    I have the SSH-6 and have thought the noise level is deeply unimpressive, so I was 'glad' to find another user of a sibling mic has the same experience. I've been looking at the C02 as an alternative for talking heads videos, and your video is helpful. Thank you.

    Definitely more mid range on the zoom mic. I think it's clearer overall and a cleaner sound. Just got the H5 at 40% off and love it. Now need to save for the shotgun mic.

    I was experimenting and I took the ridiculously long foam windscreen that came with my rode video micro, put it over the samson c02, and then put the dead cat I have for my H5''s XY module over the foam windscreen...and it works...*so well*. I'm sitting in a room next to a giant air conditioner and two oscillating fans on me and the noise floor is non-existent, but I can get right up on the mic and really get a good, bassy sound without any plosives.

    SGH-6 needs to be connected to a compatible device like the H5 or H6 like you suggested, then the H5 is connected to your mixer. The Samson CO2 is only connected to your mixer, so the SGH-6 has a bit of audio "processing" done in front unlike the Samson, which explains the added hiss.

    Between the two I like the sound of the Samson, but I think there are better choices out there for your travel rig. Audio Technica and Rode both have good shotguns in the $200 range that would be better for you.
    You mention the supercardioid pattern. The last couple months I've been using my AT 4047 in figure 8 pattern as that is an even tighter pattern than supercardioid, as long as you don't have any sound coming from the back, so it works well in my booth. Might be fun to explore that idea more on the show.

    The preamps in the XLR inputs are far better than in the different microphone capsules using a Zoom field recorder.
    I think the advantage of SGH-6 is that it's small and very easy to use, no cables etc...
    My experience is that it sounds good enough in the field. And you are prepared almost immediately out there.
    Thanks.

    Have you tried changing the mic position when using directional mics? I think raising them a few inches and pointing them down towards your chin gets you more of that chest bass without losing the clarity.

    the pencil mics have less cage around them, like a sm57 kinda, so you can get better signal to noise and prox effect. this just doesn't work for vocals because once you get that close, the breath pops. But at a few inches its fine and good. They sound flat.

    They are two different mics. The Samson is a vocal and instrument mic. The capsule is in the front thus have proximity effect. The zoom is a shotgun mics and the capsule is further back having less proximity effect and less low frequencies. . EQ is your friend. Good video

  • @starportomega4126
    @starportomega4126 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The self noise is probably because shotgun mics have to work with very low SPL and so probably has a pre-amp inside, on top of the pre in your recorder or mixer. Shotguns work by cancelling out the noise coming from the side, leaving only the noise from the front. This is what the vents are fore; they create a phase cancellation effect. As a result, the audio that remains is much lower than the equivalent audio from an omni condenser.
    Anyway, this means that the audio that's left - waves coming from the front - is going to be at a lower overall level than what you'd get out of a mic without sight a tight pattern. So the transducer on a shotgun requires more gain to get the same job done.
    So the pre-amp on a shotgun mic needs much more gain than a more conventional omni or cardioid mic. And gain is gain... meaning that it will raise the noise floor, right along with the program material.
    Short version... unless it's made with an extremely low noise circuit, a shotgun mic is likely to have more self noise, because its internal pre-amp needs significantly more gain to get the same effect.

    I find it interesting I can almost not tell the difference but I am listening through AirPods. Through decent laptop speakers it was very slight and personally I find the proximity Test too Basey and it becomes unnatural.
    Although I did notice the difference quite clearly when you were talking about the boosted highs on the shotgun at that point I liked the Samson is better.
    Personally I have the Samson C02s as well as the Alesis AM2s.
    I bought the AM2s and I really like them on just anything, then somebody gave me the C02s and they sound good but I find they have a reduce sensitivity compared to the other ones. I'm coming at this more from the live sound end of things.

    I'm glad you did a comparison between these two! The Zoom mic does sound higher pitched to me, and sounds like it has a bit more self noise. I used my C02s on a recent project, and I noticed they are prone to plosives like you said, even when using the foam piece it came with and a pop filter added to it, when I had the talent about three inches away, although they weren't trying not to create plosives, as you do. Good audio quality mics, but I may try my AT875R next time I shoot with the same person in the same location, to test out the difference between those two mics, although they are different.

    I thought the Samson sounded better but neither sounded great when you got really close up. IF you want a cheaper mic for travelling you might want to look at the Oktava Mk012. I got the film set version. Its a pencil condenser, hyper-cardioid though you can get different capsules for it and pretty inexpensive. Mine sounds a little "dark" (not sure if that's the right way to describe it) but clarity is good.

  • @AleLoy
    @AleLoy 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Are you sure that the Samsons are super-cardioid? According to the website RecordingHacks.com those were initially cardioid (2003) and from 2004 onwards Samson started producing them with a super-cardioid polar pattern.
    This seams very strange to me. Apart from being weird that a manufacturer will change the polar pattern of a microphone without changing the model name (although absolutely not impossible); I couldn't find any official source on the Samson's website to confirm the fact that now these microphones are made super-cardioid.
    Amazon and other websites that are currently selling them state that they are cardioid. On the current Samson web page they are listed as cardioid too.
    It would be awesome to figure this out, as the polar pattern in a mike like that is kinda important.
    Maybe you happen to know? Maybe there is a spec sheet that came with them?
    Nice vid as always and thanks for the great job

    Like others, I thought that the self-noise on the Zoom SH-6 was noticeably worse than the C02. I did like the sound on the SH-6 better. I own the C02s and a Zoom H5, but no SGH-6. After hearing the demo, I'll not purchase the SGH-6. My big takeaway was to use the CO2s for interview podcasts with my Zoom H5. The thought had never entered my mind. I was thinking of buying a second ATR2100 for 2 person podcasts. Now I'll save the money. THANKS!

    I've just ordered a Zoom H6, after seeing your recommendations for the H5. I wanted the extra channels on the H6 for recording drums, but I will mainly be using it for recording ASMR stuff and location recording. To my ears, I prefer the sound of the Samson mic to the Zoom shotgun mic, at least for your voice. Have you ever tried the Rode M5 pencil condensers ? They come in a stereo pair and just a little bit more expensive than the Samsons, would love to you know your thoughts on those.

    OK so second comment on the same video. I came very close to buying the Samson's but then there was an offer on Rode M5s (which are quite similar) so they weren't much more money and on paper were quieter - and they were black which is very important ;) But when I did some tests I found that self noise on the M5s was just a little too much for someone speaking softly in an interview situation you describe so I sent them back. The Samson's may have narrower acceptance angle and be a little better but my gut feeling is that two people having an intimate (and quiet) conversation at a table may get hissy. Probably I need to spend more or carry on flicking a shotgun back and forth between us.

    How does the Zoom SGH-6 compare to the Zoom SSH-6 Stereo Shotgun Microphone Capsule? I realize that the SSH-6 is stereo mid side but it says it can be mono as well. This microphone works with the H6 and came out with the H5 release which was at least 1 year after the H6. It's $150.00 on Amazon. Thanks.

  • @The-Logician

    Given the fact this video is on youtube and the audio is likely compressed quite a bit, I find the Samson sounds pretty good actually. Trying to listen with a good set of monitoring earphones and the Samson sounds good for your voice. I'm looking at Samson CO2's as a cheap entry into a set of super-cardioid mics for interviews, my TH-cam videos, and or indoor dialog situations for low budget films. My main shotgun mic is the Sennheiser MKH-416 but without a ton of room sound treatment, I can't really use it indoors that much. At least, not in my house where all the surfaces including floors are hard surfaces (not a spec of carpet in the place) and reverb is terrible. I'm hoping this set of mics will handle that setup better, and if not, well, I'm not out a whole lot of money.

    I'm curious why you favor SD mics for VO work. In the right environment a shotgun obviously works, but comb filtering can become a factor in smaller rooms, which is why sound for film favors hypercardiods inside. Not knocking your choices at all - what you're doing obviously works well (and it doesn't hurt that you have a fantastic voice), but I've always favored LD mics for any vocal work unless I have to use it on a boom pole or at a distance. Anyway, thanks in advance and thanks for the channel.

    • @NadirNovelties
      @NadirNovelties 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      OH: and: foam windscreens are really designed to prevent breezes, not pops. If you're booming with a mic inside, the foam is usually good enough to get rid of the whoosh when you go back and forth, but there's no way it's going to stop a plosive, even at a distance. A cat will do better, but you'll start to hear it changing the character of the mic. Pop filters don't interfere with any audible frequencies, so they're always the better option.

    Personally, the Zoom sounds like it has a little more presence to it, and I think it evens out the frequency range of your voice. The Samson sounds, to my ear, like they have a bit of a wet cloth thrown over them that doesn't go well with your voice. You naturally have a deeper, rounded tone to your voice, and the Samson makes you sound like some kid is playing your videos through his car's subwoofer.
    One man's opinion, not to be confused with fact. My vote is the Zoom SGH-6 in this particular case.

    • @brukts3361
      @brukts3361 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I was thinking the same. It's weird that I had to scroll down for this comment.
      There are some unpleasant sibilant bits in the SGH-6, but it's likely much more accurate to real sound. The zoom mics in general are field recording mics so I think they'll in general be more "accurate" for what that's worth. The samson felt muddy using your voice.
      I think it's similar with the CAD E 100s he likes so much. It's not as bassy which is a perfect complement to an otherwise bassy voice.

    every microphone has this its called the noise floor,and the more you pay the higher the noise floor(meaning less hiss)

    • @krane15
      @krane15 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Every electronic device has it. But you never hear it unless you're in a quiet room and there is no other sounds. Which is never unless you're a recording engineer in a sound studio.

    Does the C02 sound better with a cloudlifter?

    • @BoothJunkie
      @BoothJunkie  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A cloudlifter won't help in this situation. The CO2 requires phantom power and a cloudlifter does not send phantom power to the mic (even though the cloudlifter itself uses phantom power)

    • @FunnyGuyTimmy
      @FunnyGuyTimmy 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Booth Junkie wait so the C02 WONT get phantom power if a cloudlifter is plugged in between it and the interface?

    • @BoothJunkie
      @BoothJunkie  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      correct.

    • @FunnyGuyTimmy
      @FunnyGuyTimmy 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Booth Junkie i have so good news for you. If you have a phantom power device between the mic and the lifter then the lifter into the interface you still get power to the mic and the extra 20db of gain. Thats my setup and how I have gotten cleaner sound with all my mics. condensers and dynamics

      Booth Junkie but a potable take on the road solution for you by a long shot but may help in studio.

    What's the particularity of a "shotgun" compared with a condenser/dynamic?

    • @simonnordberg162
      @simonnordberg162 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      A shotgun microphone is also a condenser microphone. It uses an interference tube to reject sound coming from the sides, making it very directional.

    Does anyone know if the underlying hiss can be removed in an app like Audition? Is there a way to reduce or eliminate it with either mic? Thanks!

      Its insignificant. You only hear it in a quiet room when there is no sounds -- and why would you ever be doing that?

    TSA wouldn't be so bad if you didn't have the expectation that you might not have half of what you went through with and be completely violated. You Should say to them do you how much it costs? yes you're signing a waiver before you touch it.

    Without any real room tone in your booth and without you moving too much there doesn’t seem to be a real test of the pattern. Why don’t you test it in a way or environment that exemplifies this in a practical way. To me the zoom seems a bit brighter/crispier.

    1) I don't care about a talking head. I just want to hear the content clearly and succinctly. 2) A mic isn't an alien device. How hard is it for the TSA to figure out? 3) The Samson has slightly more timbre but its also more susceptible to plosives. Something much more important to avoid. The Zoom is a bit higher but without a doubt more pleasant to listen to over time.

      Clinton Maher Yeah most small diaphragm pencil mics are designed for instrument recording. But he said he wants something that's portable and he won't mind too much if it's lost, broken, or stolen.
