surely looks sup duper...vu2utz
would you consider it to be a candidate to be a manpack?

Hmm, I know the aircraft band AM can be recieved on a radio made for FM only, but it sounds weak, distorted.

Thanks Eric. That helps a lot as I'm considering buying this rig. BTW, love all your videos! You provide a great service to the Ham Community.
Have him listen on FM & it will be perfectly clear just like the TYT TH-9800 PLUS.
so this is only an FM radio?
GOOGLE it.
I AM NOT BIG ON PUTTING MY E-MAIL AND CELL NUMBER ON LINE.... 73.......
what kind of antenna set up are you using with this radio?
does the display have more digits than necessary? what is the actual TX freq range?
GOOGLE it.
