Congrats again and again!!! I hope that someday you will review the CM4 by Line Audio. Insane quality mic. For me among the greatest sdc's available right now. I think you will fall in love with it's natural and warm frequency response.

The C02s have been my daily driver for several years, but I'm always eyeballing those KM-184s as an upgrade. That said, I'd love to see you do a review of the Warm Audio WA-84s and compare those to the 184s and these C02s.

Lovely aesthetics. I somehow really dig that simple background arrangement, even combined with the lower quality of the camera - I think they convey some welcome modesty about not trying to impress anyone with some super gear set (and since it sounds perfectly adequate, it's all good in the end). I honestly applaud these low-fi experiments.

I had the pleasure of meeting the Descendents, and Bill Stevenson. Bill is such a great guy. He gave me all kinds of pointers and replied to emails from me when I was in high school circa 2002. I found his email online and asked him a bunch of stupid questions. I later apologized for this in 2014 when I got to talk to him at the filmage movie premiere. About a year later Flag warmed up at the rehearsal studio my band also played at in Minneapolis. They signed my first 4 years record.

I've been using them for years as overheads. They're not great, but do just fine for demos.
I also used them for gang vocals in a pretty distant XY pattern with a hardcore band. Great to have for shennanigans like this because of the roll off in the lows.

The off-axis linearity of the CO2 was pretty good. On axis it sounded not terrible, a little nasally, which is a presence boost a bit lower than usual, around 2k, and a bit light in the bass.

  • @uncle-english

I have a Samson C02 as well as a Q2U. And I think, as Bandrew said, they're 100% functioning. I had recorded a podcast episode or two with with C02, and I think that was just alright. And I also used it in online conferences or classes during the pandemic. It did serve the purpose as long as I realize what it is good at and what it is not.
For users who just look at the specs, they may find the combination of low sensitivity and higher noise floor not very inviting. Or maybe just what Curtis said in his comment of Gerald Undone's video, "I wouldn't choose the CO2 unless you had a super tight budget". Yet I still want to say it depends on the purpose, the setting and the speaker. For some speakers like Curtis or Allen from Sound Speeds or Bronson from Audio Hotline, C02 may bring up the issue of excessive sibilance. However, speakers with deep, boomy voice like Gerald Undone or Mike from Booth Junkie may find C02 useful to reduce the lower frequency a bit even when they're speaking up close. The noise may increase the need for EQ or deesser or post-production. Yet no doubt C02 is a very useful and versatile mic in many use cases.
Anyway, I'm so glad to see Bandrew review this mic. This is just another perfect example of using budget-friendly tools to create fantastic content. Just like that famous quote from the newer Top Gun movie, "It's not the plane. It's the pilot."

There absolutely is good reason to have a super/hypercardioid mic on a desk boom arm - in my case I've been able to arrange things so that the sound from the keyboard, mouse, and desktop speakers all fall within the mic's null.

Ma per i microfoni con rumore eccessivo dovrebbero esserci dei campioni quando li critico. Grazie per l'input.

That's not absolutely true. SDC microphones are extensively used in situations when you need an absolutely semi-sphere cardioid polar pattern for all frequencies, for example for choir recordings. And in this case, you will find that those 5-7% of KM184's extensive goodness (5db higher sensitivity/9db lower noise/true polar pattern) absolutely must have to be there.
