So, your baby is in the NICU. This is pretty common: 10 to 15% of newborns spend time in the NICU.
What to Expect When: Your Baby Goes to the NICU
    Before
Common reasons babies go to the NICU: Prematurity, heart problems, birth defects, breathing irregularities and traumatic birth.
Premature birth is the most common reason. 1 in 10 babies are born before 37 weeks.
Some parents know before birth that baby will need to spend some time in the NICU. For others, it's unexpected.
Thankfully, there are other things you can do while you wait for your baby to be discharged.
    1. Pump, if you plan on breastfeeding. It'll help you build up your supply.
    2. Don't bottle up your emotions. Share your feelings with a partner, a therapist or other NICU parents.
    3. Take every opportunity for skin-to-skin, or "kangaroo care." It can help your baby gain weight, stabilize his heart rate and help with nursing. Otherwise, connect by stroking a cheek or arm in the incubator, or sitting nearby.
    4. Talk. Sing. Read stories. Your NICU may help you diaper and bathe the baby, too.
    After
Your baby will be discharged based on: breathing control, respiratory and temperature stability, feeding skills and weight gain. And your doctor will teach you about your baby's specific needs, including how to give medicine and recognize early signs of illness.
It's important to take breaks when you need them so you're ready when it's time to leave the hospital. It will be best for everyone to have you feeling as strong as possible when you finally do come home.

My baby spent 9 days there. Most distressing time of my life. Thankfully the outcome was good, and she is almost 3 months now, and thriving.

Did she come home yet? My son was born almost 4 months early and he just turned 2 months the other day. He still needs to be in hospital at least another month or so

Just spent our 9th day in nicu. Still going and not sure when we will be leaving but looks like it’ll be soon so long as she continues to make progress. Not a premature baby but she had what started out as a heart murmur that turned into some serious issue with her heart and we are still unsure of what it is but we will be seeing a cardiologist outpatient. She was flown to hospital in St. Louis and it’s been easily the darkest time in my entire life. I think i will be traumatized from seeing my daughter nearly stop breathing and turn blue. Before I knew it there was 7 people in the room all with urgency in their voices. She had a tube placed in her throat as well as 3 IVs (one in her umbilical) , was put in fentanyl and a paralytic so for 3 days I didn’t see my baby move or hear her make a sound. Thank God, today she is basically herself. She just has a feeding tube. She has made progress so fast that I feel like I’ve got whiplash. I’m so grateful for how well she’s doing. Just having some trouble getting her to eat enough but she’s definitely just exhausted from all that’s happened. She’s had an eventful first week and a half of life. But I’m terribly sad this happened at all. Seeing your baby like this isn’t something I’d wish on any mother or father. We are staying strong for her and dreaming of the day we get to take her home. We have a five year old that’s been with our parents back and fourth which has also been very difficult. One baby is sick and the other we haven’t been able to see if not through FaceTime. There’s no way to prepare for something like this. Having support is the best thing during this time. Sometimes your head goes to dark places and if you let it, it will consume you. I’m very up and down and probably will be till we get home and maybe even after since we don’t know what happened still. We have prayed daily and have stayed by her side as she continues to grow and regain her energy. I send my love to anyone else going through having your baby in the nicu. It’s just awful. I pray all these beautiful babies make it home safe and sound. ❤

Need more videos on the NICU experience and premature babies. It's not talked about enough. My beautiful boy was a 26 weeker and he is now a very healthy 6 month old but I had to figure it all out on my own.

My son was born 26 weeks and 2 days! He is still in hospital; he probably be there til mid October. Did the hospital not give you any resources? Mine has been sending online video classes on different subjects but I am trying to find more information on caring for my preemie baby after discharge.

@@Bloomsong1020 hopefully he's coming home soon! My hospital did great but I didn't know anything about prematurity or what I should expect prior to having him. So many babies go through the NICU process but the focus is usually on full-term fully healthy babies.

My daughter was born at 27 weeks gestation. She weighed 1 pound 9 ounces or 709 grams. She spent 101 days in the NICU. It was a very stressful time. To help with the stress, I would read to her through her isolet. I would also buy dolls just to get the dresses and put them on her. I also made pajamas and dolls while sitting next to her.

So hard to have a baby in nicu. My third, a baby girl was born in Jan 12, 2024 at 36/6 weeks. Developed pneumonia and it’s her third day in nicu. It’s just beyond sadness what I feel to see her like that. Thank God she’s stable.

I spent 10 days there to be monitored because of my mothers back injury. One tip: Enclamysia babies don't really want to be out early but we have to. If you can mothers, get your BP checked every trimester.
