I'm a bit surprised that you said nothing about Amazing Penguin's soundtrack. I never heard (of) this game before and I was super surprised when I heard that deep, good sounding bass and the rest of the melodies. Definitely something else, especially for a GameBoy game, imo.
Wow I had almost forgotten about this game. I used to borrow it from a friend all the time. It was one of those games that you basically owned after a while lol. I was never able to beat it though.
Tried Amazing Penguin tonight because of this video and I swear, if I had this as a kid I would never have had a boring car ride or doctor's appointment in my life. I wish our little penguin dude controlled a bit better, but even with that in mind you very easily get into the zone with this game and waste the hours away thanks to infinite continues and easy to remember passwords. I especially like how many different musical themes the game has. Clearly they spent a lot of their space budget on wonderful tunes.
A pity this isn't available on the 3DS Virtual Console. It'd be a lovely forgotten gem for that service. Also, since you mentioned Bionic Commando, I'm really looking forward to your overview of its GB port/remake someday. It's quite an excellent game, too.
So I picked up the game based on the review, and I love it. It's simple, fun and addictive. I love simple and I'm a huge fan of Nintendo Game & Watch games.
I don't think the similarities to Pengo are an intentional shoutout; 'a creature living in the arctic who kicks objects that slide as if on ice to attack' strikes me as a concept that is easy to develop independently of others who have already done it.
The next time you GBW a puzzler, I personally recommend the following intro: "Puzzle puzzle puzzle, puzzle PUZZLE puzzle puzzle puzzle puzzle: Puzzle puzzle puzzle." If it's anime AND puzzle, mix the word 'anime' in as desired. It's up to you, but I think it would be fitting.
I’ve just bought this game off the back of this review - another one for the growing collection / addiction 🤦♂️ - by the way this game reminds me of an MS DOS game I used to play (unsuccessfully) when I was younger that was called “Boxer Rebellion” - similar ideas - www.mobygames.com/game/dos/boxer-rebellion - th-cam.com/video/VUvzguB9hWk/w-d-xo.html - I think that game was a copy of the arcade game Amidar
Here after this game got listed on Limited Run Games.

WOW!!! I can still remember playing this game along with Lock and Chase. Got me through a lot of boring doctors visits and car trips. Good times...
Top notch work as always.
Just bought Amazing Penguin, and it is my new addiction.
Loved this game, really solid Natsume soundtrack.

This was my first (non-Tetris) Game Boy game. I think I was drawn in by the nice pics revealed.
It’s no Picross, but I still remember it fondly.
Take a look at Triple Punch and Pepper II, both arcade games from 1982, which are also a big part of Amazing Penguin's ancestry.

Can't help but notice the fact that the inclusion of penguins was generally a seal of quality in the early days of the Game Boy.
Penguins make *everything* better. It's the law.
This genuinely looks fun.
My heart was in my throat when I saw the Bionic Commando dude make that huge drop... but then he safely landed on that little hut.
That's the swing that separates the Bionic Commandos from the Bionic Babies.
Also recommend the ridiculously named spankys quest

No mention of Amidar? The whole "capturing territory" mechanic looks like it's taken straight from that.

That's awesome. I love when these videos turn people on to games they never would have played otherwise!
I don't have this one yet, and haven't seen it in the wild for some time. I'm going to have to be on the lookout for it!

Pedant mode- not arctic, antarctic.
Pengo was developed by Coreland (later renamed Banpresto when it was acquired by Bandai) and published by Sega.
Bionic Commando was the first game I ever finished. So many fond childhood memories around blowing up Hitler's head.
this was the first gameboy game i ever played. 10 years ago! Probably not as long ago as many others
Limited Run re-print incoming!
Music really reminds me of Spanky's Quest and Tail Gator.
Oh, it's Natsume's take on Amidar.
Finally a game wirth while. Gotta try it!
this is Pepper II for sure!
Well you sold me on getting a copy of this game. It kind of reminds me of Pepper II or Amidar!
Penguins are famously non-avian birds
Bionic Battler, eh? Will be interesting to see if you can make more sense of it than I could as a kid.
What's the tune that plays over your coming soon segment? Sounds vaguely familiar somehow.
Apollo, it's the next episode preview music from Neon Genesis Evangelion.
Somebody asks this on every video
completely unrelated but whats your ending song?
Ah, another retro gaming quality channel. I could tell from the reverent intro already. 👍
This looks Amazing. I know what I am going to be playing soon.
Natsume! Was this their first gameboy game?
It was! Unless I've somehow forgotten something!?
i remember not getting this game at all as a kid 😅
I loved this game.
nice! gotta find the game on ebay now :)
God, I played the ever living shit outta this game on my GameBoy Pocket way back in the day. Simple as hell, but addictive as crack.
How weird...this reminds me of Painter on the Atari Jaguar.
It seems a lot like Amidar or other "Grid capture" games.
I heard no Morgan Freeman.

It sucks that recently a boxed copy has gone for over $300 =\
Ouch that's steep!
amidar (1981) is the closest to this.
they arnt black rocks they are evil seals and the ghost are polar bears
Wow I can't believe they ported Linux to the gameboy
what pac man for gameboy should of been.
Wait wait wait. You can kick the wall to stun enemies in Pengo?! o_O
I will play amazing penguin. 😀👍🎮
