    Necrons excel at attrition and shreked the Krieg in Dead Men Walking. Granted, the Imperium didn't really know what they were going up against. The Krieg thought they were slowly winning the war, not realizing the Necrons could recover their dead bots nearly infinitely.

      From what I recall from Dead Men Walking, the Krieg generals deliberately deployed the nearest four understrength regiments to the dormant tombworld because it was a win-win situation. If the Krieg destroyed the Necron tombworld's systems before it could fully awaken, it would be an Imperial victory. If not, all Krieg would have lost would be four understrength regiments.

    Cool T'au fact- The Breacher Teams are somewhat the T'au equivalent of the Empire's Kriegers.
    Not that they're built for attrition warfare, but they do have the highest casualty rate amongst Fire Warriors. They were designed in answer to the Imperium's fortified and defensive fighting styles, and so its the ballsiest and most Krieg-like T'au that are given Laser Shotguns and charged into trenches to dig out stubborn enemy positions.

    The Iron Warriors and Kriegers were treated very similarly by the Imperium, but reacted in complete opposite ways. It could make for an interesting conflictIt on a thematic level, the zealously devoted sons vs the bitter resentful bastards. As for the match up, I would still go for the Iron Warriors cause of their daemon fuckery. I know the IW don't use daemons as much, but even daemon engines can have a harmful warp aura that can petrify guardsmen with fear and despair, I'm using "Storm of Iron" as a source for that. And while the soldiers of the Death Korps are able to restrain their emotions, I still doubt they can resist Warp magics.

      YES! People always clown on France for the Maginot line because it was a static defense. In reality, it was part of a larger plan to defend against Germany in case of an invasion. IIRC, France's plan involved sending troops north through Allied Belgium to counter German forces at the border, thus creating a full defense covered by the Maginot line and the Belgian-German border. However, near the start of WWII, Belgium redeclared it's neutrality, meaning France could no longer enact their plan without violating Belgian neutrality, and had to wait for German troops to enter Belgium first.

    Apparently underneath all that dirt gear and the gas mask the Krieg actually very attractive physically to the eye. They look a little on the young side but their noted traits is having firm gray eyes which definitely show the horror of war that they seen despite their youthful looks, and for the most part have blond flowing hair. I'm not sure if it was in the novel Krieg or in the novel Dead Men Walking in one of them a
    normal Imperial citizen catches a glimpse of a kriegsman without his helmet or gas mask and it's apparently written that he's handsome. But almost a little too young infact to even be considered a white Shield among the Cadian... it's implied that they look so young because the planet might be using unethical practices when it comes to their Vitea womb systems.
    It also goes into the unnatural feeling of uneasiness that just looking at your average Kriegsman can give. It's not implied that their blanks like jurgen from The cain novels. But it's definitely implied that there's something about them that isn't quite right compared to what a normal human feels. My personal belief and this is just my theory is that the repeated use of those wombs is slowly but surely Dulling and dumbing-down the Soul potential. Like right now there may be about 15% of the way to being a blank. Clearly a good chunk of what makes a human a human is missing from them. But it's not enough to the point where they are completely seen as a void Within the emotional Spectrum. However I believe that if you gave it like maybe another hundred Millennia or so the planet would just be pumping out blanks for their standard infantry soldiers. just think about that for a moment just think about how powerful of a weapon against chaos that would be to have an entire Army of Imperial Guardsmen for not only blanks but also have the almost psychotic mindset of the kriegsman. That might actually even be the plan. Maybe not implying that was originally designed. But it definitely could be something that might occur in the Far Far Future, that maybe someone found out about the flaw and did something to ensure that the flaw would, after they are turned into corpse starch and don't have to worry about the consequences, end up manifesting, something beneficial. As long as a blank is given an order they will follow it out Jurgen is proof of this. Now imagine Army of Jergens all led by commissars with the the same amount of Madness and balls-to-the-wall self-preservation as cain himself. The Imperium would be reclaimed from the rip caused by the eye of Terror and its resulting destruction within at least 325 years and that's not even including needing to use the primaris Marines. If you included them into the calculation it wouldn't even take 35 years standard

    About the Shovel bit, many world war I soldiers prefered using shovels and entrenching tools to bayonets in the close confines of the trenches. Here is a good quote from "all quiet on the western front" which is based on Remarque's own experiences in the trenches of the war
    "In any case, the bayonet isn't as important as it used to be. It's more usual now to go into the attack with hand-grenades and your entrenching tool. The sharpened spade is a lighter and more versatile weapon - not only can you get a man under the chin, but more to the point, you can strike a blow with a lot more force behind it. That's especially true if you can bring it down diagonally between the neck and the shoulder, because then you can split down as far as the chest. When you put a bayonet in, it can stick, and you have to give the other man a hefty kick in the guts to get it out.
    "

      The cool thing about the IG is that it has an answer to everything through the sheer variety of specialist regiments at its disposal, so why wouldn't it be cool enough for Krieg to be a hard counter to several of the Imperium's biggest threats and not all of them? Like, is it really less cool if it takes a cooperative effort from several regiments, each locking down a certain aspect of the battlefield, to take out some of the scarier threats than it is to have one that does everything extremely well? About the shovel, it is history time ! During WW1, heads of the french army thought bayonet was a good melee weapon based on previous conflicts. It was in an open filed battle, XIXth century style.Unfortinatly, in trenches, with very little space when your are drag into melee combat, a gigantic stick with a little knife at the end is not the best weapon. So the french treachmen started using the shovels for combat, despite their primarly purpose as a tool for the trenches. When it was time, a guy going to the front with just a sharp shovel and a couple of grenades wasn't so uncommon.
    So yes, I think kriegsmen primarly use shovel during battles in their confort zone : trench battles.
    (I am only talking about frenchen because I only know about them, but since both sides were doiing more or less the same I assume germans also used shovels a lot)

    • @Conartist666
      @Conartist666 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      While i do not have the historical sources to back it up, i am pretty sure the use of shovels was even briefly mentioned in the novel "Nothing new at the Western front".
      Where the old and experienced recruits tell the new guys to just use their shovels instead of their bayonets.
      So it seems likely that the germans were in a pretty similar situation. ...shocking, i know. :)

      so, in WW1, bayonets weren't little knives like they would be in WW2, they were still 1.5 foot long (at minimum) blades with a focus on stabbing, less so on cutting. Remember that calvary was still believed to be viable at the beginning of the war and infantry were supposed to use a rifle with a bayonet as a spear to defend themselves. So a lot of people did do ad-hoc weapons for trench warfare, not just shovels (which were wonderful, you sharpen the edge for what is effectively an axe, and at the same time you don't have to carry something extra with you), but makeshift maces, knives, punch daggers, brass knuckles, anything that could be thrown around in tight quarters. It's only as the war goes on that you start getting specialized equipment/units, like the german storm troopers who were specialized for raiding trenches and would usually be armed with pistols and bags of grenades

    • @staringgasmask
      @staringgasmask 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      At the beggining? Perhaps, but then trench knives and maces were introduced to fill that particular gap, including a switch in bayonet tactics, with soldiers often removing the bayonets and using them as standalone knives in the trench. Shovels would be a desperate last resource by the time specialized trench weapons had been introduced, and useless by 1918 when the submachinegun was introduced, as you can still harm with a knife while being injured on the ground, while being almost impossible to do with a shovel

    I have mixed feelings and this video drums up a lot of thoughts I have. Unfortunately, I think people are going to come here and start spamming said 'Dead Memes' in spite of some of the points here. And... I guess, in a way, that's okay. But it's also sad. Thematically, the Krieg are extremely German. Not just German, of course, but it's the backbone there. The flared stahlhelm mixed with the Adrian helmet. The Lucius no. 98 being a reference to the K98 used by the Imperial German Army. Hell, their native designs are even a reference to Germanic names, culture or artists. Brunnhilde, Gotterdamerung Howitzer, the Ragnarok tank, the Blitzen artillery platform...
    And there's something neat about that. A society near swallowed up by war naming their machines after references to old plays, artists and theatrics. A retention of the Human in the soul-devouring Martial. Instead, people puppet a joke they heard from a friend that heard from a friend that was introduced to the setting by said joke by a friend, etc, etc. Hell, Kriegers in the ye olde 3e Codex were originally shown with an axe looped in their belt. Not a shovel, an axe. The shovel jokes didn't come about until 4chan's /tg/ board began making jokes about supplies going off to Imperial institutions were replaced by shipments of Kriegers who'd build fortifications in odd places. They didn't use them as weapons. They used them as tools. The joke changed, as they do, but the lack of understanding of the origin and the reason has led to a flanderization of a frankly amazing regiment.
    They're one of the most highly trained 'regular' Imperial forces. Just behind Cadians, honestly. They're not Scions, of course, but they're damned good. And to get that, to create a mass produced force that is that quality, they're made of broken child soldiers. There's a duality to the Krieg when you look down deep enough that you, for a moment, touched on. The pitiable bit and the stoic half. I think people waver into one or the other too much.
    The best exploration of the Krieg, I believe, has come in Steve Lyon's shortstory 'Left for Dead'. We don't have a Krieger committing warcrimes, slaying aliens or dying hard. He's breaking the rules. He's going AWOL. He's exploring if all of it, all of the Sacrifice, is truly worth it. He takes on a dead man's name. He befriends a little local girl. He stands a head above the Imperial citizenry, not only in build but in action. When others fear, he acts. When others waver, he trudges forward. Where others flinch, he endures.
    But he also builds connections. He has yearnings. He doesn't just tolerate the little girl, he befriends her. They almost take on a thin sibling like connection. And then the setting reasserts itself and the story comes to a close. It's bittersweet, it's interesting and it explores what the Korps is about. It's not about being suicidal. The Krieg aren't suicidal. They're driven and religiously motivated, yes, but the goal of death in the Emperor's name is just an aspect of their belief. The Valhallans are willing to die, after all. Hell, the Vostroyans know much about owing debts.
    The Krieg are the only ones that truly uphold sacrifice to such an ideal, though. They have given up everything and continue to do so. They have offered their home, their history, their wonders and their arts, their culture and their name and their future all onto the alter of war and burnt it in the attempt to find mercy from a stoic corpse-god. They fight, tooth and nail, but their own abilities means they cannot be forgiven. To be forgiven is to lose a purpose, to reduce efficiency, to take away what it means to be Korps.
    They are damned by their own duality and there's something sad yet heartening about that. The attempt in spite of it all. When Stringstorm released his Krieg song, I disliked it. It felt too self-weepy for a Krieg song. Theirs is a martial tradition, unbowed but accepting of the weight of what must come. It is discipline, iron and steel, but it is pitted and worn. Tired, but inexorable and unwilling to stop. But people look at them, see them as 'funny suicide shovel man' and all of the interesting bits get run out by a constant barrage of the same worn out jokes.
    And then we ended up with the latest Krieg novel and good god was it fuckin' terrible.

      Sidenote, the German Empire in WW1 did not use the Kar98. They used the Gewehr 98, which is literally a Kar98 but a little bit longer. Or, I guess the Kar 98 is the Gewehr 98 but shorter since the latter came first. The Kar 98 was used by Nazi Germany during WW2, which isn't what the Krieg are.

      One aspect that I would see in Krieg is that, while they have this "grim tenacity" upon them, they are still HUMAN, but adding strange quirks in their life, like:
      - intricate altars to the Emperor and its Saints, or some venerated figure (Jurten) made from discarded materials in the best "trench art" style;
      - choir singing, where they would sing their own version of "The Watch on the Rhine" in a solemn way, to show their determination, their faith, and their HOPE for a future;
      - gallow's humor, with trenches being given addresses like "Blown Head", "Bayonet Crossing", "Grenade Alley", etc, with also funny plaques saying "Nr. Of days without accidental grenade explosions", or stuff like that;
      - "trench painting", an interesting method of meditation in which a Krieger (generally one more inclined to the arts) would take a portrait tripod, a clean canvas, brushes, paint, palette, go "up the trench", lay the material, and make a painting of the no-man's-land with a style resembling the ones during the 1910s and 20s;
      - their humor would be DAAAAARK, as in: when they are searching for their target, they would take the head of an enemy corpse, and use it like a puppet like:
      DK: "Hey, you! What is your name?"
      Head(DK using a very whinny voice): "I am Bitchy von Tot, a sissy enemy who died like the little fag that I am."
      DK: "Where is your base?"
      Head: "Oh, the base where the other sissy-parents of Bitchy are over there." (Moves head to point towards the enemy base).
      DK: "Good. Now-" (Krieger gives a pimp slap to the head, to "sent it away" and remove it from his hand) "- don't bother us. We are working."

      Also, another thing: EVERY Militarum Regiment have their own Scions: they are not from the Schola Progenium, but from Veterans who had survived things that could kill a normal Guardsman a thousand times over, with each Regiment calling it with a different title.

    Once I read a bit more about how France was defeated in early WW2, I stopped summing it up as “the Germans went around the Maginot Line” and started saying “the Belgians dismantled half of France’s defenses in a burst of stupidity after the Allied betrayal of Czechoslovakia, which let the Germans march through all but unopposed.”

    One oversighted aspect: DKoK are Siege regiements. Not Defensive Regiments. They assault, they attack, they move.

    On the Shovel meme: It was actually a ‘trend’ at least in the German army to use shovels and Granades when storming trenches, cause shovels where easier to remove after killing someone (leaving less time for your enemy to shoot you, whilst you try to figure out how to get your bayonet out off the other guys rib cage)
    So at least there is some real life pendent for the meme (although it is grossly overdone)

    In reference to the Necrons beating Krieg, that actually happens in the novel "Dead Men Walking."
    Spoilers ahead for the novel:
    An Imperial mining world is revealed to be a slowly awakening tomb world, and its PDF are all but massacred. The nearest Imperial force is a regiment of Krieg on leave, who swiftly arrive and begin their usual tricks of turning whole city blocks into rubble, and digging huge-ass defense lines.
    As it turns out, the Necrons are better at attrition warfare than the Kriegers, who, while inflicting some casualties with melta and plasma, are slowly whittled away before retreating and abandoning the planet to its fate.

    Fun little fact about the name of the planet, in the new krieg book they actually make mention of how they all knew that the world's name Krieg literally meant war, and at least prior to the civil war they all thought it was a bit weird how their world's name was essentially war in another language inspite of them having been in a long ass age of peace. If you ever do more of these videos please do one on the Tallarn desert raiders. I fuckin love those guys and how they got virus bombed by the iron warriors and simply did not care and baited the iron warriors to mass deploying everything from titans to legions to try and wipe them out, before they gave up and gave Tallarn the dub.

    I think the thing I find most funny is that the source material for this fan favorite faction is about as expensive as the whole army now. Good luck getting an imperial armor book nowadays.
    But yeah, I think and and a lot of other people's adoration for the kriegers is just the fact that their schtick is so perfect for the setting. 40k is already a setting with grimdark shit like small Tyranids and Gretchen being used to clog weapons batteries with their bodies.
    Then the boys from krieg come in and march unfazed into machine gun lines. The idea of that level of fanaticism/ disregard for ones life is hilarious. Like immediately your brain goes, ok what's the worst big ugly monstrous thing that would make even a space marine piss himself, now throw some death korps at it and watch the big ugly start cowering in fear. Like that's the kinda thing krieg inspires, in a way because it's an infinite tide you can bloodlet on the enemies it suddenly lightens the tone of things.

    Krieg is that type of thing where you love the thing, but hate the fans.
    Also I think their main advantage is the morale aspect. These people demand the most inhospitable warzones, ones where other guard regiments would suffer morale issues because they know that's their strength. Also they are calculative to the point where they'll actively sacrifice themselves to allow other regiments to retreat first instead of going hand in hand, if the other regiment is considered in some way better. A Cadian is better at killing the Emperor's enemies than I, a humble Kriegsman, thus if I die, and this Cadian can retreat and fight another day there will be a sum total more dead xenos and or heretics in the galaxy than if it was switched, so obviously I'll just let them go first. The Krieg guardsmen are practically regarded and expended with same consideration as ammunition or the equipment they wear, and they all agree that this makes perfect sense.

    I quite enjoy krieg as I have a deep interest in the ww1 style of trench warfare, and how complex and advanced it got by the time 1917 rolled around and the entente started to make moves on The Germans, and krieg embodies this perfectly and I love them for it.
    Btw, krieg guardsmen using shovels as a primary weapon isn’t as far fetched as it sounds. If a krieg regiment is engaging in trench warfare with say traitor guard , once krieg troops reach the enemy trenches, the conditions become less than ideal for a lasgun + bayonet combo, due to the cramped conditions one finds in a trench. A shovel (entrenching tool) is a very handy improvised melee weapon that’s more suited for the brutal, close up fighting in trenches due to its size and ability to still mess someone up, in WW1 for example, when both sides sent parties to raid the opponents trenches, they often left behind their rifles and went with revolvers and improvised melee weapons such as maces or shovels, much easier to swing a shovel than a rifle/bayonet combo. Oh and later on the Germans used SMG’s in their stormtrooper units due to their compact size

    I will say some of these armies are more neutral to me, even matches where it comes down to the forces at play more so then anything else. The 4 I can think of are Tyranid, Iron Warrior, Nurgle, and Necrons.
    Tyranid: While the hive mind can adapt it does rely a large amount on large wave charges, something the Kriegsmen will be able to deal with more easily. If they try to burrow under the trenches, the Kriegsmen got Engineers who specialize in that warfare as well with specialist gas bombs, something the nids tend to not like. I'd say it comes down to if the Tyranids figure out a plan fast enough before Krieg does enough damage.
    Iron Warriors: Both masters of this type of warfare, I firmly say it's down to whose ready first. Krieg may have numbers, but as a handful of Iron Warriors showed on Vraks, that doesn't mean shit to them. Then again the Iron Warriors didn't go on the attack and were being whittled down faster then they could Krieg so it's even to me.
    Nurgle: Again, 2 masters of Attrition. Nurgle has some tougher guys but their slower speed means the Korps artillery is gonna be useful. Of course Nurgle could beat them but they'd need stronger plagues and gas then usual to beat guys specialty trained and suited to contaminated areas. Again, 2 masters of that type of warfare, it's down to the forces at play. Nurgle did well enough on Vraks but again, didn't stop them nor were they really destroyed.
    Necrons: I think you see a theme here. Attrition warfare. There is a major battle of Krieg vs. Necrons that Krieg almost won till the populace turned on Krieg for being too harsh. But, that regiment was redeploing elsewhere and I don't think at full strength so maybe a little more krieg power would have won and sealed them, I don't know. What I do know is it's 2 armies of vast, fearless warriors, one with better tech, the other who can outnumber and a bit more outmanuver.

  • @zerochaotics1135
    @zerochaotics1135 ปีที่แล้ว

    Small point outs, the lasgun utilized by krieg is a pattern that only 15 shots in its capacity but with a few shots can put down a apace marine, burning through the cerimite armor. Unsupported death korps of krieg detachments, not full regiments but small units were able to counter traitor marine forces when encountered, most likely at great cost; it is humans against space marines still after all, but they ended up winning engagements.
    In relation to the necrons, yeah a fully awakened or even partially awakened tomb world would be a tough battle, however oddly enough the Krieg have actually beaten the Necrons in attrition warfare, and almost blew up a dormant tomb with a nuke. What stopped the kriegsmen was the local populous ambushing the transport team because they were tired of the kriegs way of fighting (that being casualties are acceptance during battle, be it soldier or civilian) and had also begun worshipping the necrons. With vraks around the corner the fight against the necrons was abandoned as no more losses were acceptable on this world.
    Krieg battle doctrine is to spend lives as needed, they excel in attrition style warfare, be it as attackers or defenders, but they're not good at the other forms of fighting. That's why there is so many types of regimens with many being specialized for types of war, types of environments, or both.
    I love the kriegsmen, they have there ups and their downs, but all in all when people actually look at them and their philosophy, the Death Korps of Krieg are an effective and efficient fighting force, undeterred by even the worst the galaxy can throw at them, they understand the pice a victory can be, but pay it with tactics, strategies, and equipment that see to it that victory is won no matter how many troops die.
    The most interesting thing though is how much trust the Imperium bureaucracy actually has in the Death Korps, as they are one of the few units in the Imperium that are allowed to employ combined arms tactics.
